Yard Sale Will Support Peruvian Mission Chess Club Engages Young Players By Dayna M. Reidenouer

By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

When Dan Henry’s brother, Dave, spoke at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC) earlier this year, he stressed the importance of setting aside preconceived ideas when aiming to help people from other cultures. “We don’t want to do things our way,” Dan said. “It is better to follow their directions.” Dan related that Dave, who is a Presbyterian pastor in Jefferson City, Mo., and the leader of annual trips to a sister church in Tamshiyacu, Peru, explained that point by using the example of a painting project in Peru. “The project lead dumped paint thinner into the paint bucket, and then he dumped in more. We asked why, and he said the paint had to be thinned or it would never dry in the high humidity. If it had been up to us, we would have just started painting,” Dan reported See Yard Sale pg 3

Dave as sharing. “Can you imagine kids running around and bumping into walls covered with wet paint? Dan and his wife, Boni, began visiting the Presbyterian church in Tamshiyacu in 2006. Sometimes teams of a dozen or more people from MOPC have traveled there, and other times, it has been only Dan and Boni. No matter the size, the group typically joins with Dave’s parishioners and other folks he has recruited. Dan noted that when he and Boni first started going to the remote jungle village of Tamshiyacu, they were happy to help with construction projects. Age, however, has slowed them down, but that has actually been a blessing that has turned the traditional missions trip model on its head. “The team does pay some people to help (with construction). In some ways, we help them more by hiring local men to do the work, Dan said. “We buy materials locally too. By buying in the village, it helps them out. On earlier trips, MOPC members collected flip-flops and other items to distribute to people in need in Tamshiyacu, but they have since opted to purchase those items in the village, benefiting the local economy. Additionally, the teams buy anti-parasite medication in a Peruvian city for distribution to residents in and around Tamshiyacu. Along with meeting folks’ physical needs, the mission teams have aimed to meet spiritual needs as well. Dave has mentored the church’s pastors, and typically, the groups host Bible schools for children during their visits. “We usually start with about 50 children, but by the end of the week, it’s popular, and we have several hundred. It’s organized chaos, but they love it, Dan said. The next trip to Tamshiyacu is set for Friday, July 5, to Saturday, July 13. Dan and Boni will be traveling with a group from

a 1-to-6 ratio,” Wood said. “Our curriculum is totally individualized because everyone is at a different level. We don’t play to win; we play to learn.” The club is affiliated with the United States Chess Federation, and Wood is a national coach and a tournament director. Using these connections, the club provides members with competition opportunities. “We go to the state finals every year, and we go to Florida every year for the nationals,” Wood said. “We can (get novices started), and we also have people here who are state champions and national champions.” This year, Wood reports, the club placed second in the state competition in three of the five divisions offered. Parents who bring their children to the meetings are welcome to play as well, but the system is set up as a closed club for security, so there are no strangers playing with the children. Both of Kristin Weire’s sons are members of the club. “My sons had a lot of interest in chess. We were trying to find something in the area where they could come and play more regularly. Online we found Wood Chess,” she said. “They look forward to it each week.” Members pay a nominal fee to cover supplies and equipment. A scholarship fund is available to assist students if needed. Chess Club from pg 1 Retired teacher Mark Wood of Manheim is the organizer of the club along with Joe Weber of Leola. “I have eight different clubs in central Pennsylvania. Three of those are in Lancaster County,” Wood said. “We didn’t have anything in Quarryville or down this way. We have one in Lancaster, (and) people were driving all the way there.” Wood and Weber also have set up a number of chess clubs in schools and senior centers. They have had booths at local fairs, where they introduce chess to interested players. Lampeter-Strasburg School District eighth-grade student Tommy Phipps learned to play chess last summer; he found Wood Chess at the West Lampeter Community Fair. “I enjoy the people, and I like the strategy,” he said. Several of the club members were introduced to the organization through a chess club at Resurrection Catholic School in Lancaster. One of those is Edwin Deutler, who has been with the club for the past three years. Now in seventh grade, he has been playing chess for more than six years. “I like the strategy and thinking that it requires behind it. You have to think your way through. You learn from it,” Deutler said. The group offers more than opportunities to play one-on-one. Wood and Weber actively provide instruction for the players. “We try to keep

