Family In Need After Fire

Serving The Community At Swift Middle School BY COURTNEY MENGEL

n late December, Swift Middle School art teacher Melissa Tucker went to The Daily Grind in Quarryville. After Tucker placed a large to-go order, the staff notified her that they had run out of drink carriers. Due to the pandemic, many people were ordering takeout, so there was a high demand for drink carriers. A staff member provided Tucker with a carrier that was not meant for beverages, but it did the trick. Soon after, Tucker decided to create a service project for her students that would benefit The Daily Grind. “We saw a need and wanted to do something about it,” said Tucker. “I wanted to give the kids something different to do that’s a connection to outside of the building because everything we’ve been doing has Swift Middle School technology education teacher Derrick Kreider (far left) and student teacher Vivian Feliciani (far right) oversee the work of seventh-graders (from second from been so secluded.” Tucker saw this project as the per- left) Logan Colebaugh, Mason Houghton, Mason Carpenter, Destiny Vansant, Mikayla fect opportunity to collaborate with Stanton, Kaitlyn Fulton, and Courtney Wolfe. other classes at Swift Middle School. On March 12, the McCullough family members were making dinner in their home in Providence Township. Denise asked her son, Logan, to heat oil on the stove for fries. She then went outside to help her husband, David, in the yard. After turning on the stovetop, Logan went into the bathroom to take a bath. Without anyone knowing, the oil caught fire. David came back to the house, and when he walked through the front door, he saw the kitchen clouded in smoke and covered by flames. Their dog, Katie, was sitting on the basement steps barking at the door to the bathroom where Logan was. David ran through the flames and carried his son outside to safety. Today, Denise, David, Logan, and Katie are making do with what they have. The kitchen was destroyed and there is water damage throughout the house. Retro Road Trip: PA’s Drive-In Movie Theaters WENDY ROYAL

There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. But the essence of the drive-in experience hasn’t changed in more than 70 years - waiting for the sun to go down, the smell of freshly popped popcorn and making memories with family and friends. My own memories include taking in a movie with a carload of friends when I was a teenager and then going back to the Columbia Drive-In (no longer in operation) as a young mom with my husband and our children watching from the open hatchback of our car. of Promotion (LOOP) will host its 45th annual Red Rose Run. This year’s race will be virtual, and participants can complete their 5 miles in one continuous route or over the course of four days from June 3 to Sunday, June 6. Participants will have the option to walk or run the race and can submit their times for a chance to win awards. Organizers will email the winners once they have been determined. T-shirts will be included in registration, which is currently open. This will be the fourth year that proceeds benefit Lancaster Central Market. When asked why people should participate in the race, Dani Decker, communications manager at Central Market, said, “Because it allows Central Market to continue operating and to continue to be a source of fresh food for Lancaster city and the surrounding counties.” Although there are for profit businesses within the market, Central Market is run by a nonprofit. Events such as Red Rose Run help Central Market with outreach,

This year, LOOP put together six different course options for those local to Lancaster. “Since the race is virtual, you can run it anywhere, but we put together these options to help guide people,” said Annie Weeks, director of LOOP. “It’s been a hard year for so many people, and this

“Horses reflect our emotions, while at the same time they seem to know how to give us exactly what we need to soothe our pain,” professional cutting horse trainer Barbra Schulte is credited as saying. This belief is one of the reasons that United States Army veteran Sara Hodgkiss transformed her family’s farm into an equine-assisted therapy organization. Woerth It Hollow, 269 Cooper Drive, Kirkwood, was purchased by Hodgkiss’ mother, Dorothy Woerth, in 1983. Together, Dorothy and Hodgkiss’ father, Greg, worked to renovate and maintain the farm. After serving in the Army, Hodgkiss worked through many personal problems. She later found horses that needed a second chance, so she decided to rehabilitate them and use them for a veteran and disabled therapy program. Hodgkiss created Woerth It Hollow to continue her legacy of service and help her fellow brothers and sisters in arms to be a part of this mission.

