Take A Walk Through Post Prom By Dayna M. Reidenouer

While Solanco High School seniors and their guests are attending prom at Deerfield in Newark, Del., their parents and other volunteers will be finishing up the final touches to post prom and opening the venue to the public for an open house. Prom will be held on Saturday, May 18, and post prom will take place at the high school, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville, from 11 p.m. until 3 a.m. on Sunday, May 19. The public is invited to tour the setup from 7 to 9 p.m. on May 18. The organizers hope that walking

through the venue will inspire awe in community members and get them excited about future post proms. “Most people who have never seen post prom are stunned,” related 2019 post prom committee treasurer Lesley Shaw. The committee has gone to great lengths to create an attractive event that Solanco seniors will want to attend rather than going to private parties. “The two highest risk nights for teens are after prom and graduation,” said co-chair Christine Schneider. “The purpose of post prom is to provide a free, safe, substance-free, and fun venue for seniors and their guests, including those who do not See Solanco Post Prom pg 2

attend the prom.” Schneider noted that programs will be distributed to those who attend the open house, and everyone who has contributed to the event will be listed in the programs. “Post prom would not happen without countless volunteers, parents, and local businesses,” Schneider remarked. “Their support is so critical.” The post prom committee has created a highly detailed plan for post prom, beginning with a secret theme and the transformation of significant portions of the school building. “So much of it is the ‘wow’ the decorations are such a huge part of the experience,” said cochair Lorrie Yaletchko. A wide variety of activities have also been scheduled. The gymnasium will be filled with giant inflatables. There will be games of all sorts, crafts, entertainment, and a whole lot of food. “This is their last hurrah before graduation,” Schneider said. “The highlight of the night is at 2:30 a.m., when all seniors attending the prize ceremony are eligible to receive a prize. Plus, the more the seniors participate, the more chances they will have to win a grand prize such as a $250 gift card, a laptop computer, or a kayak.” Post prom is made possible through the volunteer and fundraising efforts of senior parents, family members, local businesses, and the community. Although several fundraisers were held, the post prom committee is still accepting cash and prize donations. Additionally, as the committee has three 40-foot trailer loads of items to load into the school and set up, volunteers are welcome to assist. Setup will take place on Friday, May 17, from 3 to 11 p.m. For more information, readers may email Shaw at lshaw@akerley.net, call Schneider at 717-940-0976, or visit www.solancopostprom.org.

The first two will be held at Martic Store, 561 Martic Heights Drive, Holtwood, on Saturdays, May 11 and June 8, and two more are slated for the fall. The proceeds from the day will help to meet the needs of a local resident. “Someone in our community needs help with hospital bills after a lengthy stay,” said Martic Pantry board member Sharon Aukamp. The proceeds from the June 8 and later barbecue sales will go to the Martic Pantry, whose purpose is to show God’s love by providing

food and other assistance to residents of Martic Township who are experiencing hardship. “Our main focus is to provide free groceries, but we do our best to help out with other emergencies when we can,” Aukamp explained. Martic Pantry typically serves between 15 and 20 families each month, giving each qualified household a debit card that may be used only at Martic Store. The cards are reloaded each month with an amount based on family size. “There are families in great need who just can’t make (ends) meet without something miraculous, but Martic Pantry provides something to help them get a little closer,” said Martic Pantry vice president Dave Gochnauer. “Our hope is to help people get back on their feet and not need us. It’s neat that a number of people no longer need the help.” Gochnauer related that some Martic Pantry clients have turned in their debit cards after finding work that improved their financial conditions.

