Lancaster EMS Moms Receive Flowers And More By Ann Mead Ash

Marisa Seubert, marketing and development coordinator with Lancaster EMS, knew that many of the emergency medical services families could not be together on Mother’s Day. Thinking about that inspired her to consider what could be done for mothers this year. By partnering with Worship Center and Whole Foods Market, Seubert was able to make Mother’s Day special for some of the organization’s first responders. On May 10 at 9 a.m., Seubert and Lancaster EMS board member Dick Moriarty picked up bouquets of flowers at Whole Foods. Each bouquet was See Lancaster EMS pg 7

Members of Lancaster EMS staff who are mothers and who worked on Mother’s Day received flowers and gift cards from Worship Center and Whole Foods Market. Mothers at the East Lampeter Station that day included Jess C. (second from left) and Jess W. (second from right), who shared a shift with Alexis D. (far left) and Alexa M. (far right).

May 17-23 Here are a few ways to say thank you:

It is purely coincidental that the name of Joe Yurick’s business - JDog Junk Removal & Hauling - begins with his first initial. “It was started by Jerry Flanagan. His nickname in the Army was JDog,” Yurick explained. Yurick opened his own franchise of JDog because he had served in the military and he wanted to help other veterans. “There are about 250 franchises,” Yurick said. “(At an information meeting), I immediately fell in love with the mission. Right now, I have three (military) generations in the truck.” Truck commander Mark Lukanski served in the Army’s infantry in Operation Desert Storm. Yurick, who titles himself a “vetrepreneur,” achieved the rank of specialist in the Army’s air

defense artillery, working on the Patriot missile system. He served in operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Giovanni Rivera, the team’s junk removal specialist, is currently serving in the Army National Guard. “No matter who our clientele is, we have someone who can relate to them,” Yurick commented. While the JDog organization is focused on helping veterans with their employment needs, it hires its services to everyone. Yurick takes great pride in the emphasis on repurposing and recycling castoffs. “We do everything we can to keep things out of the landfill,” Yurick said. “Anytime that we pick up items we can repurpose (we save them). We know there are memories associated with them, (and we want to respect them).” Yurick noted that he has contacts at See Veteran-Owned Business pg 6

Friendship employs almost 400 team members whose roles range from direct support professionals and nurses to behavioral specialists and art instructors, as well as a full complement of administrative staff members. As a result of the shutdown, the day programs - including the Friendship Heart Gallery studio and Meaningful Day Academy were immediately closed. Instead of Friendship’s clients spending time together in one place, each individual had to stay in his or her respective home. This resulted in staff members having to provide around-the-clock care at each home, when they had not previously done that, and that prompted schedule changes, flexibility, and creativity. Friendship Community also formed an urgent response team to prepare for the possibility of illness. Team members made sure to maintain direct contact with clients, clients’ families, and government authorities at all levels, and they also implemented protocols to keep everyone safe. Friendship CEO Gwen Schuit, BSN, M.Ed., NHA, credited two sewing circles - Sewing Hope, a group associated with Worship Center, and Birdin-Hand Fabric - with providing cloth masks for Friendship’s staff members and clients. clients asked Yurick and his team to keep an eye out for a certain set of dolls that she had not seen for 30 years, and she rejoiced when the men found it. Yurick graduated from Octorara High School in 2000. He lives in Parkesburg with his family and operates his business from there. His JDog franchise’s service area includes all of southern Lancaster County, extends into Chester County, and ranges as far north as Narvon and New Holland. Yurick is a board member for both the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and the Oxford Area Chamber of Commerce, and he is the junior vice commander of the Parkesburg VFW. During the annual Covenanter Scottish Festival and Highland Games, the JDog franchise sponsors the gravesite of a deceased veteran buried in the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church cemetery. As a part of the Parkesburg Area Business Association, JDog participates in Final Fridays, with Yurick often helping with setup. Yurick is a founding member of Golf Yankee 6, an organization named for the military phrase “Got your 6,” which means “got your back,” and created to support veterans who own businesses. Golf Yankee 6 is based out of Oxford, but it is open to people from anywhere. Interested individuals can find Golf Yankee 6 on Facebook. For more information about Yurick and the JDog services, readers may call 484-467-1424 or visit www.facebook.com/JDog SouthernLancasterCounty.

