The transition from middle school to high school can be difficult, so the members of Ophelia Club at Solanco High School have planned Girls’ Night Out to help. The event will be held at the high school, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville, from 3:15 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 20, for girls in grades seven and eight. Students coming from Swift and Smith middle schools may ride the activity bus over to the high school. Seventh- and eighth-grade girls who are enrolled at private schools or are homeschooled but who will attend Solanco High School for ninth grade are also invited to Girls’ Night Out. Attendees are encouraged to dress comfortably or bring a change of clothes. Sweatpants and sneakers are suggested, as some of the activities will involve physical movement. The goal of Girls’ Night Out is to celebrate being strong females, said Ophelia
Club adviser and high school guidance counselor Lindsay Capoferri. The activities have been planned around the concepts of building confidence, developing a healthy self-concept, working well with others, building connections, and celebrating uniqueness. Students will be taught how to deal with stress with positive coping strategies. “We don’t talk about this stuff - taking care of your emotional self - enough,â€? Capoferri said. “(Girls’ Night Out) is one night to have fun ‌ doing positive things.â€? Every attendee will be paired with an Ophelia Club member and assigned to a group. The groups will rotate through activity stations, where the attendees may participate in crafts, student-led nail polishing and hair styling, yoga guided by a professional instructor, confidence-building exercises, and games. Additionally, a female karate student will give a demonstration of basic selfdefense techniques. Dinner and snacks will be provided as well. See Girls’ Night Out pg 9

“It is amazing to know that our community is taking little steps to make big, positive, lifesaving changes in children’s lives all around the world,” said Lora Mangus Wenger, chair of the Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack event at Willow Street Mennonite Church (WSMC), 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street. WSMC has hosted six MobilePack events, with the efforts resulting in more than 1.3 million meals sent to malnourished children around the world. Wenger reported that meals packed at the WSMC events have been distributed in Somalia, Haiti, Belize, Dominican Republic, Malawi, and Uganda. It takes about 1,500 volunteers working in two-hour shifts to pack 300,000 meals in three days. “The more people who learn about FMSC, the more support grows; as a result, more meals can get packed and more people in need will be fed,” Wenger remarked. “One outgrowth of our event is that a church from Berks County will be hosting their first event this May after having participated in our event. That is exactly what we have been hoping will occur: more MobilePack events taking place, resulting in more people being fed around the world.” The MobilePack has also made a local impact. Last year, WSMC accepted donations for the Lancaster County Council of Churches Food Hub, and it will do so again at this year’s MobilePack event, which will be held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, March 27, 28, and 29. “Unfortunately, food insecurity is a local challenge as a well as a global one for many (people),” Wenger remarked. Volunteers may bring 16ounce containers of peanut butter, 16-ounce bags of rice, 12ounce boxes of macaroni and cheese or pasta, canned potatoes, pouch meals such as Hamburger Helper, and canned
salmon, chicken, or tuna to the WSMC MobilePack event. The Food Hub is located in Lancaster city, but it serves households throughout Lancaster County, Wenger said. Additionally, every person who signs up for a packing shift is invited to make a donation that covers the cost of a box of 216 packed meals, which is the average amount a single person packs during a two-hour shift. Donations may be made electronically by visiting www.fmsc.org, clicking on Volunteer, and selecting MobilePack Events to find the WSMC event. Following the path to the MobilePack event at the FMSC website will also present individuals with the option to register for packing shifts. Two-hour shifts are available on March 27 at 1:30, 4, and 6:30 p.m.; on March 28 at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and 5 p.m.; and on March 29 at 1:30 and 4 p.m. “Some shift times are more popular than others and fill quickly,” Wenger said. Children as young as age 5 are welcome to participate in the MobilePack event. For safety and efficiency, specific student-toadult ratios have been set. An adult must accompany each student in kindergarten through second grade. One adult may supervise up to three students in third through sixth grades, four students in seventh through ninth grades, and five students in 10th through 12th grades. Disabled people are welcome to participate in the event, and seated jobs will be available. For more information about the FMSC MobilePack event at WSMC, readers may email Wenger at lmw4fmsc@gmail.com or call WSMC at 717-464-2422.

