“Coco” Wins Election For Calf’s Name By Dayna M. Reidenouer
SOL
And now for something completely different: Solanco’s elementary school students have named a calf that was born at Graywood Farms in Peach Bottom. The idea was a collaborative effort between Quarryville Elementary principal Rebecca Gajecki and the Graybeal family of Graywood Farms. Dairy farmer Byron Graybeal is a school board member, and his wife, Carol, is one of the district’s school psychologists. According to Gajecki, the Graybeals suggested the idea of a contest to name the calf. The elementary administrative team, which in addition to Gajecki includes the other elementary principals, Billie Corbin, Providence; Sandra Haines, Bart-Colerain; and Chris Zander, Clermont, approved of the idea. “(We) felt this would be a way to add something Coco, a calf born at Graywood Farms in Peach Bottom, received her name thanks to a contest for Solanco’s elementary students.

few brown Swiss cows too. The price that farmers receive for their milk is based on a complicated formula that factors in the components of the milk and what they are used for. Simply put, higher-fat, higher-protein milk can command a relatively higher price, so adding the richer brown Swiss milk to the greater volume Holstein milk ups the farm’s income. Brown Swiss cows also have an intangible benefit as compared to Holsteins. “The colored breeds have more personality,” Byron remarked. Byron has been providing photos and updates that have been posted on the district’s social media pages. Coco drinks two gallons of milk a day and also receives some grain. Calves are born with teeth on their bottom jaw, and those teeth remain through adulthood; they never grow teeth on their upper jaw. After two months, Coco will be moved from the large hutch where she is living with four other calves and put into a bigger pen with a greater number of calves. There, she will be See Calf pg 2

When Mission Church bought the former Lancaster County Christian School building at 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, in April 2018, the congregation had more than enough room for a sanctuary, children’s ministry classrooms, and staff offices. Launching a food pantry was one of the visions that had been created when looking at the abundant space. When the current crisis hit, church leaders spent time in prayer and determined that now was the right time to turn the vision into a reality. “We stepped out in faith, and things fell into place quickly,” remarked Mission Church senior pastor Jerry Lingenfelter. “The Lord has brought great partners to help us with supplies and the logistical infrastructure to get things moving. While we are thrilled to house the pantry, it is really a full community effort. There are a lot of great organizations in this region and around the
lighthearted to a difficult time period,” Gajecki said. “With all the kids at home, (the princpals) wanted to keep their interest up. This is something (students) can get excited about,” Byron added. The principals asked their students to suggest names, and a total of 43 unique monikers were submitted. From that list, five were selected for the slate: Butterscotch, Brownie, My Corona, Coco, and Butterfly. Gajecki created a survey used for voting, and after all 527 votes were counted, “Coco” was the resounding winner. Coco the calf was officially tagged and named on April 22, nearly a month after her birthday of March 28. Coco now has a tag on each ear: one with her name and the other with her birthday and the number 18. Coco is the 18th brown Swiss heifer to be born at Graywood Farms. Byron explained that while most of the 750 adult cows that produce milk on his farm are black-and-white Holsteins, the herd includes a

Bridge of Hope has been serving families experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Lancaster County for more than 30 years. The organization seeks long-term stability for its clients, so each family receives professional case management services along with tangible and emotional supports from a group of six to eight trained, church-based Neighboring Volunteers. The Neighboring Volunteers have been particularly important during the continuing shutdown, said Anne Dunnenberger, director of outreach. Every family Bridge of Hope Lancaster serves has been impacted by recent events. As it is, families facing or at risk of homelessness - predominantly single mothers with two or three children often struggle to find sustainable employment and reliable transportation. Now, many adults

are answered from Coco’s point of view. “At Solanco, our mission statement is ‘Connecting. Inspiring. Empowering.’ As an elementary team, we felt this project would allow our students to feel connected to our schools and to have something to (anticipate) as they looked for updated videos and pictures,” Gajecki said. “It has been challenging not reporting to the school buildings each day, so the use of social media has allowed us to create small projects for families to be engaged.” Social media users who would like to see updates from Coco and other school projects may follow “Solanco School District” on Facebook and @SolancoSchl Dist on Twitter and Instagram.

