Lancaster County Cruisers plan annual car show

Lancaster County Cruisers will host its 23rd annual car show at the Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike, on Saturday, July 1. The rain-orshine event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and it will benefit local nonprofit organizations in Conestoga and Quarryville.

Registration will be available for a set price on the day of the show, and the first 150 participants to register will receive a dash plaque. Owners of any vehicle from classic cars to motorcycles to trucks may register for the show. Over 40 trophies, which are provided by the local businesses that sponsor the event, will be given out during the show. Lancaster County Cruisers will present a

President’s Trophy as well as a Best of Show Trophy. Music will be provided throughout the day by disc jockey Jeff Primaldi. Food will be available to purchase from two food trucks, and desserts will be sold by an ice cream vendor and a baked goods stand.

Every year, the club donates a portion of the funds raised by the show to

Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank in Quarryville. In recent years, Lancaster County Cruisers also decided to use the show to support the Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm in Conestoga. Building Bridges offers equine therapy services to veterans who are experiencing PTSD from their time in the armed forces. “Helping the

About three years ago, first responders were called to the scene of an accident on Little Britain Road, just down the street from Britain Hill Venue and Winery. Debbie Helm, the owner of the venue, witnessed EMTs, firefighters and police officers rush to the location. Helm recalled the tragic outcome of the accident, which resulted in multiple injuries and deaths, but also remembered the courage of the emergency personnel who responded. “It was very traumatic for those first responders. will operate a booth at the event to offer information on the club and applications for membership. The club is open to car enthusiasts of any kind; owning a vehicle is not a requirement to join. The members of Lancaster County Cruisers meet once every month to plan the club’s event, coordinate trips to car shows and discuss vehicles that are for sale.

WFCS to add grades nine and 10 this fall

Building on a successful 80-plus-year history and as a way to meet the needs of the community, West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) will add ninth and 10th grades this fall, and another grade level will be added each of the two years afterward. “In the 2025-26 school year, we will be able to say we offer classes for preschool through 12th grade,” said WFCS principal Heather Furlong.

Registration is currently underway for grades nine and 10, which will

follow a traditional model, meeting in person on Mondays through Fridays. Like the other grades, classes will include art, music, physical education, Bible, Spanish and electives.

WFCS, which formed in 1941, currently offers preschool through eighth grade, but a decision was made to add grades nine and 10.

“Together the board and the administration heard the needs of our community,” said Furlong, explaining how the decision came about to offer the additional grades.

“It has always been a vision and

part of the strategic plan to open up a high school. God really opened the doors and encouraged us to make this happen for this fall.”

For the 2023-24 school year, the high school students will use classrooms in the existing space. “As the program continues to grow, we do have space we can grow into,” noted Furlong. “The gymnasium was built 15 years ago, so the (classroom) space is there; it just needs to be finished.”

The school has hired new high school teachers, as well as high school administrator Kendra Ridgway, who previously taught at WFCS. She will teach English for grades nine and 10, and work as the coordinator of the high school program. “I’m glad to be back and really looking forward to teaching again,” said Ridgway.

Furlong said that WFCS is attractive to parents who

are seeking a nurturing environment for their children. “We are relational. We partner with home, school and church to offer students a well-rounded Christian education,” she said, noting that the average class size is 18 students. “We infuse biblical principles in all aspects of our day and our curriculum. We have a specific Bible class each day and chapel services each week.”

“I think one of our strengths is small class sizes. It allows the teachers to be able to get to know the kids individually and their individual learning needs,” Ridgway added. “We are intentional about providing quality academics. Our goal is to make sure we are sending students out prepared for their future. From a spiritual aspect, high school is a very formative time for developing your faith and making it your own. We

want to give a place for students to have space to grow in their faith and learn how to relate to the people around them.”

WFCS, located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen, serves students from the Avon Grove, Coatesville, Octorara, Oxford, Pequea Valley,

Solanco and UnionvilleChadds Ford area school districts. Busing is provided, and financial aid is available. For more information, visit www.wfcs.org. Parents and prospective students interested in setting up a tour of the school are asked to call the office at 610-593-5011.

Heritage Sunday planned at Boehm’s UMC

The Boehm’s Chapel Society will hold its annual Heritage Sunday event on June 25 in historic Boehm’s Chapel at Boehm’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 13 W. Boehms Road, Willow Street. A society business meeting will be held at 3 p.m., followed by the worship service at 4 p.m.

The event is one in which many descendants of Martin Boehm, who gave early Methodist circuit riders a

place to say, and whose home was a meeting place for early Methodists, an opportunity to return to the chapel, which has stood since 1791.

Dale Mylin, a society board member and a member of Byerland Mennonite Church, where Martin Boehm was pastor and bishop, will present a message titled “Keeping Your Hand to the Plow: On Being an Influencer.” Mylin is a ninth-generation descendant of Martin

Meylin, an early county settler.