He described Huckabee as warm and welcoming, noting that those characteristics serve Huckabee well in his role as a pastor. “He’s a great exemplar of (passing on our faith to the next generation), and he can challenge us with credibility,” Myers added. “People tend to listen to him respectfully because he’s respectful.” The program will also include performances by DCA choral groups led by Lindsey Stauffer. While the singers are primarily in the upper grades, 15 members of the lower school’s Joyful Noise group will join them on stage. Additionally, a display of artifacts and media from the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center will be available for attendees to view. The center is

As the April 17 event is marking the 10th anniversary of the Remember America Speaker Series, a special video presentation that includes clips of previous speakers will be part of the program. Jennie Straub, client services and outreach specialist at Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone, is concerned by the percentage of parents who are unaware of tech abuse in teenage relationships. Some researchers put that statistic at more than 80%, and that spurs Straub to let parents and their children know that it does not have to be that way. During February, which is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, she is especially keen to get the word out about a curriculum Cornerstone offers to both students and parents. Straub is certified to teach two curriculums that pertain to adolescent safety and health with regard to dating issues. Relationships Under Construction, developed by Catherine Wood, is a relationship sexual risk avoidance curriculum for the whole person. It is for youths in grades five through 12 and can be taught in age-appropriate segments. Constructing Safe Relationships is a dating violence curriculum from the same publisher. The curriculum is set up to be taught in three sessions to seventh- and eighthgrade students and in four sessions to ninth- through 12thgrade students. Debbie Davenport, executive director at Cornerstone, is also certified to teach the curriculum. Both curriculums can be modified to be taught to parents as well. Cornerstone acquired the curriculums about three years ago. According to Straub, both curriculums were developed specifically to be taught in schools. “(Both) meet all the federal government guidelines and requirements for sexual risk avoidance training in schools,” said Straub, who noted that the scope and sequence for teachers is provided. “This curriculum was developed to offer an alternative to comprehensive sex education, which will start in kindergarten.” Straub added that Pennsylvania
Jennie Straub, client services and outreach specialist at Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone, Gap, holds two curriculums that pertain to adolescent safety and health with regard to dating issues. Straub is certified to teach the curriculums, which meet federal guidelines, to students and parents in the area. is an abstinence-only state. “(That means that) whatever you teach in the school must say that abstinence is the only way to 100% prevent sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy,” explained Straub. “That’s what this curriculum teaches.” Straub noted that the curriculum can be taught to youth groups, to community groups, at counseling ministries, or to parent groups such as a Parent Teacher Organization. “I feel it’s really important for parents and adults,” said Straub, who pointed to a section in the dating violence curriculum that she finds especially pertinent. “There is a session about internet safety and how to keep your children safe from predators,” she said. “The idea is that a lot of children and teenagers don’t understand the dangers of what they can get into on social media. The more the parents are educated, (the better they can) recognize when their child is cyberbullied or other negative (areas) of their technology.” She noted that she believes teaching parents about the red flags of dating violence is especially important. Another concept Straub feels
should be impressed upon children is the life success sequence. “It’s statistically proven that if you go to school and you graduate and go to college or start a career, (and then) get married, and then have children … in that sequence, you are much less likely to end up in poverty,” said Straub. Straub has already been invited to talk to members of sports teams in one Lancaster County school. She added that some schools hold activities related to dating violence during February to help raise awareness. Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone is a resource center for those experiencing unplanned pregnancies and a limited obstetrics clinic. Services include pregnancy testing, limited ultrasound, abstinence presentations, STD education and prenatal and parenting incentive programs. Cornerstone is located at 5380 Lincoln Highway, Suite 3, Gap. For more information about the organization or the curriculum, readers may visit https://pregnancy resources.org. Girls’ Night Out was first held in 2017, but because of personnel shifts, it was not offered again until this year. Ophelia Club members Christina Cylc, Emily Stalfire, and Jessica Mendenhall are excited to be part of its return. “It can be intimidating to start a new school,” Jessica remarked. “As a freshman, you can feel unwanted, on edge.” “I think it’s cool that we’re pairing people,” Emily commented. “Having people they can look up to will make it an easier transition (to high school).” Capoferri noted that Ophelia Club has a lot of freshman and sophomore members. “Hopefully (the Girls’ Night Out attendees) will know someone in a few years (when they enter high school),” she said. “It’s a nice connection to have,” Christina said. “When I was a freshman, the first day of school I texted a senior I knew from before because I didn’t know what to do with my field hockey bag.” Girls’ Night Out is also a good recruiting tool for Ophelia Club, which is dedicated to promoting
the development of healthy selfesteem in young people, and it may get incoming high school students excited about Ophelia Day, Christina added. “The club provides a landing place, especially if a student doesn’t know what other clubs to join the first week of school,” she said. “Ophelia Day is the one day that everyone looks forward to all year,” Jessica remarked. About 500 students throughout the Solanco School District typically participate in Ophelia Day. Organized by Ophelia Club, Ophelia Day offers intellectually and physically disabled students in the district an opportunity to engage in a variety of outdoor games and activities. To attend Girls’ Night Out, students will need to have their parents or guardians sign permission slips obtained from the middle schools’ guidance offices and return them before Friday, March 13. Individuals may also contact Capoferri at lindsay_capoferri@ solancosd.org or 717-786-2151, option 3, to request a permission slip or obtain more information about the event or Ophelia Club.

