JULY IS NATIONAL ANTI-BOREDOM MONTH!
Solanco Unveils School Reopening Plan By Dayna M. Reidenouer
When the 2020-21 school year starts on Monday, Aug. 31, the Solanco School District plans to offer inperson instruction for all students, district superintendent Brian Bliss said during the school board meeting on July 6. “Doing so will be a challenge, but it is a challenge we are preparing to meet,” Bliss said, adding that 22 task forces are working on plans. Bliss stressed that the situation is continuing to evolve, so the current plan is subject to change. He called on community members, students, parents, and district employees to have empathy for everyone involved. “Our efforts must be grounded in genuine care for each other,” Bliss said. Bliss also encouraged modeling optimism and resilience for students. “(They) listen to our words, they watch our body language, and I am sure they are nervous and uncertain,” Bliss said. “Now is the time to help them work through this.” The reopening plans were created with the input of the task forces as well as feedback from parent engagement groups and parent survey respondents
and were built on the recommendations of local health professionals and governmental guidance. Bliss cited the American Academy of Pediatrics as suggesting that students might be harmed if schools do not reopen, including the interruption of support services, social isolation, reduced ability to address learning deficits, reduced emotional health services, and increased food insecurity. However, those negative effects must be balanced against the fact that individuals throughout the district are immunocompromised. “We must protect our most vulnerable,” Bliss asserted. To do that, the district has been building a flexible instructional model that will offer options for in-person, partially remote, or entirely remote learning. “Our goal is that, if the situation changes, our instructional model for students will continue uninterrupted,” Bliss explained. “We want all of our students present, but if some students have extended absences, we want them to continue on the same pace with their peers. If we have to change schedules throughout the year, we want instruction to seamlessly shift to a more remote setup.” See Solanco School District pg 2
UDS Service Dogs Program Sets First Golf Outing 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. Program manager Lori Breece hopes it will become an annual event. UDS Service Dogs will host its first golf outing “We have been trying to find a signature event on Friday, Aug. 28, at Meadia Heights Golf Club, that can bring in strong revenue for our program and get the community engaged,” Breece remarked. Landis Communities offered pointers in planning the event. Volunteers met with representatives of golf courses around Lancaster County to see who would want to partner with UDS Service Dogs, and Meadia Heights was the most eager. The Aug. 28 date was scheduled in August 2019. Breece said that when the shutdown occurred, she was afraid that the outing might UDS Service Dogs (from left) Gibson, Henry, and Kirby were have to be postponed or canmatched with clients in June and have begun team training in prepa- celed, but final planning for the ration for providing assistance to people with physical or intellectual event is going strong. disabilities. Supporting Solid Rock By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Community support is crucial to the ongoing operation of Solid Rock Youth Ministries, 34 E. State St., Quarryville, which offers free
programs for youths in kindergarten through ninth grade who live in southern Lancaster County. A member of Boy Scout Troop 91 recently built a welcome desk for Solid Rock, and a Farm-toTable Dinner Drive-Through Experience will be held on Friday, Aug. 7. Scout Andrew Craig, who will be a senior at Solanco High School this fall and then plans to study mechanical engineering in college, took on the construction of the desk as his Eagle Scout project. “I wanted to help an organization that doesn’t have access to as many resources as others I have more connections with,” Andrew said. “I also wanted a project that involved designing and building things, which I enjoy, and would be a challenge for me. I am super excited with how it turned out.” The desk will be used to check visitors in and See Solid Rock pg 3 Boy Scout Troop 91 member Andrew Craig recently built a welcome desk for Solid Rock Youth Ministries for his Eagle Scout project. UDS Golf Outing from pg 1 On Aug. 28, golfers may check in beginning at 8 a.m. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and will take a scramble format. Refreshments will be provided. A barbecue buffet is set for 2 p.m. Opportunities to win gift baskets will be available. Additionally, UDS clients and their working service dogs, as well as puppies in training, are slated to attend. Breece hopes that the program’s newest dog a Doberman pinscher - will have arrived by then and can be introduced at the outing. This will be the first Doberman to go through the UDS Ser-

