COBYS Family Services in June 2019. That figure does not include other types of kinship custody arrangements, such as aunts and uncles caring for their nieces or nephews or older siblings with guardianship of their younger brothers and sisters. All of those types of caregivers, however, are welcome to participate in the kinship support services offered by COBYS. Seminars are held on the fourth Sunday of the month at Lancaster Brethren in Christ Church, 1865 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster, and kinship coffee sessions are held around Lancaster County. See Kinship Program pg 2
Barb Paynter (left) of COBYS Family Services and Raeanne Nixon of Solid Rock Youth Ministries invite those who are caregivers of a relative’s children to attend the next kinship session, which will be held at Solid Rock on March 9.
The dress rehearsal of Solanco High School’s production of “Footloose” will be open to senior citizens on Wednesday, March 4, at 4 p.m. in the school’s auditorium, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. Refreshments will be served in the cafeteria during intermission. Admission will be free of charge, but reservations are required by calling district communication coordinator Keith Kaufman at 717-786-5617. General audiences are invited to attend the public performances on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, March 5, 6, and 7, at 7 p.m. Tickets for adults and for students may be purchased at the door. Tickets may be reserved ahead of time by calling 866-967-8167 or visiting www.showtix4u.com. “Footloose” was adapted for the stage by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie and is based on Pitchford’s original
screenplay, which was turned into a hit movie in 1984. Pitchford also wrote the lyrics, and Tom Snow wrote the music. Additional music was provided by Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins, and others. Solanco’s production is directed by Erin Biles, with John Biles serving as assistant director and producer. Scott Weyman is the pit director. Erin noted that the cast of 42 students is on the larger size for a Solanco production. Some of those actors are part of the dance ensemble, which she is excited about. Choreographer Debbie Shrom has been assisted by her daughter, Tiffany Shrom, who is a dance major at Slippery Rock University. “Dancing is really big in this show,” Erin said, adding that she chose “Footloose” for this year’s production because she knew she had dancers available. Curtailment of the freedom to dance and listen to rock music is the obvious conflict in the plot of “Footloose,” but See “Footloose” Musical pg 10

Solid Rock Youth Ministries, 34 E. State St., Quarryville, has been hosting coffee sessions on the second Monday of the month since the start of the school year. Beginning with the Monday, March 9, event, the sessions will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Solid Rock executive director Raeanne Nixon noted that the coffee sessions had previously been held in the morning, but as attendance was low, the time was changed to accommodate people who work during the day. There is no charge to attend the coffee sessions, and child care and refreshments are provided at no cost. Kinship support services coordinator Barb Paynter said the sessions provide opportunities for people caring for their relatives’ children to connect with each other
for support and encouragement. Training is provided, and at the end of the session, COBYS gives each attendee a certificate, as some agencies require caregivers to accrue a certain number of training hours as part of custody arrangements. There are five parts to a session, Paynter said. To start the evening, the facilitator checks in with each participant, who has time to share successes and struggles, any coping strategies they have found useful, and feedback on community resources. Then, the facilitator or a guest speaker talks about a relevant topic, such as loss and ambivalence, family communication, or anger management. Next, a community resource is highlighted, and then there is a time to self-reflect, during which attendees
are encouraged to set a goal for the next month. The session wraps up with networking among attendees and interaction with the presenters. “The networking is important,” said Doug May, COBYS communications and development manager. “(Through networking) people realize they’re not alone in their situation.” “It’s really a huge support for them,” Paynter added. “(Support) comes from each other, (not just from facilitators).” COBYS offers an extensive assortment of family life education programs, which includes kinship support services. The goal is to give children and adults tools to strengthen family bonds and tackle challenges. “For the children, there’s often a difficult situation that caused them to move into (a kinship parenting relationship),” Paynter said, listing a parent’s death or
incarceration as two such catalysts. COBYS wants to help adults love and support the affected youths while they also take care of themselves. “Support is there for them,” May remarked. “There’s much to be gained from other people who have walked this path. If someone is in a kinship parenting relationship, they most likely didn’t plan this. There’s a lot to deal with, and we want to help them with that.” In addition to March 9, kinship coffee sessions are scheduled at Solid Rock on Mondays, April 13 and May 11. Paynter said she would like to continue offering the program through the summer, but it will depend on the budget at COBYS. Registration is required to attend the coffee sessions, and readers may call COBYS at 717-435-8139 to indicate their plans to attend.

