Sail Away With “The Pirates Of Penzance” tarting Friday, May 7, ondemand streaming of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance” by Solanco High School (SHS) will be available for viewers. The show is directed by SHS music teacher Erin Biles, and SHS English teacher John Biles serves as assistant director. “The Pirates of Penzance” is an operetta, so most of the production will be sung. “ We’re recording it in house over three performances,” explained Erin. “There’s nothing like live theater, though, but we do what we need to do to keep everyone safe and still give the kids a great experience.” Tickets can be purchased at www.showtix4u.com by searching for “Solanco” with a two-week streaming window. Viewers must watch the show within 48 hours once streaming has begun. “The Pirates of Penzance” centers around a group of pirates led by the Pirate King, played by junior Aden Jackson, who prepares to say
S
goodbye to his indentured servant Frederick, played by senior Kendell Beiler. After leaving the pirates and his nursery maid, Ruth, played by senior Emily Herr, Frederick meets sweet Mabel, played by senior Lauren Yoder. Mabel, one of the daughters of Major General Stanley, played by senior Tristan Rush, immediately falls in love with Frederick, but the couple’s nuptials are delayed when the Pirate King and Ruth reveal a paradox that ropes Frederick back into a life of piracy. The second act features a group of police who, under the leadership of the Sergeant of Police, played by junior Elliot Spangler, are afraid of their own shadow. Some of the cast members talked about their experiences while rehearsing. “Due to certain restrictions, we weren’t able to rehearse together for the first few weeks,” said Herr, “but the musical itself has a nice divide between the daughters, the pirates, and the police. We all rehearsed separately in these three groups, then we put it all together.” Solanco High School students rehearse for their performance of “The Pirates of Penzance.”

Parents Plan Prom And Post Prom
School Recovers From Fire
Many events have been canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Solanco High School’s traditional prom was one of them. As opposed to calling off the festivities completely, parents of Solanco High School students decided to plan a prom and post prom for the seniors. Although parents have been in charge of organizing post prom for several years, this will only be the second year they have planned both prom and post prom. “This year has been very difficult because of the pandemic,” explained Gretchen Pletchner. “There have been so The core group of parents planning a prom and post prom for Solanco High School students consists of (from left) Ellen Shank, many roadblocks and limitations on what Connie Boyd, Kerry Sheaffer, Gretchen Pletchner, Amanda Brown, we could do to fundraise.” See Prom pg 4 Patti Jackson, Justine Kreider, Roy Kimes, and Leah Kimes.

For nearly 50 years, The Jenkins School has sought to provide children ages 3 to 5 with a quality education. Although the school is located within the Hempfield School District, children from all over Lancaster County have attended Jenkins. On Sept. 9, 2020, there was an accidental electrical fire in the art room, which closed the school for nearly a week. By Sept. 21, 2020, all of the children were able to safely return to Jenkins. Every Sunday from April 11 to May 9, children from prekindergarten to eighth grade can participate in the Healthy Kids Running Series at Daniel’s Den Playground at Manor Church, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster. Dana Atticks, community coordinator, has been running the Lancaster series for five seasons. “I fell in love with running in 2015; it really changed my life,” said Atticks. “I feel like I’ve been given an opportunity to use my passion to help and support others.” Atticks became coordinator after she assisted a friend with organizing the series in the spring of 2017. When her friend asked if Atticks would like to take over as coordinator in the fall, Atticks felt as if it was something she was supposed to do. “I have four children, and my three girls have been a tremendous help ever since I took over the series,” noted Atticks. “They do the warm-ups, the timing … it’s been a family affair.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the series was postponed in 2020. This year, however, families are able to come back and participate. “I’ve been trying to build up the series for families in Lancaster County because I feel as though we’ve been so disconnected during the pandemic,” said Atticks. “I really just want people to come out, meet their neighbors, and encourage their kids.” Throughout the series, runners earn points and those with the most points earn trophies, but all participants receive medals. Each season, the coordinator selects one runner as the recipient of the Healthy Kids Award. “This award is for someone who embodies the whole idea of being a healthy kid,” explained Atticks. “During my first season, I gave the award to an inspiring boy with autism who just gripped my heart. He showed up every week, ran his race, and never gave up.” At the end of the series, parents have the opportunity to participate in a mile run while their children watch. “I promote this because it’s a way for us to show our kids how much they inspire us,” noted Atticks. “Our kids come out every week and do their best. Let’s show them what their effort does for us.” To sponsor the Healthy Kids Running Series, visit https:// healthykidsrunningseries.org and search for the local series. Prom from pg 1 The parents have been raising money for the event since last summer. So far, they have sold mums from Esbenshade’s Garden Centers & Greenhouse, subs from R&K Subs, homemade pork barbecue, Emma’s Popcorn, and more. Their most recent event was a dinner with a 50/50 giveaway drawing and silent auction at Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard. “The dinner at Britain Hill was a huge success,” noted Connie Boyd. “We had amazing support from the community. It really boosted every-
one’s positivity to keep going.” Prom will take place on Saturday, June 26, in the Jim & Eleanor Kreider & Family Building at the Solanco Fairgrounds. There will be a dinner and dancing, followed by a pool party for post prom. “Our group is still meeting to brainstorm ideas of how to raise more money,” added Pletchner. “Everyone is struggling in some way
with the pandemic. We need donations, but we understand that we’re all in a difficult situation.” “We’re doing all of this for the kids,” said Boyd. “They deserve to have something normal because their entire senior year hasn’t been normal.” To make a donation to help fund prom and post prom, contact either Pletchner at 717-201-1122 or Boyd at 717-278-5082.

