MOPC to hold yard sale fundraiser
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, will host its annual yard sale fundraiser on Saturday, April 22, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The rain-or-shine event will include multiple vendors, and food and beverages will be available to be purchased.
Family fun and fire safety
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
It’sno mystery what role your local fire department plays in the community. You regularly see firefighters pile into their iconic engines on the road, and everyone has pulled over at least once for the blaring siren that signals an emergency response. But few outside of the most aptly named service could tell you exactly what gear they don when setting out on a call or what tools they employ to save lives in the midst of a catastrophe. To shed some light on its methods and procedures, the Quarryville Fire Department, 217 E. State St., Quarryville, will host a family fun night on Saturday, April 15, from 4 to 8 p.m.
The family fun night will include food and beverages by donation, including hot dogs, chips and bottled drinks. The event will serve as an opportunity for those in the community to meet their local firefighters, special division members and fire police officers, as well as to put a face to those who help keep the area safe.
Members of the Quarryville Fire Department will offer demonstrations of different types of equipment, detailing what name and function each piece has. A junior and senior member of the company will also compete in a gear race. Each firefighter will begin with a full set of equipment laid before him; the first one to get into gear wins. The goal of
the activity is to illustrate just how quickly firefighters can get ready to respond to a call.
The Quarryville Fire Department will present a rescue demonstration as well, during which a member of the company will be placed in a scrap vehicle. Other firefighters will then showcase the tools they use to cut open a wrecked car on a call to free the occupant. They will explain each part of the process and follow each step of their standard procedure. In addition to the gear and rescue demonstrations, firefighters will also set up different types of equipment for attendees to learn about and use, such as a firehose and bucket rides on a 95-foot-long firetruck ladder.
“We’re trying to educate the public on what we do and instill fire safety as well,” said Jason Hess, a fire police officer with the Quarryville Fire Department. “I feel it’s important that the public knows how we respond and gets to see behind the scenes. It’s also a great way to engage with your local first responders.”
The Quarryville Fire Department held its first family fun night last year as a recruitment event, to draw in volunteers which attracted over 100 attendees. Members of the fire company will be available to answer questions throughout the event. For more information, visit www.qfd57.com.
The vendors will be members of MOPC and the community. Each vendor will offer a variety of items, such as tools, small furniture, children’s toys and household goods. There will be a set cost for attendance, as well as a fee for vendors to secure a spot for the sale. Members of the church will also sell breakfast sandwiches and soup throughout the day. Although the indoor space has already been filled, the church will accept vendors until the day of the event to set up outside. For more information, contact Daniel Henry at 717-381-9947.
The spring yard sale is a tradition at MOPC that has been continued for over 25 years and serves as a fundraiser for the church’s mission work. The proceeds from this year’s sale will support the church’s efforts in the village of Tamshiyacu in Peru, where MOPC’s sister church is located. MOPC began a partnership with the village in 2007, constructing the church in 2008 and regularly making service trips to complete projects for the locals.

Many of the projects involve repairing buildings and maintaining the church, but the members of the church have increased their efforts to provide medical supplies to the village since the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the pandemic made it difficult for MOPC members to continue their regular visits, the church has raised money to help the staff at the nearest hospital, which is located in the nearby city of Iquitos, to acquire things like wheelchairs and respirators.
Over the last six months, the church has focused on supporting the hospital’s infant care and birthing unit by supplying diapers and clothes for newborns. Members of MOPC remain in contact with the head nurse of the hospital, who shares information on what the facility is most in need of. Due to the expenses involved with shipping items to Peru, MOPC directly supplies the hospital with money, which it can use to acquire materials. Twice a year, the head nurse administers anti-parasite
medication to the residents of Tamshiyacu.
“Supporting the church and the hospital is our biggest focus right now,” Daniel said. “We want to make people’s lives better and share in the Gospel of Christ, which we try to accomplish through all of these projects.”
Although the church has been unable to make any service trips to Tamshiyacu since the pandemic, Daniel’s brother Dave Henry traveled to the village in January to begin laying the groundwork for future trips. Dave hopes to lead a group of volunteers on a service trip to Tamshiyacu in September.