Mules Qualify Seven Matmen to Districts by Mona Steinhauer
Solanco’s matmen opened their post-season run with a fifth place finish at the District Three Class 3A Section Two tournament held Feb. 14-15 at Hempfield High School. Their efforts included qualifying seven wrestlers to the District Three/Southcentral Region championships at Spring Grove High School. “We always have high expectations,” said head coach Tony Mendez. “We were hoping to have eight qualify and we got seven through. So overall it was a good weekend.” Jared Fulton, wrestling at 120, was Solanco’s highest finisher. He was the Mules’ only representative Photo by Vaughn Brown in the championship finals Saturday Solanco’s Joey Vandegriff makes short work of Manheim Townnight. He was pinned in 1:04 by four ship’s Emanuel Diaz, tilting him into a 49-second fall during a 132-pound, preliminary-round bout in the District Three AAA time champ Will Betancourt of Manheim Central. Section Two tournament at Hempfield on February 14. Fulton, seeded third, opened with a bye and advanced with a 10-2 major decision over Liam Kennedy (Central Dauphin) in the quarterfinals. His semifinals match opposite No. 2 seed Ethan Ketner, of Hershey, was a tight 4-3 win. Tied at 2-2 in the first period, Fulton’s reversal in the second off-set Ketner’s escape and provided the final scoring of the match. Five other Mules finished in third place. No. 2 seed Dominic Flatt picked up a 12-4 major decision over Central’s Braxton Keiffer in the quarterfinals before dropping a 7-4 decision to Township’s Josh Hillard. Flatt
held a 3-0 lead heading into the final period but gave up a pair of takedowns and an escape as the eventual 106-pound second place finisher advanced. “Dom beat Hillard twice before but this time he really slowed Dom’s offense,” said Mendez. Flatt bounced back with a pair of 7-0 decisions in the consolations, blanking Spencer Whitney, of Palmyra and then breaking open a scoreless match with Lampeter’s Austin Reiff with seven third period points. At 113, Weston Bare scored a 1:11 quarterfinals fall over Lampeter’s Riley Bonholtzer before getting knocked to the consolations with a 6-2 loss to Gio Luciano. The No. 2 seed from Hempfield was the eventual second place finisher. Bare came back with a solid 6-2 result over Central’s Connor Beck and then picked up a 1:42 fall over Warwick’s Owen Heffner to finish third. Seeded fourth at 126, Jackson Houghton was Solanco’s third bronze medal winner. He turned a 40 lead into a 36 second fall over Decacon Turner (Palmyra) in the opening round and then pinned Penn Manor’s Trevor Grassel in 5:17 to get to the semifinals opposite Central Dauphin’s Josh Miller. The eventual champ hung an 11-2 loss on the Solanco grappler, knocking him to the consolations. Houghton came back with this third fall of the tournament, putting Milton Hershey’s Josh Minners to his
back in 2:27 and then grabbed bronze with an 11-1 result against Grassel after holding a slim 2-1 lead heading into the final period. “Weston and Jackson both won some really good matches,” said Mendez. “And Jackson had to beat the Penn Manor kid twice.” Solanco’s string of thirds continued with Ronnie Fulton and Nick Yannutz. At 135, Fulton, seeded second, suffered a 3:55 fall to Penn Manor’s Owen Rohrer after opening
with a bye. He came back with a forfeit win and then dominated Elizabethtown’s Aiden Robinson 10-4 on the strength of three takedowns. He followed that up with a sudden victory, 5-3 medal winning decision over Warwick’s David Wooley. Down 3-2 late in the third, Fulton escaped to tie the match and then scored the winning takedown. “Ronnie tweaked his shoulder in the quarters and I don’t think he was quite 100% after that,” Mendez

