Parade Honors Bob Adams For His 100th Birthday BY FRANCINE FULTON
Bob Adams, who turned 100 years old on Feb. 15, was honored with a surprise drive-by birthday parade on Feb. 14 at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, where he resides. The parade was led by a fire truck from Union Fire Company No. 1, Oxford.
“He was outside and watched the parade go by,” reported Adams’ daughter Gail Miller. “All of our family and friends and church family came in their cars. It took an hour to go by. There were 30 cars and 70 people. Dad said it was biggest surprise of his life.” Adams was a professional photographer in Oxford, where he owned his own photography studio named Adams and See Bob Adams pg 6
Leon Ressler (fifth from left) accompanied by his wife, Lou Ann (fourth from left), returned to Wakefield EMS to thank workers who helped save his life after he went into cardiac arrest. Also participating in the ceremony were (from far left) Alexandra Morales, EMT, Lancaster EMS; Kirstie Breneman, paramedic/supervisor, Wakefield EMS; Tyler McCardell, advanced EMT/chief, Wakefield EMS; Dan Appel and Jason Stone, Robert Fulton Fire Company; Tanner Ettinger, advanced EMT, Wakefield EMS; Brandon Martin, paramedic, Lancaster EMS; and (not pictured) Daniel Esh, Robert Fulton Fire Company.
Patient Returns To Thank EMS Workers For Their Lifesaving Efforts eon Ressler of Peach Bottom went into cardiac arrest on Jan. 3 while watching online Sunday church services with his wife, Lou Ann. Thankfully, he not only survived the medical crisis, but he recently returned to Wakefield EMS to thank the emergency medical service (EMS) workers who helped to save him. Tyler McCardell, EMS chief at Wakefield, explained that when Leon suddenly became unresponsive, Lou Ann, a nurse at a local retirement community, sprang into action, beginning CPR and immediately dialing 911. Less than six minutes later, the on-duty

ambulance crew from Wakefield EMS arrived on scene and continued resuscitation efforts for over an hour before transferring Leon for care at a hospital.
“We encourage everyone to use this story as inspiration to learn CPR because it can absolutely save a life and make a huge difference,” McCardell said. Wakefield crews were assisted by firefighters from Robert Fulton Fire Company and a paramedic from the Lancaster EMS Quarryville station.
Octoraro Watershed Association Sets Photography Contest
Together, their combined efforts led to a successful outcome. Leon returned home after a weeklong hospital stay. McCardell reported the incident to the Emergency Health Services Federation, the regional governing body for EMS agencies in southcentral Pennsylvania. The federation later issued the Clinical Save Award to EMS providers involved in the call for “exemplary clinical care in the prehospital setting.” “They verified the outcome, and the federation sent the award to us to give to the individual providers,” McCardell said. “We have only received this award for our providers twice in the last three years.”
Local amateur photographers are invited to participate in the annual Octoraro Watershed Association (OWA) Photography Contest by submitting photos taken in the watershed area, which includes 208 square miles in southern Chester and Lancaster counties, as well as Cecil County, Md.

Fire Company Plans Mud Sale Alternative
SOLANCO EDITION
BY ANN MEAD ASH
“The fire company is not having their annual mud sale,” said Strasburg Fire Company member Isaac Fisher, who noted that the nearly 50-year tradition was canceled because the event is not advisable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Isaac is enthusiastic, however, about the alternative fundraiser the organization has planned, which will involve sales of chicken barbecue, soup, and sandwiches on the same day the mud sale would have been held. “We have done this before, and we usually sell out,” Isaac noted. On Friday, Feb. 26, the fire company will sell chicken corn soup only by takeout at the station, 203 Franklin St., Strasburg, from noon to 5 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 27, a barbecue, soup, and sandwich sale will feature chicken barbecue meals; chicken corn soup; American sub sandwiches with ham, lettuce, tomato, and onion; and ham and cheese sandwiches on round rolls. All items will be available for takeout on Feb. 27, beginning at 10 a.m. Cash sales will be made on a firstcome first-served basis until

