During the seminar, Harper and fellow security consultant Audra King

will discuss personal safety in a variety of circumstances. The presentations will offer insight on how one can remain safe at home, avoid danger when returning to a parked vehicle and stay alert in common situations. A portion of the seminar will cover different ways that students can keep themselves safe on college campuses and utilize campus security resources. The event will also include

Harper started CSSC in 2018, primarily to offer

active-shooter training to businesses and schools in the area. Shortly after, CSSC expanded its services to include safety seminars of all varieties due to the number of questions Harper was receiving from the community. He said that many people were approaching him for advice about having packages stolen

or being harassed while they were out for a jog. “The seminar encompasses a lot of what we do and training in different areas,” Harper said. “People can take this information back to their families and workplaces to help keep others safe.” At the end of the seminar, Harper and King will answer questions from the

Harper has worked in law enforcement for 24 years and served in the military for three years. CSSC employs six other consultants who also share a background in either law enforcement or the military. CSSC is based in Lititz, but the company frequently travels to provide on-site training and other security services.

Colerain alumni celebrate

100th anniversary

The Colerain Alumni Association held its annual meeting and banquet on April 29 at the Bart Township Fire Company. The reunion was open to anyone who attended Colerain schools and graduated from Colerain or Solanco High School.

Eighty graduates attended the event, which featured a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the association.

The organization was established as a means for graduates of what was then Colerain High School to get together for reunions. The first banquet was held on April 27, 1923. This year’s event was the 98th meeting, as reunions were not held in 1943 due to World War II and during COVID. This year’s reunion was held exactly 100 years and two days later than the first gathering.

Association president Ken Walton welcomed the alumni who were seated by classes.

The oldest class present, the Class of 1950, was represented by Ron Ferguson, whose father, Charles Ferguson, was the association president in 1924. Ron also came the farthest distance, traveling from Bedford, located in western Pennsylvania. The class with the most present was the Class of 1964, with seven members in attendance.

The 50-year class is honored at each gathering, so the Class of 1973 was recognized this year. The Class of 1973 was represented by Rick Harvey, Barb Whiteside Wharton and Steve Herr, who gave a talk on memories from their school years.

A memoriam was given by Charles Hess on 13 alumni who have passed on in the previous year. After a meal and meeting, the members parted by singing “Auld Lang Syne” and “God Bless America.”

Any Colerain graduates who would like to get on the invitation mailing list should email cmgjag@epix.net.

Softball triumphs over Lower Dauphin in districts

After a disappointing exit from the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs, Solanco’s softball team regrouped for the second phase of the postseason. They made short work of visiting Lower Dauphin in Monday’s District Three 5A opening round action, crushing the Falcons 12-1 in five innings.

The top seeded hosts spotted the Falcons one run in the opening inning but quickly regained momentum. Kira Roark opened the home half of the first with a base hit and took second on an error. Josie Janssen’s double knotted the score and Delaney Gote’s two out, two run single gave Solanco a lead they never lost.

“After that first inning, Anna (Sexton, 9K) shut them down,” said head coach Brett Miller. “Both of their hits were in that inning. They had a few good hitters, including their shortstop who was hitting over .400, but Anna settled in. And then she came around and got the game-winning hit.”

Zoey Evans scored on a passed ball in the second inning and Holly Grube’s runscoring triple highlighted a three run fourth inning as Solanco extended the lead, 6-1.

And then the southern end favorites took control, scoring six runs in the fifth to end the game just 75 minutes after it started.

Ava Fedoruk, batting seventh, opened the fifth with a walk. Evans collected her second base hit of the day and both runners scored on Ava Martin’s home run.

“She’s batting ninth for a reason,” said Miller of Martin who also doubled to lead off the fourth. “She makes them pay.”

Roark followed with a walk, Janssen singled up the middle and Lower Dauphin changed pitchers. Grube (2-4, 3RBI) greeted Carisssa Wenner with a base hit and, with two outs, Sexton’s base hit plated the final two runs of the game.

“We finished with 15 hits,” noted Miller. “When you have numerous batters with multiple hits it makes it hard for opponents. Martin had two hits in the ninth spot and then Kira, Josie and Holly, our top three hitters, also had two hits each.

“We took the lead, and we kept going but we also made the defensive plays,” Miller continued. “Sara (DeFrancesco) had two bunt pop up catches, the first coming in that first inning when they had some momentum.

“This was a big win. The last two years we did not get past the first round,” the coach added. “Now we gotta win the next one.”

TRACK

Six members of the track team traveled to Shippensburg University for the District Three 3A championships on Friday and Saturday, May 19-20. They came home with a handful of medals but none bigger than Katie Urbine’s gold in the pole vault.

