only had one child who was unable to testify in court, and that really shows how these techniques can help people understand and communicate with other people.” Steve has written several articles on natural horsemanship and recently published his first book, “And a Little Child Shall Lead Them: Learning From Wild Horses and Small Children.” Steve and his wife, Beth, have three daughters and five grandchildren. On Saturday, Sept. 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Steve will visit Pennsylvania to host a Mill Swamp Indian Horses Round Pen Clinic at 132 Hollow Road, Quarryville. The clinic is sponsored by Noble Hill Horse Rescue. Steve noted that the clinic will differ from typical horse training sessions because it will be on a much deeper level. For one week in July, Todd Brown, technology education teacher at Solanco High School, hosted a summer robotics camp. Over 40 students between grades four and seven attended the camp. “The turnout was wonderful for it being the first time we ever did something like this,” noted Brown. At the camp, students learned the basics of robotics and coding principles and then used this foundation to solve real-world robotic problem scenarios. One of the problems that the students were asked to solve involved an autonomous driving robot and gave students an idea of the challenges that Tesla, Uber, and Google are facing with their selfdriving autonomous vehicles. Downtown Oxford will return to its First Friday series on Sept. 3 from 3 to 7 p.m. with its seventh annual First Friday Car Show. In addition to cars, the event will feature music, automotive artwork, and an autograph-signing opportunity by the 2013 ISMA champion “Liquid” Lou Cicconi. Vehicle registrants will receive a commemorative magnet and will be considered for a first-, second-, or third-place award in the car category as well as best of show in the bike and truck categories. The deadline to register a vehicle is Friday, Aug. 20. There is a fee for registration. If spots are available, late registrations will be welcomed until 4 p.m. on the day of the event. Solanco’s Katie Urbine, a rising junior, earned All-American honors in two events at the USATF Junior Olympics National Championships held at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla., from July 26 to Aug. 1. Urbine, in a field of 36 vaulters, placed eighth in the pole vault (15and 16-year-old division), clearing 10 feet, 10 inches. On July 30, Urbine ran the opening leg of the 4x100 relay (15- and 16-year-old division). Urbine and

“We have a certain population that misses out on summer camps because they’re not involved in sports, so I asked myself, ‘Why don’t we have an academic camp?’” said Brown. “I hope that the seeds planted during the robotics camp will grow over the years, and I’m excited to see where they go.” Solanco High School students Kyle Fisher, Adam Noel, and Trent McDowell served as mentors for the duration of camp. “The mentors did a fantastic job of helping out,” stated Brown. Brown noted that he hopes robotics camp will return every summer.

Top eight place winners in each event earn All-American status. “Alana Yoder was our last AllAmerican,” pointed out Solanco head coach Jen McDowell. “In 2016, she was eighth in the 800, and in 2017, she was second in the 800 and eighth in the 1500.” Urbine trained and competed this summer with the Lancaster City
Track Club under coach Derek Jennings, a Solanco graduate and head track and field coach at McCaskey. “It was a fantastic experience for Katie to compete in a national event,” said Diana Urbine, Katie’s mother. “She was supposed to run the 60-meter in the New Balance indoor nationals in March of 2020 and pole vault in the outdoor nationals in June, but both events were canceled due to the pandemic.” Urbine’s successful summer included PRs in the 100 (12.46 FAT) and the pole vault (11-9) at the Elizabethtown All-Comer Meet on June 2.

On July 25, 1921, Vanda Nesti Bennett was born in Pistoia - a city in the region of Tuscany, Italy. When Vanda was 9 years old, she and her family left Italy and came to America. After docking in Ellis Island, they took a train to Pittsburgh, where Vanda’s father worked in a steel mill. After marrying her husband, Van William Bennett, in 1948, Vanda gave birth to four children: Bill, Bob, Mary Jean,

Lions Club To Host Golf Outing The mission of the Willow Street Lions Club is to create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services through community involvement and international cooperation. To accomplish this goal, the Lions Club supports various efforts, including Boy Scout Troop 58 and its Scout house, Solanco Food Bank, medical equipment for people in need, the Lions International SightFirst II campaign, Willow Street Lions Club Community Center
maintenance, and scholarships for Lampeter-Strasburg School District students. One of the club’s major fundraisers is its annual golf outing. The 25th annual Willow Street Lions Club golf outing will take place on Friday, Aug. 27, at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. Registration will open at 8 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. in scramble format. The registration fee includes green fees, the use of a cart, lunch, and giveaways. The event will also feature prizes and contests, including a hole-in-one contest.
“This event is perfect for golf lovers and those who want to support the Lions,” stated Willow Street Lions Club member Tom Gregory. “It will be a fun day filled with prizes.” Spots are limited. Van William never finished high school, so it was very important to him that his children attended college. “All four of them went to college and they all got scholarships,” shared Vanda. “I’m proud of my family.” Having just turned 100-yearsold, Vanda says that her age has never held her back. “Her idea of relaxation is working all day, and she’s only mad when she’s bored,” explained Bill. Vanda has volunteered throughout her entire life and recently sewed over 400 bibs for people in skilled care at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community (QPRC), where she is a residential living resident. Holly Metzler, a receptionist at QPRC, noted that Vanda is an amazing woman. “She is a wonderful lady,” stated Metzler. “At night, the lobby turns into a fun place where all the residents gather and have a laugh until about 9 p.m.” Metzler explained that the residents gather because Vanda is there. “I’ve had a pretty good life,”said Vanda.
Solanco Golf Team Tryouts Planned Tryouts for the Solanco High School coed golf team will be held on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 16 to 17, from 12:30 p.m. at Tanglewood Manor Golf Course, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville.
