“Small museums have struggled to get the word out, to educate people on what they offer,” Drennen explained. “It’s such a rich history in this area. (Experience History) would be a great opportunity to … share information about their museum to our patrons.” “I talked with a lot of people, and they were excited about it,” commented library board president Anthony Cavallaro. “This is totally for the community. out to our partners. While parents are focusing on workplace development and saving for living in their own homes, Clare House staff members strive to keep life typical for the children. Birthday celebrations are routinely held for the youngsters. “We aim to be family-friendly, O’Neill said. Sometimes the parents are little more than children themselves. Clare House has been increasingly serving young people transitioning out of foster care as well as high school students. “It takes time to build rapport, said program director Dawn Allen, adding that she is thrilled when a client moves from reticence to openness. Clare House Lancaster is entirely donor-funded, making fundraisers like “The House Always Wins an important part of its budget. Volunteers are also crucial to operations, as they help with maintenance, child care, homework, and encouragement for clients. O’Neill would like to develop a mentorship program and welcomes inquiries from interested volunteers. “The house always wins is not what people who enjoy gaming want to hear, but there is an exception. W hen the third biennial “The House Always Wins fundraiser event is held on Friday, April 3, Clare House Lancaster and its residents - and, by extension, the community at large - will be the real winners. The 1920s-themed party will take place in the Imperial Grande Ballroom of the Holiday Inn Lancaster, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster, from 7 to 11 p.m. Parking will be available in the neighboring Duke Street garage, and tickets will be validated at the front desk of the hotel. The Keating Jazz Orchestra will provide music for dancing, heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served, and a cash bar will be open. Professionals will host a variety of games. “The House Always Wins is designed to be an enjoyable way for individuals and businesses to support Clare House Lancaster, whose mission is to help homeless women and children become stabilized and

build healthy, empowered lives. The organization was founded by a group of Catholic nuns 40 years ago, said Maryanne O’Neill, who became the executive director on June 12, 2019, after previously heading up Mom’s House of Lancaster. Clare House no longer identifies as faithbased, but a number of religious organizations in Lancaster County provide support. Clare House provides housing for single women and their children for up to a year and offers an additional six months of after care. The two houses at 342-344 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster, can accommodate seven families with up to 20 children. “We are one of the few shelters that allow children - especially boys - under age 18 to stay with their moms, O’Neill said, adding that keeping families together reduces stress on both mothers and children. Every woman is paired with a case manager, who helps her find employment and, if needed, child care. Clients are also connected with mental health services. A weekly group therapy session was recently launched at Clare House, and the feedback from the clients was overwhelmingly positive. “About 75% of people coming into our program have experienced trauma, O’Neill reported. While women and families live at Clare House, the organization provides everything they need except for food, which the women can usually get for themselves with SNAP or TANF benefits. If they do not have benefits, the case manager helps them to apply, and the Clare House community rallies around the client. “That’s what’s great about the Lancaster community, case manager Michelle Rybner remarked. “If we need something, we reach

Grace Community Church (GCC) of Willow Street, 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street, will hold its annual benefit auction on Friday, March 27, from 5 to 9 p.m. From 5 to 7:30 p.m., a silent auction will be open, and dinner prepared by Hess’s Barbecue Catering Inc., will be available for purchase. A live auction will begin at 6 p.m. Child care for youngsters age 5 and under will be offered from 6 to 7:30 p.m. While no cost has been set for the child care, donations will be accepted. Only cash will be accepted for the meal, with separate prices set for children ages 3 to 10 and for people age 11 and older. The menu will be “take what you want” and will include pork barbecue, pit beef, hot dogs, coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, green beans, and beverages. The auctions will feature more than 50 gift cards, gift baskets, unique experiences, Lancaster County antiques and collectibles,

and framed, signed, and numbered artwork. Youth and online pastor Addison Roberts said that more donations for the auction are expected to arrive in the weeks before the event. The GCC event has traditionally been held on a Friday night rather than on a Saturday morning like many other fundraising auctions. “I think it helps create this very fun atmosphere to our auction,” Roberts said. “It is a night out.” The proceeds from the March 27 activities will be used by GCC Youth to send students to Momentum Youth Conference in Indiana and on a mission trip to Philadelphia this summer. “Momentum is an opportunity that many of our students have described as life-changing,” Roberts remarked. Students will attend main group sessions and participate in other activities, including visits to areas surrounding the conference to evangelize. “They meet students from across the country and learn

