SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

SNMinistries Purchases New Facility ince 2012, Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNMinistries) has served the community from its leased location at 355 Buck Road, Quarryville. The facility is largely occupied by shelving units and cold storage for the faith-based food bank; it includes several offices as well. In recent years, however, the organization has wanted a larger facility, executive director Teresa Dolan noted. “Where we are now, we have a great food bank space but no room for programs,” Dolan explained. “Our goal is to have more services and opportunities to have multiple needs met, to offer programs that might be offered (in Lancaster city), such as budgeting and (job-seeking support).” Dolan and SNMinistries board members had intermittently looked for a new facility over the past two years, but recently, the opportunity to purchase the former Masonic Lodge, 14 S. Church St., Quarryville, was presented to them.
Chamber Seeks Scholarship Applicants The Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce (SLCCC) invites high school seniors at Solanco, Lampeter-Strasburg, and Penn Manor, as well as homeschool seniors who live in those districts, to apply for $500 business-related scholarships. In addition, the Chamber will also award two $250 military scholarships. The business-related scholarships are awarded annually to one student in each district who plans to pursue a business-related major in college or technical school or See Scholarships pg 7
groups, and individuals have collected food for distribution to households in need, and financial resources have come from those donors as well. Anyone who would like to be kept apprised of ministry needs is invited to visit w w w. s o l a n c o n e i g h b o r h o o d ministries.org to sign up for the newsletter, which is distributed about once a month. Fundraising plans will be announced in the newsletter, Dolan said. When it is time to move, volunteer labor assistance will be requested. The goal is to complete the transition to Church Street sometime this year. Dolan noted that current staff members and volunteers are excited about the opportunity to start from scratch as far as organizing goes. See SNMinistriespg 6

“The Masons had wanted (the building) to go to a ministry, and they reached out to us,” Dolan said. “God orchestrated the whole thing perfectly.” The three-story building is at least 100 years old and will need some renovations, including upgrades necessary for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, before occupation. However, it offers many benefits, including an additional 3,000 square feet of space, parking, privacy for clients, and access to Huffnagle Park, where children can enjoy supervised play while their parents or guardians attend meetings and classes. “We are in the process of meeting with contractors to see what needs to be done,” Dolan commented. “We will be meeting with someone to figure out if a capital campaign will be needed.” Dolan noted that until now, SNMinistries has not engaged in formal fundraising. Flatt Grabs District 3 Regional Silver Medal

Solanco’s Kendal Janssen battles for the ball under the basket in the Mares’ 54-20, nonleague loss at York Suburban on February 25. BY MONA STEINHAUER
Three Solanco wrestlers qualified to compete in the District Three South Central Regional Championships at Spring Grove High School on Saturday, Feb. 27. One not only earned a silver medal but extended his season for yet one more tournament and a chance to get to states. Dom Flatt picked up two wins before facing Manheim Townships Kaedyn Williams, in the final, for the fourth time this year. The Solanco senior lost 4-3. “Really, each time he gets closer to winning,” said head coach Tony Mendez. “It was 4-3 with a minute to go. We talked about having that nothing to lose attitude. I mean, a loss is a loss so push and take a chance. “In a normal year, second place puts you in states,” the coach continued. “But the covid restrictions make it harder this year. The super regional, in Altoona, is next. The top four get to states.” Flatt is 18-4 on the year with all four losses to Williams.
Flatt, wrestling at 106, opened with a convincing 19-8 major decision over Spring Grove sophomore Levi Snyder (19-1). In the semifinals, Flatt worked a 7-3 decision over undefeated freshman James Garcia of Wilson, fighting off a 2-1 deficit heading into the third period. “We expected that quarterfinals match to be a bit tighter,” said Mendez. “Dom just wrestled very well. In the semis, he seemed a bit tight at first, a bit cautious, knowing that he needed a win to move on. He came around and scored more in the third period.” Joining Flatt at Spring Grove was Jackson Houghton and Ronnie Fulton. Houghton, wrestling at 132, dropped a 7-4 decision in the quarterfinal and then met Garden Spot junior Garrett Gehr, who prevailed with a 13-1 major decision. Gehr went on to place third. Fulton suffered a similar fate. The senior dropped a 6-0 decision to Dallastown junior Caden Dobbins, the eventual 138pound second place finisher. He faced Daniel Boone’s JT Hogan in
the consolations and suffered a 13-3 major decision. Hogan finished fourth overall. “Ronnie and Jackson wrestled well,” said Mendez. “It’s the top eight right away and the consolations are tough. You’re going up against someone who made the finals the week before, not just a fourth-place guy. There is no room for error. “On the plus side, with all the restrictions, these guys (Dom, Ronnie and Jackson) are my seniors,” Mendez added, “and they were South Central Regional qualifiers.” GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Hoping the momentum of a Wednesday night upset victory over Elco would continue, Solanco traveled to York Suburban Thursday, Feb. 25, but a second upset was not in the cards. YS, seeded ninth in District Three Class 5A, held Solanco to single digits in all four quarters and tallied 19 points in the second frame en route to a 54-20 win. “It was a tall task for our program,” said head coach Chad McDowell. “We needed to play a quality opponent to try to give ourselves an opportunity to qualify for districts. “Playing back-to-back, after an emotional, highly contested game the night before, took a toll on us,” he added. “We struggled to find a rhythm on both sides of the floor.” The hosts, knocking down 10 treys on the night (40%), opened with a three-ball and never looked back. They held Solanco to four points in the
quarter and led 3110 at the break. Both teams connected on seven field goals, but the Mares did not hit a single three, which proved to be the difference. Nikki Trout paced Solanco’s offense with six points. Suburban’s Grace Hare netted five triples and finished with a game-high 15 points. “We played hard and did what we could,” said McDowell. “They made their shots and played solid defense. “I’m proud of our efforts,” he added. “We played hard each Staff photo possession and I love Solanco’s Dominic Flatt works towards a 19-8 major decision over Spring the heart we play Grove’s Levi Snyder in a 106-pound first-round bout in the South Central with.” AAA Regional Tournament at Spring Grove on February 27. All proceeds will benefit the charity, which provides breast cancer patients with funds to buy groceries, pay rent and mortgages, and cover day care fees and medical bills. It also provides funds for cancer screenings. “Wherever the need is of the patient is what we help with,” Charles said. “We have filled oil tanks and put tires on a vehicle for a one-vehicle family. We have paid electric bills and bought Christmas presents by giving a family a Walmart gift card.” Charles lost her mother to breast cancer in 1989 at the age of 49. In March of 2009, her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Soon after, the charity began. “Within weeks of our sister’s diagnosis, the assistant at our office was also diagnosed,” Charles recalled. “My husband, Dave, and I wanted to be able to help. We held a bake sale to help with their expenses. We raised over $9,000.” She said that in addition to the bake sale, the money was raised
through sponsors and a sale of T-shirts. In 2020, Help The Fight assisted about 200 individuals. “COVID shut things down for a while. Those that needed assistance or screenings did not get them. We had a real rush when things opened,” Charles said. “Cancer is so unkind, and it does not stop
during a pandemic.” Tickets for the designer purse giveaway must be purchased by Monday, March 22. For more information, to purchase tickets or to sponsor a handbag, readers may call 717-455-7095, email helpthefightnow@ gmail.com or visit www.help thefight.org or www.facebook .com/helpthefight.