“I thought I had found my niche at a stable that turned out to be an ill fit for me,” said one of the veterans in the program. The veteran contacted Hodgkiss and Hodgkiss invited her to be part of the program at Woerth It Hollow. Before riding horseback, participants focus on groundwork, which includes grooming and guiding horses through their paces while standing beside them. This method establishes a bond and trust between the person and the horse. “Our goal is for the volunteers, disabled, and veterans to run the program,” said Hodgkiss. “I like to let them share their knowledge and skills, and if they can help other horses and people beyond the farm, then that’s more than I’ve ever dreamed of.” There is no cost for military veterans or disabled individuals to participate in the program. “Veterans like myself are too tough to work on ourselves, but we will work on a horse,” stated John Beachel, horsemanship trainer and United States Army veteran. “A byproduct of working on the horse is working on ourselves. Hodgkiss said Woerth It Hollow is in desperate need of donations, equipment, facility repairs, and modifications to make the farm handicappedaccessible. “People with wheelchairs,

walkers, and crutches need to be able to move around the farm on their own,” noted Beachel. “We don’t have the right terrain for that.” “But we make it work,” Hodgkiss said. “ We have enough volunteers that nobody needs to be turned away ever.” Readers who are interested in supporting Woerth It Hollow or participating in its programs may contact Hodgkiss at woerthithollow@gmail.com or 717-682-6976 or visit www.woerthithollow.net.

Stella came to Woerth It Hollow in June 2017.

Horsemanship trainer John Beachel has been working in the industry for 40 years.

All of the windows will need to be replaced.

“We really want to drum up support for this family,” said Diedrich. “They’ve done so much for others and deserve some assistance.” Over the years, the McCullough family has provided room and board to teenagers who needed a place to stay. “One of the kids made us a sign that says, ‘McCullough halfway house,’” said David. “Pretty much every single one who went through here left better than when they entered.” Those interested in making a monetary donation can visit http://bit.ly/McCullough Fundraiser. Those interested in donating supplies or helping the McCullough family with renovations may contact either Denise at 717 -823-2026 or David at 717823-2025.

need to be replaced. On April 22, the electric was turned on and the bathroom was cleaned. The family’s only source of running water is in the bathroom; Denise has been washing dishes in the bathtub. The McCullough family’s neighbors have been very supportive. “ We provided meals for them for the whole month of April because they had no way to cook,” said Joanne Diedrich. “This neighborhood is like a family.” David purchased discounted appliances and cabinets from Lowe’s and was also to receive a new door. The McCulloughs have been living in their basement because the upstairs is unlivable. David and Denise have their own room while Logan has been sleeping on the couch.

Britigan walked, Sims singled and Grube plated the first run of the inning on a base hit. One out later, Eshleman crushed a three-run triple, closing the scoring for both teams. The day before, Solanco collected its fourth shutout of the year, a 19-0, threeinning victory in Lebanon. Everyone batted and scored in the first inning for a 9-0 lead. Grube had the hot

Their marathon play continued with last Monday’s 18-5 loss to Section One leader Warwick. “We scored against a quality pitcher,” said Miller. “They’re a good hitting team.” Tied at 1-1 in the first, Warwick, with 17 hits on the day, including four home runs, gained some breathing room with five runs in the second and then pulled away with six runs in the sixth and seventh innings. The going didn’t get easier Tuesday when Solanco traveled to Penn Manor, the second-place team in Section One and, for the first time this season, was shut out 11-0. “We’re a young team and we’re gaining experience,” said Miller. “We have to develop and overall, we are. We are more consistent in each position, but we still don’t have a consistent lineup. And our pitchers need pitches. Haupt threw well against Warwick and Anna Sexton was back in the lineup. Individually, we’re making some tough plays.” Despite the loss to Penn Manor, Solanco loaded the bases in their last at bat. “We gave ourselves the opportunity to score,” said Miller. “We need to maintain consistency. The girls are working hard and we’re looking to keep improving.” BASEBALL Solanco’s playoff season continues as every game now plays a significant role in their attempt to qualify for leagues and districts. Friday, May 7 they took another step in the right direction, hanging a 9-8 loss on Elizabethtown. In a back-and-forth battle from the start, the Mules took a 2-0 lead in the first. Austin Wenger singled, Nate Harnish reached on a fielder’s choice, and both scored on a Nate Miller double. They picked up another run in the second when Wenger singled in Ronnie Fulton. Wenger went 2-3 with two singles, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. The Bears, however, roared back with four in the bottom of the second and held the lead for the majority of the game. E-town led 4-3, then 5-3, then 5-4 and 6-4 and 6-5 before two runs in the bottom of the sixth made it 8-5. “It wasn’t looking good,” said Fish. “The rain was falling, and field conditions were getting worse by