vice Dogs program, although Breece has had a pet Doberman for six years. The program’s primary breed is the Labrador retriever, but because Dobermans are tall, they are better suited to providing stability when adults move from sitting to standing and vice versa. Breece had initially hoped to make $50,000 from the golf outing, but revenue expectations have been cut by half. “Any success will be a positive success because it’s new for us,” she said. The proceeds will be used to purchase more puppies for the program and cover veterinary
costs, which can reach $2,000 per animal. With about 12 new puppies every year, UDS Service Dogs has vet bills for 25 dogs a year. Breece noted that in total, the program invests $25,000 in each dog. Clients are charged just $5,000. “We haven’t raised prices in 15 years,” Breece said. Breece is excited about the evolution the program has undergone in recent years. She credited the change to the implementation of a better business plan and processes four years ago. “We had to commit to bringing in more puppies (to be trained),” Breece said. “Now we’re placing
six to nine dogs a year. We have eight staff members and 30 puppies in different stages of training. That’s a lot of growth.” Only a portion of the dogs that go through the training process provide mobility assistance. The others go to work as facility dogs or become pets. Several UDS Service Dogs interact with children in schools and with clients in a counseling office near Philadelphia. Breece would like to increase the services the dogs provide. Currently, staff members are taking classes to become certified to work with veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and train dogs to assist them, and child advocacy centers are on the waiting list for support canines. “I can’t wait to do it because I know it’ll help these children who have been through so much,” Breece commented. “I know how dogs are already helping in schools. The centers will partner each dog with a child, and the dog will be with them as they move through the court system.” Anyone who would like to support UDS Service Dogs by sponsoring the golf outing may contact Breece at 717-7158753 or lorib@udservices.org by Saturday, Aug. 1, and golfers may register to play in the outing at www.udservices.org/golf through Friday, Aug. 14.
“The online modality will look different than it did in the spring,” added assistant superintendent Robert Dangler. “It will be more synchronous, live.” One of the most significant challenges involves transportation. Solanco has the largest transportation operation in Lancaster County, Bliss said, and the number of riders on buses can only be decreased with the help of parents and guardians. Dangler reviewed the district’s plan, which is based on the template released by the state. Rather than adhere to the state model of three distinct siloes of red (fully closed), yellow (open with serious constraints), and green (open, but with masks), Solanco has looked at reopening as a spectrum and has planned procedures accordingly. Thorough cleaning of school facilities, daily symptom screenings at home, social and physical distancing, limiting gatherings, restricting visitors, and promoting handwashing will be part of the new school year. Students will be required to wear masks on buses if they cannot sit at least 3 feet apart and while changing classes. Under the current order mandating masks when less than 6 feet separates two individuals, everyone would have to wear masks. In classrooms where that
space is available, teachers would wear masks or face shields because they would be doing a lot of speaking, but students would not necessarily have to wear masks. Grant money has been received and the district has applied for additional funding to purchase personal protective equipment, including masks and face shields, and will appeal to the community for additional supplies if needed. The district plan aims to limit closure, and infections will be handled on a school-by-school basis. “If necessary, we can enact more stringent measures before full closure, and we will get students back as quickly as we safely can in that scenario,” Dangler said. “Our goal is to maintain the fidelity of instruction and ensure students’ learning and emotional needs are being met.” Bliss said he anticipates school starting with a five-day-a-week schedule as normal, but things beyond the district’s control may change that. Half-day kindergarten will carry on as usual, with additional cleaning throughout the day and between shifts. For more information about the district’s reopening plan, readers may visit www.solanco.k12.pa.us or call district community relations director Keith Kaufman at 717-786-5617.

