Solanco Student Advances In MathCON For the third year in a row, a Solanco elementary student has qualified for the national finals of MathCON. Kieran Groff, a fifthgrader at Clermont Elementary, scored 204 out of a possible 300 points in a recent MathCON competition. This places Groff in the 92nd percentile of students who took the exam and earned him an opportunity to compete in the upcoming MathCON National Finals. In addition, Providence Elementary’s Chloe Gill, also in fifth grade, scored 194 out of 300 points, placing her in the 85th percentile and qualifying her as an alternate for the Members of MOPC continue to serve in Tamshiyacu, Peru.
MOPC To Host Yard Sale For Peru Mission 2021 marks the 15th year that the congregation of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, has partnered with its sister church in Tamshiyacu, a village along the Amazon River in northeast Peru. MOPC has a small congregation involved in local, national, and international missions. Typically, a team of volunteers travels to Peru each summer to provide physical and spiritual support to the pastor and his congregation; however, 2020 was different. Due to travel restrictions, MOPC sent funds, medical supplies, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to the nursing staff and medical facilities in Iquitos, the major Peruvian city where past mission teams have stayed during their journeys to and from Tamshiyacu. “No one made it to Peru last year,” noted Daniel Henry, MOPC mission team leader. “The airport which we land at in the Amazon was closed most if not all of last summer.”
MOPC began its Peru mission in 2006 in conjunction with Daniel’s brother, Dave Henry, who serves as the pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson City, Mo. Together, the two churches raised funds to build a sister church in Tamshiyacu in 2008. Church members from both Pennsylvania and Missouri travel to Peru every year and stay for one to two weeks.
“We strive to share the Gospel and the love of Jesus to the folks in this region of the Amazon.” While there, they lead Bible school and work on construction projects at the church and within the village. “We strive to share the Gospel and the love of Jesus to the folks in this region of the Amazon,” said Daniel. Over the years, the mission teams have completed several projects in Peru, such as doing maintenance on the church, building a playground for special needs children, installing a running water system for the
church, and supplying malaria nets and parasite medicines. To raise funds for its Peru mission, MOPC held its annual Nuts ‘N’ Bolts consignment sale on Jan. 9. MOPC will host a yard sale on Saturday, April 17, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. to continue fundraising for its Peru mission. The event will be indoors, and there will be over 30 tables of items for sale, including toys, household items, tools, small appliances, clothes, and much more. Food will also be available for purchase. “We have been holding the annual yard sale for over 25 years,” said Daniel. “We invite folks to donate items or they can rent their own outside space.” MOPC will celebrate its 300th anniversary in 2027. Currently, the church has over 100 active members with attendance averaging about 50. MOPC holds in-person worship services every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. “We practice social distancing and recommend masks,” said Daniel. “All has gone well.” For more information about the yard sale, including to rent a space, call MOPC at 717-786-3402 or Daniel at 717-381-9947.

national finals. “We are extremely proud of these two students and wish them the best of luck as they prepare for the national finals,” said Ryan Humphries, Solanco elementary teacher. MathCON is an online mathematics competition that puts students’ math skills to the test as they compete in a grade-level contest against math students from around the country. The first round is an online test, comprised of multiple-choice questions that require students to take the knowledge they have gathered from their current mathematics class and apply it to problems using their own ingenuity and insight. The next step for qualifying students is to complete a final assessment against other top U.S. elementary math students in early May. Chloe Gill

Connie Dienner, founder of Cavod Academy of the Arts in New Holland, has spent the last 20 years establishing a godly environment where students can create with purpose. the event will feature a variety of entertainment, including live and prerecorded singing and dancing performances, spoken word poetry, and a visit from the Cavod Ensemble. Among the many entertaining presentations, Dienner was especially excited about a segment where DePaul will question young Cavod students in a feature reminiscent of Art Linkletter. “ We are filming Vinnie asking children from Cavod what they like about Cavod,” said Dienner. Keller will auction several experience packages during the event, and viewers will be able to bid online or by smartphone. While Dienner noted that most of the items will be surprises, she shared that Darla’s Hair Care and Spa in Intercourse has donated a day in the salon that will include pedicures, manicures, and massages. A silent auction will open online at https://cavod.org on Monday, May 3, and remain open through Sunday, May 9. Dienner said that organizers have set a goal of offering 50 See Cavod pg 3