lost to that kid. He came back with a 13-7 decision over Azzy Ibrahim and then was pinned by the eventual fifth place finisher. I was really impressed with the way Jackson battled this year,” Mendez continued. “He qualified last year as well but I think he wrestled much better this year.” Vandegriff got a tough draw, facing the eventual champ, Bryce Brennan (Red Land) in the opener and suffering a 19-8 major decision. He came back to post a 2:43 fall over William Smyser (Spring Grove) but ended his season with an 8-1 loss to fifth place finisher Gabriel Belga (Cumberland Valley). “He finished fourth in sectionals so he got a tough draw to open,” said Mendez. “And the Belga kid was not expected to be in the consolation bracket.” GIRLS’ BASKETBALL It was only fitting that Solanco’s successful team finish this year also included some individual standout efforts. Senior Jenna Dombach was voted, by the coaches, as a First Team Section Three All-Star while both Jade Eshleman, who was an allstar last year, and Nikki Trout were Second Team selections. Trout was also voted to the Section Three AllDefensive team while Ilynd Rapant was an All-Academic selection. Head coach Chad McDowell was voted as Section Three Coach of the Year. “Jenna, a three-time all-star, led the team in scoring with 229 points and a 9.2 average,” pointed out McDowell. “She finishes her career with 754 points, 401 career rebounds, 128 steals and 173 assists. “Jade was second in scoring with 209 points for an 8.2 average,” he continued. “She also led the team in rebounds with 202. That was her priority every game. “Nikki was our best defender and Photo by Vaughn Brown had the task of guarding the best Solanco’s Dominic Flatt makes short work of Governor Mifflin’s Josh Horst, turn- player on other teams night in and ing him for a quick, 44-second fall in a 106-pound opener at the South Central night out,” the coach continued. That’s a positive accomplishment. Many teams didn’t have anyone advance.” Flatt got going early, posting back-to-back pinfall wins, the first in just 44 seconds over Governor Mifflin’s Josh Horst. The second came early in the third period of the quarterfinals. Flatt turned Eli Gregoris (Big Spring) in 4:35 to get to the semifinals opposite Dallastown’s Caden Dobbins. This one was a battle. Tied at 3-3 in the first, Dobbins took a 4-3 lead in the second before Flatt’s escape early in the third again tied the score. Flatt’s takedown with one minute remaining put the Solanco wrestler up two but Dobbin’s worked an escape just three seconds later and never got closer. “I think that was Dom’s best match of the tournament,” said Photo by Vaughn Brown Mendez. “That was a tough kid and The Mules’ Joey Vandegriff spars with Bryce Brennan of Red Dom wrestled smart after getting Land during a 132-pound opening-round pairing in the South that takedown.” Central AAA Regionals at Spring Grove High School. string of wins came to an end. Central Dauphin’s Matt Repos earned the gold with a 14-0 major decision. “That’s the same kid that won the section,” noted Mendez. “He was tough.” At the other end of the weight classes, Yannutz followed a similar path. The 195-pounder earned a 1:25 fall over Gabe Icavone (Conrad Weiser) before decking Sam Rodriguez (Gettysburg) in 3:31 in the quarterfinals. In the semis, Yannutz faced the eventual champ, Jake Lucas of Cumberland Valley and was dealt a 4-1 loss. The junior rebounded with a 7-3 decision over Robert Utz (South Western) in the consi-semis. Josh Harkless earned the bronze when he pinned Yannutz in 2:27. “I thought Nick wrestled well,” said Mendez. “This will be the first trip to states for both Dom and Nick,” he added. “Anything can happen now but we’re going there to medal.” Weston Bare (113) and Jared Fulton (120) both went 0-2 on the weekend. “This was their first trip to districts,” noted Mendez of the