SATURDAY, MAY 11 • 10am-3pm

“We’re excited for their success,” Aukamp said. She noted that in December, Martic Pantry received a large donation of small toys and other items. A family that had received firewood to heat their home through Martic Pantry brought their children to help to sort the donations. One of the parents now has a full-time job, and they wanted to give back to the organization. “It’s encouraging,” Aukamp remarked. Some of the toys were given to Martic Elementary School teachers to use in their classrooms. Other toys were offered to Martic Pantry families and clients of the Kitchen Cupboard at neighboring Mount Nebo United Methodist Church, who were invited to pick from the collection for Christmas presents for their children. “Martic Pantry is community helping community,” Gochnauer said. The number of clients served is dependent on donations and fundraisers. The organization welcomes donations from local businesses, churches, and individuals. Folks who would like to learn more may call Martic Store at 717-923-0561, find “Martic Pantry” on Facebook, or email marticpantry@gmail.com. Pictured on front:

car show. The chapter will also operate a concession stand, where it will sell burgers, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, baked goods, and beverages. The Manor FFA Alumni Association will sell chicken barbecue. The proceeds from the concession stand and the sale of Tshirts will benefit chapter activities, such as sending FFA members to attend state and national conventions and other educational events. The committee reported that approximately 25 students will compete in teams

and several individuals will participate as delegates or state officer candidates at the State FFA Convention at Penn State University in June. Typically, the chapter pays for some of the costs, and the individual members pay for the rest, Chalfant said. Interest in planning for the car show has increased significantly, going from a committee of only three last year to more than 20 this year. Some folks were in charge of writing sponsor letters, while others worked on ordering T-shirts

and redesigning the layout of the event. “We’re trying to expand and make it better, committee member Cody Hurlburt said. All the committee members are slated to wear mint green staff T-shirts at the event, and folks who need assistance may query any of the staffers. Although it is too late for business and individual names to be included on the event T-shirts, sponsorships for the event are still available. forgetfulness is normal. When memory loss disrupts everyday life, however, that is indicative that Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia may be developing. A decline in thinking and reasoning skills is also a red flag, and folks should see their doctor. Group member Mary Read has dubbed herself an Alzheimer’s ambassador, as she has been dealing with the early onset of these symptoms. Frazier noted that the disease is such that the diagnosis cannot be confirmed until after death. In living people, diagnosis is made based on cognitive testing. “It’s a very grueling process, Frazier said. Information about Alzheimer’s disease will be available at the Grand Purple Gala. The Grand Purple Gala was created by Julie Ehrgood and Frazier, both of whom have family members with Alzheimer’s. They were joined by additional women whom the disease has affected in some way. Frazier’s personal experience with Alzheimer’s came from her grandfather and her work as a nurse in memory care facilities. “I wanted to do something that had an impact, Frazier said. “I did a lot of education with families. It’s an exhausting disease. Relating an incident during which her grandfather slipped out of the house tremendously underdressed for the cold weather, she added, “It’s scary. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, as folks age, some

Mules Cap League Play With 7 Straight Wins by Mona Steinhauer

The baseball team hit seven straight wins last week going 4-4 with a Saturday night shutout over Donegal. The week included locking up both a district berth, their first since 2012, and a spot in the League Playoffs, which get underway this Saturday.

Ephrata jumped in front with a two out, two run single in the first inning. Solanco quickly responded with three. Kreider singled, Harnish reached on an error and May, who later scored on a Murray base hit, drove them in with a double to left. Solanco scored what proved to be the game winning run the following inning when Fetterman tripled home Harnish, who singled in front of him. The Mounts got one back in the top of the third but failed to score again. “Turns out four runs was enough,” said Fish. “We faced their ace pitcher for the second time, but this time we made him work for every out. We had quality at bat, after quality at bat. Stively battled through four innings, striking out seven and walking three to get the win. Kreider pitched in relief and recorded three strikeouts, including one to end the game with a runner on. “Harder to find a tougher three inning save than that one,” Fish stated. TRACK While the track teams have struggled to put up team wins, their individual successes have been evident by the number of personal records set every week. Last Monday the squads traveled to Lebanon and came out on the short end of two tightly contested meets. The girls’, with six PR’s on the day, failed to win a single relay and suffered an 85-63 loss while the boys’, despite ten event wins and over 11 PR’s, fell short in depth and lost an 80-70 result. “The girls, as they say, got the wind knocked out of their sails,” stated head coach Ivan Haines. “They only came away with six PR’s, their lowest of the season. And it is hard to come back from losing all the relays.” Bright spot of the day was a three win performance by Aleska Burger. The senior jumped her way to firsts in the long (14-10) and triple (31-4) and sprinted to a winning 29 seconds flat in the 200m dash. Alana Yoder, a junior, added firsts in the 100 (13.5) and 400 (1:01) while Troyanna Miller secured Solanco’s Photo by Mona Steinhauer final event win of the day with her Photo by Mona Steinhauer Solanco’s Dawson Kreider throws to first to complete the personal best in the discus, 106 feet. “It’s always special to play at the Clipper Magazine Stadium,” said head coach Tom Fish. “In addition to the game, we played for a great cause. Together with Donegal (and according to WGAL) over $1000 was raised for the Challenger Kids, a non-profit organization started in Quarryville that allows kids with disabilities to play baseball. Many of those kids were at the game and joined our team on the field for the National Anthem.” Solanco took a one run lead in the top of the third and broke the game open with four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings en route to a 9-0 shutout over the Indians. Tom Fetterman sparked the Mules’ 13 hit attack with three hits, three runs and three RBI’s. Mike May added a clutch two run double in the fifth inning and John Murray added RBI

