hen Sgt. Samantha Minnucci became the director of Camp Cadet of Chester County in 2014, her youngest brother, Gabriel Minnucci, was eager to help her set up for the event. After Camp Cadet ended, Gabriel couldn’t stop asking his sister about the program and noting how he wanted to enroll in the camp one day. However, Samantha knew that wouldn’t be possible because Gabriel has special needs and is over the age limit. As a result, she decided to create a program so that her brother could learn about the law enforcement agencies that serve the local community. “Gabriel has an amazing personality and lights up any room when he walks into it,” said Samantha. “He has the biggest heart and has always been my No. 1 fan in my career choice.” Founded in 2016, Sunny Day Camp is a one-day event where individuals of all ages with special

On Friday, June 10, Conestoga resident Martha MacAdam will rappel from the side of the Holiday Inn, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster. MacAdam has been a member of the Rotary Club of Lancaster South for about 15 years now, and this will be the second year in a row that she has volunteered for VisionCorps’ EyeDrop event on behalf of the Rotary Club. See EyeDrop pg 5

One of the items up for bids will be a handmade quilt created by a volunteer using the handprints of students who attend Solid Rock.

In March, Solid Rock Youth Ministries hosted an open house to celebrate its 25th anniversary of serving the Quarryville community. People were able to drop in, meet the team, see the space, and learn about Solid Rock’s mission, which is to earn trust through authentic mentoring relationships with kids in kindergarten through 12th grade so lives can be changed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. To accomplish this mission, Solid Rock offers several activities throughout the

year, including after-school programs, art and drama programs, family fun events, and more. As Solid Rock continues to celebrate its anniversary, the board and staff have decided to reorganize its schedule of annual fundraising events. This year, the farm-to-table event will take place in late July, the 5K and Fun Run is planned for early October, and the auction and dinner has been moved from the fall to the spring. Solid Rock has been hosting the annual auction and dinner since 2003, but the event has not been held in person since 2019 due to the See Solid Rock Auction pg 2

COVID-19 pandemic. The event was modified and moved to an online format in 2020 and 2021; however, this year, it will look a lot like it did pre-pandemic. Solid Rock’s annual auction and dinner will take place on Tuesday, April 26, at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. The doors will open and the silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. Dinner, which will consist of ham, a baked potato, green beans, coleslaw, a roll, and dessert, will be served at 6 p.m. Following dinner and the silent auction, a short video will be shown to celebrate Solid Rock’s anniversary, and then a live auction will begin at 7:10 p.m. “Just being back in person is really exciting,” stated executive director Raeanne Nixon. “Our events feel like a real big family reunion. I’m looking forward to coming back together, sharing what God is doing, and celebrating the 25-year anniversary of Solid Rock.” Items up for bids will include a two-person kayak, furniture, gift baskets, baked goods, homemade items, a Milwaukee drill set, and electronics. There will also be a handmade quilt created by a volunteer using the handprints of students who attend Solid Rock. “There’s always an excitement in the air with being able to bid live,” noted Dana Nixon, who helps plan the event.

Federal Funds Allotted For Watershed Restoration

Landowners and farmers are among the parties implementing the Pequea Creek Watershed restoration plan.

Two watershed restoration plans coordinated by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) in Pennsylvania will receive over $3 million in direct federal funding in the fiscal year 2022 omnibus spending package signed recently by President Biden. One of these is the Pequea Creek Watershed restoration plan in Lancaster and Chester counties, for which Sens. Bob Casey and

Ben Cardin requested $2.18 million. It was the first time in a decade that senators were able to request funds for specific projects in annual appropriations bills. The Pequea Creek watershed feeds into the Chesapeake Bay. Partners developing and implementing the two plans with CBF include county conservation districts, local watershed and conservation

organizations, academic institutions, state and local government agencies, local businesses, planning agencies, landowners, farmers, and residents. Within the 150-squaremile Pequea Creek Watershed, the federal investment will support practices that keep soils and nutrients on the land instead of in the water with such practices as cover crops, no-till agriculture, nutrient management, animal waste management, riparian buffers, streambank fencing, streambank stabilization, and reducing legacy sediment. Originating in a small portion of western Chester County, the Pequea watershed extends through the heart of Lancaster County. Planned changes are also intended to help meet the

nutrient and sediment reduction goals set forth in the Countywide Action Plan in Lancaster County, noted Brian Gish, the CBF watershed coordinator who drafted the Pequea plan. The Pequea Creek restoration plan was approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and is awaiting final Environmental Protection Agency approval; once approved by both organizations, its implementation will be eligible for federal funding through Section 319 of the Clean Water Act. Gish is now working with others on new watershed restoration plans for Marsh Creek in Centre County and the Upper Conestoga in Lancaster, Berks, and Chester counties.

EyeDrop from pg 1 Located at 244 N. Queen St., Suite 301, Lancaster, VisionCorps is a nonprofit organization that provides individuals who are blind or visually impaired with preventative, rehabilitative, and employment opportunities. The organization also helps low-income families receive free eye exams, basic frames, and contact lenses. Funding from the community is what allows VisionCorps to continue offering these services, which is why the organization will host another EyeDrop event this summer. Through EyeDrop, individuals can rappel down the side of the Holiday Inn building in exchange for fundraising a minimum amount for VisionCorps. Those who participate on behalf of a nonprofit, like MacAdam, can raise money for VisionCorps and their own organization. In order to rappel at the event, MacAdam needs to raise a minimum of $1,500 for VisionCorps, but if MacAdam surpasses the minimum contribution amount, then that additional money will benefit the Rotary Club. Last year, she raised nearly $4,000. “It’s a terrific initial cause,”

said MacAdam. “What VisionCorps does is important to the people who use their services, and it’s a much-needed service. The fact that there’s an opportunity for the Rotary Club to benefit is another win for the community because whatever comes back to us, we turn out the door.” Chartered on June 20, 1987, with 35 members, the Rotary Club of Lancaster South is one of more than 35,000 Rotary Clubs scattered across the globe. The mission of Rotary Clubs is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, good will, and peace through the fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. Funds raised for the Rotary Club through VisionCorps’ Eye-

