Labor Day Auction To Feature Tools And Much More By Dayna M. Reidenouer

As Hospice & Community Care (HCC) donor relations manager Coco Minardi reviewed the items pulled for a photo to advertise the 35th annual Labor Day Auction set for Saturday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 2, she laughed. “An autographed football, a life-size NASCAR poster, a quilt, and a mailbox: That’s the randomness of the auction right there.” Indeed, at first glance it might seem like the epic two-day sale is full of a jumble of items every year, but it is all very deliberate. The things that have been donated to the auction are grouped by type, such as plants, quilts, sports memorabilia, used cars, and

artwork. This year, the event will feature a tool auction for the first time. “We work with the Amish community, and they do all of our food, which brought in $80,000 last year, but not many Amish people attend the auction,” Minardi explained. In an effort to appeal to more Amish folks, the auction committee asked for advice, and “add tools” was the resounding response. “We called local construction companies, and hospice families have been cleaning out their sheds,” Minardi said. Decommissioned commercial-grade tools and equipment, as well as household tools, have been donated for the auction, and they will be sold to the highest bidders on Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to noon in the second half of See Labor Day Auction pg 12

Hospice & Community Care staff members (from left) Devon Fiore, special events coordinator; Coco Minardi, donor relations manager; and Allie Bucher, communications manager, display a tiny sample of the items that will be sold at the 35th annual Labor Day Auction in Quarryville on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2.

Last year, nine stylists gave 133 haircuts. “It really got big,” Duncan said of the event, which debuted in 2017 with between 70 and 80 students receiving free cuts. See Preschool Pebbles pg 11

Bethesda United Methodist Church in Holtwood hosted a patriotic service during worship at 10:45 a.m. on July 14. The guest speaker was Harold Billow, a 96-year-old World War II Army veteran from Mount Joy. Billow shared his account of survival at the Malmedy Massacre in Belgium on Dec. 17, 1944, during the second day of the Battle of the Bulge. The 285th Field Artillery Observation Battalion suffered great loss by a German combat unit. The event was noted as the worst single massacre of American troops in World War II, and Billow is known as the last survivor. The July 14 patriotic service included congregational singing of Billow ’s favorite hymn,

Giant Food Stores has announced it is piloting a new way for its customers to increase their savings through personalized offers on products they already buy with the new Choice Rewards program. An enhancement to its current Gas Extra Rewards program, Choice Rewards brings customized savings and rewards to customers via the Giant or Martin’s app. By leveraging smartphone technology, Giant aims to provide relevant rewards to their participating customers. Choice Rewards is now available in a select pilot market, and it will

roll out by the end of the year. Just like they do in Giant’s current program, customers participating in the pilot earn points on qualifying purchases at the rate of one point for every $1 spent. New through Choice Rewards, they will also be able to earn points through targeted “bonus earn” offers. W hen it comes time to redeem points, customers can either redeem their points for discounts on gas - with 100 points equaling a $0.10 discount per gallon up to 25 gallons - or choose among new offers such as converting points to dollars to save directly on

groceries. In addition to viewing their personalized offers and rewards earnings on the app, customers can load digital coupons, activate Deli Order Ahead, or place a grocery order with Giant Direct. In the app, customers can track their earning progress while managing their points and rewards. Points earned expire on the last day of the month following the month in which they were earned. Stair Climb committee has planned its ninth annual event. The climb will take place at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Sunday, Sept. 8. Registration will open at 8 a.m., and the event will start at 9 a.m. A warm-up for participants will be led prior to the ceremony’s opening. A musician will perform the national anthem. The committee is working on securing the services of a bagpiper to play solemn music during the ceremony too. Prior to the beginning of the climb, a roll call of the 343 deceased firefighters will be held. Each participant will receive a badge containing the name, rank, and photo of one of the firefighters. A video will play on the stadium’s