Urbine, the two-time defending L-L League champ, settled for third place a week prior to districts. She called it a humbling experience. And she regrouped. The senior not only claimed her second straight District 3 title but did so with a meet record and a personal best, clearing 13-8.

“Her best indoor jump is 13’6 and her best outdoor was 13’,” note head coach Jen McDowell.

That 13-8, which she cleared on her first attempt, beat the previous record of 13-2 set by Manheim Township’s Mackenzie Horn in 2018.

And if that wasn’t enough, Urbine then joined Oli Oravtiz, Sarah Bard and Emma Housekeeper in the 4x100 relay. Their 49.08 was good enough for fourth place.

“Their time was a little slower than at the league meet but they had clean handoffs and are super excited to go to states,” said McDowell.

Also grabbing a district medal was Noah Baber. The senior jumper cleared 6-2 and finished in eighth place in the high jump, thus ending his scholastic career.

“He was the top LancasterLebanon League placer in AAA,” noted McDowell, “and that 6-2 is just two inches below his personal best.”

Also, for the boys, John Sankus ended his season in 16th place in the shot put. “He was very excited to get to districts,” said McDowell, “and had a great senior season.”

Oravatiz had the busiest weekend of all, competing in the long and triple jumps as well as the 100-meter dash and the relay. She was 13th in the triple jump (35-1), the sixth highest L-L League placer and went 15-11 in the long jump for 12th, the fifth longest jump for L-L League qualifiers.

“She was disappointed with her jumps but continues to show improvement,” said McDowell. “And for a sophomore to qualify in three individual events, as well as a relay, is an accomplishment in itself. She has grown as an athlete and will continue to have success.”

Housekeeper also competed in the 200 but did not qualify for the semifinals. “This was her second year competing in an individual race,” McDowell pointed out. “She had a great season running the 100, 200

and 400 in dual meets. I am excited to see her continue her talent in soccer in the fall and reach her goal of districts again next spring.”

FOOTBALL

Elijah Cunningham took

part in the PSFCA East-West big school all-star football game held May 21 at Bishop McDevitt High School. He represented the West squad which finished with a 24-16 victory.

Miller wrote and illustrated the graphic novel series “Click” and co-authored its spin-off series, “Besties.” The August meetings will feature Kwame Ivery, an English teacher and author based in New Jersey. Ivery released his first young adult novel, titled “The Problem With the Other Side,” in 2021 and has worked on various screenplays.

During the first meeting of

each month, the guest authors will give a presentation to students and offer insight on their respective careers. After the presentation, the author will provide students with a creative prompt and spend the remainder of the meeting helping them write, draw or make comics based on the prompt. For the second meeting of the month, the guest authors will return to host a workshop and share their creative methods as the kids develop their own material.

“The guest authors will share their own work with students and ask for feedback. It’s a cool aspect to the program because these kids

meet

are the authors’ main audience and they want to know what they’re thinking,” said Lindsay Bandy, the program’s supervisor. “I work with the guest author for constructive feedback strategies, and they work with the students to make each other’s work better.” Bandy is also a published author who writes young adult historical fiction.

The Teen SummerZine program was introduced in 2021 as a way to creatively engage students over the summer while they are not in school. The program won the Best Practices Award from the Pennsylvania State Library Association and was held vir-

tually for its first two years. This is the first year that the program will have in-person meetings and workshops for students. “We didn’t have any county-wide teen programs for the summer; many programs are only tailored to younger kids,” Bandy said. “We wanted to do something to reach the older kids and help them to be creative over the summer break.” In December, the program’s participants will gather at the Manheim Township Public Library to celebrate the publication with cupcakes.

Church anniversary

“We are going to have (alumnus) Philip Graybeal give a testimony and remembrance. I will be dressed up in an 1823 outfit and talk about what was going on nationwide in 1823 and talk about the beginnings and origin of the church,” said Farmer.

There will be special music during the Sunday service, and the message will be delivered by current pastor Ed Arnold. “He grew up in the church and was mentored very well by Pastor Hunter,” noted Farmer.

After graduating from Lancaster Bible College in 2007, Arnold became Beulah’s assistant pastor and then lead pastor in January 2021. Other staff members at the church include Mark Freisleben, pastor of student ministries, and Noah Phenninger, music and worship pastor.

According to a history of the church, a group of Christians from Hephzibah Baptist Church in East Fallowfield belived there was a need for a Baptist church in the southern end of Chester County. In June of 1823 they established what is now Beulah Baptist Church. “They met somewhere in the village of Russellville, although the exact location is not known,” noted Farmer.

In 1832, a meeting was held under an oak tree on a property along Route 896 north of Russellville to discuss where to build a permanent church building. The group bought the site where

Beulah Baptist Church now stands for $27.75.