Registration open for IU13 conference
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Lampeter-Strasburg High School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster, will host the 27th annual Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13) education conference on Wednesday, June 21, from 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration will be available on a first-come-first-serve-basis until Friday, June 9, and an early bird discount will be offered to school district and agency personnel who register before Monday, May 1. To register, visit www.iu13.com.
This year, the theme of the conference is “Agents of Change … Mission Possible.” The conference advocates for academic, social and behavioral growth in students by
offering educational resources for parents and teachers alike.
The organization hopes to shape students into productive citizens and prepare them for success in academic and professional pursuits.
At 8:40 a.m., keynote speaker Shelley Moore will explore the topic of inclusion and how it relates to educators. Moore holds a bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Alberta, a master’s degree from Simon Fraser University and a doctorate from the University of British Columbia. She has collaborated with school districts and community organizations worldwide to promote inclusion in classrooms.
Morning breakout sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to
Shoes & Boots For The Whole Family
noon, and afternoon breakout sessions will occur from 1 to 3 p.m. The sessions will focus on different aspects of education to assist administrators, special educators, general educators, substitute teachers and parents of students.
During the morning sessions, presenters will address topics such as the usage of e-cigarettes among students, the difference between decodable and leveled texts, techniques for educating students with autism spectrum disorder and how to creatively engage students with technol-
ogy in the classroom. In the afternoon sessions, speakers will tackle issues such as managing exhaustion in both teachers and students, creating a safe environment for a diverse range of students and how to use innovative disciplinary practices. Presenters will include education consultants, social workers, teachers and psychologists.
When IU13 first began to host the conference, it primarily focused on special education topics, but the organization decided to broaden the scope of subjects to include
more areas of the schooling world. “A lot of conferences are geared towards a specific group, such as teachers or parents. This conference encompasses everyone; everyone can attend and find something relevant in a session,” said Linda Murr, program support liaison for IU13.
This will be the first IU13 education conference held since 2019, due to the cancellation of the event in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “A lot of people have been asking about when the event will happen again
over the past few years,” Murr said. “We’re very excited to be bringing the conference back.”
For more information, call Murr at 717-606-1878.

