Girls’ Lacrosse Teams To Host LAGLA Tournament By Dayna M. Reidenouer
For Doug Dalrymple, head coach of the Solanco Lacrosse Club’s girls’ teams, lacrosse is a lifestyle. “I love this sport; it’s a passion,” he remarked. Although Dalrymple did not play lacrosse as a youth, he quickly embraced the sport while stationed on the West Coast during his military service. His team included three All-Americans, so he was treated to high-caliber play. Dalrymple continued to be involved with lacrosse after he left the military and started a family. His children played lacrosse, and he still gets together with his former teammates to play about once a year. “In our family, we say we have to get our Vitamin L,” Dalrymple said with a smile. A decade ago, Dalrymple was tapped
by April Ennis-Pierson to coach the girls’ team of the newly formed Solanco Lacrosse Club. Since then, the club has grown, and interest in the sport has increased to the point that it would be a viable school sport, Dalrymple said. The club’s directors have had discussions with school board members about the possibility, and they are in the process of creating a formal request. “We would like to be a varsity sport in the PIAA. Adding lacrosse would give athletes another option,” Dalrymple said. “In the Lancaster-Lebanon League, 24 schools have spring sports, and 12 play lacrosse as a varsity sport. Of the other 12, only Solanco has a club. We are constantly searching for other teams to play.” Last year, the Solanco Lacrosse Club invited members of a private school league in eastern Pennsylvania to play See Girls’ Lacrosse pg 9

The Lancaster Barnstormers have donated four tickets and swag that will be auctioned along with passes for a pregame tour of the stadium and the opportunity to throw out the honorary first pitch at a game. Additionally, vacation stays in Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania will be up for bids. As befitting a library event, there will be some books offered as well. Brabson, Lee Child, Kathy Reichs, Maria V. Snyder, and Laura Bradford for the auction. Althoff noted that additional items will be accepted for the auction. The committee is looking for upscale items that will be of interest to the community. “This is our biggest fundraiser for the year,” Althoff said, adding that the library board hopes to bring in at least $13,000. “The point we stress at the auction is that you’re making a donation to the library and getting something in return.” Whatever the auction generates will be used to fund the continued operation of the Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. In addition to lending books, DVDs, games, and museum passes, the library also hosts programs for people of all ages and offers free access to computers and the internet. The C.X. Carlson Cultural Room serves both as a meeting room and as a space for art exhibits.
“I never realized how much the library was used until I came on the board,” Althoff commented. “A lot of people come in to use the computers and internet because they don’t have it at home.” The library operates with a small paid staff, so volunteers are greatly appreciated. Volunteers also help out at the auction. “ We have a lot of very good volunteers that make this possible,” Althoff said. Althoff noted that volunteers will prepare and sell food at the auction. In the morning, breakfast sandwiches, doughnuts, and coffee will be available, and later the menu will switch to soup, hot sandwiches, and cold beverages. For more information about the auction, including photos of auction items, readers may visit www.quarryvillelibrary.org. Anyone who would like to make a donation or volunteer to help may call the library at 717-786-1336.