Freedom Life invites parents to bring their children to a helicopter candy drop on Saturday, April 20, at 10 a.m. The event will be hosted simultaneously in three different locations, including SECA Park, 299 Park Ave., Quarryville; Minch Park, 400 West St., Parkesburg; and East Fallowfield Township Community Park, 900 Buck Run Road, East Fallowfield. Teams from Freedom Life will coordinate check-in to distribute bags and party favors to children age 12 and under, as well as prepare for the candy scramble. Before the helicopter arrives at each site, candy will be evenly distributed across a designated area, which will be roped off from the public. Once the helicopter flies overhead and drops another sack of sweet treats, children will be given permission to fill their bags. The candy drop at East Fallowfield

technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) focus system-wide. On the elementary level, MakerSpaces are part of ND and will be part of the LG campus curricula in the 2019-20 academic year. MakerSpaces provide students the opportunity to solve real-world problems with 21st-century skills, demonstrating critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. LMMS offers a project-based learning (PBL) curriculum model that also engages seventh- and eighth-graders with four core themes each year. Again, this model is designed to solve current-day issues with a 21st-century skill set. The PBL model is in its fourth year of operation and is meant to allow students to transition into LMH with a new mindset on how to approach more advanced high school material and thrive in the real world.

More than four years ago, Lancaster Mennonite (LM) School and Hershey Christian School entered into negotiations and a planning process for LM to acquire Hershey Christian. The enrollment at the Hershey campus of LM has been tenuous since the acquisition. After four years of operation, the LM board of directors, finance committee and administration unanimously agreed that sustainability of the Hershey campus of LM is no longer viable due to enrollment decline. LM has experienced enrollment decline for more than 10 years and is in the process of creating a sustainable financial model for the future. LM will be transitioning two campuses. Kraybill will operate independently as of Monday, July 1, and Hershey will close at the end of the 2018-19 school year. LM will also reduce staff at other campuses. This consolidation effort reduces the amount of square footage maintained compared to student enrollment numbers. The model for the future includes an endowment that creates a foundation for New Danville (ND), Locust Grove (LG), Lancaster Mennonite Middle School (LMMS), and Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMH). The current cash endowment is $9 million, with an additional $3 million in non-school properties. Endowment reserves remain strong and in place, preserving ND, LG, LMMS, and LMH campuses. Each campus is moving toward a stronger independent financial health position, yet remaining part of the larger LM system. LM is implementing a science,

Solanco Baseball Tops CV For 3rd Straight Win by Mona Steinhauer

The baseball team opened last week with a solid 8-2 win at Conestoga Valley on Monday, securing their third straight win. That streak, however, came to a close with Wednesday’s 4-1 loss to Ephrata. On a cold and wet Friday, the Mules hosted undefeated Lampeter-Strasburg but that game was suspended due to the weather and will finish this week with Solanco facing a 4-0 deficit. “The win over CV put us at 3-0 to start the year,” noted head coach

Tom Fish. “The key to the game was our base running. We stole nine bags on the day, including three by Sam Buckwalter. Sam was also 2-2 at the plate with one RBI, one run scored and two walks.” After a scoreless first inning, Solanco got on board when Mike May collected his third home run in two games. He finished with three hits on the day. Solanco gained some breathing room with a three-run third thanks to RBI singles by Buckwalter, Joel McGuire and John Murray. Down 4-0, CV got on board with a

solo run in the bottom of the third but Solanco plated two in the fifth and two more runs in the seventh to pull away. “Zack Fritz, our catcher, was 1-3 but drove in our final three runs of the game with a sac fly in the fifth and a two run single in the seventh,”