Zooks Homemade Chicken Pies Celebrates Grand Opening! Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies was founded by Amos and Rachel Zook back in 2001. They sold the business to Lee & Rose Anna King (daughter and son-in-law) in 2007 and it has now moved from Harvest Drive to a new location at 3427 Lincoln Hwy East, Paradise, PA 17562. On April 15, 16 & 17 the public is invited to a Grand Opening celebration of Dutch Town & Country Market, the retail side of Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies, where you will find not only Zook’s Pies but also Local milk, ice cream, jarred goods, bakery items and other specialty foods. prekindergarten classes in another room,” explained Tina Miller, director of The Jenkins School. “This setup lasted until Christmas.” When the children returned from winter break, all of the kindergartners and prekindergartners moved into the fellowship hall. Their classrooms were separated by dividers, which gave each class its own space. This arrangement was in effect until March 8, when repairs were completed and classes could return to their original locations. “For months, we were displaced, moving and shifting as needed,” said Miller. “We tried to run the school as normal as we could, but everything was scattered and space was limited to store things until we were able to move back upstairs. It’s been quite the year on top of COVID.” Everything in the art room and library was lost in the fire. The ceilings and floors in the classrooms

Jenkins School from pg 6 For the first time, The Jenkins School is opening its annual art show to the public on Saturday, April 17, at the school, 3131 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Families from Lancaster County are welcome to view the children’s artwork and tour the school from 1 to 3 p.m. Those who intend to visit must contact Miller at tina.miller@thejenkinsschool.com or call 717-295-1548. “I think one of the things that sets us apart is that we’re like one big family,” explained Miller. “You hear people call us ‘the Jenkins family,’ and it is that way because we’re involved with each other all the time. This is great for kids transitioning to the next class because they already know the teacher; it’s not a new face in a new space.” The Jenkins School has an open enrollment policy, so as long as there is space in the classroom, parents are able to enroll their children throughout the year. “We have an awesome library and a great art and music program,” said Miller. “Parents know that when their kids come here, they’re safe. We know the kids, we know the parents, and the kids know each other.” For more information about The Jenkins School, visit www.thejenkinsschool.com or call 717-295-1548.

In addition, Providence Elementary’s Chloe Gill, also in fifth grade, scored 194 out of 300 points, placing her in the 85th percentile and qualifying her as an alternate for the national finals. “We are extremely proud of these two students and wish them the best of luck as they prepare for the national finals,” said Ryan Humphries, Solanco elementary teacher. MathCON is an online mathematics competition that puts students’ math skills to the test as they compete in a grade-level contest against math students from around the country. The first round is an online test, comprised of multiplechoice questions that require students to take the knowledge they have gathered from their current mathematics class and apply it to problems using their own ingenuity and insight. The next step for qualifying students is to complete a final assessment against other top U.S. elementary math students in early May.

closer than the final. We had our chances, but it didn’t go our way.” Tyler Burger started on the hill and, through four innings of work, struck out eight and walked three. “He worked out of some jams and kept us in the game by getting some big outs along the way,” Fish stated. Seth Harnish and Logan Wagner pitched in relief. Wednesday’s 11-4 win at CV pushed Solanco’s record to 2-1. After a scoreless first inning, Solanco took the lead for good with three runs in the second. Worthington beat out an infield single to start the inning. “He slid into first base headfirst and that really got us going,” said Fish. Nate Harnish followed with a base hit and Nate Miller singled in Worthington. Ethan Clary’s groundout scored Harnish, and Miller came home when Ronnie Fulton reached on an error. Single runs were added in the third and fifth innings as the Mules extended their lead.
“Worthington doubled in the third and scored on a wild play from second on a strike three in the dirt,” said Fish. “He really gave us a spark today.” Solanco’s fifth inning run came on a Harnish base hit and a Worthington sac fly. CV cut the lead to 5-4 with a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings before the Mules exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away. “It was 5-4 in the sixth with one out and the tying runner in scoring position,” said Fish. “Harnish came on in relief and worked a key strikeout. Plus, we got a ton of defensive help including a diving, run saving play by junior short stop Avery Jacobsen. That kept us in front.” Senior pitcher Ethan Clary earned the start, the first in his career, and got the win. He allowed two runs over five innings, struck out three and gave up four hits. “He was impressive in his debut on the mound,” praised Fish. Offensively, Worthington was 3for-3 with a double and two base

Congratulations to our nurses for their continued commitment to quality care and service excellence. While we are extremely proud to receive ANCC Magnet Recognition® for nursing excellence for the fifth consecutive time, the real winners are our patients. Our team of nurses is dedicated to providing the highest level of care every day for our patients. Magnet Recognition® is the most prestigious international distinction a health system can receive for nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes. Congratulations to our nursing team for bringing home gold, again. All six of Penn Medicine’s acute-care facilities — which also includes The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Hospital, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Chester County Hospital, and Princeton Medical Center — have achieved Magnet Recognition®.
