MOPW Plans Fifth Clothing Giveaway By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The fifth annual clothing giveaway hosted by the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Women (MOPW) will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 7 a.m. to noon at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1188 Valley Road, 4 miles east of Quarryville on Route 372. Why open so early? “’Cause they’re here at 6 o’clock, waiting,” said MOPW member Marlene Fromm. The giveaway was created following the example of a church in Willow Street, and it has continued to be popular. “People are shopping for school clothes, and it’s inexpensive,” explained MOPW member Shirley Miller. She noted that clothing, shoes, and accessories will be free of charge, but

attendees are invited to bring donations - either nonperishable food or cash - for the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank. The MOPW members have been collecting clothing and other items from church members and from supporters in the general community. Nancy Harnish related how a personal shopping trip to Waltman’s Hidden Treasures in Buck has resulted in a partnership between the consignment shop and the church. The store had been looking for a charitable way to dispose of unsold children’s clothes, and when the owners learned that clothing for youngsters is in high demand at the giveaway, Waltman’s signed on to donate items. “God sent me there that day,” Harnish remarked. Gap Relief Auction Set In Quarryville Kuhl Women Serve As Agriculture Ambassadors By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Quilts galore will be among the many items up for bids at the 71st annual Gap Relief Auction that will be held in Quarryville on Aug. 9 and 10. The 71st annual Gap Relief Auction will be held at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, on Friday, Aug. 9, and Saturday, Aug. 10. The event is hosted by Anabaptist churches that support the relief, development, and peace work of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). The auction is named for its original location: Sam Summers’ farm in Gap. The auction festivities will kick off on Aug. 9 with a pork roast dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Folks may dine in or buy

meals to go. Roast pork will also be available by the quart. A blood drive will run from 4 to 8 p.m., and a preview of auction items will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Dozens of quilts will be on display, and visitors may inspect items that will be sold on Aug. 10. A special time of singing will be observed from 6:30 to 7 p.m., and an offering for MCC will be accepted at 7 p.m. The auction will kick off at 7:15 p.m. at the fresh produce stand in the auction barn. state levels, titles are awarded on a firstcome, first-served basis. The titleholders in Ohio and Pennsylvania both have competitions for the respective state titles. Pennsylvania’s contest will be held in March 2020. In 2019, Rebecca and Harper Chase held the same titles as they will hold in 2020, and Harper Chase was also named the 2019 Pennsylvania Runner-Up Tiny Miss Agriculture USA. Cassidy noted that 48 contestants in 11 age divisions competed at the state level. Public speaking skills make up a significant part of the contestants’ scores, although it is not stressed quite so emphatically for the youngest divisions, which even included a baby division last year. “People see the little kid with the crown, and it draws their attention, Rebecca said. “The older queens can then start a conversation. “What I love about Miss Agriculture USA is we talk about all areas of agriculture, Cassidy added. “It’s a broad spectrum of knowledge. Cassidy grew up in Lancaster city, but she appreciated the rich farmland that surrounded it. In high school, her family moved to the Penn Manor School District, and she made friends who were FFA members. She became even more involved with agriculture after meeting the man who would become her husband, Alex Kuhl, who was a high school rodeo athlete. Now, the extended Kuhl family shares a house in Willow Street. The Kuhls have four dwarf rabbits, two dogs, a gecko, and a horse that they board on a nearby farm. A few months ago, they hatched four Khaki Campbell ducks. “Through that, we’ve seen what ag is, but there’s so much more, Cassidy remarked. She noted that the girls’ involvement in Miss Agriculture USA has been a learning experience for all three of them. “We’ve learned so much, she said. “You don’t have to live on a farm to be in ag. Rebecca, who is homeschooled and will be entering 10th grade in a few

with Centre County Farm Tours, often with other titleholders. “When we do events, a lot of girls invite other queens, Cassidy said. “It’s like a big family. The titleholders also act as resources, sharing knowledge on diverse ag-related topics. When one of the Kuhls’ rabbits fell ill, they reached out to the network and received help. Last year, Harper Chase distributed prize ribbons with the fair queen at the West Lampeter Fair. The Kuhls hope to become more involved in Lancaster County, and they are available to give presentations on agriculture-related topics and to appear at events. Pictured on front: Penn Manor High School students in a plant science class examined the rings of a tree removed as part of the high school construction project. The school and Warfel Construction will host a career exploration event on Sept. 14.

