Swing a club to keep Solanco strong

The Solanco Education Foundation (SEF) will host its annual Tee It Up for Education golf fundraiser on Friday, Aug. 18, at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. Registration will begin at noon, followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m. A set cost per player will include use of a golf cart, a boxed lunch and a beverage.

Players will have an opportunity to earn prizes as a team during the event. Gift cards for Tanglewood Manor will be awarded to each member of the highest-scoring teams; the first-place men’s team will receive gift cards for a higher amount, while the second-place men’s team and the first-place coed team will receive gift cards for a lower amount.

Individual golfers will also be able to compete for prizes in several skill contests. Closest-to-thepin on holes 7, 13 and 16 will earn a free round of golf with complimentary use of a golf cart. A longest drive contest will be held in separate men’s and women’s categories, and the winner in each category will receive a free round of golf with use of a golf cart. The winner of the putting contest will be awarded half of the total money pot for the event.

The golf outing is SEF’s largest annual fundraiser, and it is a tradition that has been carried on for several years. The money raised from the event allows the foundation to sustain its efforts to support students, teachers and families in the Solanco School District. SEF provides this support this through three primary methods: scholarships for graduating high school seniors, venture

Fundraisers will support new church fellowship hall

Two years ago, New Providence Baptist Church, located at 2411 Beaver Valley Pike, New Providence, began the process of undertaking one of its largest projects to date. The goal of the project is to construct an entirely new building to serve as fellowship hall, and the church started a fundraising campaign last year to drum up the necessary resources to complete it. The fundraising committee continues to coordinate events to fund the building project.

grants for school staff members and Solanco Strong grants for families.

At the end of each school year, SEF gives scholarships to multiple graduating seniors to assist them with their next step in education. The scholarships given out by the foundation are independent of the school district’s scholarships and are made possible by SEF fundraisers. At the end of the 2022-23 school year, the foundation gave out over $22,000 in senior scholarships.

SEF is currently preparing to announce the nine recipients of

this year’s venture grants. The grants allow school staff members to offer enrichment activities for students and to complete projects that fall outside of the school district’s budget. In the past, one venture grant allowed a teacher to create a team of students to compete in STEM competitions across the country. Solanco Strong grants are given to families of Solanco students who are in need. The grants assist families with rent and utility bills, uniform costs and entry fees for Advanced Placement courses. The grants are also used to purchase

insurance for students’ school laptops.

In addition to holding fundraisers, SEF raises funds via consistent donations from teachers throughout the district. Many school staff members participate in a payroll deduction program, which raises over $10,000 for the foundation annually. “We’re strong because everyone in the community participates and supports our mission,” said Tom Brackbill, president of SEF’s board of directors. “That’s why we gave (Solanco Strong grants) the name we did. We are not only supported by teachers, but retirees and the general community.”

On Sunday, Aug. 20, New Providence Baptist Church will host a back-to-school fundraising event. It will begin with a church service at 11 a.m., followed by various games and activities. The PPL Foundation has completed the first of three planned grant cycles for 2023, awarding $185,000 in grants to 24 nonprofit organizations working to build stronger communities in eastern and central Pennsylvania. In all, the PPL Foundation expects to award nearly $1 million in grants this year to support the Foundation’s focus areas: education; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and sustainable communities.

Funds from the first round of grants - the Powering Equity grants - will be used to facilitate community conversations on diversity and inclusion, improve equity in access to higher education, and support innovation and entrepreneurship among underrepresented residents in area communities.

Recipients of the Powering Equity grants, ranging from $2,500 to $15,000, included Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region, Harrisburg; Fulton Theatre Company, Lancaster; Lighthouse Rehabilitation Center, New Holland; and United Way of Lancaster County, Lancaster. For more information, visit www.pplcares.com.

for the project will play the role of a target during a pie-throwing contest at the back-toschool event. The church will also be handing out book bags for children preparing to go back school in the fall. Free food and refreshments, such as snow cones, cotton candy, popcorn and hot dogs, will be available.

On Saturday, Oct. 14, New Providence Baptist Church will host a live benefit auction and barbecue. A variety of items that have been donated to the church will be available to bid on, and all of the proceeds will help fund the fellowship hall project. To donate an item for the auction, contact fundraising committee member Meek Rineer by emailing meek856@gmail.com or calling 717-368-7075.

frompg 1

The fellowship hall will be erected on the land where the original church was located prior to being torn down. It will be equipped with a commercial kitchen, restrooms and multiple handicapped-accessible entrances. As the project is still in the fundraising stage, the church is currently focused on planning events and seeking out engineers and construction workers.

The primary function of the fellowship hall will be to provide a space for the church’s youth group to hold activities and events. New Providence Baptist Church also plans to make the building available to rent for weddings, family reunions and community outreach initiatives. The new facility will

allow the church to host regular community meals by donation, as well as Bible studies.

“Our community needs more outreach and people to assist those in need,” Rineer said. “We want to be able to do that as a church. We want to be out there helping people in the community.”