Zooks Homemade Chicken Pies Celebrates Grand Opening! Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies was founded by Amos and Rachel Zook back in 2001. They sold the business to Lee & Rose Anna King (daughter and son-in-law) in 2007 and it has now moved from Harvest Drive to a new location at 3427 Lincoln Hwy East, Paradise, PA 17562. This building had been known as the National Christmas Center for the last 20 years and originally was a restaurant known as The Dutch Town & Country Inn. Today the renovated building offers ample and much needed space to enable Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies to keep up with production of their delicious pies that make a great home cooked meal that anyone can appreciate. On April 15, 16 & 17 the public is invited to a Grand Opening celebration of Dutch Town & Country Market, the retail side of Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies, where you will find not only Zook’s Pies but also Local milk, ice cream, jarred goods, bakery items and other specialty foods. There will be the opportunity to register to win prizes and product samples to taste and enjoy. The retail store hours are 8 am to 5 pm weekdays and Saturdays 8 am to 4 pm.

Another goal the organization has set for the gala is to have 50 watch parties happening around the county during the event. To encourage watch parties, organizers have set up a special delivery for those who contact Cavod for their complimentary access. “(Watch party hosts) will have a charcuterie board, a bottle of wine, and flowers delivered to their home by a Cavod student in a costume,” shared Dienner. “ We will drop everything you need at your door so you can sit with your family and watch or have it on your deck with your friends.” The link to the event will be available through the Cavod website and by searching for “Cavod Academy of the Arts” on Facebook. Dienner encouraged those who wish to hold watch parties to email connie@cavod.org or call 717989-3436.

“I fell in love with running in 2015; it really changed my life,” said Atticks. “I feel like I’ve been given an opportunity to use my passion to help and support others.” Atticks became coordinator after she assisted a friend with organizing the series in the spring of 2017. When her friend asked if Atticks would like to take over as coordinator in the fall, Atticks felt as if it was something she was supposed to do. “I have four children, and my three girls have been a tremendous help ever since I took over the series,” noted Atticks. “They do the warmups, the timing … it’s been a family affair.” Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the series was postponed in 2020. This year, however, families are able to come back and participate. “I’ve been trying to build up the series for families in Lancaster County because I feel

as though we’ve been so disconnected during the pandemic,” said Atticks. “I really just want people to come out, meet their neighbors, and encourage their kids.” Throughout the series, runners earn points and those with the most points earn trophies, but all participants receive medals. Each season, the coordinator selects one runner as the recipient of the Healthy Kids Award. “This award is for someone who embodies the whole idea of being a healthy kid,” explained Atticks. “During my first season, I gave the award to an inspiring boy with autism who just gripped my heart. He showed up every week, ran his race, and never gave up.” At the end of the series, parents have the opportunity to participate in a mile run while their children watch. “I promote this because it’s a way for us to show our kids how much they inspire us,” noted Atticks. “Our kids come out every week and do their best. Let’s show them what their effort does for us.” To sponsor the Healthy Kids Running Series, visit https://healthykidsrunning series.org and search for the local series. Harnish pitched the last two innings in relief. “After a shaky sixth inning, where Lebanon scored three runs and cut the lead to 5-3, Seth settled down with three strikeouts and one walk in the seventh,” Fish pointed out. admin@blessingsofhope.com or call 717-824-1227. Organizers described the May 29 event as a cross between a fair and a mud sale. Both 5K and 10K runs will be held beginning at 8 a.m., and a volleyball tournament will take place during the day. More information on registering for these competitions may be found at www.blessings ofhope.com. Four different auctions will take place during the day, and food items will be available for purchase for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with a drive-through food option. In the evening, a by-donation concert will be held. Blessings of Hope was started in 2006, when Lapp and Fisher began using a garage in Farmersville to store and redistribute food that was being wasted and that they knew could be used to feed people in Lancaster County and beyond. Eventually, the ministry developed relationships with more than 80 food producers and began acting as a bank to collect and redistribute food to pantries, outreaches, halfway houses, and ministries, along with Hands of Hope food box distributions.
over the next two weeks, 12 tractor-trailer loads of food boxes containing fruit, vegetables, milk, yogurt, and other food items, along with skids of water, traveled from Leola to Texas. Fisher remained in the Lone Star State to oversee distribution. “Food and water was what they needed,” recalled Fisher, who added that trailers went to Houston and Austin as well. “They had no electric or water, so water was in high demand.” Outreaches like shipping 294,600 pounds of food to Texas are made possible by fundraisers like the iCare event BOH has planned for Friday, May 28, and Saturday, May 29, at 1850 Diamond Station Road, Ephrata. The outdoor event will begin at 5:30 p.m. on May 28 and at 6:30 a.m. on May 29. The May 28 fundraiser, which will be designed to appeal to members of the Plain community, will include an a capella concert, a banquet, and guest speaker Daniel Beiler, who spent two years in Iraq working with refugees and local government officials. To become an iCare sponsor or purchase tickets, which are necessary to attend the May 28 event, email