start,” he added. “We have shown flashes of the team I think we are. The boys are excited to take on our next challenges.” This week the Mules face Section One power Warwick, finish the L-S game and take on McCaskey and Penn Manor on the road. TRACK Missing key athletes for the second meet of the season, the Solanco track teams had a tough challenge in Lampeter last Monday but they put their best foot forward. Unfortunately the Pioneers had more depth and experience and pulled away. Solanco won four events on the day and Alana Yoder won two and anchored the third. The junior highlighted the sprints with a 13.2 in the 100, edging Lampeter’s Symanski (13.3) and a 27.1 in the 200, holding off Strauss (27.3). She also anchored the winning 4x400 relay team with Faith Roth, Jadan Forren and Jenna Brown turning in a 4:28.9. “That was the first time Alana ran the 100,” head coach Ivan Haines pointed out. “And she earned a personal best in the 200.” Brown (68.0) and Forren (68.5) were coming off a 2-3 finish in the 400. The Mares also picked up a win in the field when Maddie Mosley tossed the shot put 29-1. Teammate Peyton

Fish recalled. Sophomore Seth Harnish chipped in with a 3-4 day with three singles. On the hill, Corey Stively got his second consecutive start, allowing just one run, striking out six and walking to over five innings. “Corey picked up his second win on the season and Grady Unger (2K, 0W) and Hayden Fox (2K, 1W) closed the door,” said Fish. Under the lights in Ephrata Wednesday night, the Mules gave up two runs in the first inning, cut that lead in half with one run in the fifth, but gave up two more in the sixth, suffering the 4-1 loss. The Mounts, with an infield hit, a walk, and aggressive base running took that early lead. “Hayden settled in after that,” noted Fish. “He left the game in the sixth with the score 2-1. He pitched well, allowing just two hits and those two first inning runs. He was also 2-2 at the plate.” Solanco cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth when courtesy runner Ethan Clary stole second and Buckwalter stole home on a double steal. “Ephrata added two late runs to seal the game,” Fish said. “It was a good game and we finished with six hits and eight total baserunners. We just couldn’t get the big two out hit to get us going. “We are pleased with our 3-1

Jennings chipped in with a third at 27-7. “It was nice to see Maddie step up in the absence of Troyanna Miller who was out sick,” said Haines. “The bright spot of the meet was that over ten personal bests were earned.” Also in the field, Charlotte Melot picked up a second in the long jump with a 13-6 and Kerith Pain tied for second in the pole vault, clearing 7-0. Third place point winners were Aubrey Roop in the mile, Greta Plechner in the high jump, and Nathaly Molinarez in the javelin. In boys’ action, the hosting Pioneers won 15 of 18 events but after that, the going was much closer. Take away those firsts and Solanco secured six of 15 seconds and 9 of 15 thirds, for just a six point deficit. The Mules went 1-2 in the open 400 with Angel Daniel Morales (54.7) and Austin Wood (54.9) holding off the Pioneers. The pair also jump started the winning 4x400 relay with Don Messano and Colin Althoff bringing it home. “Dom led his fellow juniors (Morales, Wood, Althoff),” said Haines. “This group of juniors is improving and earning many points for the team.” Messano went on to win the triple jump (39-4) with Mike Grech taking second (37-4) while Althoff picked up a

ADVERTISER - Solanco Edition on the defending state champs. The Pioneers were coming in undefeated and without giving up a run. All that changed when Foulk clubbed a two out, two run triple to center field and Hanna Phillips followed with a run scoring single. As the game continued, so did the weather, eventually suspending the game in the fourth inning. Solanco’s good fortune took a turn in the third inning when the Pioneers sent 11 players to the plate and scored seven runs on seven hits. They pushed the lead to 13-4 in the fourth inning. The game will resume this week with one runner on and one out in that fourth inning.

