Mechanic Grove Offers “No Golf” Fundraiser For Earle Hershey, the past 25 first Fridays of August have been reserved for Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren’s Brethren Disaster Ministries golf tournament. This year will be different, as the event on Friday, Aug. 7, has been canceled. “Rather than putting anybody at risk, we thought we’d just skip this year,” Hershey said. When Stanley Kreider proposed the tournament as a way to multiply $10 in seed money as part of a congregational challenge, he needed someone to chair the event. Hershey accepted the role and has held that position for the duration. Hershey noted that quite a few people have played in the tournament every year, and now a significant number of participants are in the at-risk category. Additionally, due to social distancing guidelines, only six people can occupy the church kitchen at one time, which would make preparing the traditional evening meal for 200 people nearly impossible. “Some of the people just come for the meal,”
Hershey commented. “The women of the church make a wonderful meal with pulled pork.” The state of the business community was also another reason Hershey and the organizing committee opted to cancel the tournament. Typically, the committee seeks $100 sponsorships from 70 local businesses. “We didn’t feel right asking for (a donation) because so many (businesses) aren’t open,” Hershey explained. The tournament has generated more than $287,000 for natural disaster relief, and the committee had hoped that this year’s event would push the total over $300,000. With the understanding that golf might take a hiatus but natural disasters will not, the committee has opted to host a “no golf” fundraiser. As part of the effort, the committee is accepting donations for disaster relief through the month of August. Tuesday, Sept. 1, is the deadline for contributions. “We usually take a check up to the Lebanon Disaster Relief Auction,” Hershey explained. This year, the committee will not submit the contributions in person because the auction has been canceled. See No Golf Fundraiser pg 6
So You Want To Start A Blog With unemployment in the double digits nationally and with limits on how much socialization can be done in person, starting a blog might seem like an ideal solution. Bloggers can earn an income while interacting with people outside their own households from the safety of their homes. However, there is more to becoming a successful blogger than just opening a WordPress account. It is easy to start a blog, but it can be challenging to keep it going. "I stay motivated because I picked a topic that is just our life. It's something that I'm very interested in,” said Ephrata resident Kathy McClure, who launched the Frugal Lancaster Kathy McClure
Biking The Road: Tips For Safe Riding
blog in 2010. "Don't start a blog on something new to you. Choose something that you're already doing and interested in." McClure began blogging as a way to share with others how she and her husband saved money while raising children. Initially, the blog focused on how to use coupons effectively. It also featured a partdiscount, part-referral deal program, and McClure estimated that her family saved more than $1,000 on dining and entertainment thanks to the program that first year. As the family grew and ways to save money changed from coupons to gas points, the blog also shifted. "I just share about things I use and do myself," McClure said. "Most of the time, it's just, we're living life, and I share it." During the last few months, McClure has seen people starting blogs on current hot topics such as homesteading and homeschooling. "Look at your gifts and your interests. Look at what people are asking you about and go from there. Be creative. Try it and see what works. Some people start channels for their pets," she said. "If it brings you joy, (consider it for a blog). We're in a time where we need things that bring us joy." See Blogging Advice pg 12

The advent of summer typically coincides with an increase of bicyclists on the roads. For some riders, cycling is a form of transportation. For others, it is a mode of relaxation and recreation.
Lancaster Bicycle Club safety director John Mullineaux encourages cyclists to wear helmets and behave like vehicles to be safe on the road.
For everyone, however, safety is paramount. Lancaster Bicycle Club safety director John Mullineaux listed two overarching principles for safe riding: wear a helmet and behave like a vehicle. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) requires anyone under the age of 12 to wear a helmet, whether they are operating the bicycle or participating as a passenger on a bike or a bike-pulled trailer. PennDOT does not mandate helmets for riders age 12 and older, but it strongly recommends that everyone wears a helmet. Mullineaux agreed, saying, “Wear a helmet. They do help an enormous amount. I’m 70 years old, and I wear a helmet every time I ride.” Although helmets are regulated for children, the age at which youngsters may ride on the road is not. Instead, that privilege depends on the training and the skill level of the individual rider. Some area school districts provide education to middle-grade students to encourage them to ride bicycles to school. Regardless of age, behaving like a vehicle while riding a bicycle might not be intuitive, but it is See Bicycle Safety pg 3