the minute. But we rallied, battling in the seventh to save our season.” Wenger started with a leadoff walk, and Seth Harnish singled to center field. Brother Nate followed with another single to right, setting the stage for Nate Miller. “Nate took a fastball deep over the fence for what turned out to be a game winning, seventh inning, three run homer,” said Fish in excitement. “What an awesome moment for Nate and the team. It was the moment of our season.” Miller went 3-3 with a double, single, sac fly and the three-run homer, good for six RBI’s in all. On the hill, Ethan Clary earned the win in relief. He struck out four, including the side in the seventh. “Ethan got out of a jam in the sixth to keep things close and pitched that pressure packed seventh,” said Fish. “Seth Harnish started and got the no decision. He battled. It was not an easy day to pitch or field with a steady rain throughout. “This is a game none of us will soon forget,” he added. “It was a heroic day by Mr. Miller!” In non-league play Tuesday, Solanco dropped a 6-3 decision against Exeter despite holding a 3-1 lead. TRACK The track teams wrapped up the regular season on a positive note last Monday on the road. The girls’ team earned their first win of the year with a solid 97-53 win over Lebanon while the boys improved to 4-3 with an 82-68 result. “It was a great dual meet,” said head coach Jen McDowell. “The girls’ 4x400 relay was an exciting one, coming from behind in the

third leg to pull off the win.” That relay featured Alana Brown, Jadan Forren, Halle Brown and Kara Peace. Solanco also claimed the 4x800 (Emma Baxter, Christine Wagner, Brown and Brown) and the 4x100 (Faith Roth, Sophia Stoltzfus, Haylee Byers and Carly Rose) for a 15-point sweep. Individually, Katie Urbine was the top point-getter with firsts in the 100, 200, long and pole vault. Greta Plechner won the 300 hurdles, was second in the high and third in the pole vault. Wagner took the 3200, Baxter was tops in the mile, Rose won the 110 hurdles and Peace led a sweep in the 400 with H. Brown and Forren taking second and third. Other field highlights included

Hannah Wood with seconds in the shot, discus and javelin. The boys’ meet was a bit closer and came down to the javelin. “We swept the javelin with Lance Workman, Brian Coleman and Connor Smith,” said McDowell. “And we got big jumps from Elijah Reimold (first) and Josiah Forren (second) in the long jump. Plus, almost all the distance runners had PR’s.” Reimold completed a hat trick with wins in the triple and high jumps while Trent McDowell added a double, claiming both hurdle events. The boys also won the 4x400 (Ian Althoff, Liam Findley, Aidan Wood and Forren) and the 4x100 (Jimmy Morales, Kendal, Wood and Riley Ford). Althoff won the open 400 and Wyatt Tomison was the 3200 winner.

applicants by FSA and include both farm operating and farm ownership loans. Repayment terms for direct operating loans depend on the collateral securing the loan; loans usually run from one to seven years, but can be as long as 40 years. The down payment loan program requires the applicant to provide a minimum down payment of 5% in cash, and there is a limit on the monetary amount of the loan. The loan term may not exceed 20 years. A variety of projects may be funded through farm ownership and farm operating loans, such as purchasing or enlarging a farm, erecting or improving buildings, purchasing livestock or equipment, refinancing debts, and securing medical care. Individuals, partnerships, joint operations, corporations, and cooperatives primarily and directly engaged in farming and ranching on family-size operations may apply. A family-size farm is considered to be one that a family can operate and manage itself. Guaranteed loans also may be made for ownership or operating purposes and may be made by any lending institution subject to federal or state supervision. For full details, contact the local FSA Office at 405 W. Market St., Middleburg, PA 17842 or 570-837-0007.

The USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) serving Lancaster County reminded producers recently that FSA has funding reserved specifically for use by targeted underserved groups and beginning farmers. These loan programs are designed to help farmers purchase and operate family farms. With these loan programs, FSA hopes to help reverse the declining number of farmers and ranchers across the United States and especially in Lancaster County. These loans aim to encourage and assist people in owning and operating their own farms and ranches, participating in agricultural programs, and becoming integral parts of the agricultural community. FSA reserves a portion of its loan funds each year for targeted underserved groups. USDA defines a targeted underserved farmer as one of a group whose members have been subjected to racial, ethnic, or gender prejudice because of their identity as members of the group without regard to their individual qualities. For purposes of this program, targeted underserved groups are women, African Americans, Native Americans and Alaskan Natives, Hispanics, and Asians and Pacific Islanders. Both direct loans and down payment loans are available. Direct loans are made to

Stem To Assume Role At IU13 The Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13) board of directors recently appointed Matthew Stem of Lancaster as the new assistant executive director, effective Monday, June 14. Stem currently serves as the deputy secretary of elementary and secondary education for the Pennsylvania Department of Education, a position he has held since 2015. In Stem’s new role at IU13, he will support the strategic vision and work of the executive direc-

tor’s office, as well as the growth of aspiring leaders within IU13 and schools across the commonwealth. Stem has over 22 years of experience as a teacher, principal, district-level administrator, and assistant superintendent. Nineteen of those years were spent with the School District of Lancaster and three were spent at the Wyomissing Area School District in Reading. While with the state Department of Education, Stem was

instrumental in the development of the Future Ready PA Index and the Every Student Succeeds Act Consolidated Plan, served as liaison to the State Board of Education Council of Basic Education, provided testimony before the General Assembly Education Committees on budget and finance matters, expanded the State System of Support funding and activities within the Pennsylvania Association of Intermediate Units, led the process for developing com-

puter science standards, and created a Division of Charter Schools to provide technical assistance and increased accountability to Pennsylvania charter schools, as well as leading other statewide initiatives. Stem holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Millersville University. He has a master’s degree in educational administration from Temple University, in addition to a Pennsylvania Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility.

Staged Reading Of New Musical Set Servant Stage will present a staged reading of a new, original musical called “Prodigal” by composer and playwright Tyler D. Hoover. Performances will take place at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 21; 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 22; and 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 23. The show will also be available to watch online from Friday, May 28, through Sunday, June 13. The community is invited to attend and be part of the development process of this musical. A limited number of tickets for the in-person performances are available to the public. COVID-19 policies that will be in place include limiting the audience capacity to allow for social distancing and wearing face coverings at all times, per state health guidelines. Hoover is a Lancaster-based composer with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music theory and composition from West Chester University. “Prodigal” is the first full-length musical he has created. The musical is loosely based on the parable of the Prodigal Son found in Luke 15. Hoover said he was looking to find a familiar story that could be retold in an innovative way.

The presentation features a cast of 23 local performers, led by Robert Bigley, Zachary Fernback, Caleb Hughes, and Reji Woods in featured roles. The presentations will also include a question-and-answer and talk-back session with Hoover, director Wally Calderon, and cast members after each performance. All performances are offered at pay-what-you-will prices, and tickets for both the in-person performances and online streaming must be reserved in advance by visiting www.servantstage.org or by calling 717-455-0255.

Historical Society Posts Bike Tour Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) will host a local history bike tour on the Warwick Ephrata Rail Trail (WERT) on Saturday, June 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Participants should gather at Ephrata’s trailhead at Fulton Street and Railroad Avenue by 9:15 a.m. In the case of rain, the tour will take place on Sunday, June 6. Tour leader and LMHS board member John Weber will guide the group from Ephrata to Lititz on the WERT, which follows the abandoned Reading and Columbia railroad constructed in 1863 at the outset of the Civil War. The five-stop bike tour will include the Jacob Huber house, where Moravian leader Count Zinzendorf tried to unite all Pennsylvania Germans through his preaching. Another stop focuses on the Hess Homestead, which dates to 1734. The late Clarke Hess restored this property, and a number of his well-documented and rare material culture artifacts are now part of LMHS’ collections. There is a fee to participate. Register at http://bit.ly/Bike WERT by Friday, May 28.