freshman and sophomore. “They got there and it was good experience.” Wrestling at 138, Ronnie Fulton turned in Solanco’s next best record, going 2-2. Down 3-2 early in the second period, Fulton outscored York Suburban’s Noah Rice 6-2 through the rest of the bout to win 8-4. He faced the eventual silver medal winner, Liam Strouse, of Northern York, in the quarterfinals and lost a 15-4 major decision. He gained some momentum with a 128 consi win over Kyle Miller (Cumberland Valley) but saw his season come to a close against Owen Rohrer. The Comet wrestler advanced with a 5-2 decision. “Ronnie got pinned by Rohrer in the semifinals of the sectional tournament,” recalled Mendez. “He wrestled much tougher this time around. This year 138 was a tough weight class.” Jackson Houghton (126), Joey Vandegriff (132) and Ronnie Fulton (138) all earned one win against a pair of losses. “Jackson opened against Garden Spot’s Mason Casey,” Mendez recalled. “That was the third time he

business’s Community Serve Day to build a 2,000-square-foot food bank for Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNMinistries). The team completed the project in five days rather than eight weeks and saved SNMinistries an amount equal to what SNMinistries had spent on food in a year. IM also remodeled an 1860s-era church for a Christian drug-and-alcohol rehab center in Lancaster city and built a 900-square-foot cathedral in the woods for Black Rock Retreat. “We wanted to use our gifts and talents to help other nonprofits meet their needs, Beakes remarked. In 2019, IM made repairs to more than 50 homes, saving their owners nearly $50,000. It is aiming to work on 60 houses this year. Two years ago, IM began a pilot program with Lancaster County Prison’s community service work release program, which provides opportunities for nonviolent/nonsex offenders to serve the community, receive training, and increase their opportunities for employment. Between eight to 12 men work on IM projects six days a week. A dozen men who completed the program now have full-time employment, and seven started businesses. “I have never done construction, but I’m interested in it, said Joshua Santos, a work release participant. “This week, I got into a

County. More than 450 families have been served by IM, and 142 families have been able to give back without prompting. “We work with the extreme poor, who usually make $15,000 a year or less, Beakes explained at a 10th anniversary celebration dinner in Lampeter on Feb. 22. “When they have support, they can grow and take risks. To illustrate his point, Beakes asked attendees to raise their hands if they could think of five resources or people they could call if their vehicles broke down on the side of the road. Most of the people IM serves do not have even one person, he said. “We’re building friendships, a network (of support), to help them rise above where they never thought they’d be, Beakes said. IM started out as a way for church groups to save on the costs of weeklong mission trips by offering a local work camp. Over the decade, it has morphed into much more. Beakes related that IM has overseen the project management on the renovation of 30 houses, most of which had been condemned. “We restored neighborhoods and communities, he said. “We not only made houses beautiful, but we changed lives. During the past 10 years, IM volunteers worked with J.K. Mechanical staff members on the
house and helped frame a wall. The experience confirmed his wish to receive formal training after he completes his sentence. Paul Schober of Quarryville is a work release participant who has an extensive background in construction. During his three weeks with IM, he has worked on practically all aspects of gutting and rebuilding a house. In an unrelated process, the week before Schober started with IM, the organization rebuilt the foundation and the floor for his mother’s mobile home. He is excited to help on other IM projects. “I love it, to be able to help someone else, he said. “To give back is a wonderful feeling. The IM goals for 2020 include developing plans for affordable
