“With 21st-century learning, our definition of what is success needs to include more people. We can no longer be striving towards a model where the goal of education is to replicate and duplicate ‘sameness’ in individuals,” Moore said in an interview about her research at the University of British Columbia (UBC) posted at www.grad.ubc.ca/ campus-community/meet-our -students/moore-shelley. Moore holds a bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Alberta and a master’s degree from Simon Fraser University. She holds a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council doctoral fellowship at UBC, where she is exploring inclusive education for students with significant intellectual and developmental disabilities in secondary schools. “We need to better understand whether and how meaningful learning of curricula becomes more accessible to all students

when students with intellectual and developmental disabilities are included,” Moore explained. “To that end, my research will contribute by investigating how content area and special education teachers can collaborate to create rich learning opportunities for and with students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their peers in inclusive classrooms.” In addition to her keynote address, Moore will lead a breakout session on supporting learners from a strengths-based perspective. Other breakout session topics will include brain development, autism and executive function difficulties, depression and anxiety, trauma awareness and strategies for supporting students with histories of trauma, classroom safety, special education and student services law, bullying, yoga and mindfulness for preschoolers, developing career readiness through esports, and more. Conference attendance is open
to anyone with an interest in education, particularly teachers, school district and agency personnel, parents, and college students. IU13 early childhood and special education services program support liaison Linda Swisher noted that because the number of substitute teachers attending the conference has dramatically increased, a session on substitutespecific classroom management has been added to the program. A tiered pricing system has been set for admission to the conference. Parents, substitutes, and university students will receive a special rate. An early bird discount is available for school district and agency personnel who register prior to Friday, May 1. Breakfast and lunch are included in the cost. Six Act 48 hours will be awarded for attending the keynote speech and two breakout sessions. For more information or to register, readers may visit www.iu13.org or call Swisher at 717-606-1878.

Campers will receive scripts and other rehearsal materials two weeks before the camp begins. While everyone will be in the production, auditions for specific speaking and singing roles will be held on the first day of camp. The group will produce Word Music’s “Under God’s Sea in 3D, which includes songs like “Diving Deep and “Open the Eyes of My Heart and opportunities to learn about marine life and God’s character. Producing “Under God’s Sea in 3D will also serve as a vehicle to share the Gospel with youngsters and help them develop their creative arts skills. The musical camp is the first offering of Outpour Kids, a division of GCCWS music ministry Outpour Worship. “We want to bring more kids in the community to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, and one way to do that is through music, Wieand commented. “We also want to teach kids excellence, to correctly use their (voice) so they can transfer into other things with confidence. Outpour Kids will also offer a community worship choir for children in first through sixth grades that will meet in eightweek sessions in the fall and in spring 2021. A second musical theater camp for first- through eighth-graders is planned for June 2021. Wieand said she hopes that area churches will refer students to the GCCWS programs to support what is happening in their own congregations. “The goal is to grow the Kingdom (of God), not our church. We want to be a resource for other churches, Wieand explained. Wieand expressed a desire to develop a curriculum that can be shared with ministry partners around the world. Currently, the plan is to guide participants in singing in unison and simple

parts; learning singing basics such as proper breathing, posture, diction, healthy vocal production, music reading skills, and musicianship; practicing choral disciplines such as following instructions and choir etiquette; and understanding worship to God and ways to serve Him. Wieand is a Lancaster County native and has an extensive vocal performance background. She directed her first children’s choir while earning her bachelor’s degree at Belmont University, and she acted in musical theater productions while studying for her master’s degree in opera performance from Boston Conservatory of Music. Wieand has performed in operatic productions throughout the United States, including the Fulton Theatre. She was invited to a three-month opera residency in Spain, but she instead chose to marry her husband, Matt, and open a vocal studio in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District. The couple has three children and has hosted an exchange student for four years. “I love how music can help a child memorize anything, Wieand said. “If we can help children write God’s Word on their hearts, the possibilities are endless. Only GCCWS members will serve as staff members for the first musical camp, and each adult will mentor a group of eight campers. Community members with an interest in vocal performance and a faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior may apply to volunteer with the eight-week sessions. To apply as a volunteer or to register children for the camp, readers may visit https://gccws.net/outpour-kids. Individuals with questions about financial aid or anything else not covered on the website may call the church at 717-464-5333.

