Go Beyond: A Week of Service will take place in Lancaster and Lebanon counties from Thursday, May 2, to Saturday, May 11, and several Southern End churches plan to participate in the communityfocused event. Victory Church, Providence Church, and Oak Hill Fellowship have coordinated activities during which their members will serve in the community, undertaking tasks such as doing yard work and construction projects for folks in need. Participating churches and business are also holding a diaper drive for crisis pregnancy centers and a shoe drive that will help to fund local projects. Go Beyond is a countywide initiative of local churches with a mission of uniting people to serve yearround. Each year, a week is designated as a coordinated time of
service, although the vision of the organizers is to ignite a culture of service in area churches and communities. This year’s kickoff will take place during the National Day of Prayer celebration at Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz, on May 2, and the week will conclude on May 11 with Community Cleanups in Quarryville, Lancaster, and Myerstown. In Quarryville, a prayer walk will be held on Saturday, May 4, and a Community Cleanup and Family Fun Bash will take place on May 11. The prayer walk on May 4 will begin at 9 a.m. in Huffnagle Park, 20 Oak Lane, Quarryville, with a brief time of singing and a message of purpose. Then, the group will walk around the borough, stopping at key locations to pray for different aspects of the community. See Go Beyond pg 7
During Go Beyond: A Week of Service, which is set for May 2 to 11, members of the Southern End community may help with Community Cleanup events, go on a prayer walk, or celebrate with a Family Fun Bash.

We serve them the traditional way. They’ll be freshly fried and drizzled with spiced honey.” Loukoumades are double-leavened, with both baking powder and fresh

Gyrofest from pg 1 the colloquial names of “honey balls” or “honey puffs.” They are also known as “honey tokens” because of their history. Soukas related that loukoumades were awarded to athletes at the ancient Olympic Games. Olive oil, honey, and gold were coveted items, and as loukoumades contained the first two, only the rich could enjoy them. Soukas related that 8,000 loukoumades were sold at last year’s bazaar, and he and his cochair, Manny Firoglanis, are planning to sell 4,000 of the pastries at Gyrofest this year. The honey balls will be available by the piece. Other treats offered at the festival will include Greek coffee and frappes, baklava and baklava sundaes, butter cookies called koulourakia, and rice pudding, which will be sold with or without cinnamon in 4-ounce and 8-ounce containers. “Cinnamon is a very Greek spice,” Soukas remarked. The main dish at Gyrofest, a pita filled with meat, vegetables, and tzatziki sauce, will be sold in a platter with Greek fries and a salad. The organizers are expecting to sell 3,000 platters. “It’s been a really good event for us,” Soukas commented. “It invites contact with the community and gets our people together to work toward a common goal.” In a nod to Mother’s Day, which will be observed on the day following Gyrofest, event marketer E.J. Schrott coined the phrase “Your mother’s a hero: Buy her a gyro.” Tickets for the platters may be purchased for a discount at www.annunciationorthodox.org /gyrofest or for full price at the event. The proceeds from Gyrofest will divided, with one-third going to charity efforts such as PowerPacks Project and preschool scholarships. The other two-thirds will go to the church’s operating budget. For more information about Gyrofest, readers may find the Gyrofest page on Facebook or call the church office at 717394-1735.