switched to a diet of grain and hay. When Coco is about 13 or 14 months old, she will be bred. If all goes well, Coco will have her first calf about 10 months later. She will then join the rest of the adult cows that are milked. Byron said he is open to taking Coco to visit the elementary schools when it is safe to do so in the fall. She might make other public appearances, too. “We’d love it if, eventually, Coco could be at the Solanco Fair and the public could interact directly with her,” Gajecki said. “We aren’t sure if this will be a possibility, but we continue to remain hopeful.” Gajecki also said she wants to offer a “Questions and Answers With Coco” opportunity in which students can submit queries that

WGAL 8 is partnering with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank to launch the Feed Your Neighbors online food drive for those facing extraordinary hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. This effort, which began on April 10, is part of WGAL 8’s ongoing Community Connection initiative to help strengthen communities across the Susquehanna Valley.
The financial contributions through the online fundraising campaign will help ensure people can receive healthy meals, while staying safe in their homes. In the midst of the stayat-home order across the commonwealth and the associated social distancing guidelines, the online food drive offers a way to support those in need. To donate, readers may visit www.wgal.com/community.
Together, we can stop the spread. Are you in? Even as we make strides against COVID-19, it’s not time to let up. Following the proper guidelines remains critical — because that is still the most effective way to slow the spread of the coronavirus. • Stay home as much as you can • Practice social distancing — keep at least 6 feet between yourself and others • Wear a mask in public, covering your nose and mouth • Cover coughs and sneezes • Wash hands often — for at least 20 seconds For a quicker return to the things you love, we need everyone to be in this together. For your family. For your neighbors. For our entire community.
Thank you for being IN.

country and even in Canada who have helped us.” Lingenfelter noted that Mission Church exists to make disciples who are loved and sent to the glory of God. “We believe we are called to preach the Gospel and then live what we preach. Right now, the food pantry is a great way to offer the love of Christ to those in need,” Lingenfelter said. While the state shutdown might have moved up the timeline on the food pantry, the leaders hope to keep it going indefinitely. “In this climate, we are not entirely sure how it will be resourced, but the Lord has already shown us He will provide,” Lingenfelter remarked. “ We will keep pursuing food resources, and we will continue to give it away as we have it.”
Bethesda Mission Outreach in Mechanicsburg helped Mission Church get its food pantry started by donating 14 pallets of nonperishable food and household items, and it is continuing to support the new food pantry. Mission Church has also been able to purchase food from Blessings of Hope in Ephrata, and it aims to buy supplies from Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) as well. Local businesses have contributed to the food pantry with donations and planned food drives. Blessings of Hope and CPFB have also provided advice as Mission Church gets the pantry started. Local and regional nonprofits have been helpful, said Brian Bitler, Mission Church director of operations and strategic advancement. The Lancaster
Food Hub, Mission Central, several local churches, and larger church-based food pantries in Ontario and Arizona have lent their expertise. “They have all been extremely helpful and willing to share information as we all work together to meet real needs in our communities,” Bitler commented. In the first two weeks, Mission Church received requests from more than 175 families, representing more than 800 people. Individuals who consider themselves to have a need may submit requests for food assistance by visiting www.missionchurch.com/foodpantry. Bitler noted that eligibility requirements may be added in the future, but for now, the church wants to aid as many people as possible. After people register, a Mission Church staff member or volunteer will contact them to set up a timeframe for pickup. For safety precautions,
prepacked boxes of food are delivered to vehicles in the church’s parking lot. The boxes contain ingredients to make balanced meals based on nutritional guidelines, Bitler said. A minimal supply of perishable meats and produce is available due to limited freezer and refrigerator space. In addition to food items, the pantry has toilet paper and laundry detergent while supplies last. Members of the public are invited to support the Mission Church Community Food Pantry by donating nonperishable food and household items. Businesses are also welcome to donate products and resources, host food drives, or ask staff members and clients to get involved. Current and priority needs are posted at the aforementioned website. For more information, readers may email foodpantry@mission -church.com or call the church office at 717-393-9600.