about one another’s experiences, challenges, and goals,” Roberts continued. “The week also provides the opportunity for our students to be taught and trained in sharing the love of Jesus in word and action.” The mission trip to Philadelphia has been coordinated with Urban Hope Training Center. The organization aims to train Christians in cross-cultural urban ministry and offers outreach programs to children and youths. For more information about the benefit auction, readers may visit www.gccws.net/auction or email Roberts at addison@gccws.net. Solanco earned a third-place finish in the Pennsylvania Governor’s Regional STEM Competition, focusing on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). This is the third consecutive year that Solanco has finished in the top three, having won the regional competition the past two years. Only four points separated the top three teams in this year’s contest. The team’s entry in the competition involved use of a device dubbed the Mobile Emergency Naloxone Distributor (MEND), a long-range drone that can quickly distribute naloxone to individuals experiencing an opioid overdose before EMS arrives. Solanco’s team members are Caroline Arrowsmith, Gabi Dolan, Jenna Brown, Owen Brazelton, and Jack Hertzler. High school teacher Caley Roark is the Solanco STEM coach. Teacher Leslie McRobbie, an emergency medical technician, helped the team learn about naloxone delivery, and Solanco alumnus Garrett Duvall, an aviation expert, provided advice about unmanned aircraft. members of the ensemble include playing multiple roles, where they have to develop their own personalities for their characters, which Wagner said really adds fun for the audience. Wagner said she had wanted to do “Joseph” for some time for several reasons. “It has a great story and theme of forgiveness,” she said. “You can really play with the quirky characters of all the brothers.” She hopes that audience members will leave feeling uplifted by the messages of both stories. “I hope they walk away singing the songs from ‘Joseph,’” she said. Readers who would like to purchase tickets to the LCHS spring plays may email tbrill@lchsyes.org or call 717-509-0310.

Joseph rises to prominence from slavery in Egypt. Narrators will include Bernadette Fertal, Katie Lyle, Sheridan Riva, and Isabelle Titzer. Pharaoh will be played by Oliver Klemmer and Potiphar by Xavier LeFevre. The sungthrough musical is similar to a rock opera. Although the musical styles vary, from country-western and calypso to bubblegum pop and rock ’n’ roll, Wagner said that the music is not difficult. Challenges of staging the show have included the fast-paced and nearly constant choreography, including a children’s chorus of 23 made up of students from area Catholic elementary schools, and adding the special effects to make the show feel more like a rock concert. Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) spring play director Tracy Wagner had a problem she needed to solve. “(I wanted) to highlight strong actors and give students who didn’t have the time to devote to ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ an opportunity to take part (in a show),” explained Wagner. To remedy the problem, she chose to present a one-act version of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” along with “Joseph.” Both plays will be presented at the school, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, by a cast of 30 students on Thursday through Saturday, March 19 through 21, at 7 p.m. A 2 p.m. matinee will be held on Sunday, March 22. “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” will open the show with a 40-minute presentation, followed by the 90-minute “Joseph.” “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” is based on the children’s book written in 1950 by C.S. Lewis. The plot revolves around the four Pevensie siblings: Lucy, played by Alexis Lenhart; Edmund, played by Xavier LeFevre; Susan, played by Maddi Lewis; and Peter, played by Jacob Fertal. The children have been removed from London

as part of a wartime evacuation to the countryside home of a friend of their parents. The presentation begins with Lucy, the youngest sibling, opening a wardrobe to discover the fantasyland of Narnia, where it is always winter, but never Christmas. Lucy’s siblings join her on subsequent visits to Narnia and encounter mythical creatures including a White Witch, portrayed by Natalie Knox, who rules the land instead of the rightful king, Aslan the Lion, portrayed by Peyton Sheaffer. A battle, for which Wagner has brought in fight choreographer Dan Burke, ensues as the children venture with Aslan and other creatures to restore Narnia to its proper ruler. LCHS students recently became International Thespian Society Troupe 8880, and student director Aria Yang will be at the helm for “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.” Wagner noted that video projection has been added to the backdrop and that she is especially impressed with the makeup that will be used to portray the animals. “Joseph,” created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, is a musical based on the Genesis account of Joseph, played by Kameron Garcia. The son of Jacob, played by Jim Mikulski,

Yannutz, Flatt Compete In States by Mona Steinhauer

Nick Yannutz battles Selinsgrove’s Ryan Aument for the takedown in a 195-pound, preliminary-round meeting in the PIAA Class AAA Championships in Hershey on March 5. Yannutz went 1-2 in the tournament with a 3-2 consolation-round win over Nikolas Miller of Central Mountain and losses to Aument, 6-2, in the preliminaries and Hazleton’s Seth Hunsinger, 5-3, in consolation round 2.

