Community Support Requested For Senior Celebration By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“We wanted to give the kids something. They’ve missed so much this year,” said Kristen Dombach. “This is one way we can give back and bless them before they move on.” Dombach and Sherri Bleacher are cochairs of the Solanco High School postprom committee, which is made of seniors’ parents. When the 2018-19 school year ended, the committee had already held its first fundraiser and was brainstorming themes for this year’s post-prom. However, with the closure of school buildings and the prohibition of large gatherings, prom and postprom were canceled. Now that it appears that Lancaster County will be moving into the green phase of reopening this summer, the post-prom committee has retooled its

original plans and will host a prom/senior celebration on Saturday, Aug. 1, the day after Solanco High School’s slated outdoor graduation event. “We thought this would be our best chance for this,” Dombach said, suggesting that if students come back from college, military postings, or wherever in the world they might be for the graduation event, they might be able to stay an extra day for the class party. The prom will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Kreider Building of the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, with the celebration taking place on the upper ballfield and in the SECA pool from 9 p.m. to midnight. The Kreider Building will be elegantly decorated, Dombach said, adding, “We want to create some kind of fun entrance, but beyond that, it will be an

attractive, formal-looking event.” Formalwear is welcome, as many people had already purchased fancy attire for prom. There will be space to change into casual clothing for outdoor activities after the catered meal and dancing. Dombach noted that giant inflatables will be available for play during the senior celebration. There is no cost for members of the Class of 2020 to attend the prom/senior celebration. Guests are welcome, with the same rules in place as for prom: guests must be under age 21, and they must provide identification at the event. Registration for seniors and their guests is required by Tuesday, June 30, so the committee can finalize plans accordingly. The Kreider Building will be open to the public for a walkthrough on Aug. 1 from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Then, visitors are See Prom/Senior Celebration pg 5

“Prior to COVID-19, we couldn’t keep up with the demand for our services,” commented Karen Gerth, founder and executive adviser of Keystone

Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS). “Many of our volunteers seem to find a population or type of visit that they enjoy and that is a good fit for their pets so they may focus in that area.” Gerth reported that KPETS currently has 443 registered human volunteers and 476 registered animals, as some of the volunteers have multiple pets that work with them. The teams provide more than 10,000 hours of visitation every year in communities throughout southcentral Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. “More and more facilities, agencies, and organizations are becoming aware of the benefits of the human/animal interaction, and KPETS is a way to implement that benefit,” Gerth remarked. Schmitt came to Solanco in 1998 and has taught third, fourth, and fifth grades over the past 22 years at Providence, Quarryville, and Bart-Colerain elementary schools. He has worked at Bart-Colerain since 2005. “It is truly an honor to be recognized as a Distinguished Teacher,” he said. “This designation ultimately comes from the students’ motivation and inspiration for learning. As each student finds the love for coming to school, wanting to learn, and being part of a team, we are able to soar to levels never previously imagined. It was amazing to see how the students continued this ‘above and beyond’ energy and engagement over the past few months with remote learning.” Eligibility requirements for the Distinguished Teacher award include a master’s degree, level II or permanent certification, and a

minimum of 10 years in education, with at least three years in the Solanco School District. Teachers are nominated for the award by their colleagues or the principal of their school. Of the nominated teachers, no more than six - three elementary and three secondary teachers - may be selected at a time. Teachers who are nominated for the award must complete an application to be considered for selection as a Distinguished Teacher. The district’s supervision committee chooses a selection committee, consisting of teachers and administrators, to review the applications and guidelines in selecting teachers to be honored as Distinguished Teachers. Orr and Schmitt will officially be inducted into the Distinguished Teacher program at the Solanco School Board meeting on Monday, Aug. 24.

Richard Haas was a “city kid” from Philadelphia, but his dream was “to grow things.” Fast forward, and the dream that Richard built - and grew - is now celebrating 50 years as Cherry Hill Orchards, a well-known farmers market in Lancaster County. The Orchard Outlet and Garden Center is located at 400 Long Lane, Lancaster. In his early days in Lancaster County, Richard worked for others, but he always wanted to operate his own business. His determination and persistence fueled his vision for the orchards once he took over the property, which was under the Shenk’s Farm name, in 1970. He renamed it Cherry Hill Orchards. After a first decade of growing, transporting and selling apples and peaches to a farmers market, he built and opened the