For the second year in a row, the Solanco High School science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) team has won the Pennsylvania Governor’s STEM Challenge. Recently, the team members demonstrated their winning STEM project to Solanco school board directors and district administrators. In the Governor’s STEM Challenge, students were asked to solve a problem using STEM. Solanco students Patrick Hodgson, Tim Fetterman, Gabi Dolan, Jack Hertzler, and Jenna Brown created the Classroom Lockdown Assistance Device (CLAD) to provide additional, enhanced safety for students and teachers in the event of a school intruder. The CLAD they invented is a PVC cylinder that mounts above a classroom door. In the event of a school intruder emergency, the CLAD would release a curtain at the door to block the intruder’s view into the classroom. A teacher or student would not need to approach the door to pull down the curtain. The curtain is made of a synthetic fiber that is designed to deflect or fragment bullets fired into it. The CLAD also locks the door by removing the small magnet that teachers place on the door when needed to prevent the door from locking, and the CLAD provides additional reinforcement by cinching the door shut at the hinge typically found at the tops of doors in classrooms. School board members and students discussed the cost to build a CLAD - currently $370 and how possible modifications could be made to make them more affordable. They also discussed the creation of a single switch that would activate all CLADs throughout a school instead of individual switches in all classrooms, as well as other potential improvements. The team will advance to the state competition to be held in Harrisburg in April. Prior to this competition, the Solanco team is scheduled to participate in a “Shark Tank-type contest at Bloomsburg University where they will present, explain and promote the benefits of their CLAD to a panel of judges.
Classroom Lockdown Assistance Device (CLAD) they presented at the regional contest in the Pennsylvania Governor’s STEM Challenge. The team includes (from left) coach and Solanco teacher of the gifted Caley Roark and students Patrick Hodgson, Tim Fetterman, Gabi Dolan, (not pictured) Jack Hertzler and Jenna Brown.
The 34th annual Peace Creative Arts Contest is accepting submissions. The contest is open to all Lancaster County area middle and high school students in grades six through 12. This year’s topic is “Give Peace a Chance. Two categories are available - Fine Arts and Essay/Poetry. The deadline for submission is Friday, May 3. community groups and individuals to make donations or set up fundraising teams to help avert eviction and homelessness for single women with children in Chester and Lancaster counties. When Hoffer was appointed as leader of GSS 10 years ago, the organization had three houses and served approximately 15 men in emergency shelter and transitional housing in a year. Now, GSS serves more than 185 men, women and children every year, working across the spectrum of needs, from emergency shelter and transitional housing to long-term affordable housing and permanent housing,
with additional programs like matched savings, microfinance, mentoring and job training. To find out more about the campaign, to donate or to raise funds through the crowd-sourced site Everyday Hero, readers may visit www.goodsamservices.org/good -to-be-home.

Maintenance of the Enola Low Grade Trail includes installing new kiosks, keeping benches in good condition, and managing the plants that line the trail. The entire process is a learning experience, but the Trail Trot is not without precedent. “We have had two other organizations do runs on the trail that were pretty successful, Martinez said. The Trail Trot organizers hope that this event will also be successful, as proceeds will be used to maintain the trail and to host the township’s second annual National Night Out event, which will be held this year on Tuesday, Aug. 6. Organizers hope to build on the inaugural National Night Out event. “It was an amazing turnout, with 400 to 500 people attending, Martinez recalled. “We’re hoping to have just as many people, if not more, (at the next one). Martinez explained that the purpose of National Night Out is to build camaraderie among first responders and residents, promote Neighborhood Watch groups, and prevent crime and unlawful drug use. Providence Township’s National Night Out is open to residents of all municipalities in the Southern End. Last year’s event featured four fire companies, several police and sheriff departments, the

Trail Trot 5K/10K from pg 1 will start at 10:45 a.m. The award presentation will be held at the finish line at 11 a.m. The race will start and finish at the Groff trailhead parking lot, 301 E. State St., Quarryville. Providence Township zoning officer Heidi Martinez, who is organizing the race with township administrative assistant Chris Harnish, noted that they have not yet measured the 2.5-kilometer and 5-kilometer turning points on the trail, but those spots will be clearly marked on April 27. There will be water stations on the course and at the start/finish line. Benches at the trailhead and on the course will provide seating for spectators. Event sponsors will have booths offering a variety of information and activities at the trailhead as well. The trail is flat, with just a 1percent grade, and is primarily covered with crushed gravel. The access at the Groff trailhead is more rugged, which may pose a challenge for strollers, but strollers will be welcome on the course. Well-behaved pets on leashes will also be permitted. “We’re trying that to see how it goes, Martinez commented about the inclusion of pets.

Spectators are encouraged to watch the games on April 13 and cheer on the teams. Good sportsmanship by spectators and athletes is enforced. “Lacrosse is a game of honor. There’s no place for bad behavior, Dalrymple said. He noted that building a solid team involves working on interpersonal issues in addition to developing athletic skills. “It’s a great life lesson, groups of teams: third and fourth grades, fifth and sixth grades, and seventh and eighth grades, although younger players may play up. The Solanco high school-level girls’ team plays under exemption. “We play the very best seventh- and eighthgrade teams, and they take us to the cleaners, Dalrymple said. Although LAGLA does not report scores on games, a running tally is maintained, and creative challenges have been set for the older teams when they outpace their competitors by more than five goals. For the youngest group, an advantage is given to a team that is down by four goals.