Diamond Teams Fall to Knights, Top Streaks by Mona Steinhauer
Playing four games in four days, the Mules were challenged last week and passed the test with three wins against a single loss. Monday they dropped an 11-1 result against Hempfield but came back to win three straight, nipping Manheim Township 4-3, coming from behind to beat Elizabethtown and crushing Lebanon 16-10. “We really gave ourselves a great opportunity to make both league and district playoffs,” said head coach Tom Fish. “We stand at 9-5 (8-5 in league play) and if we take care of business against CV, the game against Ephrata could determine the runner up finish in Section Two and a spot in the league playoffs. And, as far as districts go, we are sitting 10th, with 14 teams qualifying for 5A.” The determining factor in Monday’s six inning loss to the Knights was hitting. Hempfield pounded out 13 hits, scored four runs in both the first and second innings and led 10-1 after three complete. The Mules scored their lone run in the top of the first inning when Tim Fetterman singled home Dawson Kreider. Solanco finished
with five hits on the day. “Corey Stively started on the mound, but we got him out of the game early, so we could use him later in the week,” Fish stated. “The lone bright spot on the day was senior Nate Butler. He made his debut performance on the mound and was our best pitcher on the day, pitching two and two thirds innings, allowing only one run.” With no time to lament, the Mules pulled off a 4-3 thriller over Township Tuesday. Dawson Kreider walked to lead off the game and Seth Harnish singled. After a wild pitch, Fetterman drove them both in with a single to right. They picked up one more run in the second when Hunter Shaw drew a walk and later scored on a Kreider single. “We came out swinging,” said Fish. “After scoring three runs, it was the Hayden Fox show, not just on the mound, where he was absolutely awesome, holding the tough MT lineup to just one hit and two unearned runs on three strikeouts, but with the bat as well. He doubled home what turned out to be the game winning run in the bottom of the sixth. “From there, after Hayden reached his 100th pitch count, Dawson Kreider
earned the save,” continued Fish. “He forced a weak ground out back to the mound with the score 4-3, and runners on second and third. This was a huge bounce back win for the team.” With the score tied at 2-2 on Wednesday against visiting Elizabethtown, Solanco rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and escaped with a 5-2 victory. “Corey got the start and picked up his fifth win of the season with a masterpiece,” stated Fish. “He struck out ten and did not walk a single batter, going all seven innings.” E-town broke in front with one run in the second. John Murray’s RBI single in the bottom half knotted the score. Two innings later, the Bears scored another solo run and once again Solanco tied it up, this time with a Joel McGuire base hit. Then, in the bottom of the fifth, they broke the game open, scoring three runs thanks to singles by Sam Buckwalter, Kreider, Mike May and an E-town error. “Corey was really the story of the game,” Fish said. “He bounced back with a tremendous start.” Thursday in Lebanon, the Mules came out on top in an old fashioned slugfest. Solanco out hit the Cedars
14-10 and scored in six of seven innings. A two-run homer by Harnish sparked a three run first inning. Lebanon matched that in the bottom half. Solanco plated two more in the second and the hosts answered with two in the bottom of the third. A six run top of the fourth, however, proved to be the deal breaker for the Cedars. “Mike May had three hits (2 doubles) and drove in a season high five runs,” said Fish. “Tim Fetterman put together five quality at bats, finishing with two singles, a sac fly, two walks and three stolen bases. Shaw had three hits, including a triple, and Murray added two singles, including a two run single in the seventh that gave us some breathing room. “This week is a big one,” Fish continued. “In addition to CV and Ephrata, we face section leader L-S on Friday and Saturday play Donegal at the Clipper Magazine Stadium in a nonleague game, but an important game when it comes to our district ranking.” SOFTBALL One win and a single loss last week moved Solanco’s Section Two record to 6-6. They sit in third place behind
undefeated Lampeter-Strasburg and Elizabethtown (8-4). The Mares wrapped up crossover action with a home game against Hempfield last Monday. In a wild game that see-sawed back-and-forth and featured a combined 30 hits, nine walks and four errors, Solanco lost a tightly contested 13-11 thriller. “That was a crazy game,” said head coach Brett Miller. “I never expected the score to be that high.” Jade Eshleman’s two run homer sparked a five run first inning and her solo homer in the third cut the lead to 7-6 but Hempfield came back with four in the top of the second and took the lead with three in the top of the third. The Mares went back in front with two runs in the fourth on back-toback run scoring singles by Eshleman and Sierra Dean but the Knights took control after that, scoring six runs over the last three innings while Solanco scored just three. The Mares left the bases loaded in the sixth and managed just one hit in their last at bat, a single by Kara McClune. Dean got the start in the circle and Hanna Phillips, seeing action for the first time this season, came
on in relief. “As the game progressed, I felt we should have won,” said Miller. “You come that close, you might as