Mules fall to Township; Herr no-hits E-town
BY MONA STEINHAUER
After opening the season with a 4-3 thriller over visiting Manheim Township on Tuesday, March 28, the Mules were denied making it 2-0 three days later as the Streaks posted a 6-0 final in Neffsville to even the tally.
Solanco looked to threaten in the second inning with a two out single by Cody Moyer and a double by Owen McElroy, but a strikeout ended the inning.
Township left two on in their half of the inning and two more in the third before finally breaking the game open with a two run fourth. With two outs, the Streaks reached on an error and connected with back-to-back doubles for the lead they never relinquished. They scored two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings as well while Solanco struggled to get going, managing single walks in the fifth and sixth innings before mounting its biggest threat in the seventh.
Sawyer Weyman singled to start the inning and, with one out, Owen McElroy and Vilk worked a pair of walks to load the bags. A strikeout and a popout to right field ended the rally.
Township’s Trey Eckman struck out ten and scattered three hits in his first career start.
Kayden Strong started for the Mules and gave up five hits, and four runs (one earned) and struck out three and walked five in 4.2 innings. Weyman gave up two hits and two runs in relief.
The Mules committed three errors while the Streaks were flawless.
Solanco posted a 5-0 bounce back win on Monday, April 3 at Elizabethtown with Brayden Herr firing a no hitter with nine strikeouts.
“We love Brayden’s work ethic and trust every time he takes the mound,” said Miller. “He’s going to give us a shot to win. He was on another level and that really pushed his teammates. We played well all around.”
Burger’s solo homer in the first inning got the Mules rolling. And in the second, Underwood reached on a bunt error, Dean walked and Herr’s single plated Underwood, who stole third on a wild pitch.
“And Owen McElroy helped pad the lead in the sixth with a two-run single,” added Miller. “I thought our baserunning and speed was a huge factor, creating pressure on the bases all game long.
“We are looking forward to a few more wins and letting the section know that Solanco is going to be a tough team to beat this season.”
Harnish and Herr both collected two hits with McElroy leading with two RBI.
Wednesday’s outing against visiting Lampeter-Strasburg resulted in a 10-7 loss despite flawless defense. The Pioneers out hit their hosts 10-5 and, despite three errors, took the lead for good with a four-run third inning. L-S led 5-2 heading into the sixth and both teams scored five runs over the final two innings.
Burger and Harnish (3RBI)
accounted for four of Solanco’s five hits.
TRACK
The track teams opened Section Two play against one of the toughest teams in the league in Ephrata and were dealt a pair of losses despite some solid performances.
“Ephrata is one of the top teams and their junior high went undefeated last year so we knew it would be a tough meet,” said head coach Jen McDowell.
Despite an 88-62 loss for the girls, it was a pretty even battle (32-31) in the field events.
“We got a big contribution from freshman Avery Caldwell who won the javelin,” McDowell pointed out.
Martha Weaver won the discus, was second in the shot and backed Caldwell with a third in the javelin.
Also in the field, Olianna Oravitz won both the long and triple jumps and Katie Urbine took the pole vault and was third in the long jump. The two also went 1-2 in the 100 with Emma Housekeeper’s third providing a sweep.
Solanco’s final win on the track went to Emma Baxter in the mile with Christine Wagner adding thirds in both the mile and 3200, behind Daria Neaves.
“We also had a great race in the 400,” noted McDowell, where Sara Bard’s 1:03.1 was just behind Ephrata’s winning pace of 1:02.
The boys’ team suffered a similar fate, bowing out 86-64 but holding their own in the field, 32-31.
Josian Forren won the long and was second in the triple
three hits and one RBI each while Gote went 2-2 with that triple and four runs batted in.
Anna Sexton struck out eight batters in the complete game shutout.
“It was good for Anna to get some innings and rest a couple of players,” Miller said.
Monday, April 3, in a game that featured a combined 15 full counts on batters, and 27 total hits, Solanco opened section play with an 11-5 victory over visiting Elizabethtown.
They led from the start, holding a 5-0 lead after two innings and a 5-3 edge after four, but finally took charge with a five-run fifth.
circle and finished with six strikeouts and four walks over 4.1 innings. Sexton covered the final 2.2 innings with two strikeouts and three walks.
“Anna did what you want a senior to do…entered the pitching circle in a tough situation (1 out, bases loaded in the fourth) and got us out of it,” said Miller. “She improved as the game moved along and finished strong.
“We need to improve our defensive play and understanding to be competitive within our section,” he added.
and John Sankus threw a 121-3 PR to win the discus and was third in the shot behind Caldwell while Rusty Armstrong won the pole vault and Tucker Kylar cleared 5-10 to take the high jump.
On the track, Anthony Solis Morales won the mile and was second in the 800 while Issac Esh and Wyatt Tomison went 1-2 in the 3200. Riley Ford added a pair of seconds, placing in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.
“Our distance team stepped up against a very talented team,” added McDowell. “Overall, we did very well in several areas against a team that will most likely lead the section.”
SOFTBALL
The softball team wrapped up the non-league portion of the season with their fourth straight victory, a 13-0 shutout against visiting Susquehannock on Friday, March 31.
“We got the result we were looking for,” said head coach Brett Miller. “It was good for us to continue to be selective offensively and make adjustments throughout the game.”
The hosts took charge from the start, batting around plus two in the opening inning while plating seven runs on five hits. Delaney Gote’s three run triple was the big blow while Ava Fedoruk’s two run double capped the first inning action.
Solanco picked up single runs in the second and third innings before batting around in the fourth and plating four more runs to end the game early.
Fedoruk went 4-4 with two RBI, Holly Grube and Sara Defrancesco finished with
“That was a good team in a challenging game as batters and pitchers needed to make adjustments,” said Miller. “We got some timely key hits when needed. Ava Fedoruk has been consistently striking the ball and is improving defensively.”
Those key hits included a RBI single by Grube (3-5, 2 RBI) and a two-run rip by Fedoruk (3 RBI) in the second inning. Fedoruk also collected a two run double in the fifth, along with a sac fly RBI by Sara Defrancesco and a run scoring single by Olivia Musser.
Kira Roark started in the
That defensive play slipped in Wednesday’s section clash in Lampeter as Solanco committed five errors, were out hit 12-7 and suffered a 14-4 defeat.
“Solanco loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first and we got out of it,” said Pioneer boss Earl Rutledge. “If they capitalize there, the whole momentum changes.”
And change it did. L-S came back to score four in the bottom half and exploded for eight in the second, pushing the lead to 12-2.
Janssen (1RBI) and Grube each had two hits in the loss and Defrancesco crushed a two out, solo homer in the third.

Athletes announce college choices
Solanco students Riley Ford, Anthony Solis Morales and Katie Urbine signed their letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at the colleges of their choice. The signing event took place on March 28. Solis Morales will attend
Lock Haven University and compete on the cross-country and track teams. Urbine will attend Liberty University and compete on the track team in pole vault and sprints, and Ford will attend Ursinus College and run sprints for the track team.

Encouraging the next generation of artists
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
On April 2, Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, opened “Elementary & The Middle,” an art exhibit that features work from students from first to eighth grades. The exhibit includes students from across the county and will remain in the Kauffman Gallery until Sunday, April 23.
LCAA first held the exhibit last year as a way to encourage young artists to engage with the arts. Prior to the opening, this year LCAA contacted schools from around Lancaster County to invite their art classes to participate. Certain classes chose a specific
theme for their students to work within, but the exhibit includes artwork from a variety of mediums such as pastels, oil painting and drawing.
“Even just being able to work on the creative side of one’s personality helps in other areas like math and problem solving,” said Patricia Keller of Landisville, who is a member of LCAA and helps to coordinate its events. “It’s important to have an outlet and use a different part of
your brain.” During the opening of the exhibit, prizes were awarded to students in different categories for each grade.