The event will be held on Saturday, April 13, at the soccer fields of Solanco High School, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. The first game will begin at 8 a.m. Refreshments will be available for purchase. In the event of a cancellation due to rain, a notice will be posted at www.solanco lax.org. There will be five fields in use, with one divided for half-field games. In total, 29 matchups are slated. “That’s actually light, Dalrymple said. “Manheim Township is playing out of the area, so they won’t be here. LAGLA recognizes three
in Quarryville. In turn, the schools have invited the club to play on their home turfs, but the club cannot because of timing. If lacrosse were an official school sport, students could leave school in time to get to the start of games. Thankfully, the Lancaster Area Girls Lacrosse Association (LAGLA) has provided some competitive opportunities for Solanco girls for the past five years. Each week for five weeks during spring, a different school or facility hosts a tournament. This is the first year the Solanco Lacrosse Club has been able to host, filling in for Penn Manor.

Track Teams Battle Barons in Home Opener by Mona Steinhauer
Despite their youth and inexperience, Solanco’s track teams put forth a competitive effort last Wednesday, March 20, against the visiting Barons of Manheim Central. Unfortunately, when the final event concluded, it was the Barons that rose to the top. The boys’ squad, behind a two win effort from Colin Althoff, dropped a 101-49 result while the girls’ battled to a closer 84-66 defeat. “The boys’ have their talent balanced between the sophomores and juniors,” said 13 year head coach Ivan Haines. “We have a large group of juniors who were point getters last year. They will need to start where they finished last year and steadily improve. “Both squads are low in numbers so we are still looking for individuals to fill in the events,” he continued. “Both squads will be judging success on meeting individual goals and will need to gain experience and develop their talents.”
Althoff, a junior, won the 200 (23.2), the 400 (52.0) and anchored the winning 1600 relay with Dom Messano, Angel Daniel-Morales and Austin Wood. He was also third in the 100. Solanco’s only other win came at the hands of Nate Neuhauser. The junior earned the top mark in the shot put, 43-4.25, by almost four feet. He was also third in the discus behind Gabriel LaMonica (109-4), who earned a third in the javelin (131-4). In addition to running the relay, Messano took seconds in both the long (20-8) and triple (39-10.5) jumps with senior Mike Grech finishing third in both events. The Mules rounded out their field points with a second from Luke Slack in the high jump (5-4) and a third by Mike Carey in the pole vault. Back on the track, sophomore Ryan Vanover finished second in both the 200 (24.9) and 100 (11.4) meter sprints and Jose Serrano Silvia grabbed a second in the 800 (2:15.4). “To be successful this year we need
to fill several spots in the hurdles and distance events,” Haines stated. With no individual double winners, the girls’ team put forth a balanced effort against the Barons. Hannah Sweda and Aubry Roop earned come-from-behind finishes in the mile. Following Manheim’s Mallory Sunderland for the bulk of the race, Sweda and Roop picked it up over the final lap, going 1-2 with times of 6:05.9 and 6:10.5 respectively. Alana Yoder earned a first in the 200 (27.7) and anchored the 4x400 relay (Faith Roth, Jadan Forren and Olivia Lasko) with a strong kick to the finish. Forren also picked up a win in the open 400 (1:06.9) with Lasko (1:09.9) taking third. Also on the track, Elaina Kreider broke up Manheim’s distance runners with a second place finish in the 3200 (13:31) and Roth (13.4) and Charlotte Melot (14.1) went 2-3 in the 100. Roth was also third in the 200. The girls picked up three wins in the field with Greta Plechner, who was third in the 300 hurdles, clearing
4-6 in the high jump, Jenna Frey going 7-6 in the pole vault, and Nathaly Molinarez tossing the javelin 87-8. Senior Troyana Miller settled for seconds in the discus (91-2) and the shot (31-0.25) with Maddie Mosely taking third (28-5). Rounding out the scoring with third place efforts was Kerith Paine in the pole vault (7-0), Peyton Jennings in the javelin (72-0), Casey in the triple jump (27-4) and Melot in the long (12-9.5) and Sarah Snyder in the 800 (2:56.1). “Girls to watch include Faith Roth in the sprints, Aubree Roop in the distance events and Peyton Jennings in the throws,” said Haines. “We competed without several key athletes for various reasons,” the coach added. “Our young athletes performed well and with every meet should improve and gain needed experience.” SOFTBALL With just four returning starters on the field, and just two in the positions they played last year, Solanco struggled against visiting Elizabethtown last Wednesday, March 27. And, instead of what has historically been a dogfight, the Bears cruised to a very
lopsided, 13-2, five-inning victory. “We have three freshmen and two first-year senior starters on defense,” stated head coach Brett Miller. “And some of them are playing positions they are not geared for. We were very generous in giving more than three outs an inning. We just need more experience and confidence…one practice and one game at a time.” The most notable change in the lineup was the absence of ace Hanna Phillips in the circle. The senior is recovering from an off-season injury and is currently limited to hitting. Stepping in was last year’s third baseman Sierra Dean. “Sierra pitched well enough for us to be competitive,” Miller stated. “We had six errors behind her, giving them six more batters. E-town maybe had three earned runs.” The Bears jumped in front for good with a five run second inning. Solanco, held to just three hits (two from Dean), got on board in the bottom of the third, compliments of Dean’s two-run double. The visitors took advantage of those Solanco miscues and picked up three runs in the fourth and batted around for five runs in the fifth to end the game early.
The last time the Mares suffered a 10-run loss goes way back. “Probably in 2007, when Amber Greenleaf was pitching,” Miller recalled. “But that’s the same year we came back and placed in districts. “We have to keep developing and progressing,” he added. “The league waits for no one.” In a game they were predicted to win, Solanco bounced back with a three-inning 28-2 result over a struggling Lebanon squad. “You have to make sure you win the games you’re expected to win,” Miller said. The Mares pounded out 15 hits and scored double figures in each of the first two innings, plating 11 runs in the first and 17 in the second to determine the outcome. Jade Eshleman led the hit parade with two home runs, a triple and nine RBI. Following Eshleman in the lineup and batting cleanup, Dean cracked a pair of homers and pushed in three runs. Matching Dean in the RBI department was Phillips who also stroked a home run along with a double and a base hit. Skyla Townsley, with three base hits, and Kara McClune, who walked three times, were both credited with four runs batted in.