section. “Just missing out on extending his season was senior Nate Neuhauser,” the coach continued. “He was one match away from Regionals. We thought he had a good chance but an injury kept him from being 100%. He was the fourth seed and is a hard worker in the room. Because of that work ethic, I’m sure he’ll do well in the workforce,” said Mendez. “Sports teach kids about commitment, sacrifice, and dedication and that’s just as important as winning medals.” GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Sometimes the things within your grasp are the hardest to hold on to. Solanco traveled to Berks Catholic Tuesday, February 18 for the quarterfinal round of the District Three Class 5A tournament and came home with a 51-44 season-ending loss. Through three quarters of basketball, Solanco never trailed. In fact, a jumper by Sammi Jackson (4 points, 3 rebounds) with 5:46 gave the visitors their largest lead of the fourth quarter, 41-35. Almost 3:30 later, the Saints’ Sophia Emkey knotted the score on a three-pointer and one possession later, with 1:32 left to play, Caraline Herb hit from downtown for the hosts first lead of the game, 46-43. They finished the final minute with a 5-1 run and held the Mares to just seven points in the quarter, five by Jade Eshleman who knocked down a game-high 16. “We led for 29 of the 32 minutes,” recalled head coach Chad McDowell. “We had good looks but couldn’t get the shots to fall. We just did not execute effectively in the waning minutes of the game. Sometimes the better team does not always win.” Jenna Dombach, who finished with eight points and three rebounds, opened the action with a three ball from the left wing and Solanco held a 9-7 lead after eight minutes. Berks tied the game on the first possession of the second quarter but the visitors maintained the lead after that. A three by Paige Phillips (8 points, 6 rebounds) pushed the advantage to 22-17 while a pair of
free throws by Dombach with 16.7 left in the half gave Solanco its biggest lead of the night, 24-17. The third quarter featured two more ties, 24-24 and 26-26. Nikki Trout put Solanco back in front while Phillips converted a turnover for a four point lead. The Saints finished the frame with a pair of treys but Phillips countered with her second, Eshleman added a pair of free throws and Trout scored on the baseline for a 37-32 Solanco lead. The No. 9 seed Saints cut it to two early in the fourth but Eshleman and Jackson scored back-to-back jumpers for that six point lead with 5:46 lead. They finished the quarter with just three more points, all by Eshleman while Berks countered with 12. Solanco, finishing the season at 1411, missed a trio of three pointers and three free throws over the final minute of play. “We were prepared for their zone,” said McDowell. “Once we found the holes, we were able to

execute and score. Unfortunately, missed opportunities late were the difference in the game. We played a great game and executed our game plan for the majority of the game but you cannot give good teams extra opportunities. We shot 3-for11 in that last quarter.” Eshleman’s 16 points included an 8-for-12 effort at the foul line. She also led with seven rebounds and dished out a team-high six assists. As a team, the Mares were 12-for-18 from the stripe. “Jade has really played well these last three games,” said McDowell. “Off-season work will be vital for Jade and our other post players. We need to develop our inside game this summer.” This was Solanco’s third straight trip to the District playoffs. Last year they were the top seed and hosted four games, going 2-2 and finishing as the fourth place team in the district. The 2017-18 season they were the seventh seed.

Parker Owens, the No. 4 seed, and then held off fifth seed Brett Barbush (Manheim Central), scoring two takedowns and a near fall in the third quarter to finish on top 9-1. Solanco’s final qualifier was Joey Vandegriff. The 132 pounder made quick work of Township’s Emanuel Diaz, picking up a round of 16 fall in 49 seconds. He followed that up with a 1:14 fall over McCaskey’s Jose Tirado before his momentum was slowed with a 7-1 loss to Hempfield’s Reagan Lefevre, the eventual silver medal winner. Vandegriff, a senior, bounced back with a 5-3 decision over Palmyra’s Matt Carroll and met up with Tirado, again. This time the McCaskey grappler led from start to finish in a 9-3 decision. “Joey lost to Tirado twice before so it was nice to get one back,” said Mendez. Also placing but just missing out on extending his season was Wade Adams. Seeded ninth at 152, Adams picked up an 8-4, first round win before suffering a 2:17 fall to eventual second place finisher Tye Weathersby (Central Dauphin) in the quarterfinals. Adams worked his way back through the consolations, earning a 5-1 decision over Township’s Alex Emerich and pinning Palmyra’s Roman Hall before getting pinned by Warwick’s Haydn Shreiner (2:47). “I told the kids that because our Photo by Mona Steinhauer section is so tough, I think we have a Solanco’s Paige Phillips is bumped out of bounds by Berks chance to do really well,” he added. Catholic’s Hope Schreiber during last Tuesday’s District Three “Five of the teams in the district Class 5A opener in Reading. team tournament were from our recalled. “But he recovered to win four straight to qualify.” Yannutz, wrestling at 195, jumped out to a 5-0 advantage before decking Warwick’s DaVonte Hess with a 1:01 quarterfinals fall