Currently, New Providence Baptist Church operates the Compassion Committee, a group that provides community service throughout the Southern End. Through one of the group’s initiatives, members of the Compassion Committee assist seniors with mowing their lawns and weeding flower beds.

LCAA opens summer exhibits

On July 23, Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, opened two new exhibits: the membership show in the Kauffman Gallery and a showcase from photographer Mia Curran in the Steinmetz Gallery. Both

exhibits will remain on display through Thursday, Aug. 24, during LCAA’s regular hours of 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays through Saturdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

The membership show, titled “Summer Breeze,” highlights work from LCAA’s members that revolves

around a summer theme. Each member was able to submit one to three pieces that depict subject matter related to summertime, however the artist interprets it. “Even when we select a theme for a show, we try to leave it open to interpretations,” said Patricia Keller of Landisville, event coordinator and member of LCAA. “That way artists can submit more of their work and use anything that fits their imaginations.”

The work featured in “Summer Breeze” will be judged in the professional and nonprofessional categories, and awards will be given out for first, second and third places, as well as an honorable mention.

In the Steinmetz Gallery, Mia Curran is showcasing her photography in an exhibit titled “The Essence of Nature.” Through her featured work, Curran seeks to capture the unseen characteristics of gardens, flowers and nature. Although the show primarily features her photography, the pictures will be accompanied by various floral arrangements, which Curran crafted by hand. “My goal was to bring out what the average person might not see when walking through a garden,” Curran said. “There’s a whole world there that you don’t see until you get on your hands and knees and really look.”

Curran, who is a resident of Chester County, has been photographing since her father gifted her a camera when she was 8 years old. She

Mennonite Life will host its annual Storytelling Night on Monday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. at Landisville Mennonite Church, 3320 Bowman Road, Landisville. Throughout the evening, storytellers Karl McKinney and Karen Sensenig will relate short-form anecdotes from their lives.

McKinney, who lives with his wife, Kellie, in Landisville, serves as the intercultural leadership minister of LMC (formerly Lancaster Mennonite Conference) and is focused on helping LMC address oppression in its mindset,

systems and structures.

Sensenig, who now lives in Akron, was aware of God’s presence as a young child in the midst of a coup in Ethiopia and has carried trust in God throughout her adult life as a wife, mother, teacher, pastor and chaplain, and now as a potter and spiritual director. Most of her stories take place in intercultural settings.

Storytelling Night is a complimentary event. Mennonite Life welcomes donations to support its mission, which includes storytelling and history conservation efforts.

Growing the garden

The Edible Classroom, a nonprofit based in Washington Boro, has been selected as one of United Way’s Level Up and Launch Fellows. Through the annual program, United Way offered a $25,000 grant and has committed further fundraising support to the Edible Classroom, as well as nine other local nonprofits.

In addition to the initial grant, United Way will match the funds that the Edible Classroom raises until Friday, Nov. 10. Beth Horst and Grace Julian, co-founders of the Edible Classroom, plan to use the increased support to strengthen the organization’s existing programs and to

expand its impact in the area. “As we were considering how to deepen our investment in our school districts, we saw this grant as an opportunity to expand in the community while remaining in the classroom,” Horst said.

With the resources acquired through United Way’s program, the Edible Classroom will focus its attention on two projects: establishing a schoolbased community garden in the Columbia and Lancaster school districts. One of the goals of creating the gardens is to provide educational opportunities for high school students in the form of paid internships, where the students will participate in the

operation and maintenance of new programs. The gardens will also serve as a platform for many local school districts to offer science classes, gardening courses and career training.

At Hamilton Elementary School in School District of Lancaster, the Edible Classroom will expand the existing garden into an adjacent unused plot. The current garden is already being utilized for summer camps, community gatherings and garden education courses, but the expansion will allow for a larger space for events and easier public access to fresh produce. The Edible Classroom also plans to hold a series of workshops on site once the

project is completed.

As the Edible Classroom progresses its project at Hamilton Elementary School, it is simultaneously working on a similar venture at Columbia High School and Middle School Hill Campus. Although the twin projects share the same goals, the undertaking in Columbia will focus in part on addressing food insecurity in the district. The food grown in the garden will be distributed to students’ families through a partnership with Columbia Borough.

The Edible Classroom is currently in the early stages of planning the project, and Julian and Horst hope to begin installing the infras-

tructure for each garden in the fall. The nonprofit has also connected with local high schools to enlist the help of volunteer groups and those interested in becoming interns. “Right now, we’re just networking with community

members to listen and learn from them,” Horst said. “We’re going to go through one portion at a time as we acquire the funds.” For more information, visit https://theedibleclass room.org.

Although it is located in Strasburg, LCAA comprises members from across the county in areas such as Hempfield and Manheim Township. The nonprofit hosts 10 shows throughout the year, and it is always looking for individuals or businesses to sponsor its events. For more information, contact Carol Herr at 717687-7061.

