Making friends through film

In2018, Hempfield High School (HHS) teacher Matt Binder and Chris Schwalm from Cedar Crest High School were discussing ideas for new media programs in the area. Local schools typically only have one media or journalism teacher per district, so the two brainstormed how they could find a way to unite students across the region.

Binder, who teaches CommTech at HHS, wanted to create an event that would stray from a typical film contest that focuses on students’ competition with each other. “Usually in our field, contests pit school against school. But when students get to college, they’ll need to learn how to work with people who aren’t their friends,” Binder said.

Binder and Schwalm came up with the idea to host a film festival for students and partnered with Elizabethtown College, which agreed to have the event on its campus. The first contest was held in

the spring of 2019 and returned last year after taking a break due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students returned to Elizabethtown College on May 22 for this year’s event, which included middle school and high school students from Hempfield, Solanco, Cedar Crest, Donegal, Eastern York and Waynesboro school districts. Upon arriving at the college, the students were divided into groups with kids from different schools and were assigned a prompt that they needed to use to make a video. Certain students in each group were assigned roles such as director or editor.

For the first portion of the day, the groups dispersed across the campus to come up with an idea and find a location to film. While the director and other group members shot the footage, the editors got to tour Elizabethtown College’s communications facility, which includes a radio station, an editing room and television studio. Once the director and company were done filming, they handed the See Film festival pg 2

Lancaster Community Market will feature local bands and vendors

The Lancaster Community Market will return to the area on Saturday, June 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will take place at 311 Stanley K. Tanger Drive, Lancaster, located by the guest service area of the Tanger Outlets, and it will include live entertainment, kids activities and local vendors and nonprofit organizations.

Live music for the Lancaster Community Market will be provided by gospel musician Chuck Mock and local outfit Small Town Troubadours, a rock band based in Quarryville. Small

Town Troubadours’ members include high school students from the Solanco and Hempfield school districts.

Multiple local vendors will sell a variety of items during the event, including homemade jewelry, handpoured candles, wreaths, dog treats and accessories and bath products. Lancaster-based author Chas Williamson will have books available for purchase and signing.

Food and beverages will be available to purchase from a slew of food trucks, such as G’s Concessions, Brotherly Love Scratch Kitchen, Under the Bridge Cider, Joe’s Fish Sandwiches and Kona Ice of Lancaster.

Student’s artwork to be featured in national exhibition

A painting by Solanco High School senior Anika Hodgdon has been accepted into the 42nd annual Congressional Art Exhibition in Washington, D.C. Hodgdon’s pastel piece “Reader’s Quiet Reflection” will be recognized during a reception at the Capitol, among artwork from students across the country.

Hodgdon will travel to Washington, D.C., for the opening reception of the exhibition and an awards ceremony in June. The artists featured

in the exhibition will tour the Capitol, and their work will be hung in the Cannon Tunnel for the next year. Hodgdon’s work will represent the 11th Congressional District of Pennsylvania among over 400 pieces from districts across the country.

“Reader’s Quiet Reflection” took Hodgdon four months to complete and depicts her with the book “Emma” by Jane Austen. Hodgdon said her teacher Candace Rakers encouraged her to portray something she loved in the painting.

“This is great experience for students to work with people they don’t know yet and to meet new people,” said Tony Mendez, the technology education teacher at Solanco High School. “They’ll have to do this in college, and it was awesome to see them so excited and working together.”

At the end of the day, the students gathered in the college’s auditorium for a screening of the videos. Some groups created advertisements for items that would be important for one to take to college; others were tasked with making a music video with a part of a song. After watching each video, each student voted on his or her favorite one, and winners

were named in the middle school and high school categories. “The main goal was to get students and teachers together at the end of the year by using the subject or hobby they love to bond,” Binder said. “Since our programs are relatively small within each school district, the kids get to meet and find people like them from other schools.”

“Overall, it was a great day for not only my students, but every student who participated,” Mendez added.

Canner gauge testing posted

Pressure canner dial gauge testing is available. Dial gauge pressure canners need to be checked for accuracy each year, and new canners and new gauges should also be tested. Pressure canners with a weighted gauge do not have to be tested for accuracy because they cannot go out of calibration.

Clean gauges or lids can be dropped off at Good’s Store locations for testing. The clean gauge or lid will be tested, and customers will pick the gauge or lid up on a separate date. In-person testing will be available free of charge at Good’s Store, 1127 S. State St., Ephrata, on Thursday, June 15, from 1 to 3 p.m.; Good’s Store, 2499 Stiegel Pike (Route 501 North), Schaefferstown, on Friday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to noon; and Good’s Store, 1338 Main St., East Earl, on Friday, June 23, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Drop-off testing will also be offered for free. Three drop-off time frames are available: Monday to Wednesday, June 12 to 14, at Good’s Store in Ephrata or at 333 W. Fourth St., Quarryville, with pickup on or after June 16; Monday to Wednesday, June 19 to June 21, at Good’s Store in Ephrata or Quarryville, with pickup on or after June 23; June 12 to 15 at Good’s Store in Schaefferstown or Ephrata, with pickup on or after Saturday, June 17; and Monday to Thursday, June 19 to 22, at Good’s Store in Schaefferstown or Ephrata, with pickup on or after Saturday, June 24.