One section includes a small, locked cabinet and a raised counter for displaying promotional materials while the second section has a desk that will accommodate a seated individual. “The most challenging part of the project was getting the design of the external panels right,” Andrew commented. “The coronavirus panic also came at a time when I was beginning construction, so I wasn’t able to involve Scouts other than my brothers, which was a shame.” Andrew’s brothers, Daniel, Joseph, and Joshua, assisted with the project. Giant Completes Pollinator Field
R060276
Find problem gambling help 717-299-2831
In celebration of National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company recently announced it has completed a 7-acre pollinator-friendly solar field at its corporate headquarters at 1149 Harrisburg Pike in Carlisle. This initiative aims to create a synergistic environment, which contributes both to clean energy and support for bee and pollinator populations needed within the agriculture industry. Honey bees pollinate $15 billion worth of food crops in the United States each year, yet populations have been experiencing a decline for more than three decades, the Giant Company reported. Beekeepers across the United States lost an estimated
40.7% of their honey bee colonies from April 2018 to April 2019, according to the latest annual nationwide survey conducted by the University of Maryland-led nonprofit Bee Informed Partnership. A pollinator field provides Giant with an opportunity to educate team members, customers and the community about the role bees play in getting food onto their family’s table, noted Nicholas Bertram, president of the Giant Company. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture deputy secretary Cheryl Cook added that nearly one-third of the nation’s food supply depends on pollinators, making bees an essential part of the food supply chain and ecosystem. The Giant Company has also been selected as the first grocery retailer and first Pennsylvania participant to take part in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s InSPIRE study, where scientists measure and track the performance of the pollinator-friendly ground cover for applications to future solar energy projects. In addition to the benefits of the plants, the new solar array coupled with the one currently installed on the roof of the Giant Company headquarters will reduce 4.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide in the environment and generate enough power for the entire building. Native seed mixes provided by Ernst Conservation Seeds will act as a vegetative solution to beautify the site and provide valuable ecological functions. The Giant Company hopes the native meadow established will create a habitat for pollinators, birds and
other small wildlife while improving the quality of the soil beneath it, reducing runoff and creating an attractive backdrop to the site. The field includes more than 20 varieties of wildflowers native to the northeast and central Pennsylvania like butterfly milkweed, mountain mint, blue mistflower and golden Alexander. Robin Ernst, president of Ernst Pollinator Service, explained that as the field matures over the next few years, more than one million pollinator-attracting plants will provide pollen and nectar sources for honey bees and other pollinators, which will in turn pollinate local farm fields. The Giant Company also announced a new strategic partnership with Planet Bee Foundation. Based in San Francisco, Planet Bee is a nonprofit organization focused on driving awareness for pollinators while creating environmental stewards of all ages, in turn contributing to the well-being of bees. In celebration of the new partnership and National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company announced a $50,000 donation to Planet Bee Foundation. Planet Bee Foundation has constructed the beehives for the pollinator-friendly solar field and will tend to the health of the colonies as the bees provide their essential pollinator services to the local ecosystem. The foundation is also helping the Giant Company develop educational signs that will be installed along the on-campus walking path to drive awareness about the importance of bees to the grocery and agricultural supply chains.

A grant funding opportunity from State Farm is being offered for nonprofits. State Farm Neighborhood Assist will award $25,000 grants to 40 nonprofit organizations to help fund neighborhood improvement projects. In a recent State Farm research study, one-quarter of respondents said that they are “extremely or “very involved in trying to improve their neighborhood and six in 10 said they are trying to improve their neighborhood in some capacity. State Farm Neighborhood Assist aims to be a catalyst for that change. Individuals can submit a cause at www.neighborhoodassist.com. A submission guide is available on the website. State Farm will accept the first 2,000 submissions. The State Farm Review Committee will then narrow the field to the top 200 finalists. Voters will decide which community improvement projects win. The public will have a chance to vote 10 times a day, every day for 10 days, from Wednesday, Sept. 23, through Friday, Oct. 2, for their favorite causes from the list of finalists. The 40 causes that receive the most votes will each win a $25,000 grant. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Last year, 163,000 people cast a total of 4.4 million votes in support of their favorite causes, selecting winners from small towns and big cities. Since the program began, State Farm has awarded $8 million in support of more than 300 causes. For more information, readers may visit www.neighborhood assist.com or call their local State Farm agent.