Chicken meals will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, a roll, coleslaw, a whoopie pie, and a beverage for one price. “ We will sell gallons and quarts, and we provide the container (for the chicken corn soup),” said Isaac. Organizers have devised a drive-up system where each car will be met by a volunteer who will take the order, and then the car will move forward for the occupants to receive their order. In December 2020, the fire company purchased a new piece of equipment called a Tac, a truck-sized apparatus that seats four volunteers, boasts four-wheel-drive, can hold 300 gallons of water, and is fitted with a pump. “We got it for smaller calls,” said Amos Fisher, who is cochairing the fundraiser with Ivan Fisher. “(The idea is) to save wear and tear on the bigger units.” Amos said the $300,000 vehicle will be used for trash fires, brush fires, and car fires, among other calls when a full-size fire truck is not necessary. “It’s a smaller version of your basic fire engine,” said Amos, who noted that some fire company members have wanted a

At the ceremony, Leon offered his gratitude, stating, “I am blessed that God gave me extra days on Earth. But God works through people, and He was certainly working through you all that day. Thank you so much to everyone involved.” “He was unresponsive and pulseless on his living room floor (during the incident) and (came to the Wakefield EMS for the award presentation) walking, talking and chatting as we showed him the code strip of all the shocks we gave his heart,” McCardell shared. “It was an amazing experience to stand next to him and talk to him. We don’t always get to see the positive outcome.” McCardell said that Lou Ann was an integral part of the team effort. “For every minute that someone goes without CPR, their chances of survival drop dramatically. She filled a fiveminute gap by performing highquality chest compressions, setting the stage for (our arrival),” he stated. He also highlighted that February is American Heart Month. “We encourage everyone to use this story as inspiration to learn CPR because it can absolutely save a life

Because of the pandemic, this year’s event will give photographers an opportunity to email their entries for the first time. In past years, only mailed-in prints were accepted for the contest. “We had to cancel (the contest) last year, but because we have seen how well virtual entries can work, we decided to give it a try,” said Shotty Sprenkle, contest organizer. Sprenkle said she believes that this year’s contest will attract even more photographers because the pandemic has caused many people to rely on virtual platforms. “A year has gone by and people have learned to adapt and educate themselves (on computer technology),” she said. “I anticipate more entries as a result of that.” It is not necessary to live in the Octoraro Watershed to participate in the contest, which is open to photographers of any age. Entries will be judged in three age categories: Adult, age 18 and above; Youth, ages 13 to 17; and Youth 2, age 12 and under. Sheaffer Nets Game-Winner Against Spartans
The boys’ basketball team opened its three games in four days run with a 51-49 thriller over Garden Spot at home Saturday, February 13. It was their first win of the season. “It was a great first win and had a ton of plays that were huge down the stretch,” said head coach Dave Long. “Colesen Sheaf-
fer hit a big shot with 1:17 left to give us the lead and 20 seconds later, Ayden Maggs took a great charge to get us the ball back. Ultimately, Spot got the ball back and tried to post up Ayden for the win, but he played the best post defense I have seen and challenged the shot without fouling.” The Mules led by as many as 11 points, 27-16, late in the second quarter on a jumper by Zed Baker.