will be entered into a random drawing. There will be 30 winners in the 30 days of April. Ticket holders must be 18 years of age or older to participate. “Each day we will pull a name,” explained Lynda Charles, president and founder of the organization. “The name that we pull will get the designer bag of that day. Hopefully, people will buy more than one ticket.” The giveaway replaces the organization’s previous fundraiser, a designer bag bingo. “Last year, just prior to COVID, we actually had our very first designer bag bingo at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster,” Charles reported. “People loved it but with COVID our fundraising events have altered, just as everyone else’s has. We decided to do this for the month of April.” Currently, the organization has about 20 bags that it purchased brand new by designers Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Tory Burch, Coach and others. Sponsors are needed to fund the cost of the remaining bags. “We have a lot of styles and colors,” Charles pointed out. “With our choices, we are trying to appeal to as many people as possible.”

“ We’ve never owned a building before,” Dolan remarked. “We’ve been telling our volunteers to start a wish list for how they want it to be. Everybody has lots of good ideas.” In the meantime, SNMinistries is continuing to oper-
ate as usual. At the height of the pandemic, the need for emergency food assistance tripled. Now, households are seeking rental and heating assistance. The current concern for many clients is avoiding eviction, Dolan said, adding, “We have funds that
we’re able to help with that, and we partner with other organizations to do what we can to help with landlords.” For more information about SNMinistries or to seek help, readers may visit the aforementioned website or call 717-786-4308.

The Solanco School District has announced several scholarship opportunities for Solanco seniors. The Solanco community funds many scholarships for Solanco seniors who plan to continue their education beyond high school. Scholarship applications can be accessed through Schoology through Wednesday, March 31. The Solanco Education Foundation will award several $1,000 scholarships to Solanco seniors. The scholarships include the Futures Scholarship, which will be awarded to one or more graduating seniors whose parents or guardians did not attend a college or university, and the Opportunity Scholarship, which will be awarded to one or more graduating seniors who may not meet typical scholarship criteria and who have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 to 3.2. The SLCCC will award two scholarships to students who will enlist in a branch of the U.S. military. A GPA of 2.0 or higher is required. Mock Trial Championships Slated The Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Statewide High School Mock Trial Competition will be held virtually this year, with 233 teams from 199 high schools across Pennsylvania set to compete in the district and regional levels. Sponsored by the PBA Young Lawyers Division, Pennsylvania’s mock trial program is now in its 38th year and is one of the largest in the nation. During the competition, eight-member student teams are given the opportunity to argue both sides of the case before a judge. The students, who play the roles of lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants, are assisted by teacher coaches and lawyer advisers in preparing for competition. Lawyers and community leaders serve as jurors and sometimes judges for the mock trials. The juries determine the winners in each trial based on the teams’ abilities to prepare their cases, present arguments, and follow court rules.

Ben Franklin’s TechCelerator @South Central PA will offer local entrepreneurs from Adams, York, Lancaster, Lebanon, Dauphin, Cumberland, Franklin, and Perry counties a virtual 10-week Business Startup Boot Camp. Business owners who want to expand their network, engage with serial entrepreneurs, and participate in discussions with experts in marketing, sales, and finance to help shape their business and develop a pitch presentation are encouraged to apply. The boot camp entails a weekly three-hour group session with content experts and a weekly one-hour session with a start-up business mentor to discuss individual needs and development opportunities. The goal of the program is to provide a framework that will enable individuals to have the information needed to determine if it is the right time to start a tech business.