R044405

Penn Manor High School and Warfel Construction will host a “Careers in Construction Exploration Event” for parents and students from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the construction site on the high school campus, 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville. During the event, participants will tour the site and learn about construction careers, including the roles of carpenters, electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers, project managers, virtual design coordinators, drone pilots, and construction superintendents. The event is not limited to Penn Manor students and is open to any student in grades seven to 12. Student attendees must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The deadline to register is Monday, Sept. 9. To register, readers may visit www.warfelcc.com/student_tour. Sept. 14 will not be the first time Warfel and the high school have collaborated. For Penn Manor High School students and staff members, the massive construction project that began this past year at the school brought parking restrictions, relocated classrooms, and the constant din of heavy equipment just outside classrooms and offices. It also provided opportunities for students to learn about real-world math, engineering, and design applications and to study the life cycle of trees. Math students learned how construction workers and surveyors use trigonometry and algebra in the field. Agricultural mechanics students learned about the inner workings of a temporary ag shop as it was being built, and plant science students got to examine the rings of a tree cut down as part of the project. Warfel Construction also established an internship that enabled one student to attend weekly construction meetings and visit on-site work, and groups of students were able to tour the construction site and learn about the excavating, plumbing, drywall, technology, and other trades represented by the workers they observed. “When there’s a construction site in your back yard, you take advantage of the valuable career exploration for your students,” said Michelle Wagner, support and transition teacher at the school. “This fits into our goal of transition and preparing students for life after high school.” Staff members from Warfel and Boro Construction, the electrical contractor on the project, visited three of math teacher Gary Luft’s classes in April and May to talk about their roles in the project. “The students were given an overview and the phasing of the total construction project, as well as an explanation of what was currently being done on site,” Luft said. “It was very beneficial for the students to hear from the experts in the field.” Meagan Slates’ plant science class got to examine the remains of a giant tree cut down during construction as part of a “Tree of Life” lab. Students counted the tree stump’s growth rings to estimate the age of the tree - more than 50 years - and then compared it to the tree they were studying in the lab. “This was a great experience, and I’m so thankful that Warfel and the Penn Manor administration were so open to sharing these experiences with our students,” Slates said. The interactions were designed to help demystify the construction field, said Warfel project engineer Kevin McGuire. “We want to involve the students and then turn that into a discussion about what they plan to do in the future. What’s going on outside the window, and how could that involve you?” he said. “We need more conversations like that in the education field.” McGuire said he hopes to continue the collaboration as the construction project progresses over the next two years.

The community is invited to take a tour of historic Sadsburyville without having to brave the August heat. As part of Chester County’s Town Tours and Village Walks program, a special supper lecture and armchair tour will take place on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Historic Yellow Springs, 1685 Art School Road, Chester Springs. Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. The program will feature photographs and a presentation by Dick Dague, president of the Sadsbury Township Historical Society. “I already had a slideshow that I presented to the township called ‘Historic Buildings in Sadsbury Township.’ I’ve taken the slideshow I already had and eliminated everything that was not Sadsburyville,” Dague said. “I parked my car at the township building and walked from one end of Sadsburyville to the other and back.”

