SNMinistries Purchases New Facility BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

ince 2012, Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNMinistries) has served the community from its leased location at 355 Buck Road, Quarryville. The facility is largely occupied by shelving units and cold storage for the faith-based food bank; it includes several offices as well. In recent years, however, the organization has wanted a larger facility, executive director Teresa Dolan noted. “Where we are now, we have a great food bank space but no room for programs,” Dolan explained. “Our goal is to have more services and opportunities to have multiple needs met, to offer programs that might be offered (in Lancaster city), such as budgeting and (job-seeking support).” Dolan and SNMinistries board members had intermittently looked for a new facility over the past two years, but recently, the opportunity to purchase the former Masonic Lodge, 14 S. Church St., Quarryville, was presented to them. “The Masons had wanted (the

S

building) to go to a ministry, and they reached out to us,” Dolan said. “God orchestrated the whole thing perfectly.” The three-story building is at least 100 years old and will need some renovations, including upgrades necessary for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act,

However, it offers many benefits, including an additional 3,000 square feet of space, parking, privacy for clients, and access to Huffnagle Park, where children can enjoy supervised play while their parents or guardians attend meetings and classes. “We are in the process of meeting

with contractors to see what needs to be done,” Dolan commented. “We will be meeting with someone to figure out if a capital campaign will be needed.” Dolan noted that until now, SNMinistries has not engaged in formal fundraising. Churches, other ministries, Scout and services groups, and individuals have collected food for distribution to households in need, and financial resources have come from those donors as well. Anyone who would like to be kept apprised of ministry needs is invited to visit www.solanco neighborhoodministries.org to sign up for the newsletter, which is distributed about once a month. Fundraising plans will be announced in the newsletter, Dolan said. When it is time to move, volunteer labor assistance will be requested. The goal is to complete the transition to Church Street sometime this year. Dolan noted that current staff members and volunteers are excited about the opportunity to start from scratch as far as organizing goes. See SNMinistries pg 3

The Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce (SLCCC) invites high school seniors at Solanco, Lampeter-Strasburg, and Penn Manor, as well as homeschool seniors who live in those districts, to apply for $500 business-related scholarships. In addition, the Chamber will also award two $250 military scholarships. The business-related scholarships are awarded annually to one student in each district who plans to pursue a business-related major in college or technical school or who plans to operate their own See Scholarships pg 5

write “The Crownless King,” the first book in her Christian children’s series “The Pilgrimage of Jacki and Gerri.” Its origins, however, date back more than 80 years. Mowery, who grew up in Parkesburg and and attended Octorara schools, was 14 years old when she learned that she had twin aunts who died in childhood. Her grandmother, Sarah June, never spoke about the girls, so when she died when Mowery was 19, any information she could have shared died with her.

Chicken, Chicken, Sub Sandwich Strasburg Fire Company Plans Mud Sale Alternative BY ANN MEAD ASH

“The fire company is not having their annual mud sale,” said Strasburg Fire Company member Isaac Fisher, who noted that the nearly 50-year tradition was canceled because the event is not advisable during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Isaac is enthusiastic, however, about the alternative fundraiser the organization has planned, which will involve sales of chicken barbecue, soup, and sandwiches on the same day the mud sale would have been held. “We have done this before, and we usually sell out,” Isaac noted.

Art Auction Goes Virtual Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio and Friendship Community will host their 18th annual art auction. The seven-day virtual event will run from 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 18, to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 25. In addition, a Paintbrush Pull will be held at the closing of the auction. For a set donation, individuals will receive a number that corresponds to one of many paintbrushes. The number on the paint-

brush that is pulled at the end of the auction will determine the winner of a gift basket filled with a variety of items from the Primitives by Kathy Collaborative Collection of home décor items, handmade jewelry and greeting cards by the Heart artists and a Friendship Heart Gallery gift certificate. Individuals will receive a bonus number when purchasing five paintbrush numbers.

The online event is free and open to the public. Proceeds will benefit artists with intellectual disabilities and autism, enabling them to express their capabilities. To register, readers may visit www.friendshipart.net. Readers are encouraged to register early to view available pieces. Additional videos will be posted on Friendship Heart Gallery and Friendship Community’s Facebook pages.