Pequea countered with a three-ball by Abby Leslie (10 points) and neither team led by more than two until 2:30 left to play. But another foul and two free throws by Leslie sent the Braves into the finals opposite Lancaster Catholic. “There were several times throughout the game that we did not execute,” said McDowell. “Those mishaps were costly at times. When Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) musical director Dean Sauder chose the musical “Beauty and the Beast” for the school’s spring offering, he was not thinking about how aspects of the play would echo the school’s theme for the year of “Transformation,” but he was amazed to recognize how the two went hand-in-hand. “When we come to Christ, we are transformed,” noted Dean. “Belle sees the possibilities in (the Beast), and she doesn’t write him off,” said Dean, adding that with the Beast’s rival, Gaston, the outside masks a less-attractive interior. “Are there possible Christian undertones?” he wondered. “It’s not a Christian story, but I don’t think it’s a far leap.” “Beauty and the Beast” will be produced at LMHS in the Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27; Friday, Feb. 28; and Saturday, Feb. 29. A matinee performance will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 1. In addition, a breakfast meetand-greet with the principal cast members will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, in the school dining hall, beginning at 8:30 a.m. “(Attendees) can dance with Belle and the Beast,” said Dean, who added that activities with other characters will be available to those who attend the ticketed event. Individuals who attend in costume will be able to purchase a

discounted ticket to see the play. “Beauty and the Beast” is the tale of Belle, played by Becca Sauder, and the Beast, played by Noah Schnabel, who is really a prince trapped under a spell. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the spell will be broken, and he will become human again. Other principal characters include Isaac Kraenbring as Belle’s father, Maurice; Chadman Martin as Gaston; Isaac Harnish as Cogsworth, with Brendan Johnson as his sidekick, Lumiere; and Ella Murray as Mrs. Potts. About a year ago, Dean saw a production of the show that put some unique twists on the story. The changes motivated him to take on the show, which he said can be an overwhelming task. “It’s a huge show in every aspect,” said Dean of helming the cast of 53. In addition to the challenges of vocals, sets, and costumes, the stage show includes several musical numbers not found in the movie. “They have added a number of beautiful ballads that enhance the story,” said Dean, who noted that many of the songs are sung by the Beast and that Belle and Maurice sing a duet. “There’s a big production number called ‘Human Again,’ where all the objects dream of what it would be like to be human again,” said Dean. To enhance sound, the pit orchestra will be located on stage behind the action. “Beauty and the Beast” brings

that the beast is dark and brooding, but when he sings, it’s a high range,” he noted. The students are also considering the effect the show will have on audiences. “A lot of the principals have come up with unique ways to add to their character,” said Murray. “I hope the people who see it appreciate the new takes we brought to our (roles).” Tickets for the play may be purchased at www.lancaster mennonite.org under the Fine Arts tab, by calling 717-7402456, or by emailing box office@lancastermennonite.org. many inanimate objects to life, and the LMHS production will take that a step further by giving additional inanimate life forms a chance to move. “In the forest, there will be actors that portray trees, and the enchanted rose will also be portrayed by a live actress,” said Dean. Cast members reported that they are enjoying the challenges of the show, with Becca commenting that the music is vocally interesting. Harnish is having fun developing the character of the uptight Cogsworth, as is Martin with the over-the-top villain Gaston. Murray is relishing perfecting her British accent. As the Beast, Schnabel is working to portray a frightening creature that sings. “We have the idea

Police Receive 39 Car Seats The Center for Traffic Safety, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, Safe Kids Lancaster County, and the Manheim Township Police Department will distribute car seats to Lancaster County police departments. Funded by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, 39 car seats were slated to be provided to 21 municipal police departments by the end of January. Law enforcement agencies often have child passengers during calls, and they need to have resources available to safely transport children. Every child must be properly restrained when riding in a motor vehicle. In order to uphold this Pennsylvania law, police officers need to have the means to transport children safely before leaving a scene. According to Safe Kids, a correctly installed child restraint can greatly reduce the risk of injury or death in an automobile accident. Safe Kids Lancaster County offers car seat checks at locations through Lancaster County. To learn more, readers may contact Natalie Oster, Lancaster County coalition coordinator, at 717-544-3807 or natalie.oster @pennmedicine.upenn.edu.