Urbine grabs gold; softball falls in district semifinal

With the softball team at home, battling through district play, four members of the track team traveled to Shippensburg University for the PIAA Championships on Friday and Saturday, May 26-27 and rose to the occasion. Katie Urbine captured the 3A pole vault championship Friday morning and also set a new state record. She was the only competitor to clear 13-9 and in doing so, bettered the previous mark of 13-3 set in 2018 by Manheim Township’s Mackenzie Horn.

Last year Urbine finished in second place on misses. Veronica Vacca of Mount Saint Joseph, a Philly Jumps Club teammate of Urbine’s, also cleared 13 feet, and grabbed gold.

“Katie was perfect through all her jumps until 13 feet,” said head coach Jen McDowell. “She had stopped when running down the runway due to a strong wind, but

the official claimed she broke the plane. She cleared it on the next jump. Overall, her jumps were great,” she added. “She had two fantastic attempts at 14 feet, like at districts. She will clear that height soon.”

Urbine is a two-time league champ, a two-time district champ, two-time state indoor champ and now a state champion, Solanco’s first since Cliff Wimer claimed gold in 1975 with the fastest mile run.

Soon after she grabbed gold, she joined Oli Oravitz, Sarah Bard, and Emma Housekeeper in the 4x100 relay. The four-some broke their own school record in 48.77 seconds.

“The girls broke the record set last year at a dual meet, then again at leagues and finally at states,” recalled McDowell. “Last year’s team was Katie, Oli, Emma, and Carly Rose.

“They were seeded 16th and finished 10th,” praised McDowell. “This team was amazing to watch.

They work so well together and have worked hard to accomplish their goal of states. With three girls returning, we will work on finding a fourth girl and hope to get back to states again next year.

SOFTBALL

With a berth in the District Three 5A finals on the line, top seed Solanco (22-2) hosted Northern York (19-4) Tuesday, May 30 in the semifinals.

The Polar Bears, who advanced with a crushing 11-0 shutout over Donegal (No. 4) in the quarterfinals, jumped out to a 2-0 lead and never trailed. Solanco struggled to put all facets of the game together and, despite a late rally, fell 7-4.

The visitors connected for a pair of one-out base hits in the first inning before Anna Sexton struck out the No. 4 hitter and Polar Bear pitcher Sammy Magee. An untimely error and another base hit put the visitors in front 2-0 early.

A run scoring triple made it 3-0 in the third and a triple, aided by an error, made it 4-0 in the top of the fifth. Solanco struck out eight times to that point and left five runners on

base. But in the bottom of the fifth, they made their move. Kira Roark drew a leadoff walk and Josie Janssen singled before NY turned to relief pitcher Grace Singer. Holly Grube’s ground out moved Roark to third and Sara DeFrancesco’s hard single to left field was misplayed, allowing two runs to score. Delaney Gote’s base hit made it 4-3.

Just as quickly, the Bears responded with two in the top of the sixth due to a series of unfortunate events. Sexton took a hard shot off the leg for a base hit and a second hit, an infield single followed. Magee lined a shot at Roark at third and after a scramble the bases were loaded setting the stage for a tworun error and all the momentum Northern York needed.

“We were way too generous at times,” said head coach Brett Miller. “You have to make the plays. Anna pitched well enough to win but you can’t give a team four and five outs. I think they had one, maybe two earned runs.”

The visitors scored one more in the seventh, thanks to two more

errors. Solanco looked to break things open in the bottom half, but their rally was cut short. Janssen opened with a base hit and took second on an error. Sexton walked with two outs and another Gote base hit made it 7-4. Ava Fedoruk’s single loaded the bags, but a bases-loaded strikeout moved Solanco into the consolation bracket.

“I thought their first pitcher threw well and took advantage of the strike zone she was given,” said Miller. “We have to know the strike zone and be able to adjust. We seem to find ways, at times, to make the game more interesting. But these are experiences and we’re still a young squad (one senior starter, four freshmen, two sophomores, three juniors). This isn’t travel ball, it’s not rec ball or summer ball. There is no next weekend,” he added. “Practice goes a long way, and we need to transfer that to the field. And now we look to win that third seed game so we can play closer to home.”

Solanco advanced to the semifinals with a 4-1 quarterfinals win over visiting Ephrata Thursday, May 25. It was the fourth meeting between the two squads and the most important.

Roark gave the home team some early momentum, ripping her first home run of the season to left field.

Not to be out done, Ephrata managed to tie the score at 1-1 with a homer to center field in the third inning. Solanco responded in the bottom half. Ava Martin opened with a base hit, took second on an error and moved to third on Janssen’s sacrifice before scoring on a wild pitch.