ADVERTISER - Solanco Edition had a hit and Jade (2-5, 1 RBI) crushed a triple. The last few games she has really been hitting the ball. Sierra also consistently hits the ball hard. She’s a tough out. And with Kara up front, something good will happen. “From week to week we move people around, trying to figure out where everyone fits in and the girls have all responded well,” the coach added. “Districts is still a possibility but we’ll have to work for it.” TRACK In a home meet last Tuesday, Solanco’s track teams came away with mixed results. With double wins from Aubrey Roop, Alana Yoder and Troyana Miller, the girls passed Cocalico (1-4) in the Section Two standings with an 83-67 triumph, moving to 2-3. The boys’ had a tougher challenge as the Eagles remained in a two-way tie for second place in Section Two with an 88-62 road win. “The girls’ came away with a great win, outperforming what they were predicted to do by earning points in areas they were not predicted to earn,” said head coach Ivan Haines. Roop collected her points with firsts in the mile (6:04.9) and the 3200 (14:02.7) while Yoder sprinted her way to top times in the 400 (1:00) and the 200 (27.4). She was also second in the 100 (13.4) with Charlotte Melot taking third (13.6). The Mares opened the meet with a
winning 12:49 from Mariah Stoltzfus, Emma Curtis, Chesley Ledesma and Sarah Snyder in the 4x800 relay. Solanco padded its lead with a strong showing in the field events, particularly in the throws where they outscored the Eagles 18-9. Miller, with over a four foot personal best (33-0), Maddie Mosley (30-1.25) and Peyton Jennings (29-7.5) swept the shot put before Miller earned her second win of the day with a 105-7 in the discus. Madi Davis was second (83-1) and Jennings, with an 83-2 for third in the javelin, prevented a Cocalico sweep. Also in the field, Kerith Paine cleared 8-6 to win the pole vault and was third in the high jump (4-0), backing teammate Greta Plechner who cleared 4-6 to win. Aleksa Burger added a pair of seconds, going 16-3.25 for a district qualifying long jump, and then 32-7 in the triple. “Keirth and Greta continue to jump well and Aleksa picked up personal bests by over one foot in both jumps,” Haines said. “The girls earned over 15 personal records on the day.” Other point scorers included Olivia Lasko - 2nd in the 300 hurdles and 3rd in the 100 hurdles (21.0); Elaina Kreider- 2nd in the 3200 (14:12.2) and third in the mile (6:19.5); Stoltzfus 2nd in the 800 (2:47.2); and Curtis 3rd in the 800 (2:50.2). For the boys’, Colin Althoff and Dom Messano continued to pace the Mules as top point scorers, each win-
ning two individual events and joining Daniel Morales and Serrano to win the 4x400 relay (3:31.9). Althoff did his work on the track, winning the 100 (11.7) and 400 (51.8) sprints while Messano jumped his way to firsts in the long (21-1) and triple (40-9). “The boys went up against a team stacked in the throwing events,” noted Haines. “Although most of our throwers earned personal bests, they were not able to place. “Colin continues to improve and anchored the 4x400 relay who earned their best time of the season,” the coach continued. “Dom also jumped personal bests in both of his events. “As with the girls’ team, most of the points were earned by underclassmen and 17 personal bests were earned by the team.” Solanco’s sixth and final win went to Will Paredes with a 23.8 in the 200. He also followed Althoff in the 100 (11.7). Also placing in two events was David Harvey with a second in the 300 hurdles (45.6) and a third in the 110 highs (18.3) where he followed Matt Weicksel (18.3). Serrano finished with seconds in the mile (5:00.4) and the 800 (2:15.4), Angel Daniel was second in the 400 (54.0) and third in the 200 (24.2) and Mike Grech picked up thirds in the long (19-7.5) and triple (37-11) jumps. Other point scorers included Elijah Reimold - 2nd in the high (5-4), Lucas Boyd - 2nd in the pole vault (9-0), Nate Neuhauser - 2nd in the shot (43-6.5) and Morales - 3rd in the pole vault (9-0).

well win. “As far as pitching, this was the first time Hanna threw against batters, but she’s a veteran pitcher and she did well.” Wednesday the Mares returned to Section Two play and looked to even the series against Elizabethtown. They did just that, jumping out to a 10-0 lead after 5.5 innings and holding on for a 10-6 win. Phillips went the distance in the circle, striking out three, walking three and giving up 12 hits. “I felt we had a good opportunity this time around, no matter who pitched,” Miller stated. “The first time we played it was 13-2 and we started three freshmen who were playing their first varsity game. It does make a difference.” Solanco went in front with two runs in the second and extended the lead with a three run fourth. McClune’s (3-5, 2 RBI) two run double was the big hit of the inning. Up 6-0 after five complete innings, the visitors collected three straight base hits and took advantage of three Bear miscues to all but end the game. E-town responded with two in the sixth and four in the seventh to cut the lead. “We knew we needed to win at least one of these two games,” stated Miller. “You want to win every game but the reality isn’t always the same. “We had a good hitting day,” he added. “Almost everyone in the lineup

The NiVan people of Vanuatu, located in the interior jungle regions of a tiny South Pacific island, are one of the groups supported by Friends In Action International (FIA), which has a headquarters located between Elizabethtown and Middletown. FIA supports mission work in areas of limited infrastructure by using construction projects to communicate the Gospel. Last year, FIA hosted nearly 75 volunteers who served as “blue collar missionaries.” Because FIA partners with trained missionaries already on the ground, volunteers offer their life experiences and construction skills to demonstrate God’s love in tangible ways, while national pastors or missionaries share the Gospel in some of the most remote locations in the world. In 2018, FIA volunteers reached more than 200,000 people through 10 projects in six remote locations. Their efforts provided clean water to more than 20,000 West African villagers; medical assistance to 1,200 people in the Amazon jungle; Christian radio broadcasting to more than 200,000 people in Bolivia and Brazil; community transformation projects to 1,400 Rama Cay people of Nicaragua; and discipleship training to almost 3,000 in Moldova, Papua New Guinea, and Bolivia.