worth practicing. According to Mullineaux, in Pennsylvania, cyclists have the right to ride wherever they think it is safe to do so, with the exclusion of riding against traffic. “Always ride with traffic. Always,” Mullineaux stressed. Pedestrians walk against traffic because they can quickly move to the side of the road when encountering oncoming vehicles. “If you’re riding a bicycle, you don’t have time to get over when you see a car coming toward you,” Mullineaux said. When Mullineaux learned to ride on the road, he was taught to put his wheels on the white fog line or stay as far to the edge of the road surface in the absence of the line. However, he later learned that doing so makes cyclists less visible to automobile drivers, it makes it tempting for drivers to try to squeeze by a bicycle, and there is nowhere to go if an animal runs in front of the bike or the road contains an obstacle. “I like the shoulder, but if you don’t have a shoulder to ride on, the next safest place is to have your wheels in the same place as the right-hand tires of an automobile,” Mullineaux said. “(That way), in order for them to pass you, they must do a clean pass.” Mullineaux related that he once encountered a person at a safety presentation who was upset that cyclists were taking up part of a lane while ascending a hill. He asked the individual how they would have behaved if the cyclist had instead been a piece of heavy equipment, emphasizing that it is important to give cyclists the same respect. On one-way streets, Mullineaux regularly rides in the middle of a lane because vehicles can safely pass him in the adjacent lane. For single-lane roundabouts, which have been slowly cropping up in Lancaster County, cyclists should take the lane. Motorists may have to spend a few extra seconds getting through the roundabout, but it is worth it to ensure everyone’s safety. To make left-hand turns on a twoway street, Mullineaux said that he gets close to the double yellow lines as soon as it is safe to do so and signals a turn.

“If a car comes up behind me (and also plans to turn), they have to wait for me,” he remarked. Bicycle lanes are a prominent feature on some Lancaster city streets. On Walnut Street, most of the bike lane is against the sidewalk and protected from the left lane of traffic by a row of parking spaces. Anyone seated on the left side of parked vehicles must look to the lane behind their vehicle to ensure they do not open their doors into a cyclist’s path. Mullineaux shared that driver’s education courses are now teaching the Dutch Reach to open doors. Popularized by the Netherlands, where bicycles outnumber residents, the Dutch Reach is so named because a seated individual crosses their body with their opposite hand to open their car door. Doing so turns the individual’s body so it is more likely they see the lane toward the rear of the vehicle and thus spot any approaching cyclists. On rural routes, cyclists may encounter horse-drawn carriages. Bicycles are almost always faster, although Mullineaux said he has been known to draft behind a buggy in the presence of a tailwind. To safely pass a horse-drawn vehicle, cyclists may ride close to the center line, making sure no drivers are coming toward them. Then, once they are well past the horse, riders may return to See Bicycle Safety pg 12

Blogging Advice from pg 1 There are multiple ways to earn an income through a blog. Traditionally, these have included advertisements placed on a page as well as sponsored posts in which businesses pay bloggers to write about products or events. Now, there are services like Patreon through which bloggers may offer special access to posts on Instagram or subscriptions so readers will not see ads on their blogs. Running an Instagram account, along with having an active Facebook page or group, has become crucial for earning an income from blogging. McClure spends as much time on Facebook and Instagram posts as she does on blog posts, and she uses her blog as a content resource center where she creates posts that she shares on social media. "I think I've become more of an influencer than a blogger," she said. "It's a lot of Instagram stories and posts that people connect with." Posting to social media is relatively simple because images, not text, are the focus, but McClure expressed a bias toward having a blog as a backup. "If Instagram goes down, you still have all your stuff (on your blog)," she explained. "The email list (of your subscribers) is yours." Internet trolls - people who post comments designed to cause upset or derail conversations - are an unfortunate reality of the blogosphere. The majority of feedback on McClure's posts has been positive, but when the occasional troll pops up, McClure simply deletes the comment. Other times she allows the comment to remain but does not respond, and yet other times she engages. Each instance has to be handled on a case-by-case basis, she noted. When McClure began blogging in 2010, she used her degree in new media technology from Rochester Institute of Technology to build her own website. Now, there are many services available to help bloggers manage their posts. In addition to WordPress, McClure listed Buffer and Later for scheduling Facebook and Instagram posts, respectively; MailerLite and ConvertKit for email marketing; E-junkie for file downloads; and Tailwind for managing Pinterest. McClure also recommended connecting with other bloggers and is herself a member of a Facebook group for Lancaster County bloggers. Thanks to work she put into the blog in the early years when her children were little, McClure now needs to spend only about five hours a week on it. Ultimately, patience, persistence, and dedication are key to running a successful blog. "Don't expect the money right away," McClure advised. "You're doing it to share whatever you know, your knowledge. You're doing it to connect with people."

from pg 4 their original position on the road. “I sometimes wave (when passing), especially if there are kids in the back,” Mullineaux said. He offered a word of caution about sharing the road with horse-drawn conveyances, noting, “If you’re not paying attention, it’s easy to come upon a buggy unawares.” The Lancaster Bicycle Club offers educational resources and training on bike safety. Interested individuals may visit https://lancasterbikeclub.net/, click on the About tab and select “Safety Tips” and “Smart Cycling.”