Over the subsequent 200 years, the church has undergone modifications and additions. “The right section (of the building) is the main sanctuary,” Farmer stated.

“The center section was the original church … built in the early 1830s; it is now our vestibule/social area.” The left portion of the church houses classrooms, and additional classrooms and a fellowship hall are located downstairs.

The front portico with the steeple is the church’s most recent addition, constructed in the late 1980s.

Farmer pointed out that church members come from the northern Maryland, Cochranville, Nottingham, Oxford and southern Lancaster County areas. Each congregation member will receive a 200th anniversary booklet on

June 4. Additional copies will be available to purchase.

“On May 7, we dug up a time capsule that was buried at the 150th anniversary in 1973,” Farmer added. “There was a VHS tape (of church photos and activities), which we converted into modern media, and a Sunday paper from 1973. We are planning

on burying another time capsule later this summer or early fall, so we can collect things from this celebration.”

The GPS address for Beulah Baptist Church is 3815 Newark Road, Oxford. For more information, call 610-932-9595 or visit www.bbcoxford.com or www.facebook.com/beulah .b.church.

SINGING SPRING

The $1 million grant will benefit the GOTR headquarters as well as the 50 local councils in Healthy Futures’ footprint, with funding focused on the continued development of GOTR’s IDEA program. In particular, GOTR is focused on reaching girls from underserved communities, promoting a culture of inclusion across the organization, building a culturally competent curriculum and increasing local resources in key communities.

Local councils will use the funds to diversify their coaching staff, increase program access for girls of color and further enhance programming that acknowledges the needs and realities of their communities. Funds will also go to strengthening the organization’s core programming and training while supporting sustainability across local councils, many of which are still recovering from the impacts of COVID-19.

The partnership between Healthy Futures and GOTR was established in 2020, with an initial grant of $1 million supporting programming during the pandemic. The 2020 grant contributed to GOTR’s swiftly adapting services and programming to serve girls meaningfully and safely during the pandemic.

Together with donors, Rite Aid associates, community partners and neighbors, Rite Aid Healthy Futures, formerly known as the Rite Aid Foundaion, has donated more than $15 million a year to causes, initiatives and organizations that make a difference in people’s lives. Friends of Fishing Creek post event

A celebratory event will be held on Saturday, June 10, at 11 a.m. in Drumore Township Park, 1675 Furniss Road, Drumore. The public is invited to celebrate the presentation of new informational signs. Refreshments will be provided.

In 2022, the Friends of Fishing Creek received a grant from Lancaster Clean Water Partners to provide education about the Fishing Creek watershed. The grant included the creation of the new signs to be installed in Drumore Township Park, highlighting the native plants and functions of the pollinator garden and rain garden as well as the importance of the riparian buffers that have been planted over the past several years.

The Fishing Creek watershed is located in the southern portion of Lancaster County. In the Fishing Creek Nature Preserve, visitors can find a stream that hosts freshwater trout, cranes, herons, and countless other species; native wildflowers along the streambank; and vernal pools.

Friends of Fishing Creek is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) volunteer organization committed to monitoring, preserving,

enhancing, and promoting the Fishing Creek watershed through education, community involvement, and watershed improvement projects. Since its founding in 2006, Friends of Fishing Creek has worked to protect watershed health in Drumore and engage community members in its projects.

In Drumore Township Park, people can find the Friends’ pollinator garden, containing many native wildflower species to attract butterflies and other pollinators. In the same park is the rain garden sponsored by Donegal Trout Unlimited and planted by Friends of Fishing Creek volunteers. The rain garden helps control stormwater runoff while hosting a variety of native plants.

In recent years, the Friends

of Fishing Creek group has also partnered with local Girl Scout troops. The Friends planned and executed several education events where dozens of Girl Scouts to learned about water quality and conservation efforts. In April 2019, approximately 80 Girl Scouts attended a handson event where they learned about the water cycle, participated in macroinvertebrate water testing, and helped the Friends plant the pollinator garden. At an event in May 2022, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and parents joined the Friends at Drumore Township Park to learn about riparian buffer tree plantings, native pollinator plants, and macroinvertebrate testing.

The Friends of Fishing Creek group has also sponsored several adult education-

Highest honor roll announced

al presentations at the Quarryville Library. Professional guest speakers visited the library to share information on invasive species and the Community Wildlife Habitat program.

The Friends of Fishing Creek is able to pursue its mission through the help of partner entities such as the Lancaster Conservancy, Donegal Trout Unlimited, Lancaster Clean Water Partners, and the Drumore Township supervisors.

Volunteers are needed for the Friends’ continuing projects, including water testing, tree plantings and repair, trash cleanup, and dam dismantling in the Fishing Creek Preserve.

For more information about the celebratory event or volunteer opportunities, call 717-548-3581.
