Giving Back To The Community LCFCA Seeks Volunteers With Recruitment Campaign By Chelsea Peifer
Jared Artus began volunteering as a junior firefighter simply because he had always loved helping people and he loved fire trucks, too. He is now the deputy fire chief at Fivepointville Fire Company and has 24 years - and counting - of experience as a volunteer firefighter. “You have a great opportunity to make a huge difference in someone’s life, especially since 99 percent of the people are in their worst nightmare when you get there,” Artus said. While Fivepointville has a decent amount of volunteers, Artus said that like many other fire companies, its numbers have slowly dwindled. Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association (LCFCA) Recruitment and Retention Committee spokesman Duane Hagelgans said that while some stations do very well, most are struggling to have and maintain enough members to provide adequate service. The Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association launched a recruitment campaign this year in an effort to meet See LCFCA pg 9 the growing need for volunteer members of the 67 fire departments and companies throughout the county.
A Support System For Families YWCA Programs Scheduled By Ann Mead Ash
There is a saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Maryanne O’Neill and Emmie Romberger, who are both staff members with Safe Families for Children, a program of Bethany Christian Services (BCS), believe this expression to be true. Safe Families is a ministry that helps parents experiencing a crisis by providing a Christian host family to care for their children until they can be reunited. “We are the preventative service, which saves funds,” explained Romberger, who added that the central Pennsylvania chapter has a 97 percent return-to-family rate. According to O’Neill, the program is much less costly than utilizing the foster care system. To help raise funds to support the work of Safe Families, BCS will hold a golf tournament on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, Stevens. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. A shotgun start will be held at 12:30 p.m., and the dinner and See Bethany Christian Services pg 4

Lancaster County community members were sworn in by the Hon. Jeffrey Reich as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers on May 31 in the ballroom at Emerald Foundation Community Campus in Lancaster. The local chapter opened in Dauphin County in 2011, and the Lancaster branch began serving clients about five years ago. The central Pennsylvania region includes York and Lebanon counties, offering about 55 host fami-
lies within the chapter. “We have really seen the program grow in terms of volunteers and those utilizing the service,” said Romberger. “We will work with any parent who is in crisis.” According to Romberger,

advantages to families who benefit from the service are many. “The parent gains an additional support network in the host family, and they can handle the crisis without their children being involved,” said Romberger. “(This can) ultimately stabilize the family.” In addition, parents retain full custody of their children, who stay with screened and trained host families. The organization works closely with all parties involved to provide support until the crisis has passed, an average of 45 days. A number of different types of issues may bring a client to Safe Families. “It’s a different situation every time,” said Romberger. “It could be homelessness, hospitalization, or incarceration, but the underlying issue is a lack of a support network.” Romberger added that for a single mother, the birth of a second child is often a time when help is needed, and O’Neill added that when a mother is undergoing treatment for an illness, such as cancer, Safe Families can often help. O’Neill and Romberger described a situation where a client was incarcerated when she gave birth. “The hospital social worker called us, and we started hosting the baby right out of the
hospital when he was (only) four days old,” said Romberger, explaining that the host mother took the baby to wellness checkups and brought him to see his birth mother whenever visitation was possible. After the birth mother was released, the host mother continued to have a relationship with her, helping to ease the new mother through issues that can be overwhelming, such as sleeping schedules. “It was a good transition,” said O’Neill, who noted that the birth mother called the host mother the first time the baby was ill. “When (the birth mother was) reunited (with the baby, the host mother gave her) a picture book of all the things they had done together,” O’Neill added. Referrals come from a number of sources, and many clients call Safe Families themselves. “We call people back within 24 hours,” noted Romberger. O’Neill noted that the organization is actively seeking to network with area churches for a variety of reasons. “We are looking to engage with new churches,” she noted. “That’s where we get our partners from.” Readers who would like to learn more about Safe Families may visit www.safe-families.org or call 717-238-3549.

VisionCorps Foundation has received a $1,000 grant from the board of directors of the MAXIMUS Foundation. The funds will be used to provide free vision screenings for nearly 9,000 preschool children. Since 1994, VisionCorps’ KidSight program has provided free vision screenings for more than 100,000 preschool children. According to VisionCorps president and CEO Dennis Steiner, the screenings assist with the early detection of certain types of childhood eye problems. KidSight also offers an educational program that teaches children about eye health and safety. VisionCorps’ Youth Enrichment program, which impacts youths ages 6 to
18, provides recreational, socialization, and other daily living activities to help them achieve independence. Since being established in 1926, VisionCorps has been helping to restore autonomy and independence for southeastern Pennsylvania residents who are blind or vision impaired. It currently serves more than 2,000 individuals who are blind or vision-impaired in Lancaster, Lebanon, York, Adams and Chester counties through rehabilitation services and/or employment opportunities. For more information on VisionCorps’ services, readers may visit www.vision corps.net or contact Chris Ament, vice president of rehabilitation, at 717-2915951, ext. 4165.