outlet store building in 1980. Over the years, incremental changes and additions were made. Early on, the operation began practicing conservation and stewardship of the environment. Richard noted how appreciative he is of the many customers over these years. “Their continued patronage allows us to protect and preserve the land, as well as offer families a safe homegrown (option),” he said. Today, the operation grows 30 varieties of cherries on 23 acres, 45 varieties of apples on 45 acres, and 40 varieties of nectarines and peaches on 45 acres. There are also five acres for sweet corn and five acres for pumpkins, along with acres for plums and apricots. Over 17 years ago, Richard passed the day-to-day operations and ownership to his son, Tom Haas. Several years ago, Tom was presented with the 2017 Outstanding Grower of the Year award by the State Horticultural Association of Pennsylvania. Tom has served on the state board and numerous committees involved in research projects to benefit the state fruit industry. Tom learned a great deal about growing and merchandising treeripened fruit through working at the family business since he was a young boy. He gleaned knowledge from Richard, a member of the International Fruit Tree Association, who has toured operations in other countries to learn about new fruit varieties and best growing practices. “Over the years, I’ve always enjoyed the change of seasons and the different challenges with each,” Tom shared. He said the various seasons provide the team the opportunity to grow the unique varieties of quality produce that Cherry Hill Orchards is known for. “We’ve provided people the best possible product we can offer, with outstanding varieties at different prices,” said Tom, who added that he keeps up with industry trends.

Celebrating Cherry Hill Orchards’ 50th anniversary are (front, from left) Ryan Shenk, market manager; Phyllis Shenk, nursery manager; Richard Haas, founder and grower; Tom Haas, grower and previous owner; and (back) new owners Craig McCleaf and Corey McCleaf. Nearly a quarter of the overall fruit grown on the large property is marketed as pick-your-own (PYO), and about half is sold retail through the Orchard Outlet store. The other quarter of the crop, mostly apples and peaches, is sold wholesale. Tom said, “New varieties are continually planted to be able to offer customers the best flavored, highly colored fruit.” Cherry Hill Orchards’ flavorings and colorings are the result of “the growing and picking care taken,” he added, “through a management process where we’ve learned about soil, root stock, minerals, and when to pick at just the right time and get our product into cold storage for sale.” Richard noted that the PYO periods throughout growing seasons are popular among Lancaster County families. “It’s a great teaching opportunity where youngsters and families, especially, can learn where fruit comes from,” he said. “And you can’t get it any fresher.” Recently, the Haas family announced a major transition for continuing the current operation and growth of the Cherry Hill Orchards. In February 2020, Tom officially sold the business to two Pennsylvania brothers with a 20-year background in fruit growing. Corey McCleaf and Craig McCleaf were partners in a produce-growing operation in Adams County. Tom said Corey and Craig were “hand-picked” by him to take over his family business. Tom remarked that he admires the brothers’ abilities, knowledge, and work ethic. “They come from a fifth generation of fruit growers,” he noted.

Corey said he and Craig are excited for this opportunity, adding, “I love to help things grow, to harvest them and then sell them to customers who really appreciate straight-from-the-farm fruit.” Craig added, “Cherry Hill will always be Cherry Hill, and we will continue to offer the quality of products and goodness that loyal customers have come to know.” Cherry Hill Orchards employs about 25 people during the summer season, with about 12 in the offseasons. The Garden Center is currently filled with many varieties of colorful flowers and plants. Also available are potting soil and containers, with knowledgeable staff ready to share expertise. In addition to the fruits in season, the Orchard Outlet offers baked goods, jams and jellies, jarred and canned fruits, salsas, honey, assorted beverages, fruit baskets, fruit pies, fresh vegetables, and other seasonal items. Apple cider in season is another popular featured item. June is the month for cherries, so readers should call the store at 717-872-9311 to check picking hours and availability. Picked cherries will also be available while supplies last. Tom and Richard still frequent the operation, helping out on the property, aiding in the transition, and acting as mentors. Cherry Hill Orchards is open on Mondays though Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with picking hours on Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The business is closed on Sundays. Additionally, the postprom committee is accepting donations of funds, grocery store gift certificates, and beverages in bottles or cans. Also needed are an event photographer, a french fry stand, a funnel cake stand, and a milkshake stand. Dombach noted that due to the shutdown, the committee was unable to hold three fundraisers. The group is committed to doing its best to host an enjoyable evening for the students, and it wanted to offer

admission free of charge so that difficult financial circumstances would not prevent anyone from attending. An ongoing challenge facing post-prom in general is storage space, and Dombach shared that while the members of the committee change each year, a consistent place to store props and other supplies from year to year is important. The group needs an indoor weatherproof area for storage or land to park one or two tractor-trailers that currently house post-prom supplies. The committee reuses walls and other building supplies each year to help reduce the cost of the event. Anyone who would like to participate in the Solanco prom/senior celebration as an attendee, volunteer, or supporter, as well as those with storage solutions, may email Dombach at kristendom@epix.net.

