Burgerz & Burnouts 3.0 will be held at Living Stones Vineyard Church, 2292 Robert Fulton Highway, Peach Bottom, on Saturday, July 13. The official start time is noon, although folks are welcome to arrive as early as 9 a.m. The event will run “until the smoke clears,” said Jason Dillon, who created the event with Tim Zimmerman of Auto Dreamz. “(We) came up with the idea when we were sitting in his shop,” Dillon recalled. “It was supposed to be hood rat stuff, but (pastor) Bud (Stillman) said we’re nuts to do it in the street, so he invited us to the church parking lot.” The first event was held two years ago, and last year’s attendance doubled that of the inaugural event, attracting 70 vehicles and 300 spectators. The driveway in front of the church was thoroughly blackened

by the spinning tires. “It’s the only show of its kind that allows burnouts in this area,” Dillon said. The event is open to anything with wheels, and in addition to the typical hot rods and Harleys, the previous events have drawn riding mowers and semi-trucks. “Just come have fun,” Dillon invited. Burgers, hot dogs, coleslaw, chips, and beverages will be ready at noon, and the burnouts will begin somewhere between 1 and 2 p.m. “We’ll hang out, eat, do burnouts, then hang out more and talk,” Dillon said. Food and admission will be free of charge, but donations will be accepted. Door prizes will be awarded. Kobbie’s Kustom Pinstriping from Maryland will attend, offering freehand pinstriping at the event. “He does good work,” Stillman said of the artist. In the event of rain on July 13, the See Living Stones Vineyard pg 12

A new support group in southern Lancaster County has been formed to strengthen families facing addiction. The group has been named Storm Riders, a nod to the song “Riders on the Storm” by The Doors. “It’s for anyone in the family when they need support while riding the waves of the storm of fighting addiction,” explained Jackie Grimsey, who co-founded Storm Riders with Doug and Eileen Cwienk and Kevin and Sabrina Doyle. past few years, the festival featured a different variety because the Jet Stars were not ready early enough. Warmer weather in March and April this year have Jet Stars on schedule to be ripe for the festival, Rohrer said. Festival attendees may also purchase whole Jet Star tomatoes at the festival. In addition to the tomatobased sandwiches, the festival will sell sausage sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, chicken corn soup, fries, roasted corn, cotton candy, popcorn, funnel cakes, Italian ice, soft-serve ice cream, and plenty of fruit and cake. The kitchen will close at 9 p.m., although sales tend to die down around 8 p.m., the co-chairs noted. The festival will offer a variety of carnival games, a bounce house, and a barrel train. There will be opportunities to enter a drawing for a pair of 10-foot kayaks, a big screen television, an electronic tablet, or $100 cash prizes. Country band Borderline will perform on July 13, and Stu Huggens and the Black Hats will play on July 20. Both BRFR and the BRSG are staffed by volunteers. Additional help is needed to make the Tomato Festival a success. Folks may assist in the kitchen or with the games. Anyone who is interested may call Schock at 717-951-6411 and leave a message. To learn more about the Tomato Festival, folks may find “Washington Boro Tomato Festival to benefit Blue Rock Fire Rescue” on Facebook.

also hosts the Tomato Festival. “We do it for the community,” said Dick Schock, who shares festival co-chair duties with Carl Miller and Bob Howell. “If we stopped, the community would kick up a fuss.” While not much about the Tomato Festival has changed over the years - if it is not broken, why fix it? - a slight change has been made for this year’s event, which will be held on Saturdays, July 13 and 20, at Washington Boro Park, 2010 River Road. For the first time, the kitchen will open at 3 p.m., a full two hours before the carnival games and live music kick off. “They’re here at 3 o’clock anyway,” Schock remarked. “We’re hoping to eliminate the lines,” Miller explained. Folks traditionally queue up for tomato sandwiches and, in recent years, BLTs. In 2017, the BRSG sold 3,000 bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches during the two days of the festival. Last year’s numbers were down because the first night had a lot of rain and not as many folks came out. “We covered our expenses the last night,” Schock said. “If it rains, we will sell food.” The two sandwiches feature Washington Boro tomatoes grown by The Tomato Barn. Typically, the festival kitchen goes through 250 pounds of tomatoes a night. This year’s variety will be popular local favorite Jet Star, said Tomato Barn co-owner Tyler Rohrer. The

“Meditations On Loss” Program Slated At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, the community is invited to gather at Mulberry Art Studios to experience an evening of music and poetry. Organizers hope that the event, titled “Meditations on Loss,” may offer the opportunity for a little healing for those who are grieving. The program will be a meditation on the tragedy of life, loss, and time, transformed by music, nature, and poetry. Justin Hopkins will read two poems: Elizabeth Bishop’s “One Art,” a villanelle about the art of losing, and Donald Hall’s “Without,” a poem without punctuation on the loss of his wife. Christopher Brooks, violin, and Patrick White, bass, will interweave music among these poems, performing solo violin, solo electric bass, and violin and

