Moms’ Day Out To Focus On Hope
We The People First Fridays will present “Your Life Is a Story” on Friday, July 6, at 7 p.m., at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The program will feature Gnome Countryside’s Richard Humphreys. Also, from 6 to 8 p.m., the Ware Center will host an opening reception in the Regitz Gallery for “Fantasy,” an exhibit from painter Nicholas Pastal. Both events are free. Humphreys will present his story. At the age of 14, Humphreys developed type I, or juvenile, diabetes. The chronic disease inspired his adventure-filled life, including a trip around the world that he ended by riding his 10-speed bicycle from Oregon to Pennsylvania while managing the disease. He directed Ho Mida Koda, a camp in Ohio for children living with diabetes, and in 2007, at the age of 65, he walked from the camp to his home in southern Lancaster County, See Ware Center pg 7
When Cristin Germaine planned the first Dare to Dream Single Moms’ Day Out in 2016, she was not sure how well the idea would be received. “When I started the journey, I didn’t know what to expect. I was just hoping to reach some single moms,” shared Germaine. That first year, 90 mothers took part, and in 2017, 125 women participated. “This year, within the first week of opening the registration, I had 70 single moms signed up, and now we’re at about 160,” said a delighted Germaine. “It’s fantastic how friends are bringing their friends.” The 2018 event has been planned for Saturday, July 21, at Calvary Church,

We’d love to include them as part of this event as well.” It takes about 150 volunteers to hold the annual Single Moms’ Day Out. Individuals who wish to volunteer may do so through the website mentioned previously. Germaine hopes to raise $20,000 to fund the 2018 event. A banquet held in May raised about $10,000, and donations have brought the fund to about $15,000. Those who would like to help fund the event may do so online at the website. Saturday all registered campers will be able to observe some live demonstrations performed by local firefighters and will get to visit various stations gaining hands on experience.
then rejected hosting a race because they did not feel qualified to plan it. Incidentally, Price has never planned a 5K event, but she has participated in numerous races, and her brother has organized many. She also has an enthusiastic team surrounding her. Annamarie Dixon has helped to organize 5K races, and fellow team members Trey and Danielle Little and Matt and Megan Boulden have access to useful expertise, skills, and resources. Community members have also offered their support, and Price noted that Solanco crosscountry coach Craig Ausel will lend his timing equipment for the race. “The main purpose (of the race) is to raise awareness about Solid Rock,” Price said, explaining that she was impacted by videos about the youth organization that were shown at her church. “It would have been a beneficial resource for my family (when I was in school),” she added. During the school year, Solid Rock Youth Ministries offers afterschool activities for students in kindergarten through ninth grade, and attendance each week averages about 70. Additionally, summer programs are available for students who will enter first through ninth

All activities are offered free of charge so that finances never cause a barrier to participation. “That’s why we’re raising money,” Dixon explained. “It’s neat to see how the Lord provides,” Nixon added. She shared that the organization would like to expand its offerings to include programs for high school students, and that will necessitate additional funding. Solid Rock also recently hired Corey Alfonso full time as the program director. “As Solid Rock is growing, we had a need to hire additional staff members,” Nixon said. Folks who register by Tuesday, July 31, will be guaranteed an event T-shirt and will receive a discount on the entrance fee. Discounts for groups of five or more people are also available. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Seminary students (front, from left) Ashley Markle, Katelyn Herrin, Sadie Ann Bowman, Faith Dryden, Bryce Ohl, and Kimberly Beck, (back) Aidan Fryar, Eric Vassilaros, Paul Abramson, Benjamin Ward, Tanner Marchant, David Johnson, Jr., Carter Hasson, Ethan Knarr, (not pictured) Morganne Browning, Amanda Buckheit, Sequoia Graver, MacGregor Henrichsen, and Alexa Lucas graduated from the program on May 27. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the York and Lancaster areas graduated 19 students during a ceremony on May 27 at 6 p.m. at the Lancaster Stake Center. The students attended early morning seminary classes every day before school from ninth through 12th grades. The high schoolers studied the four standard works of the church: the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. The graduates, listed by ward, are as follows. Lancaster Ward: Ethan Knarr. Lititz Ward: Kimberly Beck, Faith Dryden, Carter Hasson, MacGregor Henrichsen, and Eric Vassilaros. Shrewsbury Ward: Paul Abramson, Sadie Ann Bowman, Amanda Buckheit, and Benjamin Ward. West York Ward: Morganne Browning, Aidan Fryar, Sequoia Graver, Alexa Lucas, Ashley Markle, and Bryce Ohl. York Ward: Katelyn Herrin, David Johnson Jr., and Tanner Marchant. At the graduation ceremony, Ohl gave the opening prayer, and Beck, Marchant, and Markle delivered messages. The final
speaker was Eva Poff, a seminary graduate who now attends the Institute for Young Single Adults. Additionally, two seminary students performed a special musical number. Abramson sang “One Voice” and Ward played the cello while Abramson’s mother, Teri Sue Abramson, accompanied them on the piano. The conclusion to the ceremony was the recognition of students and the awarding of certificates of completion. Adam M. McBride, regional coordinator of the seminary and Institute programs, presented the graduates to the Stake president, Conrad Knudson. The diplomas and certificates were presented to the graduates. Knudson concluded with words of encouragement for the graduating youths. Dryden said the closing prayer. Many of the graduates will choose to go on and serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One of the aims of the seminary program is to give youths experience in teaching the Gospel.