More Than Cool: A Town For All Seasons
The borough of Lititz, located directly north of Lancaster city, is a town still heavily influenced by the Moravian colony that once stood in its center. The community was founded in 1753 on nearly 500 acres that John George Klein, one of the area’s first residents, donated to Count Nicholas Ludwig Von Zinzendorf, a Moravian preacher. The town has carefully worked the architecture of the Moravian Church, located at 8 Church Square, into newer buildings and successfully combined the past with quaint shops and attractive dining venues. The efforts helped earn Lititz the title of “America’s Coolest Small Town” back in 2013. But “cool” is perhaps too ephemeral a term to describe Lititz. With traditional enterprises such as Wilbur Chocolate, which still operates a retail store on Broad Street; the Lititz Springs Inn and Spa, built in 1764 as the Zum Anker; and the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, which is believed to be the oldest in the country, Lititz has much to offer visitors. Outdoor pursuits include a visit to Lititz Springs Park, a seven-acre plot featuring a band shell and recreation areas surrounding a picturesque stream. The park is also the location of the town welcome center, an 1884 Victorian Gothic building designed by Frank Furness, where volunteers provide information about activities
Quarryville Library Center, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, will hold a chicken barbecue, plant sale and book sale on Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will take place rain or shine. The cost of a meal includes a barbecued halfchicken, Herr’s potato chips and a bottle of water. The chicken will be cooked by members of Wakefield Lions Club who have over 30 years of experience with this task.
In cold weather or warm, the town of Lititz has much to offer to visitors - beautiful surroundings, quaint shops, and interesting cuisine that combine to make Lititz a lovely place to spend a day.
and restaurants in Lititz. The Warwick-to-Ephrata Rail Trail offers 8 miles to walk, run, or bike from its start at Oak Street to Ephrata. Bicycle rental is available at the Warwick Township Building. At the Wolf Sanctuary of PA, located in the Speedwell Forge area of Lititz, visitors may enjoy a unique chance to see wolf pack dynamics. The restored Johannes Mueller House and the Lititz Historical Foundation Museum are generally open from the end of May through December, offering guided tours that tell the story of the Moravians and how the town was founded. The wooden
portion of the Mueller house was built by Klein in 1740, making it the oldest standing private home in Lititz. It was also the location of the Lititz post office from 1830 to 1849. The historical foundation hands out free historic walking tour maps of Main Street, which take visitors to about 18 buildings. Located directly behind the foundation are the Mary Oehme Gardens. The gardens, which are free to visit and open to the public as long as no events are happening there, are a tranquil area full of bright colors against a green backdrop.