Theater Announces Telethon Fundraiser Fulton Theatre, in partnership with WGAL 8 in Lancaster, has announced a fundraising telethon event. Titled “This Is Our Home” and sponsored by Fulton Bank, the telethon will air live on WGAL 8 on Saturday, July 25, from 7 to 8 p.m. “This Is Our Home” will be hosted by WGAL’s Lori Burkholder and Brian Roche, with Fulton Theatre’s executive artistic producer, Marc Robin, as well as Curt Dale Clark, Jeffrey Coon, Nicole Hackmann, and Charis Leos. The telethon will feature performances by Broadway’s Kate Fahrner, Ciara Renée, and Kalyn West, with a guest appearance by Broadway performer and Lancaster native Jonathan Groff. Additional
performances will be by Jeffrey Coon, Nathaniel Hackmann, Randy Jeter, Tarra Conner Jones, and Travis Taylor. The event will also include a special performance by Darius Harper and the Fulton Academy of Theatre students. Robin noted that the theme of the telethon refers to the Fulton Theatre’s role as a “home to the arts” in central Pennsylvania. On June 12, the Fulton Theatre announced the suspension of productions until late spring of 2021. Robin noted that the theater had originally planned to reopen in August, but that will not be possible. He added that during the pandemic, the theater has supported the community through making masks, gowns,
and face shields for frontline workers. To maintain its financial health, the theater has decreased its staff size by 70%, including personnel across all areas of the theater. The theater estimates it will sustain over $2 million in lost revenue during its closure. It hopes to raise a portion of this lost revenue through the telethon. During the telethon, viewers will be able to donate through texting and by calling the Fulton Theatre. Beginning July 6, donations are also accepted at www.fulton.givesmart.com. The Fulton thanked its our production partner, Production Express Inc., and creative partner Kinectiv.

Humanitarian Aid The Lancaster Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints recently offered humanitarian aid during the COVID-19 pandemic in three different ways. The effort utilized the centralized structure of the church, which has headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, and local wards or congregations that are aware of needs in their own communities. The first effort was born of a request to Stan Walters, the Pennsylvania Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) director and a member of the Shrewsbury Ward, from Shen Kreiser at York County’s

not having craft resources or broadcast television signals at home. To overcome these challenges, WITF assembled 3,000 resource bags and 300 antennas for IUs to distribute to partner locations that serve families directly. Each free resource bag contains pencils, a pencil sharpener, crayons, colored pencils, paper plates, construction paper, safety scissors, a glue stick and the curriculum packet with instructions in English and Spanish. During the eight-week camp, families will watch featured PBS KIDS programs like “ Wild Kratts” and “Hero Elementary” on WITF TV to learn about animal habitats, camouflage, mimicry, structure and more. A discussion guide and key vocabulary will help caregivers talk to their children about what they are watching. Then families will work together on an animal habitat design project using the materials in the resource bags. The curriculum also includes introductions to STEM careers for young learners, a suggested book list and links to extension STEM games and activities online.

WITF announced that central Pennsylvania families seeking a fun, educational experience at home can join the free “Summer STEM Adventure!” Based on the “Engineering By Design” curriculum, the summer camp style experience will guide families through a combination of PBS KIDS television programs, discussion questions, structured craft activities and career exploration for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education is a student-centered approach that encourages development of skills such as problem solving, curiosity, communication and design thinking. WITF, the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Intermediate Units (IUs) 12, 13 and 15 partnered to provide the summer camp in a format that may spark interest in STEM and its related careers, support different styles of learning, remove obstacles to participation, and meet educational objectives in a rewarding way. The IUs recognized obstacles to participation could include families

donate their credit to frontline COVID-19 responders in the eight states Goodville members live in or internationally. A total of 3,957 credits were donated by members resulting in $110,362 in credits donated, all of which will be distributed to food banks, first responders and health professionals, as well as international charities providing COVID19 relief. Goodville will fulfill its commitment to match those donations up to $100,000 to double the impact of its members’ donations. Members who chose to donate their credit could direct their donation to the category of their choice. Forty-eight percent chose regional food banks, 26% chose a “where needed most” category, 21% selected first responders and 5% directed their credit toward international relief. Goodville distributed the funds in June to regional food banks, first responders and health care professionals in the states in which contributing members reside. Goodville will work with the Mennonite Central Committee to direct funds to international communities in need. A detailed list of the charities selected is forthcoming. For more information about the program, readers may visit www.goodville.com/covid19.