Music will be provided by soloist and keyboard player Oksana Reedy, music director at Boehm’s UMC, and violinist Tammy Ober.

Following the worship service, Jeff and Sue Frey, who own the nearby Boehm family homestead, will offer a hayride to the farm.

Boehm’s Chapel is located south of Willow Street, off Route 272.

Solanco softball history, all-stars, and a final season

The 2023 softball team will go down in Solanco history tied for second place for most wins in a season. The 2018 team ran up 24 wins and were LancasterLebanon League co-champs. Twenty years earlier (1998), the girls finished third in district play and capped the year with 22 wins, matching this year’s squad who also suffered five losses, including the last three of the season.

“If you look at those 22 wins, we put together a pretty good season,” said head coach Brett Miller, who announced earlier this year that he was retiring. “Can’t let those last three games define the season. You have to focus on the 22 wins.”

In Miller’s 34 years at the helm, Solanco has had seven seasons of 20 or more wins and four more at 19. They captured 19 section titles, including this season, and three L-L League crowns (1995, 2005, 2018) and three times were runners up. The 2018 team went to the 5A

state semifinals where they fell to eventual champ Lampeter-Strasburg. Solanco defeated the Pioneers twice this season. L-S went on to earn the District Three 4A title.

Highlighting this season was the play of five members of the team recently announced as First Team allstars. Considered as the top 18 players in the section, Anna Sexton, Holly Grube, Josie Janssen, Sara DeFrancesco and Kira Roark were recognized.

“It’s a nice individual recognition that requires a team to achieve,” said Miller. “Holly, a junior, is a three-time all-star. She finished with

30 hits, including a team-high eight triples and a .538 batting average.

“Anna, our only senior starter, received her second allstar nomination as a pitcher/third baseman,” he continued. “She rose to the occasion and improved as the season rolled along.”

Sexton finished with a 13-4 record in the circle. She struck out 83 batters, walked 26, and held the fifth highest batting average on the team with a .410.

Janssen, a junior outfielder,

led with 39 runs scored and tied DeFrancesco, who led with 10 doubles, with 13 walks. She finished with a .381 batting average that included 21 RBI. Roark, a freshman, tied Ava Fedoruk, also a freshman, with a team-high 31 hits. She batted .451 on the year while Fedoruk followed Grube with a .473 average.

Janssen, DeFrancesco, a sophomore catcher and third base/pitcher Roark will all return, along with Grube, with the goal of surpassing that

22-win mark.

“Overall, we were far more productive offensively than we anticipated,” said Miller. “The freshmen were thrust into positions that were probably not tailored for them. The whole team worked hard, and they all gained experience that they will hopefully build upon next year.”

As far as Miller’s numbers…in 34 years he racked up 548 wins against 197 losses which averages out to about 16 wins and 5.7 losses a season. Most teams would be happy with that.

Solanco strives for more. Those 34 years also include 418 wins against Lancaster-Lebanon League opponents and 123 losses, a winning percentage of 77.

“I think I’ll miss the practices and the exchanges with the girls the most,” Miller said. “There have been many conversations over the years but teaching and coaching…they go together,” he added. “And it has run its course.”

For this reporter, coach Miller and I have put together 34 years of conversations as well. Every season, from start to finish, I would call coach Miller once a week, at our regularly scheduled time. It started out strictly to get the game results and details. No internet back then. But the conversations evolved over the years and what took 15 or so minutes often grew to a half an hour, some weeks more. I would sometimes talk with his wife. Occasionally the kids would answer the phone. I looked forward to those conversations that many times included talk of basketball, my favorite sport, or ice hockey, Mr. Miller’s. I honestly don’t think we ever missed a week. Many players have passed through his impressive program. I was fortunate enough to be able to write about most of them, privileged to be able to stand in the dugout, and grateful to have gained a friend in the process.

Lancaster County Planning Commission announces award winners

The Lancaster County Planning Commission (LCPC) held its third annual Leadership Awards Celebration on May 9. Individuals and projects from around Lancaster County were awarded for their understanding and support for good planning, the planning process and places2040, the Lancaster County Comprehensive Plan.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Mary Wickenheiser from Columbia Borough. Wickenheiser has provided Columbia Borough with distinguished and committed service for 23 years. She has served on borough council, the planning commission, Columbia River Park Committee, Lancaster County Solid Waste Authority Citizens Advisory Committee, the Safe Harbor Citizens Advisory Committee and the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail Committee.

The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Ray Marvin of Bart Township. Marvin has demonstrated effective leadership and a commitment to consensus building during the creation and adoption of the Southern Lancaster County Comprehensive Plan, which was adopted by nine of the 12 municipalities in the Southern End. Marvin has served as a supervisor for more than 15 years and has held the role of chairman. He became the Bart Township representative on the Southern Lancaster County InterMunicipal Council and is the vice chairman. Martin also represents the Southern Region on the LCPC.