ADVERTISER - Solanco Edition BASEBALL With ten seniors on the squad, head coach Tom Fish anticipates the Mules to improve on last year’s 8-12 record. “Many of these players have been varsity starters since their sophomore year,” Fish noted. “We have been working toward this season for a while. The guys have worked hard and are 100% invested.” The Mules opened the season with two games last week, coming away with a pair of convincing wins, combining for 20 hits, and playing flawless defense.
At Elizabethtown last Wednesday, Solanco scored in five of the seven innings, including four in both the second and fourth innings, en route to a dominating 12-1 result. Hunter Shaw came away with the big hits of the day, a two run single in the second inning and an RBI double in the fourth. “Playing at E-town has given us fits over the years,” said Fish. “Hunter came up big. Both of his hits were with two outs.” Other multiple hitters included Joel McGuire, John Murray, Mike May and Sam Buckwalter.
the game early. “Corey Stively was the story on the mound,” Fish stated. “In five innings he had just one walk, one hit allowed and struck out six. He was in control and fun to watch.” At the plate, the Mules collected just six hits, but two of them left the yard. Mike May hit not one, but two home runs to fuel the attack. “He hit a solo shot to get us on the board in the second inning and then hit a two run homer in our seven run fifth,” Fish recalled. “Both were hit
On the hill, Hayden Fox got the start and pitched five solid innings, striking out five, walking three and giving up three hits. “Hayden set the tone with four dominant innings to get us started and get our hot bats up to the plate,” said Fish. “We beat a returning senior all-star pitcher that got the better of us twice last year.” At home on Friday the Mules found themselves in a tight one against Lebanon. Clinging to a 3-0 lead after four complete innings, Solanco exploded for a seven run fifth to end

errors,” he continued. “Knock on wood! We’ve made all the plays and had a great week on offense and on the mound. Now it gets a tough with an improved CV squad, Ephrata and L-S up next.

PUBLIC REAL ESTATE AUCTION
Solanco High School students recently visited Quarryville Elementary School, where they buddied up with fourth-graders to help them conduct a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) experiment that related to the fourth-graders’ environment/ecology unit. Teacher Lauren Dupler noted that the students learned about groundwater infiltration and were tasked with crafting a filter that used earth materials to purify dirty water. There was also a discussion about how people in some countries do not have access to clean drinking water. Students used electronic tablets and laptops to research current inventions that are used around the world to help with this problem. They then worked in teams to sketch their own designs for their own invention.