the game after 2.5 innings. McClune (4 RBI), Dean (5 RBI) and Foulk (2 RBI) were the home run hitters of the day. Dean struck out four and walked two in the one hit win. “We legitimately hit the ball,” said Miller, “but it just got by them and we got extra bases. We did show some discipline at the plate. “As a group, they’re starting to find their roles and where they contribute,” Miller continued. “And we’re starting to have better swings at the plate, regardless of the pitching.” On a chilly and wet Friday, the Mares traveled to Lampeter to take

second in the 200 (22.9), placing ahead of sophomore Ryan Vanover, who was second in the 100 (11.6) with Will Paredes picking up third. Messano was also third in the long jump. Also placing in two events was David Harvey with a second in the 300 hurdles (45.6) and a third in the 110 highs. The Mules picked up just two more thirds on the track, a 2:13 by Jose Serrano Silvia in the 800 and a 12:07.4 by Adian McBride in the 3200. Back in the field, the Mules went 2-3 in the high jump with Luke Slack and Michael Carey both clearing 5-2. Other third place point winners included Nate Neuhauser in the shot (42-3.5) and Gabe LaMonica in the discus (116-8). “Like the girls, we lack experience but we continue to improve,” Haines said. “It was nice to see the team earning over 15 personal bests.” SOFTBALL The Mares shook off that seasonopening loss to Elizabethtown with three straight lopsided wins, pushing their runs scored total to 69 and runs against to 24. “We responded well after the loss,” stated head coach Brett Miller. Last Monday, April 1, they hosted CV and posted a 19-9 win that was closer than it appeared. “We were up 12-3 after four innings and were one hit away from the 10-run rule,” explained Miller. “Then, after two or three errors and a couple of miss-plays, the next thing you know it’s 12-9. Our youthful play showed,” he added. “We need more consistency and that comes with developing our skills and confidence.” Solanco looked to take charge with six runs in the first inning. After two walks, Jade Eshleman and Sierra Dean collected back-to-back RBI hits. Then, with two outs, CV helped things along with a couple hit batters and a walk. Kara McClune’s two run base hit was the big hit of the inning and pushed the lead to 6-0. CV came back with two in the top of the second and Solanco batted around in the bottom half and pushed in four more runs. Rebecca Foulk’s two run hit was one of just two hits that inning. Hanna Phillips added a base hit. McClune and Skyla Townsley worked RBI walks. Eshleman’s two run homer in the bottom of the fourth extended the advantage to 12-9. The Bucks, however, responded, sending 11 players to the plate and scoring six runs on six hits, a walk and an error. The Mares were charged with four errors on the day. “We talk about three outs an inning and being consistent,” said Miller. “It comes with gaining experience.” Solanco rose to the challenge, batting around and collecting timely hitting that resulted in seven runs and the win. Townsley’s bases loaded single was the big hit of the inning. Dean and Foulk also added two run base hits. “You have to give CV credit,” said Miller. “They finished with 10 hits and put the ball in play. And their pitcher threw well too. “Sierra is progressing quite well considering she was targeted to play first base and is now pitching,” he added. “The cold and windy weather was a little bit of a challenge.” Wednesday afternoon Solanco met little resistance against Ephrata. They pounded out 15 hits and scored 20 runs, 13 in the first inning, and ended

Aaron’s Acres is searching for a year-round facility to accommodate its growing programs. A nonprofit organization in central Pennsylvania, Aaron’s Acres provides individuals with developmental disabilities ages 5 through 21 year-round, therapeutically based, age-appropriate recreational programs focused on enhancing socialization and communication skills. The search comes after the announcement of the Manheim Community Pool’s potential 2020 close. Aaron’s Acres has based its programs at the pool for the past five years, and pools have been a staple of Aaron’s Acres’ programs since the organization’s start in 1998. The programs focus on including all participants in every activity regardless of ability level, meaning the organization has special requirements for a future facility. In addition, Aaron’s Acres hopes to consolidate its current facilities, including administrative offices and storage units, which are scattered across Lancaster County. The nonprofit is open to either developing a new building or repurposing an existing site. During Aaron’s Acres’ 20th anniversary gala in December 2018, the organization unveiled conceptual designs for its future facility, but the group remains open to discussion. The project is estimated to cost between $4 million and $5 million. Aaron’s Acres is seeking the public’s help in its search for a new location. To help, readers may call Aaron’s Acres’ Lancaster office at 717-917-6101. More information can be found at www.aaronsacres.org.