shutdown and the threat of the coronavirus has compounded the trauma and stress families facing homelessness already lived with. Dunnenberger shared the story of Carmen, who joined Bridge of Hope last fall after fleeing an abusive relationship. Carmen began working at a local retirement community and was taking classes to become a certified nursing assistant when the stay-at-home orders were issued in March. Suddenly, Carmen was without child care and was forced to reduce her work hours. She is struggling with diminished income, accumulating bills, and taking care of her young daughter in the midst of isolation and despair. Thankfully, Carmen’s Neighboring Volunteers have rallied to provide support.
They have made meals, dropped off groceries, and offered encouragement. Neighboring Volunteers for other families have helped to write resumes, assisted in the completion of essential paperwork, and gathered via Zoom for game nights. They are the helpers: standing on the sidewalk singing “Happy Birthday” to a 6-year-old, helping to find new housing, and calling regularly to make sure a family has what it needs and knows its members are cared for. Like a functional extended family, Neighboring Volunteers offer encouragement, connections, and resources. “Neighboring means connecting creatively; walking in faith, not fear; and helping, not hoarding,”
Dunnenberger said. “If your church is looking to explore new ways to build neighboring relationships with your neighbors who are facing homelessness, Bridge of Hope is here for you.” Individuals may visit www. lancaster.bridgeofhopeinc.org to learn how they can be a part of the Neighboring Volunteer movement. To support families facing homelessness who have been deeply impacted by the current crisis, readers are invited to consider contributing to the Bridge of Hope Coronavirus Response Fund at www.bridge ofhopeinc.org/give. “Now, more than ever, vulnerable communities need Neighboring Volunteers and hope,” Dunnenberger remarked. Sharing Her Gifts Bryanna Still has always loved music. “I began my interest in music at a really young age,” said Bryanna. “I grew up listening to soulful old rhythm and blues and a lot of ’70s and ’80s music. Having that start really inspired me to be passionate about music.” In the fall, the Dayspring Christian Academy senior will head to Edinboro University in northern Pennsylvania to begin a double major in art and music therapy, an ambitious eight-year program that will earn her a doctorate in those subject areas. Bryanna’s journey to this point has not been likely, but her talents, love of art and music, and determination to succeed have helped her discover her potential and have influenced others, such as Diana Vuolo, founder/executive director of SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), to take notice. SWAN is an after-school music program for School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. Readers who would like to learn more about SWAN may visit www.swan4kids.org. While it was not always easy for Bryanna to incorporate music into her life, she found ways to exercise her passion. “When I got the opportunity (I took) music in school,” recalled Bryanna, who listed violin, viola, and recorder among her first instruments. “(When there was) anything to do with hands-on music or singing or performing (offered), I was the first to sign up,” she said. Bryanna attended Price Elementary in SDoL for kindergarten and then moved to Washington Elementary for first grade, where she started playing violin. But from third through fifth grades, Bryanna did not stay

Bryanna Still of Lancaster, a senior at Dayspring Christian Academy, plans to use her musical and artistic talents to help others as she matriculates at Edinboro University in the fall with the goal of becoming an art and music therapist. ended, the teachers she had worked with suggested she be hired as a teacher for the SWAN team, and she began leading group lessons at Price and Lafayette elementary schools. Vuolo noted that the teachers were acutely aware of Bryanna’s character and skill. “Her ability to work with traumatized children and their behavioral and scholastic failures convinced me she will indeed be a great music and art therapist someday,” said Vuolo. Bryanna credits her father, Clifford Still, with helping her to develop her interest in art. Clifford was incarcerated most of Bryanna’s life, and he is now deceased. “My dad would send me letters with drawings, or he would ask me to draw something and send it back. That is how I connected with my father,” Bryanna recalled. “I couldn’t sing to my dad, but I could draw for him, and I wanted to practice my art and get better at it. I wanted my art to be an expression of who I was and to really echo my goals in life.”
Looking ahead, Vuolo believes Bryanna’s past will affect her future in positive ways. “She is a woman of faith and has chosen to … direct the pain of her life to help others,” Vuolo said. “I have witnessed her tremendous successes such as the many times that she has stepped up ... front of audiences to not only perform, but to be an ambassador and spokesperson for the many children affected by parental incarceration and trauma. Her love for others fuels that bravery.”
The Southern End Community Association (SECA), 299 Park Ave., Quarryville, will hold an SOS Flower Sale on Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The “Save Our SECA” event is an effort to help the organization meet its ongoing financial obligations and is just in time for Mother’s Day gift-giving. Gardeners who have thinned their flower beds are asked to pop those extra perennials into pots for the sale. Garden center shoppers may contribute by buying an extra flat of flowers to donate to the cause. All plant donations may be
dropped off at SECA on Friday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to noon or from 5 to 7 p.m. Customers may buy the plants during the sale on May 9. The offerings will be organized according to their needs of sun or shade and will be color-coded for pricing. The sale will be set up in such a way that shoppers will be able to maintain social distancing, and masks must be worn according to state guidelines. For more information about the SOS Flower Sale or to make a contribution to SECA, readers may call Carol Gibson at 717951-8545.