distraction to cancer patients and other hospitalized individuals, encourage adults and children in all different types of therapy sessions, and support reluctant learners and struggling readers. “Visiting schools can be anything from reading programs to working with life skills or multiple disability classes. The pet can motivate or calm in ways that amaze the staff (members),” Gerth said. “We’ve heard over and over again about residents in health care or hospice settings who finally smile or even communicate when the therapy pet is with them.” With the stay-at-home orders suspending in-person visits, KPETS volunteers utilized social media and other communication technologies to stay in touch with their clients. Some teams recorded themselves reading stories with their pets, while others encouraged children to read to their own animals. Virtual meetings were held with hospital and school staff members to know they are being thought of. One team created a video featuring a day in the life of a therapy dog under quarantine for a life skills class. The students were curious to see how therapy dogs were being affected by the situation, Gerth said. Teams also made a special video for the Class of 2020 at Warwick High School. “We had a very special bond with this class two years ago when they lost three students within a few weeks,” Gerth said. “We wanted to wish them well, congratulate them, and let them know how proud we are of them and how honored we were to be a part of their lives during that most sad time.” With Pennsylvania beginning to reopen, KPETS is also considering how to begin to make visits again. Gerth asserted that guidelines will be in place to ensure the safety of the clients, volunteers, and pets. Any facility or organization that would like to host a KPETS team visit for the benefit of its staff members, clients, or students may submit a request at www.kpets.org. The ConSERVANTory is meant to be an alternative to summer camps, so it will likely not continue into the fall, Bauer remarked. “But we will continue to offer our usual youth theater programs throughout the year, whether we’re able to return to in-person sooner, or whether we need to continue to find online alternatives,” he added. The Teen Company and Apprentice Company are currently running online. Registration was limited to 40 for the intensive programs that meet weekly and include homework. A showcase performance for those programs is slated for October. The group classes are educational rather than interactional, and there will not be a culminating performance at the end, both of which constitute a significant departure from the theater camps youths have come to expect from Servant Stage Company. “Theater education has always been a big part of Servant Stage’s mission, and that program continues to grow each year,” Bauer remarked. “We definitely prefer inperson and didn’t plan to move our educational program to an online setting, but given the current circumstances, we wanted to do all we could to still offer our usual opportunities for youth to continue their training in the performing arts.” In the first three days that registration was open, more than 100 registrations were filed for classes. In place of its usual summer theater camps, Servant Stage Company has launched an online theater training program called The ConSERVANTory, offering virtual theater classes for youths ages 10 to 18. The youth theater education program has been a growing part of Servant Stage in recent years, with more than 200 students taking part in its theater camps and classes each summer. Due to health restrictions and safety concerns, some of this year’s camps have been canceled, but Servant Stage remains committed to offering theater training through alternative methods. Summer classes began on June 23 and are slated to run through Thursday, July 16. They will be livestreamed and will primarily be taught as masterclasses,

executive director Johnathan Bauer said. “The students are primarily observers, but they are all live (classes), and students will have the opportunity to ask questions,” he added. “We are also offering private lessons in singing, dancing, or acting with several of the instructors, which would be even more interactive.” The classes will also be recorded, so if students have difficulty accessing the livestream, they may receive a link to view the class at a later date. Each class will run for 75 minutes, and classes will be taught by a variety of theater professionals from Lancaster County and elsewhere. Instructors will include Glen Brodersen, Jordanne Brodersen, Andrea Calderon, Wally Calderon, Brandon Cameron, Brance Cornelius, Katelyn Coryell, Jacob Daniel Cummings, Kelly Donah, Amber Emerson, Chris Faith, Rebekah Hill, Ray Hilton, Amanda Lewis, Derek Martin, Danielle Poznanovic, Amanda Lewis, Sarah Watson, and Reji Woods. The topics covered during the classes will focus the general areas of dance, vocal performance, and acting, as well as specifics such as auditioning, improvisation techniques, stage crew opportunities, costume design, makeup design, directing, and more. The group classes will be offered following the paywhat-you-will model utilized for many of Servant Stage Company’s productions. Fees have been set for private lessons.