The books are illustrated by local artist Anna Kelsey and are available in paperback and hardcover wherever books are sold. Mowery also donated a copy to Quarryville Library, from which it may be borrowed by patrons. “I never thought in a million years that I’d write kids’ books,” Mowery commented. “My grandmother always wanted to be a writer, but she used to say the 1930s and ’40s weren’t the time for women authors. All these years later, her dreams are coming true (through me).” Mowery wants her books to encourage readers and to give them hope. “This Earth isn’t our home,” she explained. “People need to look beyond what’s here on this Earth because it’s going to be gone one day.” For more information about Mowery and “The Crownless King,” readers may visit www.authorkimberlymowery.com.

After she married and had three sons, Mowery experienced her own child loss. In 2005, her daughter, whom she named Sarah June, developed a cancerous brain tumor at 16 months and died two-and-ahalf years later. Mowery realized that she could relate to the first Sarah June. In 2014, Mowery set out to learn more about the twins. She found their burial site in Ohio and through cemetery records discovered that the girls had been born prematurely on Jan. 23, 1940. Jacqueline Ann was stillborn, and Geraldine Doris lived 48 hours. Mowery was struck by the dates. Her daughter, Sarah June, had died on Jan. 24. “There is no such thing as coincidence, only divine intervention,” said Mowery. For years, Mowery had wanted to write a book about her grandmother’s life as a way to bring her back to Earth and allow her to grieve the loss of her twins. Instead, she felt a nudge from the Holy Spirit to focus on the children. The Pilgrimage series features their imagined

The sophomore, who swims for the Jennersville YMCA team, represented the black and gold Friday, February 5 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championships held at Wilson High School. She was the top seed in both the 200 and 100 freestyle events and lived up to the billing, grabbing gold in both events with a 1:55.13 and a 54.33, respectively. “This was my first big meet,” said Scott who set PR’s in both events. “Because of covid we’ve had a couple of virtual meets but nothing like this.” GIRLS’ BASKETBALL While the boys’ basketball team was in quarantine, the girls were faced with a marathon schedule playing five games in seven days and picking up three wins along the way. Wednesday, Feb. 10, behind a career-high 29 points from Paige Phillips, Solanco ran past visiting York High 63-38. It was a seasonhigh point total for Solanco who held the visitors to 12 first half points while pouring in 30. York took the third quarter 14-13 before Solanco blew the game open with a 20 effort over the final eight minutes. Phillips drained seven triples on the night to lead all scorers. Jade Eshleman (12 points) and Sammi Jackson (11 points) also finished with double digits. On Monday, Feb. 8, playing their fourth game in five days, Solanco managed just single digit scoring in all four quarters and was dealt a 3315 loss at Hershey. “I thought we had our legs, but we lost some focus mentally and, with the long bus ride, we never really found our rhythm,” said head coach Chad McDowell. “We just

could not buy a basket. But we did hold them to 33 points, the second lowest we have allowed this year. When you hold a good team to 33 points you have a shot at winning. It was just not our night.” Hannah Wood was the top scorer with four points. Prior to Hershey, the girls played three straight games. They knocked off Manheim Central 35-33 in overtime Thursday, Feb. 4, suffered a 4431 defeat at Cocalico on Friday and picked up a 57-46 thriller over Lancaster Mennonite Saturday. After suffering a five-point loss to the Barons on Jan. 25, Solanco was determined to split the series. Down 7-4 in the first quarter and 16-11 at the break, the hosts rallied down the stretch to earn their second section win of the season. Back-to-back threes by Phillips late in the third gave Solanco their second lead of the night, 23-20. But that was short-lived as Central forged ahead. Sammi Jackson and Nikki Trout scored key buckets in the final minute to send the game into overtime. Free throws were the difference in the extra period. Solanco hit fourof-six to pull out the win. But it was the Barons with the last look. Their transition bucket in the paint was off the mark, leaving Solanco in front. “Jade had a solid game with some big rebounds and Paige hit those two big three in the third,” McDowell said. “We still had too many turnovers but at the end of the game we executed when we needed to.” Trout and Eshleman (11 rebounds) both scored nine points with Phillips adding eight in a balanced attack. In Denver Friday night, Solanco held the section leading Eagles to 12 first half points but gave up 32 after halftime and suffered the 13point loss.