The Lancaster Heritage Press Museum and The .918 Club will help raise funds for the Heritage Press Education Center for the preservation and promotion of letterpress printing and book arts. Once operational, the center will teach technology similar to that which goes back to the 15th century when Gutenberg produced his famous Bible. Through member and company donations, almost $55,000 of the $157,000 needed to completely finish the center on the branch campus of the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology has been raised. A goal of $40,000 has been set using an online crowd funding site to fund the next phase of the renovations necessary to meet building and safety codes and to equip a state-of-the art classroom in the 1950s-era former Naval Reserve training center. Once operational, The Heritage Press Education Center, will be used to hold demonstrations and hands-on classes for all grades through college. It will be the only nearby facility where the general public can come to learn and then practice letterpress without having to own the necessary equipment. The online campaign has various levels of rewards. To donate, readers may visit www.918 club.org and select Support Us Here, which links directly to the fundraising site. More information about the building project is available at www.918club.org/ building-fund/. Anyone who wishes to contribute directly may send a check to The Lancaster Heritage Press Museum, 346 N. Queen St., Lancaster, PA 17603. For more information about the Heritage Press Education Center, readers may contact Kenneth Kulakowsky at 717464-3044 or kkulakowsky@ netzero.com.

“Some municipalities are seeing a need and must pay for firefighters; (however), there are many municipalities in Lancaster County that can survive and provide adequate protection with volunteers, if we have enough members of our communities willing to make the sacrifice to help their neighbors,” Hagelgans stated. Earlier this year, several Lancaster County volunteer firefighters and rescuers shared their experiences in oncamera interviews for videos as part of an ongoing countywide recruitment effort led by the LCFCA to draw in volunteers for the county’s 67 volunteer fire companies and search-and-rescue squads. The videos may be viewed by searching for “Lancaster County Volunteer Recruitment” at www.youtube.com. Hagelgans said that the LCFCA has seen an uptick in volunteer inquiries since the videos were released but is still well below the number of volunteers needed. The campaign has also included advertisements on the internet and television and at movie theaters, with radio ads coming soon. “If we can find people to give a little, we can all work together for the safety of our communities,” said Hagelgans, adding that individuals should not feel like they are signing up for a lifetime commitment either - just a few years will make a difference. Plus, Hagelgans emphasized that not all volunteers run into burning buildings. Willing individuals are needed to help with administrative functions, to serve as fire police to direct traffic, and to assist with exterior firefighting work. No special skillset is required, as training will be provided. For Lisa Breneman, who volunteers with Fire Department Mount Joy, it was seeing her father volunteer that sparked an interest in her. “Initially, I had approached it to just become a driver only and help them get out during daytime calls,” explained Breneman. That soon grew into an interest to do more than drive, as Breneman said she wanted to learn how to run in and assist those who were injured, and help extinguish the fires. That interest eventually led into a career for Breneman, who now works full-time as a fire investigator while continuing to volunteer locally. “It’s rewarding to help people in the community, to see that sense of relief in their eyes when you arrive on the scene, and try to calm the situation at hand,” shared Breneman. Providing fire prevention training at schools and watching the children’s excitement is another part of volunteering that Breneman loves. “You feel a sense of purpose when helping to serve the community, and I’d love to see more young people volunteer,” Breneman said. Most fire companies offer junior membership opportunities for students age 16 and older. Artus and Breneman both praised the camaraderie at their respective fire stations. “The fire service is a camaraderie and a brother and sisterhood,” Hagelgans remarked. “We are a family, and we will be your family.” To learn more or sign up to volunteer, readers may visit www.becomeafire fighter.org.

Landis Homes held a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 6 to celebrate the most recent addition to the retirement community’s campus in Lititz. Many people gathered to mark the official opening of the Calvin G. and Janet C. High Learning and Wellness Center and the new Crossings apartments. Attendees included residents, family members, donors, business partners, employees and neighbors. Speakers included Larry Zook, president and CEO, and Beth Trout, vice president of advancement. The new center, which is centrally located on the 114-acre campus, includes an indoor pool, a fitness room and studio, a bistro, a hair salon, a pharmacy, a bank, an art gallery, offices and classrooms. The top two floors in the 103,000-squarefoot, four-level center hold 22 apartments. New apartment residents began moving in on May 21, and shortly afterward the aquatics and fitness center opened to offer new services and classes. The total cost of the project is $53 million and will include two more structures. Now under construction, these will create 57 additional apartments, which are slated to open in late 2018 and spring

Mom’s House Receives Grant
ARRIVING LATE?
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded Mom’s House of Lancaster a $6,700 grant to support family literacy. This local grant award is part of more than $8.3 million in grants awarded to more than 1,000 schools, nonprofits, and organizations across the 44 states that Dollar General serves. With help from the grant, Mom’s House impacts the lives of the community by starting with the very basics of education, the fundamentals, and growing from there. Mom’s House believes that it is possible to respect each parent in a way that strengthens the desire to learn and pass that trait down to their children. Mom’s House believes that all parents have the right to resources to raise their children in conditions of dignity and financial independence and it is the only organization in Lancaster County that provides free child care services to low-income single parents enrolled in school full-time. The goal of Mom’s House is to empower these single parents to break out of the cycle of poverty and raise their families in financial independence. To learn more, readers may visit www.momshouselancaster.org.