Learn to tame traffic-related stress

Most drivers have experienced aggravation while navigating the nation’s roadways. In fact, the automotive group AAA estimates that nearly eight out of 10 drivers demonstrate aggressive driving behaviors. Road rage is the extreme outcome of impatience or frustration behind the wheel and often stems from traffic-related stress. Drivers can take steps to reduce stress and recognize behaviors that may contribute to road rage.

Don’t rush. Leave plenty time to get to a destination. Drivers are more likely to be impatient and react to traffic stressors if they are racing the clock.

Calm down. Drivers who experience something that has angered or upset them should take time to calm down before getting behind the wheel.

Be patient. Recognize that someone driving slowly may be lost or aging with diminished abilities. Keep a safe distance. Tailgating

can create animosity between drivers. By leaving room, people can avoid aggressive interactions between drivers that can contribute to frustration.

Do not honk unnecessarily. Honking out of frustration is unproductive and also may exacerbate stress levels and anger other drivers.

Take an alternative route. Drivers who know that certain roadways are plagued by traffic may want to find another route to avoid the traffic, even if the new route is longer.

Avoid traveling during rush hour. Roadways are busier at certain times of the day, and if possible, drivers may alter their schedule so that they commute during off-peak hours.

Share the driving. Split driving duties with others, particularly when feeling stressed out. Breaking up particularly long trips among a few drivers can relieve anxiety.

Driving can be stressful, but there are various ways to mitigate feelings that may escalate into anger and road rage.

UDS service dogs manager, suggested hosting a golf outing annually; the event has been supported by the community ever since. “We had great feedback from the first year,” Breece said. “It turned out this is something we could really build and grow on.”

This year, UDS’ goal is to raise $50,000. The proceeds from the golf outing make up the largest portion of the organization’s yearly fundraising efforts, although UDS remains active in the community through frequent small-scale events. In recent years, UDS has partnered with local businesses and restaurants to hold events that directly support its programs.

UDS primarily assists those with mobility issues and disabilities by providing them with a service dog. UDS raises and trains its service dogs to complete tasks such as opening and closing doors, turning off lights, retrieving medication and helping someone get dressed in the morning.

Each dog is trained in one of three specialties: facility dogs, service dogs and companion dogs. Facility dogs are prepared for settings such as schools, therapists’ offices and child advocacy centers, where they provide emotional support and deescalate outbursts. Service dogs are assigned to individuals, and they are trained to assist with tasks that

include helping their owners recover from a fall. Companion dogs are most similar to pets; they keep their owners company at home and are often trained to assist with everyday tasks.

In recent years, UDS has continued to grow as it has experienced a higher demand for its canine helpers. In 2017, UDS encountered a wave of applications from schools across the county seeking facility dogs. “We would love to see a facility dog in every school,” said Breece. “They’re changing the landscape of education and supporting students who have struggled in the past.”

Ways to give back to seniors

Older adults offer much to local and national communities, but they do not always get the proper recognition. It is always a good time for people to thank special seniors in their life, whether they are family members, caregivers, friends or mentors. Individuals can go a step further by giving back to other seniors in their community in any of the following ways.

Volunteer. It is recommended that people visit a senior center and find out how they can volunteer their services and do something fun or informational with the seniors who are there. Volunteers may be able to guide a class in a certain activity, such as crafting or yoga, or they may be needed to call bingo numbers or help with meal services.

Provide financial relief. Small business owners can offer discounts to senior clientele. They can run specials on services from tax preparation to hair styling. People who do not own businesses can provide assistance in other ways, such as cutting the lawn or doing light gardening so that a senior does not have to spend money on a weekly service.

Dorrin, a painter from Mountville, displays off one of his comic book collages. Dorrin has a following among comic book aficionados, one of whom attended the ASPIE gallery opening virtually from his home in Virginia.

During the grand opening, ASPIE featured 10 artists, including five from Lancaster County. Sixty-five people attended the event, and donors took home a total of 46 works of art, including paintings, photographic prints, metal sculptures, wooden toys and note cards. The five local artists spent time at the gallery, interacting with attendees.

ASPIE will host another weekend event at the gallery in the fall. Until then, the gallery will be open by appointment only, and those interested in viewing the artworks may call 207-412-8090.

Seniors frompg 12

may be alone if a spouse has predeceased them or if they are divorced. Loneliness may grow into depression. One way to help a senior feel appreciated is by sharing meals together. Designate a day or two each week to gather at the dinner table.

Serve as a chauffeur. Offer to drive a senior to a store or appointments. While communities may have taxi services or even accessible senior rides, sometimes it can be more efficient for seniors to rely on others for rides. People may also take a senior along when shopping at the supermarket.

Invite seniors to events. Those who have a special event coming up, such as a child’s birthday or graduation, or a religious occasion, may invite a senior neighbor to the celebration. The event may brighten the senior’s day and provide a change of routine and scenery.

There is no shortage of ways for people to give back to the seniors in their life and in their community.