The grant, which totals $10,025, will be used to alter (spay/neuter) adoptable animals at the organization’s Erie Avenue headquarters and Danville and Lancaster centers throughout the month of July. Every animal that is adopted from the Pennsylvania SPCA, regardless of location, is altered prior to leaving the facility, is upto-date on vaccines, and is microchipped. Children are eligible regardless of economic status or Masonic affiliation. The Orton-Gillingham approach is used as the basis for tutoring and tutor training. This method is a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach to language. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster opened in 2002 and has served more than 200 children. The 50th anniversary of cars built in 1969 will be the theme for the 38th annual car show, which will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 14. The field will open for car parking at 9 a.m. “(The model year) 1969, to me, was the end of an era,” commented Steve Loewen, who has worked to organize the show since its inception. “In the 1970s, everything changed.” Between 9 a.m. and noon, vintage cars will be lined up on the show field, while hit-and-miss engines and vintage tractors will be on view in the park. Antique tractors and hit-and-miss engines that are not being judged may be displayed free of charge. Cars will be judged in more than 30 classes. Pieter Hegeman II, a member of the Susquehanna Valley Camaro Club, will bring his 1969 Z28 Camaro with a General Motors Crossram engine that he purchased in Maryland 20 years ago. “They only made 107 of (these cars with the Crossram),” said Hegeman, “and there are less than 40 of them known to exist (at this time).” Hegemen explained that the engine had to be special ordered for the car and installed at the dealership. Because the cars were designed for racing, few have survived. Hegeman likes to tell the story of meeting one of the original designers, Jon Moss, developer of the Crossram motor, at a Super Chevy event at Maple Grove Dragway. “(Jon Moss) talked to me and said, ‘This is the real deal,’” recalled Hegeman. “I said, ‘I assumed it was,’ (but) I didn’t know who he was,” said Hegeman, who later obtained several autographs from Moss. Hegeman complimented Weaver and Loewen on how smoothly the show is organized and run. John Riggs of New Providence plans to bring his 1937 Chevy pickup that he converted to a street rod to the show. “My wife, Dorothy, found me (the truck) along the highway 12 years ago,” said Riggs. “She figured I would wait until I retired to (convert it).” Riggs purchased the truck around 2007, and he tore the frame off the next year. An experienced mechanic, Riggs completed the conversion around 2014 with help from his son and friends. “It’s never done,” said Riggs with a chuckle. Finished or

Living Stones Vineyard from pg 1 event will be held the following day, Sunday July 14, at the same time. For information, readers may call Dillon at 717847-0110. July 13 will also be the grand opening of the HOPE Chest, a new ministry of Living Stones and Preschool Pebbles. The HOPE Chest was created by Preschool Pebbles owner Drema Duncan, who has been informally connecting community members with free clothing, shoes, books, toys, and household items as needed. “We try to meet needs when people go through tough times,” Duncan said. Duncan has collected an assortment of items that have been organized at the church, where the HOPE Chest is located. The Peach Bottom and Revolving Door consignment shops are supporting the ministry with donations of unsold clothing. The items will be distributed as folks need them. No fees will be charged, but donations will be accepted and will be used to support Living Stones’ other ministries. As the HOPE Chest is run by volunteers, hours may change. They will be updated at the ministry’s Facebook page, “The HOPE chest.” Anyone who would like to help out or shop the closet may contact Duncan through the Facebook page or call or text her at 717-344-4790.

Pennsylvania travelers are invited to enjoy the newly expanded Pennsylvania Ice Cream Trail. After a popular inaugural season, the Pennsylvania Ice Cream Trail expanded from 12 creameries in eastern and southcentral Pennsylvania into three trails including a Western Pennsylvania Trail, with a total of 32 stops in these regions for 2019. Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) deputy secretary Carrie Fischer Lepore recently joined local and state officials to kick off the 2019 Ice Cream Trail season at Chester Springs Creamery at Milky Way Farm in Chester Springs. The creamery is on a historic 103-acre dairy farm that has been home to four generations of the Matthews family. It is one of 10 stops on the Eastern Pennsylvania Trail. Initiated in 2018, the trail is a partnership of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s (PDA) PA Preferred program, the DCED’s PA Tourism Office, and the Center for Dairy Excellence (CDE) to highlight dairy destinations across Pennsylvania. The program includes a passport that visitors can have stamped to earn prizes at stops along each trail. More information about creameries on the trail, including a downloadable passport, can be found at www.visitPA.com/scoops. Visitors who share photos from the trail using #PursueYourScoops may be featured on visitPA’s website and social media channels. The trails officially opened statewide on June 1. Dairy is the largest sector of Pennsylvania’s $135.7 billion agriculture industry, contributing $14.7 billion annually to the economy and supporting 52,000 jobs in the state. In 2018, PDA, PA Preferred, and CDE joined dairy farmers and industry advocates to kick off “Choose PA Dairy: Goodness That Matters,” a campaign to support Pennsylvania’s dairy industry by educating consumers on how to find and buy locally produced milk and the impact it has on Pennsylvania’s economy and the health of its residents. For travel inspiration, readers may visit www.pahappythoughts .com or www.facebook.com/visitPA. More about Pennsylvania farms and commonwealth initiatives to support dairy and other agriculture businesses is available at www.agriculture.pa.gov.
