Solid Rock Celebrates 25 Years BY COURTNEY MENGEL

his year, Solid Rock Youth Ministries is celebrating 25 years of serving the Quarryville community. Solid Rock Youth Ministries strives to earn trust through authentic mentoring relationships with kids in kindergarten through 12th grade so lives can be changed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. To accomplish this mission, Solid Rock offers several activities throughout the year, including after-school programs, art and drama programs, family fun events, and more. It all started in 1997, when Clair and Jackie Myers felt called by the Lord to provide kids in the community with the opportunity to worship together, so they formed a Friday night youth group. By 2001, the Myerses had found a home for their ministry at 34 E. State St., Quarryville, which is Solid Rock’s current location. The following year, Solid Rock offered its first elementary after-school program,

From Saturday, March 12, to Thursday, March 17, Quarryville residents can participate in a St. Patrick’s Day themed scavenger hunt.

In 2021, the Quarryville Borough hosted a variety of contests for Quarryville residents. “We decided to plan these events to boost morale and get the community to come together in spite of what’s going on,” explained Michelle Evans, administrative assistant for the Quarryville Borough. There have been three contests so far, which asked participants to create art from sidewalk chalk, write a “What Are You Thankful For?” essay, and display their Christmas lights. The Quarryville Borough decided to continue this initiative and has

announced its next themed contest to bring people some luck in time for St. Patrick’s Day. From Saturday, March 12, to Thursday, March 17, Quarryville residents can participate in a scavenger hunt for 12 four-leaf clovers, which will be placed outside and within the borough’s limits. No clovers will be hidden on residents’ private properties. Participants can either visit the borough’s municipal building, 300 St. Catherine St., Quarryville, or email Evans at evansm@ quarryvilleborough.com for a list of clues. Answers are due by 3:30 p.m. on March 17. Participants must write their answers on the list of See Scavenger Hunt pg 3

A photo depicting a red-breasted merganser duck on the Octoraro Reservoir taken by Michael Rucci of Cochranville was the Best of Show entry. “Each (photo) was taken in the Octoraro watershed and each one showcased the scenery, landscape, people and fun things that people do to enjoy the Octoraro Creek and its tributaries,” said Chotty Sprenkle, contest coordinator. This year, entrants are being asked to submit their photos in two formats: digitally and an 8-by-10-inch hard copy mounted on foam or hard cardboard. “We are asking people to provide them virtually for the judge and for the annual membership meeting, which will be virtual, and a hard copy for the traveling display,” said Sprenkle. “We had tremendous success taking (the photos) to display at the Oxford and Quarryville libraries last year.” All photographs must be

Scavenger Hunt from pg 1 “The scavenger hunt is a fun way to kick off spring,” said Evans. “It’s another community event for our little town. I love our community. The whole family can get in the car, read the clues, and hunt for some four-leaf clovers!” Evans mentioned that the borough would be unable to host the scavenger hunt without its

clues and take pictures of the four-leaf clovers in order to qualify for prizes. Those who find all 12 four-leaf clovers will be placed in a random drawing, and prizes will be awarded to three winners. Completed entries can be turned in at the borough’s municipal building, or they can be emailed to Evans at the aforementioned email address.

After a two-year hiatus, the 47th annual Woodcarving and Wildlife Art Festival, hosted by the Lancaster County WoodCarvers Club, will return to Millersville on Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival will take place inside the Student Memorial Center at Millersville University, which is on the opposite side of the street from 101 Shenks Lane, Millersville. Masks will be required per Millersville University policy. Masks will be provided to those who do not have one. “I personally am just excited to have the show back and

see friends and meet new friends,” said Ben Hershey, chairman of the festival. Hershey has been affiliated with the festival since 2009 but has been carving for 39 years. According to Hershey, anywhere from 1,100 to 1,500 people attend the event each year. This year’s theme is “Spring to Life,” and the featured artist will be Mike Dieter, who is a bird, decoy, and Santa carver. Sister clubs expected to exhibit at the event include the American National Cane Club (ANCC), Carroll Carvers, Conewago Carvers, Cumberland Valley Woodcarvers, West Shore Woodcarvers, Yorkarvers, PA Delaware Valley Woodcarvers, William Rush Woodcarvers Club, and

According to Nixon, she, the board, and the staff believe that the Lord wants to continue using Solid Rock as a way to share the Gospel with the community. Nixon noted that she is excited to continue to grow and offer more programs. “ We just want to be a place where families feel empowered and that when they send their kids here, they know that they’re safe,” said Nixon. There will be snacks, fellowship, and door prizes of gift cards and Solid Rock apparel. “The open house is perfect for those who have never heard of Solid Rock, have passed by the location but never went inside, and for those who came to Solid Rock as a student,” explained Nixon. “Come see what we’re up to and how we’ve grown these past 25 years. In September 2013, Jackie stepped down from her leadership position, and Raeanne Nixon joined the team as executive director. The ministry’s first-ever 5K and fun run took place in August 2018, and the inaugural Christmas teen gift program occurred in December that same year. 24-HOUR EMERGENCY SERVICE

When Dot Hartman, director of operations, community initiatives, for Landis Communities, first heard of Friends LifeCare a few years ago, one facet of the insurance - which is designed for those who want to stay at home as they age - attracted her and her husband. “A big part of it is that you get a care coordinator to walk with you,” said Hartman. Landis at Home has recently partnered with Friends LifeCare, based in the Valley Forge area. “(Friends LifeCare) was started because people wanted coverage for long-term care needs,” explained Hartman. “It’s meant to keep people who

ance program from the moment they sign up. “The care coordinator will meet with you,” she said. “You can do wellness planning. (Participants can have) as much or as little support as they want.” Hartman went on to explain that if a hospitalization occurs, the care coordinator can help the insured work through the next steps, such as setting up therapy and home care. She noted that Lancaster County has an established care coordinator.

“Landis (Communities) started talking with Friends LifeCare about a partnership five years ago,” said Hartman, who noted that Landis at Home is a preferred provider, but not the only option for those who choose Friends LifeCare. Readers who wish to attend the in-person seminar may register by calling 717-3813599 or visiting www.Friends LifeCare.org/Landis.