The Eagles dropped in six threes and were 14-of-18 from the foul line. Solanco managed one threepointer and two free throws. “They got hot from the threepoint line and their experience wore us down,” said McDowell. Jackson and Trout tied for a team-high eight points. Arianna Seiberlich added seven and dished out five assists. Section Four leader Lancaster Mennonite (8-0, 9-4 overall) traveled to Quarryville on Saturday and was dealt a 57-46 loss. business following high school graduation. A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 is required. Scholarships can be used to help offset educational expenses, fees incurred in starting a business, or participation in an apprenticeship program. The $250 military scholarships are new this year. The SLCCC will award two scholarships to students who will enlist in a branch of the U.S. military. A GPA of 2.0 or higher is required. Students intending to participate in a Reserve Officer Training Corps program in college are not eligible for the scholarship. Applications should include a brief essay or video explaining why respective applicants are enlisting in their particular branch of service as well as a letter of recommendation from a community leader. Scholarship recipients will receive funds deposited directly into their personal accounts after successful completion of boot camp. Military scholarships can be used to offset the cost of supplies, uniform alterations, and transportation. The application deadline for both scholarships will be determined by each district’s guidance office. Guidance staff members and the SLCCC Scholarship Committee will review applications for accuracy and completeness. Applications will be reviewed anonymously; the Chamber’s scholarship committee will not know the identity of the applicants until after the recipients are chosen. The school districts and the SLCCC will announce the scholarship recipients in May or early June. Applications for the businessrelated scholarships and the military scholarships are available at www.southernlancasterchamber.org. Students may also contact their high school guidance office for applications. The SLCCC obtains funding for the scholarships through its annual document shredding event, which is typically held in early June in Willow Street. Last year’s event was canceled due to the pandemic, but plans are being made to resume the event this year. Once again, local businesses, organizations, and residents will be invited to bring their sensitive and confidential paperbased materials for shredding and subsequent recycling. Donations for the service will be used to fund the annual college scholarships. For more information about the scholarships and the shredding event, readers may call SLCCC secretary Keith Kaufman at 717-786-5617.

Chicken meals will include a halfchicken, a baked potato, a roll, coleslaw, a whoopie pie, and a beverage for one price. “We will sell gallons and quarts, and we provide the container (for the chicken corn soup),” said Isaac. Organizers have devised a driveup system where each car will be met by a volunteer who will take the order, and then the car will move forward for the occupants to receive their order. In December 2020, the fire company purchased a new piece of equipment called a Tac, a truck-sized apparatus that seats four volunteers, boasts four-wheel-drive, can hold 300 gallons of water, and is fitted with a pump. “We got it for smaller calls,” said Amos Fisher, who is co-chairing the fundraiser with Ivan Fisher. “(The idea is) to save wear and tear on the bigger units.” Amos said the $300,000 vehicle will be used for trash fires, brush fires, and car fires, among other calls when a full-size fire truck is not

necessary. “It’s a smaller version of your basic fire engine,” said Amos, who noted that some fire company members have wanted a Tac for quite some time, but that the fire company began diligently working toward purchasing one about a year ago. “We figured out this is what we need,” said Amos. “We were trying to raise money for a new piece for a couple of years, and this made the most sense for the company.” Isaac stated that he hopes the sale will raise $12,000 to $15,000 that the fire company can use to make up for lost revenue. “We normally make $75,000 from the mud sale, and we have to try to figure out ways to make money in different avenues,” said Isaac, adding, “We welcome donations. We appreciate support from our local community, and we are always looking for more volunteers.” Individuals who have questions about the barbecue, soup, and sandwich sale may call 717-687-6223 or 717-847-6334. For more information about the fire company, readers may visit www.strasburgfire.com.

During National Family Meals Month last September, the Giant Company launched its For Today’s Table brand platform, which included refreshed uniforms and store décor, merchandising innovations and more. Customers were encouraged to share photos of their family connecting over a meal on social media using #ForTodaysTable during the month. For every photo shared, the Giant Company donated the cash equivalent to provide 100 meals to neighbors in need. In addition, ads were developed featuring real families with footage of their daily lives, including mealtime, for television and radio spots. The Giant Company distributed red tables, benches and picnic blankets throughout the community and to area food banks. On Sept. 26, 2020, National Family Day, the first 100 customers in stores also received a picnic blanket. The Giant Company rewarded its own team members, as well, providing $100 in Grocery Dollars to each of its 35,000 team members.