singles in the fifth and sixth innings. “Hayden Fox pitched a gem,” lauded Fish. “He threw a complete game shutout on 57 pitches with four strikeouts, no walks and only two hits allowed.” The Mules were coming off a 2-1, Friday night upset thriller over Section Two champ L-S. The Pioneers defeated Solanco 11-1 back on April 9. The visitors jumped in front early this time, scoring their only runs in the second inning. Mike May opened the inning with a leadoff homer and Sam Buckwalter’s base hit to right field scored Joel McGuire who reached on a walk. Solanco left the bags loaded in the fourth and L-S cut the lead in half with one run in the bottom of the fifth. “The story of the game was the two guys that competed on the mound, and the fine defense we played behind them,” said Fish. “Grady Unger got his first varsity start

of the season and pitched into the fourth, holding L-S to one run. He gave up one long hit an inning, but it didn’t hurt us because we didn’t walk many batters and made all the plays. Defensively, Buckwalter, McGuire, Murray and behind the plate, Zack Fritz, really stood out, each making fine plays that helped us keep the lead and momentum,” he continued. “We then brought Dawson Kreider in and he went the rest of the way, officially four innings, no runs, four strikeouts and one walk. Once we got out of a jam in the fourth, he did a nice job. He closed out our two biggest wins, both this week. “And Seth Harnish caught a gameending foul ball running into the fence down the left field side and the dugout went nuts,” Fish added. The Mules opened the week with a come-from-behind, 6-4 win over CV at home on Monday. The Bucks scored two in the first inning but Solanco responded in the bottom half and never looked back. Kreider and Harnish walked. Tim Fetterman’s base hit knocked in Kreider and May followed with a two run shot that put the Mules in front for good, 3-2.

They made it 5-2 with two in the second. Kreider drew another walk and scored on another May single and Murray singled home May. CV made things interesting with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings but couldn’t grab the lead. Solanco’s final run came in the sixth when Fetterman singled home Kreider, who doubled. “Hayden Fox, who got the win, reached his pitch count limit in the seventh,” Fish recalled. “We put in Corey Stively, clinging to a 6-3 lead. After CV plated one run, they loaded the bases with the score 6-4. Their cleanup hitter drove a ball to deep right center and, with the game in balance, Tim made a running catch.” Tim and Mike each had two hits and Dawson reached base three times and scored three runs, noted Fish. Because of Solanco’s win over CV and Ephrata’s loss to L-S, Wednesday’s Solanco-Ephrata matchup in Quarryville was for second place and a trip to the League Playoffs. The Mules prevailed, 4-3, with another come-from-behind result. “This was the biggest game we have played at home in my nine years coaching here,” lauded Fish.

The Bucks, however, controlled the last four innings, outscoring the Mares 4-2 but they weren’t able to take the lead. “Hanna (Phillips) threw well enough for us to win,” said Miller. “But she’s still trying to get stronger.