A painting in the exhibit by Jayanna Church, a 5th-grader from Sacred Heart of Jesus School See LCAA pg 7
LCAA also opened a themed membership exhibit in its Steinmetz Gallery titled “The Natural World.” The exhibit features 11-by-14-inch paintings from members of the organization, each depicting a different scene found in nature, such as landscapes, bodies of water and wildlife. The exhibit will remain in the gallery until April 23 and may be visited during LCAA’s regular hours of Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.
This summer, LCAA will also host a variety of art classes and camps for kids. On Saturdays, April 29, May 6 and May 13, the organization will host “Clay Days,” a course that will explore different techniques when working with clay and creating sculptures. On Saturdays, April 15, April 22 and April 29, “Painting Primer” will be held at LCAA to introduce students to multiple painting mediums.
On Saturdays, June 17 and 24, LCAA will host a sketchbook challenge. For the challenge, students will receive a sketchbook and will be encouraged to fill it with drawings as they hone their skills throughout the summer. At the end of the summer, each sketchbook will be displayed at an exhibit to be judged, and awards will be given out to artists for their work.
From Monday, July 10, to Friday, July 14, a painting camp will be held at LCAA for youths between the ages of 10 and 16. Participants in the
camp will utilize mediums such as watercolor paint, acrylic paint and mixed media to create pieces inspired by nature. An art show to display their work will be held on July 14, at 12:30 p.m.
“We want to encourage people to bring their children to creative classes and get them involved with the arts,” Keller said. “The more you get young people involved, the better.”
LCAA also offers art classes for adults throughout the year. For more information, visit www.lcaaonline.org.

Program to focus on historical postcards
The Solanco Historical Society will present “Early Susquehanna River Views” on Saturday, April 15, at 1:30 p.m. at the society’s Archives Building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville. The society’s building is located 6 miles south of Quarryville, across from the Robert Fulton Birthplace.
Early postcard views along the Susquehanna River from Columbia to York Haven will be displayed. Postcards will cover Columbia and the Pennsylvania Railroad, Chickies Rock and the park that operated there. Attendees will be able to see photos of the iron furnaces between Columbia and Marietta, as well as the Accomac and Wildcat Falls hotels in York County and the ferry boats that went back and forth on the river at this summer vacation spot. The talk will end with a discussion of Bainbridge and the York Haven hydroelectric plant.
Speaker Mark W. Arbogast is a retired PPL land manager who worked at the Holtwood and Brunner Island power plant projects. He is a local historian and postcard collector.
Handi-Camp seeks volunteers
Handi-Camp, a ministry of Handi-Vangelism Ministries International, is a Christian camping program serving children, teens, and adults with disabilities. The camp is seeking volunteers to fill a variety of roles, including collecting supplies, being a host family to out-of-town staff members, providing a staff meal, or serving as a day camp buddy. Donations to support the camp, which does not charge a fee for campers, are also needed.
Staff members will attend training in early June. Threeday camp programs will begin on Thursday, June 8, and run through Wednesday, July 12.
For more information about volunteer opportunities and the day camp program, contact tkelley@hvmi.org or 717-859-4777 or visit www.hvmi.org/handi-camp.

Camps planned for children and adults with special needs
The Pennsylvania Lions Beacon Lodge Camp has opened registration for the upcoming camp season.
Situated on 583 acres along the Juniata River in Mount Union, Beacon Lodge Camp was organized in 1948 to meet the needs of Pennsylvania residents with vision impairments. Beacon Lodge has grown into an inclusive summer camp for both children and adults with blindness or vision impairments, as well as individuals with other special needs, including intellectual disabilities, autism, mobility issues, deafness and hearing impairments, and ADHD.
The camp is funded primarily by donations, and it has been sponsored by the Pennsylvania Lions for 75 years as a state project. During the camping season, Beacon Lodge operates as a full-service summer camp for children and adults with a variety of special needs.
The camp’s mission is to provide all individuals with special needs the opportunity to enjoy a camping experience. Special emphasis is placed on stimulating interests and appreciation for recreation and
learning, as well as encouraging campers to take on new challenges.
Beacon Lodge offers several different camping sessions based on camper abilities.
Activities focus on campers’ strengths, not their weaknesses. Activities range from bingo and arts and crafts to the climbing tower and zip line.
The camp also offers special sessions and programming for military veterans who have become disabled. Camp Project New Hope offers camping experiences for veterans and their families.
For information on the 2023 camping season, visit www.beaconlodge.org.