there are other themes as well, Erin said, listing relationships between parents and teenagers, the search for acceptance, finding self, and grief. “(The town members) can’t dance because of an accident that led to the death of (the pastor’s) son,” Erin said. “But despite the seemingly heavy themes, the star of the show is the dancing and the music.” The leads of the show are Kendell Beiler, who plays pastor Shaw Moore, whose grief has turned bitter, resulting in dogmatic regulations of acceptable behavior; Sophia Steinhauer, who portrays Ariel, Shaw’s daughter, who is chafing against the restrictions; and Jorge Burgos as Ren, the newcomer to town who questions the rules and encourages his peers to dance. Erin noted that Shaw has a bigger role in this version than in the film, with more time spent on his relationship with Ren. There are also more side stories - including Ren’s friendship with Willard, played by AJ Jackson, and Willard’s interest in Rusty, portrayed by Lilia McHugh - and additional music. “It’s a jukebox musical,” Erin said. Although the score is straight out of the 1980s, the setting is not. “We’re setting it in
the modern day to update it a bit,” she said. “The cast will wear current clothes and have cellphones. We want to mirror that these themes are timeless.” Jorge and Sophia are seniors, so this will be their last time on stage at Solanco, which is bittersweet. “It’s heartwarming that I’ll be leaving the stage with my best friend,” Jorge said. “It’s really awesome (to be starring together), especially being our senior year,” Sophia added. Jorge feels a strong connection to Ren, as they share some characteristics, particularly charismatic personalities and a love of dancing. On the other hand, Kendell, a junior, noted that his character is stern and somber, which can be a challenge to portray without becoming flat. Sophia has a lovehate relationship with Ariel, who does not get along with Shaw. “I relate to her rebellious spirit,” she said. “But if you were to look at her and learn something, she isn’t a bad person. She just wants to be her own person.” For more information about the production of “Footloose,” readers may call Kaufman at 717-786-5617.

ADVERTISER - Solanco Edition - February 26, 2020 - 11
The Clinic for Special Children (CSC) is formalizing and expanding its home-based pediatric palliative and hospice care program, Cherished Lives, for Plain (Amish and Mennonite) patients with the support of a $10,000 Community Partnership Grant from WellSpan Health. The expansion of palliative care services is driven by the needs of Plain patients with rare genetic disorders who are served by CSC. The WellSpan Health grant allows CSC to increase patient access to free, culturally
sensitive comfort and end-of-life care that includes treatment from a specially trained palliative care nurse, primary care physicians and specialists, if required, in the patient’s home. The grant also helps to fund bereavement services and grief resources for families, according to Keturah Beiler, nurse at CSC and co-founder of the Cherished Lives program. As a regional health system committed to assessing the health needs of its communities, WellSpan Health recognizes the need for end-of-life care in the region through its
emphasis on horizon planning in its Community Health Improvement Plan. For more details, readers may visit www.wellspan.org. The Clinic for Special Children is a nonprofit organization that is located in Strasburg and provides primary pediatric care and advanced laboratory services to those with genetic or other complex medical disorders. The organization is primarily supported through community fundraising events and donations. For more information, readers may visit www.clinicforspecialchildren.org.

Chocolate Festival from pg 1 By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
R055694
The Oxford United Methodist Church (OUMC) is looking for tasters, bakers and contestants for its seventh annual Chocolate Festival on Saturday, March 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. Those who would like to compete in the Chocolate Festival contest should bring their entries to the church fellowship hall between 8:30 and 10 a.m. on the morning of the event for judging. Judging will start promptly at 10 a.m. Categories to be judged are cakes/cupcakes, cookies, candy/fudge, brownies and other. A special children’s category is open to entrants age 16 and under. No frozen items will be accepted due to melting issues. First- through third-place winners in each category will receive ribbons, and an honorable mention will be awarded in each category. The Best in Show entry will receive a basket of prizes. Each entry must include one ingredient that is chocolate. An entry must consist of a full batch, such as a whole cake, 18 cupcakes, 36 cookies or an entire batch of candy in a disposable container. There is no fee to enter and no limit on the number of entries per person. Once items have been judged, they will be cut into generous sample-size portions and arranged on trays in the church hall. Patrons paying the entry fee will receive six tickets, each ticket allowing them to select from the wide variety of offerings. Those who would like additional treats may purchase additional tickets. Carryout containers will be provided. Attendees should not bring their own containers due to health department regulations. In addition to chocolate contest entries, chocolate items baked by church members will be available to purchase. An additional feature for the day will be the Kids Cookie Corner, where youngsters can decorate and take home a cookie of their own. There will also be a contest where attendees can guess the number of candies in a jar, as well as an opportunity to order chocolate eggs for Easter. All proceeds will benefit mission projects of the OUMC women’s organization. This will be the first Chocolate Festival for OUMC pastor Bern Kefer, who came to the church in July 2019. His favorite type of chocolate is fudge, which should be well represented at the Chocolate Festival. “I think (the festival) generates a lot of energy and fun for the church. I think it’s a really good thing to do,” he said. OUMC is located at 18 Addison St., Oxford. For more information, readers may call 610-932-9698. More information is also available by searching for “Oxford UM Church - Pennsylvania” on Facebook and then choosing Events. Pictured on front: The seventh annual Oxford United Methodist Church Chocolate Festival will be held on March 7. Among the organizing committee members are (front, from left) Barbara Vogt, Pattie Markley, Eleanor Brown, Sandi Curry, Lavenia Civitella, Patsy Reese, Vicky Kefer, (back) Judy Heath, Pat Fraver, Katie Heller and pastor Bern Kefer.