The City of Lancaster will host Celebrate Lancaster, presented by title sponsor Fulton Bank, on Friday, June 26, with the festivities taking place throughout Lancaster city. As part of its Memorial Day observance, the Lancaster George Ross Society - National Society, Children of the American Revolution (N.S.C.A.R.) joined the Red Rose Chapter, Blue Star Moms in placing American flags at veterans’ graves at Lancaster Cemetery and St. Mary’s Cemetery. Members of the Donegal Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Chapter participated, along with other groups and members of the community in the event organized by Lancaster AMVETS Post 19. “After meeting the Blue Star Moms to receive flags, we split up to search for veteran graves,” said George Ross Society president Stewart Carter. “We wore masks as necessary to be safe during this time. We placed flags at all veteran graves we found and also replaced old flags with new ones and gave the old flags to the AMVETS who will retire them. We quietly thanked each veteran by name for his service.” “Remembering American veterans who sacrificed their lives for our country and for our freedom is important,” Stewart continued. “We need to honor them with our respect. We had a really fun time placing the flags as a community. We are grateful to AMVETS Post 19 and to the Blue Star Moms, and we look forward to doing this again next year.” The Lancaster George Ross Society - N.S.C.A.R. was founded in 1948. The N.S.C.A.R. was founded in 1895 and is known as the oldest and largest patriotic organization for youths in the United States. Any boy or girl under the age of 22 is eligible for N.S.C.A.R. membership if he or she is lineally descended from a man or woman who, with unfailing loyalty, rendered material aid to the cause of American independence as a soldier, sailor, civil officer, or recognized patriot in one of the several colonies or states, or of the United States.

Lancaster Farm Sanctuary Has A New Home By Francine Fulton

In order to better accommodate its current group of rescued cows, sheep, goats, pigs and other farmed animals, as well as to provide space for even more animals in need, the Lancaster Farm Sanctuary recently relocated to a larger facility. The nonprofit sanctuary, founded in the summer of 2017 by Sarah Salluzzo and Jonina Turzi, was previously located at 558 Milton Grove Road South in Elizabethtown. The sanctuary’s new address is 1871 Milton Grove Road, Mount Joy. Although the new location is only 2 miles away from the previThe Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, which was opened in the summer ous farm, the new property has of 2017 in Elizabethtown by Jonina Turzi and Sarah Salluzzo much more pasture space. “The (not shown), recently moved to a larger location in Mount Joy. previous farm was about 5 acres

but only 3 was habitable, because there was a creek and wetlands,” explained board member Sara Petrosky. “The new farm is almost 18 acres, and almost all of it is pasture.” The biggest benefit of the new location is that the sanctuary will not have to turn down as many requests by area police, humane workers and others who are seeking help for farmed animals in life-or-death situations. “We have people asking almost daily, ‘Can you take in this animal?’ A lot of times the requests are by the police. We also get calls from good Samaritans or neighbors,” Petrosky noted. “(The new location) will enable us to take in a lot more animals so we don’t have to say no so often.” She noted that when an animal first comes to the farm, it is examined by a veterinarian before it is allowed to have contact with the other animals. Animals that cannot be accommodated are referred to partnering sanctuary organizations. One of the site’s newest resident is Orville, a small lamb, who suffers from a bone infection and is currently on medication. “He couldn’t keep up with the other lambs, and someone brought him to the farm,” Petrosky explained. “We do the ‘Great Orville Watch’ where volunteers sit with him in two-hour segments.” Other residents of the farm include two pigs, Willa and Charlotte, who were found by humane police officers locked in a small shed; two dairy cows

Volunteers also spend time building relationships with the animals since the sanctuary is the animals’ forever home. “We are not like other rescues where they are looking for homes for the animals,” Petrosky pointed out. “In our case, they all come to live here for the rest of their lives.” The sanctuary is an all-volunteer organization, and it relies on community donations to pay for veterinarians’ services, food for the animals, bedding and

Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, tours of the site were offered every Saturday from May through October. “Since the isolation started in mid-March, we have been doing virtual tours that have been widely viewed,” Petrosky said. “ We also have bedtime stories with the animals on Thursday and Sunday nights at 7:30 p.m., where we read children’s books to our baby goats and sheep.” The farm also offered a yoga program that included a one-hour class followed by a 30-minute walking tour of the sanctuary. It will all be included.” The school, which will initially accommodate 60 children ranging in age from six weeks to 5 years old, will embody a new perspecive on care. “Our family-focused approach to child care revamps the traditional model,” said Goropoulos, who noted the goal will be not just preparing children for school, but helping get them ready for life by making health and wellness part of the curriculum. Special benefits at the school that will be offered to all students and families will include a family wellness coach and a family wellness caseworker. Carol Johnston, family wellness coach, will meet