AUCTION
Spot closed the lead to seven at the half then canned a pair of threes early in the third to regain the lead, 34-32. It was nip-andtuck from there with neither team leading by more than three points. “We had great contributions from all of our seniors (Ethan Clary, Sheaffer, Martin Grawe, Baker, Ryan Smith and Jared Poole) as well as junior Trent McDowell who came in and helped rebound and defend,” added Long. Game-high honors went to Baker with 12 points. Tyler Burger added 11 and Smith finished with 10. Monday the Mules traveled to Manheim Central where a 28-2 run by the Barons was the difference in a lopsided 70-34 final. Burger was the only doubledigit scorer, netting 15. One night later, back at home, they were looking for an upset win over the second-place team in Section Three, Cocalico. The Eagles, who defeated the Mules 54-32 in their first meeting, had a tougher go this time around. Solanco erased a 13-8 first quarter deficit with an 11-6 second quarter and tied the game at 1919 by halftime. The visitors, however, used a 17-9 third period to propel them to a 45-36 win. Cocalico nailed a key 11-of-18 free throws to help their cause. Clary sparked Solanco’s offense with nine points. Burger and Maggs combined for 11. WRESTLING The Lancaster-Lebanon League Wrestling Championships were held Saturday, February 13 at Manheim Township High School and, due to Covid-19 concerns, included just eight wrestlers per weight class. At the end of the day, Solanco finished solidly in third place with 72 points. Township (125.5) was the overall winner and Hempfield (115) slipped in for second place. “We finished where we were expected to finish,” said head coach Tony Mendez. “We won the matches we were supposed to win. We had to wrestle well to
finish at our seed, but we didn’t knock anyone off. You’re always hoping for a bit extra,” he added, “but I was not disappointed.” Solanco had seven wrestlers qualify and two advanced to the finals. Two-time champ Dom Flatt at 106 and Jared Fulton, a finalist last year, at 126. Both finished in second place. “Dom was a No. 2 seed and lost again to Township’s freshman standout Kaedyn Williams 5-1,” said Mendez. Flatt (14-2) opened the tournament with a 13 second fall over Central’s Gabe Thomas and then pinned N. Lebanon’s Owen Lehman in 1:27 to get to the finals. J. Fulton (13-3) also opened with a fall, decking Cedar Crest’s Taylor Gehman in 2:52 and then working a 7-3 decision over Garden Spot’s Mason Casey. He faced Township junior Alicea in the finals and lost 4-0. Wrestling at 138, Ronnie Fulton came away with a third-place medal. Like Flatt and J. Fulton, R. Fulton pinned in his opening bout, topping Hempfield’s Kamron Fickes with just 25 seconds left. He faced CV’s Keaton Fischer in the semis and fell short, 7-5 but in the consis worked a second fall, this time over Tanner McCracken, of Ephrata. R. Fulton secured his third fall of the tourney with a 3:32 result against Elco’s Trenton Brubaker to earn bronze. Weston Bare settled for fourth place. He too got off to a quick start, pinning N. Lebanon’s Julian Zaragoza in 1:05. In the semis, however, Township’s Josh Hillard earned a 5:04 fall. Bare came back with a 2:59 fall over Octorara’s Tyler Walton before dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to Hempfield’s Seamus Mack. “Weston was up 2-0 with 40 seconds to go and gave up an escape and a takedown,” Mendez recalled. “He lost to Mack earlier this year but this time he was in control for five of the six minutes of the match.” Also finishing in fourth place was Jackson Houghton. Gorgo earned the opportunity to compete in the championship round by finishing as one of the top 33 spellers from among the more than 130 students who recently took an online test. She qualified for the online test when she won the Swift Middle School Spelling Bee in December. The Grand Championship Oral Spelling Bee will be held
virtually via Zoom. The spelling bee sponsor is WITFTV, virtual channel 33, a Public Broadcasting Service member television station.

Adams Photography. His business partner was Burrel Adams (no relation), whom he met in World War II. They partnered together until Burrel and his wife moved to a warmer climate. Adams mostly specialized in wedding photography; he photographed more than 3,000 weddings in his lifetime. He also took many pictures for local businesses and social events. Miller reported that her father had the privilege of photographing notable figures, including Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and her daughter Elizabeth II, the current queen of England; four-star Gen. James H. Doolittle; Vice President Gerald Ford; Martin Luther King Jr.; Albert Einstein; musician Duke Ellington; and singer Marian Anderson. “ When he was in World War II, he was stationed in England and was a photographer for the war effort. He actually had to take pictures from airplanes. He was in the Army Air Forces,” Miller explained. “His responsibility was to take photos of the bombings that we were going on against other countries. He had to lay in the belly of

They needed to see if they hit their target; they did not have drones back then.” “ When he worked in Oxford as the main photographer in town, he did a lot of photos for Lincoln University. That’s when he (photographed) Martin Luther King and Marian Anderson,” she added. Adams was also a school bus manager for the Oxford Area School District and was a driver himself for approximately 42 years. He was married to Mary Stilwell Adams for 68 years until her passing. “After dad finished his tour in World War II, he sent his parachute home to his fiancée, my mom, to have her
wedding dress made from the new secret material - nylon, which was made for the war effort,” Miller shared. “Since nylon was a new fabric, the seamstress was afraid to work with it, but she did, and the dress turned out beautifully, covered buttons and all.” On the occasion of his birthday, Miller had the opportunity to ask her father his secret to living a long life. “He felt his secret was love. He married the love of his life, and my mom, Mary, felt the same way about him,” she said. “If they ever had any type of spat, they settled it between themselves quickly. And he felt that in helping others, it showed the love of Jesus to them, which basically boomeranged back to him in love.”
