Southern Hope’s July Giveaway BY COURTNEY MENGEL
The Southern Hope Foundation (SHF) is a nonprofit organization that aids families in need within southern Lancaster County. In the past, SHF has provided families with presents, food, and funds for utility payments during
holiday seasons. The foundation has also assisted individuals during emergency situations, including financial assistance with newborn needs, medical emergencies, and natural disasters such as house fires. The goal of SHF is to continue these efforts and help year-round. See Giveaway pg 7
The Schoolroom Museum will be bolstered by the genealogy collections of (from left) J. Barry Girvin, Shirley Girvin, Sandra Shenk, and John Girvin.
Museum To Receive Genealogy Collections andra Shenk, archivist of the Schoolroom Museum at Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church, 1188 Valley Road, Quarryville, will gift her extensive genealogy collection to the Schoolroom Museum. Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church is known as the oldest Covenanter Presbyterian church in North America, with a history dating back to 1754. Its attached one-room school currently houses archives pertaining to the histories of Scottish immigrants and Bart Township schools. Shenk has been researching her family background for more than 50 years. Computers were not yet in widespread use when she began her work, so she made numerous trips
S
to libraries, courthouses, and churches. Whenever she came across a unique finding, she made a hard copy. Her primary documentation includes birth and death certificates, land grants, wills, and more. As a result of her extensive research, Shenk published two books in the early 2000s: one on Eckman family history and the other on Pickle family history. Shenk estimates that roughly 75% of current Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church members are connected to her genealogy collection. J. Barry Girvin, curator of the Schoolroom Museum, accepted Shenk’s genealogy collection into the archives. The genealogy collection will have a bookcase of its own, which is currently being made specifically
for the collection. “I think this is a worthwhile collection for the museum,” stated Shenk. “I hope a lot of people will be interested in this collection because of their family history.” In addition to Shenk’s contribution, J. Barry; his wife, Shirley; and their son, John, will donate their own genealogy collections to the museum. They will gift two large books containing extensive histories of the Welks and Girvins. J. Barry said he hopes to open the Schoolroom Museum in September for one day a week. Currently, the museum is open for visitors, but only by appointment. For more information about Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church or the Schoolroom Museum, visit www.oldcovchurch.com.

Goodbye, High School The Solanco High School (SHS) Class of 2021 valedictorian, Faith Redcay, and salutatorian, Kayla McCauley, addressed their classmates during the SHS commencement ceremony on June 11. The daughter of Robert and Patricia Redcay of Quarryville, Faith has been selected for the Professional Horticulture Program at Longwood Gardens. Kayla, daughter of Kolin and Amanda McCauley of Quarryville, will attend the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences, where she will major in nursing. Faith noted she was a little overwhelmed to learn that she would speak to her classmates, those in attendance at graduation, and those watching on YouTube. “Like a lot of you, I had a difficult year, but I am truly thankful for the struggles and adversity that we’ve lived through,” said Faith. “I know first-hand this class has grown. Our relationships with each other, our families, and community have grown.” Faith included the most important lesson she has learned this year in her graduation speech. “When going through struggles, no matter how much we can try to muster up our own strength, the only source of joy that helps us through comes from Jesus Christ,” she stated. In her speech, Kayla encouraged her classmates to remain true to themselves.
“We are resilient, we are driven, and we are extraordinary. We are the Class of 2021,” she said. “Once we enter the real world, it can be easy to stray from ourselves and our goals. We should not feel pressured to turn into someone who we are not, but feel confident in ourselves and our capabilities to find our own happiness.” Graduation speaker Michael DeBerdine, Solanco Class of 1983 and CEO of Rhoads Energy in Lancaster, met with seven SHS students
a month ago to talk about Solanco and the atmosphere of southern Lancaster County. DeBerdine noted that he was impressed. “This school is blessed with future farmers, teachers, military service, HVAC technicians, pilots, to name a few, and some that are taking a gap year because it’s the right thing to do,” stated DeBerdine. When Solanco School District superintendent Brian Bliss addressed the Class of 2021, he quoted author Lois

Porches And Posies Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church (CLPC), 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, will host a Porches and Posies Garden Tour to benefit sanctuary renovations of the church. This rain-or-shine garden tour will take place on Friday, July 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Notable changes to the church include the newly exposed balcony, the restored ceiling with gold leaf details, antique German stained glass windows, two fieldstone additions on either side of the bell tower, and the wooden pews circa 1914. The tour will consist of 12 different homes located in Willow Street, Holtwood, Quarryville, Pequea, Peach Bottom, and Drumore. Among them
are two Amish gardens, a lawn with 350 roses, water features, and more. “This is a great opportunity for people to have fun and enjoy the day,” stated Cindy Derr, member of CLPC. “As a congregation, we open the church to people, and now we’re opening homes and gardens to them.” The garden tour will offer visitors the chance to explore the Southern End and gather inspiration for their own yards. “This past year, a lot of people have spent time at home making their own oasis or haven,” said CLPC member Anna Mary Barcus. “Now, people can get out and see what others have been up to.” There will be a pop-up garden shop at the home of Tom and Marty Henry, 1258 Oregon Hollow Road, Holtwood. Sick of hours of traffic heading to Maryland or Jersey shores? Not to mention crowded beaches and boardwalk shops that make a big dent in your wallet. You don’t have to go down the shore to enjoy a beach vacation. Pennsylvania offers an entirely different beach experience. More than likely, if you live in PA, you’re within an hour or two of a beach. Most of the lakefront beaches in the commonwealth are in our pristine state parks, but you’ll find private and public beaches throughout the state. Thirty-five of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks have beaches that are typically open and free to the public for swimming from late May to mid-September. Many of these beaches have a swim-atyour-own-risk policy. They are generally open from 8 a.m. to sunset, daily, but may have adjusted schedules, so check the website before hitting the road.