Located on U.S. Business Route 30 about 5 miles west of Coatesville, the settlement that would become Sadsburyville began as early as 1729. The area experienced growth in 1794 when the first macadamized road in the country was laid through the settlement and the Sadsbury Hotel became a welcome stop for turnpike travelers. Early settlers were a mixture of Friends from England and Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. Some believe that Sadsburyville may have been named for Sudbury in the county of Suffolk, England. Those who attend the upcoming program will see images and hear stories from the past as well as get a chance to view the community as it exists today. Both historic and modern sites will be included in the lecture. Weather permitting, a guided tour of Historic Yellow Springs will be offered after the lecture. “I was thinking it made more sense to go to the dinner, see the slideshow and then drive through the town so you would know what to look for. But it wouldn’t hurt to drive through ahead of time,” Dague said. Dague has a personal connection to Sadsbury Township history. His family has lived in the township since 1720, and his great-great-great-great-grandfather was the first pastor of the Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church in Parkesburg. Space in the lecture program is limited to 50 participants, and tickets must be purchased in advance. For more information on the event and to purchase tickets, readers may visit www.chescoplanning.org/His Resources/TownToursAug.cfm. Tickets can also be purchased at www.eventbrite.com by searching for “CCHPN Supper Lecture & Armchair Tour - Village of Sadsburyville.” This is the 25th summer of Chester County’s Town Tours and Village Walks program. Miller noted that there will be a lot of clothing sized 3X for women this year. There will also be numerous shoes. “One lady gave us 60 pairs of shoes,” Fromm marveled. “We have lots and lots of new flip-flops,” Harnish added. Upcoming tours include “Johnsontown in Downingtown (Circa 1875): A Town Within A Town” on Thursday, Aug. 22, beginning at 5 p.m. In the late 1800s, Johnsontown was initially the home of Irish residents, many of whom worked on the railroad. Parking for the walking tour will be available on the west side of St. Anthony’s Lodge, 259 Church St., Downingtown. Additional free parking will be available at the Downingtown Borough lot (Johnsontown Park) at 122 Viaduct Ave. A shuttle bus will be available to transport guests to St. Anthony’s Lodge. On Thursday, Aug. 29, the tour will be at Brandywine Meadow Farm, home of Charles E. Mathers Brandywine Hounds (circa 1901). Included will be a visit from the Radnor Hunt and an optional 25th Town Tour anniversary dinner. Parking will be available at Radley Run Country Club, 1100 Country Club Road, West Chester. Giant Food Stores has announced that Giant Direct, Powered by Peapod, is now available at 100 Giant stores and Martin’s Food Markets, under the Martin’s Direct banner, across four states. Giant Direct is Giant Food Stores’ online grocery service that offers pickup and delivery. Giant Food Stores president Nicholas Bertram and store manager Tim Dinsmore celebrated the opening of the 100th store to offer Giant Direct with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 12 at the Giant store located at 255 S. Spring Garden St., Carlisle. In celebration of this e-commerce achievement, Giant presented a $1,000 donation to Project SHARE, a Carlisle-based organization that provides groceries and other essentials to more than 1,000 local families in need each month. Giant introduced Giant Direct earlier this year to accelerate the company’s e-commerce strategy. In February, the company opened a 38,000-square-foot Giant Direct e-commerce hub in Lancaster that serves as a central shipping location for online delivery orders in the region. The hub also permits customers to

CVS Expands Medication Disposal Program CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health, has announced the expansion of its safe medication disposal program in Pennsylvania, adding disposal units in 80 CVS Pharmacy stores in communities across the state by the end of the year. This is in addition to the existing 26 units already installed, bringing the in state total to 106. Promptly disposing unused medications can help reduce the potential that they will be diverted or misused. Nationwide, the company has installed more than 1,300 in-store safe medication disposal units. The company has also donated more than 970 units to community organizations such as police departments, including 135 units in Pennsylvania. Through this national effort, 408 metric tons, or around 900,000 pounds, of unwanted medication has been collected, including over 41,000 pounds in Pennsylvania alone.

CVS Pharmacy plans to roll out additional safe medication disposal units across the country by the end of 2019 as part of a commitment announced at the end of last year to help provide more disposal options in communities. The company is also partnering with Google Maps to make it easier for consumers to find year-round medication disposal options. CVS Health’s commitment to helping prevent and address prescription drug misuse extends to community education and increasing access to the opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone. The company’s Pharmacists Teach program brings CVS pharmacists to schools across the country to talk to students and parents about the dangers of prescription drug abuse. More than 507,000 students across the country, including over 30,700 in Pennsylvania, have participated in the program. General information about CVS Pharmacy is available at www.cvshealth.com.