Drop event will go toward the club’s philanthropic work in the community, such as providing scholarships to students who graduate from Lampeter-Strasburg, Solanco, and Penn Manor high schools. “Martha has really done a great job for the Rotary Club,” said Patrick Roberts, secretary of the Rotary Club of Lancaster South.“She has a lot of energy, and she always steps up to the plate. The more funds we raise, the more we can give back to the community, and we cover a big area.” MacAdam’s fundraising deadline is the day of the event, and VisionCorps’ goal is to reach $175,000. After a few years of living with COVID-19 restrictions, which offered little or no chance for people to dress up and go out, Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone has announced its 12th annual Ladies’ Tea and Auction. This year’s high tea will include all the traditional activities associated with the event, such as food, prizes, and a live auction. “It’s a very fancy, feminine event,” said Jennie Straub, director at Cornerstone. “It’s nice to get dressed up.” “The ladies (who attend) get to dress up and wear hats,” said Kathy Greig, director of business affairs for Cornerstone, who explained that table hostesses are needed for six more tables. A table hostess decorates and hosts her table and invites eight to 12 guests. See Time For Tea pg 7

Beth Mellinger (left), Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone Ladies’ Tea Committee member, and her daughter, Megan Nolt, are looking forward to this year’s fundraiser.

Jimmy Hartigan was third. Riley Ford earned a second in the 200 and was third in the 100 and McDowell picked up thirds in both the 110 and 300 hurdles. Anthony Solis-Morales also placed in two events with thirds in the mile and 800 meter runs. Katie Urbine continued her mastery of the pole vault with a first-place jump of ten feet and added a 17-foot-long jump for another win. She also ran the first leg of the come-from-behind 4x100 relay with Olianna Oravitz, Paige Althoff, and Emma Housekeeper rounding out the win and then finished ahead of Housekeeper in the 100 for second place. Housekeeper also grabbed a second in the 200 with Oravitz a half step behind. Senior Hannah Wood highlighted the field events with top throws in the shot (31-11) and javelin (91) while picking up a second in the discus (84). Solanco’s final win went to Daria Neaves with a 13:32 in the 3200 with Olivia Singleton taking second. Third place finishers included Emma Baxter (1600), Groff (400), Halle Brown (300 hurdles), Oravitz (long jump), Jordyn Ream (shot put) and Marissa Cannizarro (javelin). BASEBALL In back-to-back outings last week, the baseball team watched a 5-1 lead slip away and suffered a 7-5 loss at Muhlenberg Tuesday and then opened league play one day later with a 15-1, fiveinning win over Lebanon. “Nine of our 12 hits were from our first four batters,” said head coach John Girvin. “I was pleased with the hitting, but we left a number of runners on base and committed six errors. “We’re a young squad and Muhlenberg made it to states

last year,” he added. Austin Wenger and Nate Harnish each had three hits, Tyler Burger added two and Brayden Herr rounded out the top four hitters in the lineup with one hit. “Brayden got his first varsity start and deserved better fate,” Girvin said. “They tied it in the bottom of the fourth on three hits and a costly error. And then scored two in the sixth.” On Wednesday, the Cedars jumped in front with a single run in the first inning, but Solanco took control after that, working back-to-back seven run innings and adding a single run in the fourth to account for the scoring. Austin Wenger went 2-for4 with a triple and scored two runs. He pushed in three RBI’s while Dilon Dean was 2for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI’s. Kody Moyer also knocked in three runs with a double. “We faced their best pitcher, who probably throws harder than anyone in the league, and we scored 15 runs on eight hits,” said Girvin. “We took advantage of seven walks and four hit batters, but we got the hits when we needed them. And we played good defense today.” Burger struck out five, walked one and gave up four hits and one unearned run in four innings. Sawyer Weyman gave up one hit and struck out two in the fifth. Lebanon and came home with an 18-0, three inning victory. The Mares scored all their runs on ten hits in the first inning. Becca Foulk’s two-run homer was the big hit of the inning. Holly Grube added three RBI’s and a clutch triple while Anna Sexton and Kendal Janssen each finished with two RBI’s. Sexton pitched the victory with eight strikeouts. With five seniors and three underclassmen back this season, head coach Brett Miller is anticipating all five to contribute. “We have the potential to be competitive,” Miller said. “I am cautiously optimistic.” Solanco returns Marlee Haupt (first, pitcher) and Foulk, a returning all-star, moves in to catch, filling Jade Eshleman’s (now at Lancaster Bible College) spot. Taryn Brittigan is back at second base, and Kendal Janssen (center) and Alyssa Schlagnhaufer (left) return to the outfield.

“I look for the seniors to be consistent,” said Miller. Returning underclassmen include sophomores Emily Sims, shortstop and leadoff hitter last year, and Grube, third baseman who can also pitch. Sexton, a junior, will handle the mound and can also play first base. Sophomore Josie Jansen will fill in at right field and freshman Sara Defrancesco, who swings with command, will also contribute. “Josie is just as fast as Taryn and improves every practice,” said Miller. “Sara is pretty versatile, but I feel her strength for us right now is her bat. We will also use Brooke Jennings as a courtesy runner. She has a lot of speed. We have more speed this year than I am accustomed to.” Solanco, after a pair of must-win games, lost to Elizabethtown in the first round of districts last year.