The LCPC partnered with the Lancaster County Coali-

tion for Smart Growth to present student project awards. The coalition put up the prize money for the awards.

A Leadership Award was presented to fifth-graders at Ephrata Intermediate School for their program Ephrata Eats. Students conducted a survey to identify preferences for a coffee, tea, smoothie or cupcake. Students developed their menu item and created a commercial pitch and video for the new menu item. Selected entries were featured on local restaurants’ menus for a set amount of time.

A Leadership Award was presented for the project “A Long Walk to Water,” created by 92 third-graders at Clay Elementary School. Students at the school engaged in a unit on the importance of water and the global water crisis. Students developed a simulation of the effort and challenges of those needing water across the globe. A collection of $1,300 was donated to Water for South Sudan, and 72 gallons of water were donated to Ephrata Area Social Services.

A Leadership Award was presented to Lancaster Clean Water Partners for its Clean Water Projects in Pequea Creek Watershed. As part of the projects, four Plain Sect farmers and partners from public, private and nonprofit sectors are collaborating to implement practices that improve the health of both their operation and water quality in a small tributary of Pequea Creek in Paradise Township.

An Achievement Award was presented for the Safe Harbor Bridge Rehabilitation project in Manor Township.

Restoration of the 125-foothigh trestle bridge began in 2015 and was finally completed and opened in June 2022. The entire 0.3-mile deck was replaced with 2,170 tons of concrete and wooden side rails at a cost of $9 million. The project was designed to be a showcase bridge with glass deck windows, bird viewing binoculars, an elevated viewing area and a pavilion. The bridge connects the 23-mile Enola Low Grade Rail Trail.

The Quarryville Active Transportation Plan in Quarryville Borough received an Achievement Award. Implementation of the transportation plan will assist the borough in improving its nonmotorized transportation network by developing a system of nonmotorized transportation connections and contributing to a more equitable transportation network for people of all income levels, ages and abilities.

The Lancaster2040 Summit presented by the Lancaster County Coalition for Smart Growth and Tenfold was recognize with an Achievement Award. On March 31, 2022, the summit brought together the business, nonprofit, government and education sectors at Millersville University’s Ware Center to discuss Lancaster County’s challenges and opportunities. The Lancaster2040: Thinking Beyond Boundaries Summit focused on problem solving while working together to achieve the best for Lancaster.

A Merit Award was presented to the City of Lancaster for its Vision Zero Action Plan. The plan sets

goals and defines actions to move Lancaster toward eliminating traffic-related deaths and serious injuries by 2030.

Landis Communities was presented a Merit Award for its Landis Place on King, an innovative project in the heart of Lancaster city. It is a mixed-use building with 79 apartments, 41 interior parking spaces, a restaurant and United Way offices. Located at 239 W. King St., it will provide middle market and affordable housing with services for those age 55 and over. This project will be a nearly $28 million investment in the neighborhood. Landis Communities is also raising money to subsidize 10% of the apartments for long-term affordable housing rents.

what they endure every day,” Helm said.

Not long after the accident, Helm’s husband was in an accident on their property. She was amazed by the prompt response they received after calling 911, and she began to think of ways that Britain Hill could support local first responders. Shortly after, the COVID-19 pandemic hit and Helm decided to develop a new wine called Southern End Love. For each bottle that was purchased, Britain Hill donated $1 each to four local emergency service organizations: the Robert Fulton Fire Company, Quarryville Fire Company, Wakefield EMS and the Quarryville Police Foundation. The proceeds from the wine sales assisted with a variety of the organizations’ expenses during a time when they couldn’t host their regular fundraisers.

Meal includes: chicken, baked potato, applesauce, roll/butter, whoopie pie & drink.

Rawlinsville Volunteer Fire

Helm organized the First Responders Appreciation Night at Britain Hill to announce the release of Southern End Love and to garner support for first responders. It was held as soon as pandemicrelated restrictions were lifted, and Helm has continued the tradition every year since.

This year, the First Responders Appreciation Night will take place on Saturday, July

frompg 1

15, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The free event will include live music, food trucks, activities for kids and interactive demonstrations from emergency personnel. Members of the Robert Fulton Fire Company and the Quarryville Fire Company will offer tours of their fire engines and present a rescue demonstration. EMTs from the Wakefield EMS will provide CPR demonstrations and educate attendees on the types of equipment that they use on call. The event will also include prize drawings to raise additional funds for each organization. “It’s a fundraiser, a show of appreciation and a way to spread awareness all in one,” Helm said.

Inside the venue, local vendors, artisans and small businesses will sell their wares. Each merchant pays a fee to reserve a space, which adds to the amount that Britain Hill donates to first responders.

Britain Hill hosts a variety of other events throughout the year that benefit nonprofits in the community. On Saturday, Sept. 30, the winery will host a function to benefit local animal rescues. Participating organizations will offer information on equine therapy, raise awareness of puppy mills and dog fighting and seek homes to adopt rescued pets.