in one place for long. “I bounced around in schools. I couldn’t invest myself in a music class, but I started getting instruments of my own,” she recalled, noting that her neighbors on Green Street in Lancaster offered her old instruments to try or practice on. When she was 10, Bryanna started taking violin lessons and participating in rhythm classes through SWAN. After completing a SWAN event at DoubleTree by Hilton Resort in Willow Street in 2013, Bryanna was waiting for her ride and singing along to “No One” by Alicia Keys as it played over the lobby speaker. According to Bryanna, Vuolo heard the singing and was impressed. “Diana came over and said, ‘ We’re getting you (voice) lessons.’ That’s what started my singing career,” said Bryanna. Vuolo recognized Bryanna’s intelligence as well as her talent, and SWAN helped to secure a scholarship for her to attend Dayspring Christian Academy in Mountville. Vuolo recalled that Bryanna’s grandmother, with whom she had been living, died in 2013 shortly before Bryanna was scheduled to sing the national anthem on the pitcher’s mound of the Barnstormers’ home stadium. The 11-year-old bravely completed the task and six months later soloed with the Dayspring Honors Choir in front of 2,500 people at the school’s Remember America Speaker Series event featuring Dr. Ben Carson. In the summer of 2018, SWAN held a summer camp, which provided 120 hours of instruction to local children. Bryanna was looking for a productive way to spend her summer, and she became a camp volunteer, assisting the teachers. After the SWAN camp

Ministry Brings Milk And More To Those In Need Blessings of Hope (BOH), a wholesale food bank located on Becker Road in Leola, started out small. “We started in 2006 in a little garage in Farmersville,” said David Lapp, a representative of the ministry. The group recognized that food that was being wasted could be used to feed people in Lancaster County and
beyond, and it eventually developed relationships with more than 80 food producers. “We get semi-truck loads of product, and we redistribute to food pantries, outreaches, halfway houses, and ministries,” explained Lapp. “We serve the organizations that serve the people that need the food.” In the last few weeks, the changes wrought by COVID-19

restrictions have affected the ministry in a variety of ways. Most recently, the organization has been contacted by a number of dairy farms with milk to donate. “We had 20 people call in the (first week of April) that had milk for us,” said Lapp, who noted that BOH has connected with a co-operative in Holtwood to receive milk. “They are sending two truckloads a day,” said Lapp during the second week of April. “ We received close to 10,000 gallons of milk that we had pasteurized and bottled and we were able to distribute.” Some of that milk came to CrossNet Ministries in New Holland on April 7. Amy Marburger, food and nutrition manager at CrossNet, was excited to receive 75 gallons. “Kreider Farms (of Manheim) pasteurized and bottled (the milk),” said Marburger, who noted the availability made a big difference for ELANCO-area families. “We are able to double what we give our families in milk this week,” she said. Although BOH is a wholesale food bank, it does distribute food boxes for families in need through a relationship with New Covenant Church of God, 111 E. Chestnut St., Ephrata. Food is distributed at the church every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Over the years, the need for family food boxes has grown, but in recent weeks, the demand has gone up dramatically, according to Lapp. “In October 2010, we committed to providing seven boxes (of food) per week to a local pastor,” recalled Lapp. “On April 4 (this year), we packed 4,500 boxes in one day.” Lapp noted that each box is packed
with 35 to 40 pounds of food, designed to feed a family of four. Among the contents are fruits and vegetables, milk, crackers, chips, and yogurt. “There’s a nice assortment of food going into the boxes,” said Lapp. The organization is also working with employers who have had to lay off their employees to help meet the needs of those who cannot work during the COVID-19 crisis. In addition to the number of boxes being distributed, the way in which the three shifts of 60 to 70 volunteers each handle those boxes has changed as well. Lapp said he spoke with both Congressman Lloyd Smucker and state Sen. Ryan Aument about how to do outreaches during this time without drawing large crowds of people. “(The answer) was to prepack food in a family box and do drive-through-style outreaches where we put a box of food in people’s trunks,” explained Lapp. “We also have a health screening at our building where our volunteers are screened by local EMTs under the direction of a doctor (connected to) WellSpan Hospital,” said Lapp. “We want to keep everybody safe while they’re working here, and if we can control the risk to our volunteers, we can greatly reduce the risk at the outreaches.” The ministry has come a long way since its roots in the threecar garage, moving seven times over the years. “In 2010, we moved to our first warehouse in Ephrata on Trout Run Road,” recalled Lapp. “We had 1,500 square feet, and we felt we had all the space we needed … for about two weeks. Then everything filled up.” The pattern