the Coatesville VA, and he gets in touch when something comes up that a veteran might need. Earlier this year, he donated a dining room table and chairs to a VA client. Additionally, a storage unit contains interesting odds and ends. Yurick pays attention to local message boards and steps up to help when possible, often finding the requested item in storage. Recently, the team delivered a dryer to an Oxford family that could not afford one. As its name states, JDog offers removal and hauling services. “We do everything from single-item pickups to estate cleanouts,” Yurick said. “We do the work so you don’t have to.” While JDog can handle projects like storage shed demolitions, the business is not certified to collect asbestos, mercury, and other hazardous materials or flammable items such as propane tanks. JDog falls under the waste collection umbrella, so it has continued to operate during the shutdown. Yurick noted that the business offers contact-free collection when clients are able to take their items outside for pickup. When team members need to enter clients’ homes or other buildings, the workers wear personal protective equipment, including masks and booties. Team members are also careful about sorting through items before they are placed in the trailer. Yurick related that at the beginning of May, his JDog team emptied the attic of a couple that could no longer make the trip up the steep stairs. One of the

paired with a prayer note and a gift card donated by members of Worship Center, and then the flowers were delivered to the Lancaster EMS station located at 1829 Lincoln Highway East, where some of the staff members who are mothers were working that day. Seubert explained that Lancaster EMS staff members work 12-hour shifts, and Mother’s Day was no exception. The mothers working at the 6-1 East Lampeter Station were Jess W., a lieutenant and paramedic; Amanda M., a captain and paramedic; and Jess C., in the communications center. Paramedic Vickie M. worked that day at the 6-3 Columbia Avenue Station. EMT Megan H. worked at the 56-12 Willow Valley Station, while paramedic Lee Ann H. worked at the 56-4 Buck station. EMT Lynda L. and EMT Lisa R. worked at the 56-5 Quarryville station, and EMT Joellen P. worked at the 56-6 Strasburg station. Worship Center global and local outreach pastor Chris Lautsbaugh said that the church has been specifically looking for ways to assist people and organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lautsbaugh said that a member of the church who is a first responder was able to help to connect the church with emergency medical personnel who were quarantined and in need of meals. The church also developed a COVID-19 fund that has been used to help food pantries and

other providers such as Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services and Blessings of Hope. “Through a series of events, we were connected with Lancaster EMS,” said Lautsbaugh, who added that because the EMS staff members are frontline workers, church representatives felt a desire to support them. Lautsbaugh noted that support includes prayer, pastoral and/or chaplain care should it be requested, and practical ways the church could be there for the EMTs and their families. “They have been embracing us,” said Seubert. “They said, ‘Let’s give some flowers.’” Nathan Copson, store manager at the Lancaster Whole Foods location, said that Whole Foods Market is committed to supporting local communities. “I’m glad that we have a chance to help celebrate the hard-working mothers of Lancaster EMS and show our appreciation for their service,” he noted. Lautsbaugh pointed out that he is glad Lancaster EMS staff members, who are frontline heroes, can experience a sense of support from Worship Center. “We would love to be able to serve all frontline workers, but since that is not possible, this gives us a way to do for some what we wish we could do for

Aaron’s Acres Finds Permanent Home In Manheim By Ann Mead Ash

In 2018, Aaron’s Acres celebrated 20 years of providing socialization and recreation for children and young adults ages 5 to 21 with special needs. The nonprofit organization held camp at the Jewish Community Center in Lancaster until 2013. Starting in 2014, the program was hosted by the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park. In 2019, the six-week camp served 220 campers. For the past several years, Aaron’s Acres has been searching for a permanent home. Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, had looked at a number of county locations, but nothing suitable had been found. “We really wanted to be part of an inclusive community,” recalled Paskoff. “We didn’t want … an entire building to ourselves.” In the past year, Paskoff began talking to Jonathan Hollinger, executive director of Pleasant View Retirement Community, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. The retirement community plans to build a cultural center on the Hoffer Farm property across from the memory care and skilled nursing care facilities on