Moves Online Center Receives Matching Grant According to Dan Fink, director of marketing and public relations for the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, this is just the second time that Schreiber has received a $250,000 matching grant in its 84-year history, and both times it has come from the Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation. “This one comes at a critical moment for us as we work to navigate a COVID-19 world,” Fink remarked. “Like many nonprofits, we’re facing a challenging period in the next 12 months.” The grant will provide a dollar-fordollar match for all the money raised by Schreiber starting June 11, when the Stabler Foundation forwarded its approval. Stabler has committed up to $250,000, and Schreiber has one year to raise the matching funds. The initial $250,000 grant combined with what Schreiber hopes to raise from the community would mean $500,000 for the local organization, matching the amount generated from a similar grant by the Stabler Foundation in 2016. That grant was the largest contribution toward adding an infant room to Schreiber’s Circle of Friends Academy child care center. “This grant couldn’t have come at a better time for Schreiber,” said Schreiber president James DeBord. “Obviously, with everything happening around COVID-19, raising revenue is even more of a concern than usual. The community rallied around us, as it always does, these past three months, but we don’t know what challenges are ahead of us. This grant and the matching dollars it generates will give us a significant boost at a critical time in our fundraising.”

Schreiber’s financial development office, 610 Community Way, Lancaster. Ticket sales will end on Saturday, Sept. 12. Proceeds from ticket sales will be matched by the Stabler grant. COVID-19 prompted the shift to a virtual duckie race, and there will be other ways this year’s event will look different. Schreiber supporters are encouraged to purchase tickets online to limit personal contact during duckie transactions. Fun, new content, particularly contests and biographies of some of this year’s souvenir duckies, will be posted on the aforementioned website. Additionally, Schreiber has a new Duckie Mobile that will travel around Lancaster County selling duckies and bringing other excitement to neighborhoods. This year’s theme is “Choose Your Own Adventure” and features some of the most popular souvenir duckies from recent years, including dinosaurs, unicorns, and cows. To honor health care heroes, doctors, nurses and other medical duckies are available as well. The Schreiber Center is a nonprofit organization that aims to offer the finest in innovative therapy, education, and recreation resources for children, teenagers, and young adults. It has been open and providing limited therapy and behavioral health services, primarily through telehealth sessions, since early April. Circle of Friends Academy reopened on June 8. Camp Schreiber began operating virtually on June 22. In addition, some Schreiber fundraising events that were limited, delayed, or postponed are finding new dates. The softball weekend will be held from Friday to Sunday, Aug. 21 to 23, and the Golf Classic will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 21. “We will keep making adjustments as we go,” DeBord said, “and we will keep telling our story. This place has been around for 84 years. I have faith that the staff, our leadership, and this community will do what’s necessary to make sure we’re still here on the other side of COVID.” Additionally, Schreiber has moved its iconic Rubber Duckie Race online. This year’s race would have been the 32nd event, but the tens of thousands of racing ducks will not take their trip down the Conestoga River at Lancaster County Central Park. Instead, a special online duckie event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, to determine prize winners. Tickets went on sale July 1 and will be available at www.schreiberpediatric.org /events/duckies or in person at Duckie Central, also known as

With the arrival of COVID-19, Landis Valley Museum, Lancaster, had to cancel programs and put special projects on hold. The museum has been closed to the public since mid-March, and all but essential personnel are working from home. All events have been canceled through August, but new online programming ideas are being discussed. The “Thrown, Fired and Glazed: The Redware Tradition From Pennsylvania and Beyond” exhibit was originally scheduled to run until December, but it has been extended to June 2021. Landis Valley is also trying to find ways to help engaged couples make their wedding dreams come true in spite of COVID-19. For updates, readers may visit www.landisvalleymuseum.org or follow the museum on Facebook and Instagram. For more information or to submit a program suggestion, readers may contact c-creedy@state.pa.us.