with every family that comes into the center. “(Johnston) will help families learn to work within the community and with one another,” said Goropoulos, who added that every family will have an assessment. “We will evaluate how the child is doing, what family dynamics look like, and areas of potential improvement, challenges they might be facing, and strategies (they could utilize),” said Goropoulos, who added that families will have access to these services as long as they are enrolled. If necessary, the family could be referred to a family wellness caseworker, who will act as a resource. The idea for a school grew out of the Healthy Columbia Project CHI engaged in more than two years ago. “We used to do small grant making to organizations that were working with children in addition to our dental program,” said Goropoulos, who noted that the board was looking for ways do more for children. “(They wanted) a strategy that would transform how communities were responding to health and developing health care habits,” he recalled. Healthy Columbia worked to identify

areas common to healthy communities, including housing and neighborhoods, food access, early childhood education, and access to health and health care. “These are the four components to impact a community … to put that community in a better position to be healthy and thrive,” said Goropoulos. In response to what the board members learned, CHI decided to build a school. “It’s a seven- to 10-year investment to build these structures and programs, and then they become supported by the community,” said Goropoulos, who noted that first discussion of the project dates back to December 2017. The project was approved in 2018, and the organization then purchased the building at 401 Locust St., along with the adjacent parking lot at 403 Locust. CHI broke ground for the school in May 2019. “We gutted the second and third floors of the existing building and added 10,000 square feet Michelle Keim, food service and nutrition manager, is excited about to both floors over the top of the the progress being made on the kitchen at St. John Neumann parking lot,” said Goropoulos. a few weeks away from the building being finished when they shut down,” said Goropoulos, who noted that despite the shutdown, the school was due to be completed at the end of June and is now slated to open in early November. The organization is working hard to meet new guidelines while offering high value to participating families. “If we can support family functioning to reduce the possibility of adverse childhood experiences, the savings to the community and the positive health results to children will be astronomical,” said Goropoulos. and sometimes even acts out certain scenes. When COVID-19 arrived, the classes were closed for the rest of the year. However, Early Head Start/Head Start staff in Lancaster and Lebanon counties have been meeting with families on Zoom, continuing as much of their program as they can virtually. They also decided to reconnect with their students through virtual story times. Early Head Start/Head Start already had a strong Facebook following, so this platform was chosen for the story times. Staff members from both counties read books in both English and Spanish. While the primary goal of the videos is to maintain a relationship with the families, they are also a good way to introduce the program and its staff to the community at large, which is important during recruitment season. Early Head Start/Head Start reported that on average, the posts reach more than 1,200 people, with encouraging comments and many shares. Videos have been uploaded on Saturday mornings since mid-April and will continue at least through June. To view the videos, readers may visit the “Lebanon County Head Start” page on Facebook.

Children in the LancasterLebanon IU13’s Early Head Start/Head Start programs have been taking part in virtual programs, including virtual story times, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Typically, in the Early Head Start/Head Start programs, family service workers and home visitors are introduced to children at a very young age, and they become trusted adults who work with the parents as a team to teach them vital new skills. The story times are intended to foster early language learning and a love for reading. During story time, every child sits and listens to a staff member while he or she reads aloud, points out pictures, speaks in silly voices,

YWCA Receives Grant Funding YWCA Lancaster, 110 N. Lime St., Lancaster, is the recipent of $10,000 through a grant from Lancaster Cares, a collaborative project between the Lancaster County Community Foundation and United Way of Lancaster County. The purpose of the funding is to help local nonprofit organizations expand their capacity to reach more people more quickly. YWCA Lancaster will assist its residents and clients with basic needs, including food, diapers, wipes, and formula to limit trips and exposure outside the residence. Additional cleaning supplies and maintenance staff hours to repair and maintain rooms for residents is also a focus. The grant period began on May 4 and will run through Monday, Aug. 31. For more information about the Lancaster Cares COVID-19 response fund or to donate, readers may visit www.lancfound.org. The Lancaster Cares fund is designed to complement the work of public health officials while expanding local capacity to address the COVID-19 outbreak as efficiently as possible.

Virtual “Walk Run For Life” Raises Funds Align Life Ministries (formerly Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services) concluded its 34th annual Walk Run for Life on May 9. More than 200 registered individuals participated in the virtual event and either walked, ran a 5K, or did another form of fun activity to support the event. So far, more than $235,000 has been raised toward the $255,000 goal, and donations and pledges are still being processed. These funds help the ministry provide immediate life-sustaining services to families in need. The organization recently delivered essential baby supplies to a young mother of an infant, and then she enrolled in virtual parenting classes with her client advocate. Next year’s Walk Run for Life will take place on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at The Junction Center in Manheim. Readers may visit www.face book.com/alignlifeministries to view event photos and www.youtube .com/watch?v=N9rabr-vHCI&t=9s to view the closing video.