North Penryn Road. Pleasant View has invited the Manheim Borough Library to be part of the center, and Paskoff reported that Aaron’s Acres has been invited as well. “Pleasant View will build a building, and we will have a condo relationship,” said Paskoff, who noted that Aaron’s Acres hopes to utilize up to 7,000 square feet in the building. Paskoff noted that other plans for the cultural center include housing therapeutic alpacas in a barn area, along with sheep, goats, and chickens. Pleasant View also plans to expand a hydroponics program on the site. The farm property where Aaron’s Acres will be located offers additional possibilities to the organization. “We will have farm land to grow herbs, vegetables, and flowers,” said Paskoff, who sees the move as an opportunity to expand the Aaron’s Acres Plus program, which began providing activities for 22- to 30year-olds in early 2019. “Aaron’s Acres has been for ages 5 to 21, but we are going to go to age 30,” said Paskoff. “We want to have meaningful programs (for individuals in that age group),” she noted, adding that farming, and working with animals, will be

options along with taking part in Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (Triple AOK), which allows participants with developmental disabilities to give back to others rather than just being recipients of services. “(Our clients) will be able to go into the (retirement) community and play games and have a snack with residents,” said Paskoff, who noted that clients could also volunteer at the library. Paskoff also hopes Aaron’s Acres can open a café to be manned by its participants. In addition to the benefits offered to Aaron’s Acres, Paskoff is excited about the purpose of the cultural center, noting that Hollinger hopes to bring other nonprofit organizations to the campus. “(It will be) a lot of

different organizations coming together to create a strong community with people of all abilities and ages,” said Paskoff. “It’s a dream come true.” Paskoff said that if the way is clear, the cultural center will be completed by 2022. She noted that an aquatics center is planned for completion in 2023. For Paskoff, the move to the new center will signal an important shift for Aaron’s Acres. “The first 20 years, we just grew,” said Paskoff. “Now I feel for the next 20 years, we will launch and take off in a different way.” For more information, readers may visit www.aaronsacres.org. Aaron’s Acres hopes to have a new home at the Hoffer Farm property located adjacent to Pleasant View Retirement Community on North Penryn Road in Manheim. Pleasant View plans to build a cultural center on the property with the goal to complete it by 2022.

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has decided to cancel the remainder of its 2019-20 season. The staff and board of directors are evaluating their options. The LSO plans to begin the 2020-21 season in November and will release more details in the coming weeks. Ticketholders are asked to consider donating their May tickets back to the LSO for a tax credit. They may also exchange

adult sports, including time as a softball umpire; and membership in the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge. He helped to found both the Southern End Community Association and the National Center for Construction Education and Research, and he is a board member for the Strasburg Rail Road. Risk served as a Solanco School District board member for 20 years and acted in a leadership role in the local youth football program. “I have been on the football field for 54 years,” Risk said, recalling his extensive gridiron experience. He played high school football for Solanco and coached midget football, and he has served as a high school football referee since 1975. “There is nothing like Friday night under the lights,” he noted. After a lifetime in construction, Risk joined the school

board in 2000 in order to use his background to ensure the district’s building projects were cost-effective. Risk served as president during his final five years on the board. The Risk family first settled in southern Lancaster County 224 years ago. “My children, DJ and Megan, are the eighth generation of our family here since 1796,” Risk said. His mother, Shirley, served on the school board from 1975 to 1985 and was the first female school board president in the county. Risk’s grandfather Donald served on the East Drumore School board. Like his ancestors most likely did, Risk attended a one-room schoolhouse during his early elementary years. During high school, his favorite classes and activities included math, shop class, and football. Risk recalled

print shop teacher Gaylord Arnst’s tutelage while the class produced many of the printed products needed by Solanco schools. Risk also noted that high school assistant principal Tom Regan was “firm, yet fair.” After graduation, Risk worked in Myrtle Beach, where he met Kim Merck. The couple married in 1977. After returning to Lancaster County, Risk worked his way up at Paul Risk Construction, earning the position of president in 1995. In 2003, Risk was honored as the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce Small Business Man of the Year. This past March, he received the community service award from the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce. Given his extensive life experiences, Risk will tell graduating seniors, whether they stay in this area or branch out into the world, that “Solanco is a great place to be and a great place to be from.”