Nick Yannutz and Dom Flatt represented Solanco in the PIAA Wrestling Championships which got underway March 5 at Hershey’s Giant Center. Both wrestlers came away with just one win in the tournament but were two of only 19 Lancaster-Lebanon League matmen that qualified for the big dance. Flatt, wrestling at 106, was the first to take the mat. He got a tough draw, facing eventual champ Vincent Kilkeary (Greater Latrobe) and was pinned in 2:40. “That was a tough first match,” said head coach Tony Mendez. “But Dom also felt that he started a little slow. Some of it was probably nerves in his first state tournament match. After that, he seemed to wrestle more like himself.” Flatt came back in the consolations with a 3-1 decision over Caden Dobbins (Dallastown). Tied at 1-1 in the second, Flatt scored a takedown with 47 seconds remaining to advance. In the consi round of 16, Flatt’s season ended with a 2:21 fall to Hayden Cunningham (State College). He finished the season with a 33-7 record. “The most valuable thing for Dom in this tournament was the experience,” stated Mendez. “Each wrestler keeps a journal with their goals and affirmations in it. Dom took notes from the tournament performance on things he can improve on in the off-season and what the experience was like. He is

already thinking of what he can to do make his senior year better.” Yannutz, a senior, also lost his opening match, dropping a 6-2 final to Ryan Aument (Selinsgrove). Down just 3-1 after two periods, the senior gave up three nearfall points with 38 seconds left. He shook off that loss with a 3-2 consi thriller. After giving up a takedown in the first period, the 195pounder escaped in the second period and scored a reversal with 34 seconds remaining to top Nikolas Miller (Central Mountain). In the consi round of 8,

Nine Solanco wrestlers received honors at the 2020 Lancaster-Lebanon League Wrestling Banquet: (from left), Weston Bare (113 lbs, Honorable Mention), Dominic Flatt (106, First Team AllStar; Academic All-Star), Nick Yannutz (195, First Team), Jarod Fulton (120, First Team), Nate Neuhauser (285, Honorable Mention; Academic All-Star), Ronnie Fulton (138, First Team; Academic All-Star), Joey Vandegriff (132, Academic All-Star), Jackson Houghton (126, First Team), and Steven Williams (145, Academic All-Star).

5-3 win. “It was a good weekend for us even without bringing home a medal,” he added. “Both guys wrestled hard and gave it their all. “We also took Weston Bare, a sophomore, as a workout partner for Dom,” Mendez continued. “He too learned a lot from the tournament and how the competition is so close and the seeds and rankings aren’t that important. So many matches are won and lost in close battles and everyone truly has a shot to do well if you believe you can win.

Yannutz, despite a 3-2 lead after two periods, dropped a tight 5-3 decision to Seth Hunsinger (Hazleton). He finished the season with a 33-13 record, bringing his career total to 91 wins with 57 career pins. “Nick wrestled a tough tournament,” said Mendez. “He was in every match by one or two points, but this is typical of the state tournament. Most matches are won or lost by a point or two. His win came in the last 30 seconds on a reversal. His last loss came in the last 11 seconds. It is wellmaintained and offers a level of safety that road riding does not, he said. As work on the trail continues in Eden Township and Bart Township, Pedal for Hope will have opportunities for expansion. Deb noted that Pedal for Hope will replace the Community Closet Thrift Store fashion show as a significant fundraiser, suggesting that it was time to do something different. The proceeds from the bicycle ride will be put toward the Hope Chest. “It’s (financial aid) for clients who can’t afford the full price of counseling,” Deb said. “We want to make sure (counseling) is available. The family ride will head east toward Quarryville and turn around just before the bridge that crosses Route 222. The longer ride will go west to Sigman Road before turning back. Volunteers will be stationed along the course and others will ride it to ensure that all participants are safe and their bicycles and tricycles are operational. “John (Girvin) has been a mastermind figuring this out,” praised New Hope executive director Deb Riddell. In his planning, Girvin has kept in mind the desired scope of the event. “If we had 150 to 200 people riding that day, that would be awesome,” Girvin remarked. A cost has been set for people age 13 and older to participate in Pedal for Hope. Children age 12 and under may ride free of charge. A family rate is available. Additionally, participants are encouraged to raise support from their churches, businesses, and friends, Deb said. participated in the donation. According to HVAC/R instructor Michael Arnt, the new boiler will allow students to train on the same type of equipment that they will see when they are out on the job. He added that supply costs

Students in the Lancaster County CTC’s HVAC/R program accepted a donation of an oil boiler from (front. from left) Brian Kiernan, territory manager of Pennsylvania, Virginia, and D.C., for Energy Kinetics; Mark Smith, Mid-Atlantic Region territory manager with Advanced Fuel Solutions Inc., North Andover, Mass.; and Scott Ansel of Meyer Oil Company, Cleona, president of the Southeast PA Chapter of OESP.