Ephrata was poised to go back in

front one inning later. With runners on first and third, and with one out, the Mounts No. 6 hitter smacked a fly ball to Martin who made the catch in left field and fired to Olivia Musser at first for a double play.

Solanco left the bases loaded in the fourth but extended their lead in the fifth. Janssen and Grube both reached on errors and Janssen scored on DeFrancesco’s sac fly. Sexton reached on an error that allowed Grube to score the second unearned run of the inning.

“It’s definitely a challenge to play the same team four times,” said Miller. “Their pitcher threw her best game this time but we responded with some timely hitting. Anna is throwing very well right now and you expect that from a senior. She’s playing like it’s her last time.”

Sexton scattered five hits, struck out eight and did not give a single walk.

Hodgdon is an avid reader and received the book as a gift from a friend. “(This painting is) definitely my best work,” Hodgdon said. “It was my first color piece in Mrs. Rakers’ class, and I was really excited for it.”

Hodgdon has always been interested in art and began taking drawing classes as a freshman at Solanco High School. She was asked by Rakers to join her portfolio class, which she has taken each year since. In the first year of the class, students work on basic skills like illustrating simple shapes, and they learn about color scales. In the second year, Rakers has her

students create still-life paintings and self-portraits. In Hodgdon’s third year of the portfolio class, she began to work on more complex pieces and entered her work into various competitions. “There’s so much great work in the Congressional Art Exhibition,” Hodgdon said. “It’s an honor to be included in it.”

Hodgdon plans to attend Elizabethtown College to study biology in the fall, although she will continue to work on painting as a hobby. “I really love art, but I wouldn’t want to do it for a living,” Hodgdon said. “I do it because I love it.”

Giant to offer virtual cooking classes

The Giant Company team of dietitians will offer a variety of free, virtual nutrition classes in June, which is National Dairy Month. The dietitians will highlight the nutrition benefits dairy offers, as well as share simple recipe ideas to celebrate the season.

“Summer Entertaining” will be offered on Thursday, June 8, at noon. Home cooks will learn to prepare Buffalo ranch chicken stuffed cucumber boats.

A “Wellbeing Workshop” will be featured on Wednesday, June 14, at 8 p.m. Participants will explore the connection between dairy and weight management.

“Table Talk” will be offered on June 14 and Wednesdays, June 21 and 28, at noon. Attendees will learn about what dairy has to offer from industry experts.

Home cooks will prepare banana split foil packets for Father’s Day during the “Mini Chef Morning” class on Saturday, June 17, at 10 a.m.

A new series called “Meal Solution Mondays” will be offered in June on Mondays at noon. The classes will offer easy and affordable meal solutions, like chickpea veggie burgers and grilled steak and corn salad.

At noon every Tuesday in June, the dietitians will have tips, tricks and recipe inspiration for the summer produce season in the “Produce Spotlight” class. Participants will learn how easy it is to make refrigerator pickled beets and whip up Vidalia onion dressing using seasonal fruits and veggies.

Home cooks will learn how to make quick and seasonal dishes each Thursday at noon as part of the “Summer Entertaining” class. On the last two Thursdays, the dietitians will gear up for 4th of July celebrations with red, white and blue salsa and mini patriotic cheesecakes.

Visit www.giantfoodstores.com /wellness or www.martinsfoods.com /wellness for recipe inspiration and resources. There is also a link to preregister for all virtual classes, including a complete listing of classes and ingredients needed for each class. In addition, customers can earn 50 Choice Rewards points when they register, provide their card number and state and attend the entire class.

Several nonprofit organizations will operate stations at the Lancaster Community Market to provide information and offer free activities for kids. Organizations such as the Lafayette Fire Department, Vital Theatre Company and many local food pantries will be in attendance, and the children’s activities will include a bounce house and face painting.

The Lancaster Community Market was first organized in 2021 by MJ Small Business Squad, a marketing agency that seeks to promote locally owned companies in Lancaster. MJ Squad began organizing community events after the COVID-19 pandemic to assist business owners who were heavily affected by the resulting closures. When Tanger Outlets contacted MJ Squad about hosting an event, MJ Squad’s co-founder Megan Kalbach said that she was

ecstatic about the partnership.

“Tanger Outlets reached out wanting to support our mission, which is great because it’s such a hub for businesses in the area,” Kalbach added. “The event has had a large boost of support from the community and has helped us support so many businesses and nonprofits.”

The Lancaster Community Market drew over 1,000 attendees in its first year. Kalbach received a wave of positive feedback from those in the community, as well as visitors of Lancaster who were pleasantly surprised by the festivities. Due to the fact that buses from surrounding areas stop at Tanger Outlets, Kalbach said the location of the market helps to promote the culture of businesses in Lancaster and extend their reach.

For more information or to register as a vendor for the event, visit www.mjsquad.com/events.