While stages at local theaters across the Susquehanna Valley remain dark, Broadway actor Adam Pascal has added his voice in support of Lancaster’s Prima Theatre, of which he is a veteran guest artist. Singing the anthem “Seasons of Love” from “Rent,” Pascal recorded an exclusive video from his home in California, asking viewers to donate to the theater’s Hero Fund. The video can be seen on Prima Theatre’s Facebook page and at http://primalancaster.org/hero. Americans for the Arts estimates an economic impact related to arts and culture organizations at more than $4.5 billion across the United States. Locally, Prima Theatre responded by producing AtHome streaming content to benefit the theater and out-of-work theater artists. Prima has announced the Hero Fund, sharing the opportunity to

help the organization until it reopens. The theater is also providing benefits to those who donate to the Hero Fund, including an on-stage toast with the cast of its fall show “Motherhood: The Musical.” Pascal has had leading roles in “Rent,” “Aida,” “Memphis,” “Cabaret,” “Chicago,” “Disaster!,” “Something’s Rotten,” and “Chess.” In 1996, Pascal landed the role of Roger Davis in the original cast of “Rent,” for which he won Drama League and Obie awards. In addition to his theater credits, Pascal has toured internationally, as well as recorded numerous solo albums. Kaden Stetler of Lancaster, one of the founders of Rebel Cause, an organization that began feeding homeless people in Lancaster on March 19, credits “Star Wars” with the inspiration behind the group’s mission. “‘Star Wars’ has always been my inner mythology,” explained Stetler. “It’s about helping others and hope and inspiring other people to do the right thing.” Rebel Cause, a group made up of about 15 members living in the Lancaster area and beyond, was founded in 2015 with a dedication to uniting “Star Wars” fans and doing good in the community. The Rebel Cause mission statement reads in part, “We are committed to helping the homeless in Lancaster County with dignity and compassion.” Until recently, Rebel Cause aided local members of the homeless community with regular events. “We sponsored community meals on the weekends and held fundraisers for needs of the homeless community,” said Stetler. “We would use whatever space was

Tom Wolf announced that all non-essential businesses would be closed, Stetler found himself out of work. “I knew Rebel Cause was in a position to do something (for the homeless),” said Stetler. “We started the very next day making food and handing it out to the homeless, and through that I became officially connected with the city to use one area to serve meals.” Rebel Cause volunteers hand out dinners each evening of the week, including weekends, at 6:30 p.m. from the sidewalk on the Beaver Street side of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, which is located at 119 S. According to Stetler, about five volunteers arrive at the restaurant daily around 2 p.m. to start cooking. “We package meals at 5:30 and head to St. Mary’s around 6 p.m.,” reported Stetler. Kaden Stetler of Rebel Cause stands with a truckload of food that he and his crew of volunteers then turned into meals for Lancaster’s homeless population. Rebel Cause is made up of “Star Wars” fans with a mission to aid the homeless. providing meals, they have given out an average of 700 to 1,000 meals weekly. In addition to handing out meals, Rebel Cause has opened a day center at Crossroads Mennonite Church at 401 Church St., Lancaster. The day center is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. The center offers coffee, snacks, movies, books, art classes and art therapy, yoga classes, and live music. “We have a 20-person limit, and we are close to full each day,” Stetler said. Stetler noted that about 20 volunteers per day take part in the

efforts to hand out meals and run the day center. To promote safety and comply with Pennsylvania COVID-19 recommendations, volunteers wear masks reminiscent of “Star Wars” characters and also hand them out to those who need them. The masks are made by MADS Enterprises in Lancaster, and Stetler reported that about 300 masks had been given away by mid-April.
