Quarryville Parks To Host SECA Fest, Concerts By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The parks of Quarryville will be the site of several events this summer. The summer concert series at Huffnagle Park, Oak Lane, Quarryville, will offer three performances, and SECA Fest will occupy the lower ballfield at Legion Memorial Park, 297 Park Ave., Quarryville. The concerts will be held on Saturdays, July 11 and Aug. 1 and 22, beginning at 7 p.m. Indian Summer Jars will perform on July 11, One Too Many is slated for Aug. 1, and Summit Hill Bluegrass Band will conclude the series on Aug. 22. Attendees may bring lawn

chairs and blankets and should maintain social distance when finding places to sit. The series is sponsored by the Quarryville Lions Club, and admission will be free of charge. No rain location will be offered this year, so interested individuals should visit www.facebook.com/ huffnagleparkconcerts to check for updates in the event of inclement weather. SECA Fest is a program of the Southern End Community Association (SECA). It will take place from 4 to 10 p.m. on July 11. Sunday, July 12, has been set as the rain date. The event will offer carnival games, See SECA Fest pg 3

Summit Hill Bluegrass Band will perform at Huffnagle Park in Quarryville on Aug. 22. Concerts in the park will also be held on July 11 and Aug. 1. Additionally, SECA Fest will take place in the lower ballfield at Legion Memorial Park in Quarryville on July 11.

EPC Golf Outing To Aid Good Samaritan Services Cyclists Invited To Pedal For Hope

Now more than ever, thanks to jobs and wages lost while the stay-at-home order was in place, resources for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing their homes are in demand. Thankfully, Good Samaritan Services (GSS), which serves individuals and families in Lancaster and Chester counties who have poverty-related needs, is prepared to help. “We provide

a wide spectrum of services that are customizable to each individual or family at whatever place they are at in their journey to stability,” said Shadoe Settle, GSS development and communications coordinator. “Our services are always expanding. Right now, we provide emergency shelter, residential housing, See EPC Golf Outing pg 12

The annual EPC Golf Outing on Sept. 25 will benefit Good Samaritan Services, which provides a range of services to assist individuals overcoming homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties.

New Hope Community Life Ministry, 248-A Maple Ave., Quarryville, introduced its signature Pedal for Hope bicycle ride fundraiser in March. However, as with other events this spring, the ride, originally set for April 18, was eventually canceled. Pedal for Hope is back on the calendar, but it will take place in a different format. Riding bicycles is still encouraged, but participants may choose when and where they ride, rather than descending on the New Providence Township section of the Enola Low Grade Trail on a specific day. See Pedal For Hope pg 2

New Hope Community Life Ministry board secretary John Girvin (left) and executive director Deb Riddell invite individuals and families to participate in the virtual version of Pedal for Hope, a fundraising event for the counseling center.

“This takes out the idea of asking a lot of people to be in one spot at one time, New Hope board secretary and event organizer John Girvin explained. “Out of state, upstate, even going to other trails in the county - we want to encourage that. You can sign up and go. To participate, individuals may register at www.newhopeministry.info/events/pedal -for-hope, ask others to sponsor them, climb onto the saddle, and ride as far as they choose. Minimum distances have been set, with 2 miles for families and 10 miles for individuals. The family or individual who completes the longest ride will receive a prize. Other prizes will be awarded for most sponsors, best creative photo from a ride, and most unique location for a ride. Directions for submitting photos are available at the registration page, and participants may also post pictures online with #pedalfornewhope. Rides must be completed by Saturday, Aug. 8, and Saturday, July 18, is the deadline to register. There is a cost to participate, with prices for individuals and families. T-shirts will be included in the registration fee, with one per individual rider and a maximum of four per family. Additional T-shirts may be purchased for a small fee. The garments will be ready after the ride is completed. The original fundraising target of $15,000 is still in place for this event. Girvin said he had hoped to make that money by attracting 150 riders as well as event sponsors. The new format opens up participation to people who would not have been able to ride on April 18 had the

The

event taken place as scheduled. Girvin also hopes that the renewed interest in outdoor activities inspired by three months of the stay-at-home order will attract additional riders. The proceeds from Pedal for Hope will be used by New Hope to continue offering private counseling, from personal concerns to family dynamics. “This is counseling to help people through a variety of things, Girvin said. “We’re faith-based, but anybody is welcome to come in. Girvin noted that the initial shutdown was a struggle for the organization and its clients, but eventually, counselors were able to meet with some clients using phones. New Hope’s Community Closet thrift store, 128 TownsEdge Drive, Quarryville, closed for several months, resulting in a loss of income. Thankfully, executive director Deb Riddell secured a grant that helped to cover the facility rental and other bills. In addition to impacting New Hope’s budget, the Community Closet’s closure affected community members who shopped there for clothing, accessories, and household items at reasonable prices. There was a social impact as well. “The Closet is more than just folks coming in and purchasing things, Girvin commented. “Volunteers will engage customers in conversation (and offer supportive listening). That’s been another blessing of that type of outreach. For more information about New Hope Community Life Ministry, readers may visit www.newhopeministry.info or call 717-786-2802.

EPC Golf Outing from pg 1 and housing support services to men, women, and families in Lancaster and Chester counties. Serving men is a new ability in Lancaster County, and we are very excited about it.” Although the need for the services provided by GSS has increased, the organization has been able to keep the lives of its existing participants stable, thanks to support from the community. “Our ability to provide support and guidance during this time enabled all of our participants to remain in their housing, pay their bills, and continue life as normally as possible during such an abnormal time,” Settle said. As with other organizations, the delivery of services had to change, requiring flexibility from both the GSS team members and participants. GSS continued to provide emergency shelter and residential housing services while maintaining stateissued safety requirements and conducting cautious intakes for new clients. GSS family resource coordinators met with participants via Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp, and other virtual-meeting software to provide housing support services. The financial impact of COVID-19 will be felt for a long time to come, and GSS expects the need for its services to increase, Settle said. The nonprofit organization depends on donations and fundraisers to operate. One such fundraiser is the golf outing hosted by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). “Our partnership with EPC and their willingness to organize such a wonderful event has been an incredible blessing, financially and relationally,” Settle remarked. “This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and it has continued to provide funds needed to perform all of our services.” “We recognize the impact that this nonprofit has on our own neighbors in the same areas that we serve as a company,” said EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “We’re honored to build this relationship with GSS to assist them in aiding families right here in our community.” The 2019 EPC Golf Outing raised $20,000, and the goal this year is to meet or surpass that total with the help of golfers and sponsors, Hillegas said. The 13th annual EPC Golf Outing will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times of 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. are available. The event had initially been planned for June. “Like many other events this year, we were faced with the decision to cancel or reschedule our event,” Hillegas commented. “We know how much this event impacts families right here in our Lancaster County and Chester County communities, so we made the decision to reschedule the June outing for September. The health and safety of our golfers and volunteers was the main driving force behind this decision, and we look forward to what a fall golf outing for this event will look like.” The Tee It Forward contest hole that was introduced last year will be continued. Hillegas noted that while this year’s event will include bag lunches from Trio Bar and Grill, chicken barbecue from Peters’ BBQ will also be available. Chicken barbecue had been a feature of the EPC Golf Outings a few years ago, and Hillegas and her team are pleased to bring it back.