repeated itself several times. Finally, in August of 2019, BOH purchased a 44,000-square-foot former fruit warehouse near Oregon Dairy. In addition to the local outreach to area churches, BOH sends food to large cities. “We ship to New York City, Baltimore, and Philadelphia nearly every week,” said Lapp. BOH receives donated food in large quantities, but funds are still needed to move the food or prepare it for distribution. “We need cash to process (the milk),” said Lapp. “We could do so much more if the cash was there.” Readers who would like to learn more about BOH may visit www.blessingsofhope.com. Bingo Game Highlights Local Businesses The City of Lancaster Office of Promotion and the Lancaster City Alliance recently released a bingo game to promote a safe and fun way to continue shopping and dining in Lancaster city amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The first of four bingo cards will feature city restaurants that offer takeout; cards are available on the @visitlanccity Instagram account or by emailing LOOP@cityoflancasterpa.com. Participants who want to play bingo and compete for a prize will order takeout or delivery from the eateries listed on the
card to complete a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line across the card to achieve bingo. Participants should photograph themselves enjoying the food or just the food itself. Once they complete a line on the bingo card, participants may submit their completed card and photographs by emailing their photos to LOOP@cityoflancaster pa.com or sending a direct message on Instagram to @visitlanccity with the photos and the marked card attached. Each bingo submitted will be entered into a drawing to receive Downtown Dollars for a
dining experience. More than one entry may be submitted. If there are two bingos on one card, that counts as two entries. One winner will be drawn every two weeks. The first two bingo cards will feature restaurants, and the next two cards will feature city retail shops. The bingo idea came from Provo City, Utah. To plan a visit or for event information, readers may visit www.VisitLancasterCity.com. For more information about Lancaster City Alliance, readers may visit www.lancastercity alliance.org.

Over the past year, the Southcentral Pennsylvania Manufacturing Next Gen Industry Partnership of regional manufacturing leaders created action teams that focused on the most urgent needs identified by the industry. Those include promoting manufacturing careers to grow the future workforce, improving training opportunities for middle-skill and technical occupations, and facilitating businessto-business connections to exchange best practices. The program has expanded in recent years by creating a mentor training program, adding college credit and establishing a high school pre-apprenticeship program to prepare the future skilled workforce. The association currently has more than 80 apprentices from more than 30 companies in its multi-year apprentice training program, which aims to help regional manufacturers create a steady pipeline of skilled workers to meet their needs moving into the future. Giant Supports Local Hunger Relief Efforts To help the fight against hunger during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Giant Company recently announced an additional donation of $250,000 to 18 local hunger relief organizations across its footprint. Each organization will use the funds to help address immediate needs, including supplying food and ensuring critical food delivery to families in need throughout local communities as well as helping offset added operational expenses during this unprecedented time. Local recipient organizations of the Giant Company’s latest donation include Water Street Mission, Lancaster; West Chester Food Cupboard, West Chester; York County Food Bank, York; and Helping Harvest Food Bank, Reading. Last month, the Giant Company announced a donation of $250,000 to four local hunger relief organizations. These include Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Philabundance, Maryland Food Bank and Meals on Wheels Pennsylvania. In addition, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn State Children’s Hospital, the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital at Geisinger, Children’s National Hospital and Johns Hopkins Children’s Center each received $50,000 to support COVID-19 mitigation efforts. Customers looking to join the Giant Company and support hunger relief efforts can round up their purchase at self-checkout to the nearest dollar, with funds benefiting regional food banks.