jumbo screen, and the badgeholders will be asked to stand when their person is identified. During the climb, moments of silence will be held at the times the towers fell. At the end of the climb, when a participant finishes ascending the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - which firefighters attempted on 9/11 - they will read the name on their badge and ring a bell, symbolizing the completion of the deceased person’s climb. “That really sank in with people,” Yuill said of the bell-ringing aspect, which was introduced at last year’s climb. “It personalized it, and they really liked it.” The stair climb will be held rain or shine. It rained during last year’s event, and attendance was down, but the event still raised $17,000 for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. “We’re not money-driven. That’s not why we do the climb,” Yuill said. “Our goal is to remember the 343,” committee member Joyce Mokros added. Yuill praised the 2018 participants, noting that there was some scrambling to move the opening ceremony from the field to the concourse, but the folks involved were flexible. Mokros pointed out that it was all in a day’s work for first responders. “They fight fires rain or shine,” Mokros remarked. Participation in the stair climb is open to folks of all ages. Children must be accompanied by adults. There is a cost to participate. Folks may register in advance and be guaranteed to receive an event T-shirt by visit www.lancasterstair climb.org. Online registration will close on Friday, Aug. 23. After that date, folks will have to register at the event. Credit cards will be accepted for online registration, but only cash and checks will be accepted for day-of registration. Spectators are encouraged to attend and will be admitted free of charge. In addition to Yuill and Mokros, the Lancaster Memorial Stair Climb committee includes Frank Mokros, Dawn MokrosRathgeb, Roger Howard Jr., Don Schoenberger, and Mark Cohen. Haircuts will be given to students who will be entering preschool through 12th grade. While Duncan hopes to especially appeal to families who are experiencing financial difficulties, being school-age is the only requirement. Additionally, volunteers will do students’ nails at no charge. “We have so many (people) donating and helping. I love it,” Duncan said. The church’s playground will be open during the event, and a movie will be shown in the worship center. Popcorn will be served in the lobby. All youngsters will be invited to choose a prize from a treasure chest before they leave. During the event, parents and guardians will be welcome to shop the HOPE Chest, a new ministry of the church. School clothes, accessories, and many other items will be available free of charge. “We have a lot of really nice stuff,” Duncan said. Free backpacks and some school supplies will be available upon request. Duncan began the Scissors Snipping event and recently opened the HOPE Chest because of needs she saw in families she met through the preschool. She noted that when finances are tight, haircuts and clothing become luxuries. Duncan expressed her hope that with fresh haircuts, children and teenagers will feel good about themselves when they go back to school, starting the year on a positive note. Preschool Pebbles’ school year will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Classes for children ages 2 through 5 will meet from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Enrollment is open for all classes. Duncan shared that the mission of the preschool is to help students love to learn, make friends, practice being a positive part of a community, and learn about Jesus. The preschool boasts small class sizes, where students are given plenty of opportunities for play-based learning. “Hands-on learning: That’s the big thing for me,” Duncan commented. “I like to touch on all five senses in everything we do.” Every month has a theme and related activities. The theme for September will be apples. Students will be able to taste red, green, and yellow apples and compare them. They will paint with the fruit and interact with apple-shaped objects in the play areas. “Children learn better when they are interacting, doing, and trying things on their own and having fun and enjoying themselves rather than watching and repeating what a teacher does,” Duncan explained. “I want to get them to think for themselves.” Folks who would like to learn more about Preschool Pebbles or the Scissors Snipping event may call or text Duncan at 717-3444790 or find “Preschool Pebbles” on Facebook.

will be held at noon both days. Television personalities Corinne Lillis and Anne Shannon will host the auctions, during which attendees may virtually purchase days of care for hospice clients. The average daily cost of providing hospice care for one person is $187, Minardi said. The proceeds from the Labor Day Auction will go directly to HCC’s programs. The nonprofit organization has operations in Lancaster and York counties and provides palliative care, bereavement help, chaplain and auxiliary services, individual and group counseling, physical and online resource libraries, and more. In 2018, HCC served more than 15,000 families. Minardi noted that HCC serves more than 60 percent of the people who die in Lancaster County and a quarter of the deceased in York County. HCC also offers services for people who have experienced tragic loss, including the death of pets. To donate items for the auction, readers may contact special events coordinator Devon Fiore at 717-391-2434 or dfiore@hospicecommunity.org. cheese baked in a buttery soft pretzel crust - will be available when the food tents open at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 2. Minardi noted that an HCC volunteer is known to bring a cooler to the sale so she can buy two dozen breakfast logs to take home, freeze, and enjoy later. Sept. 2 will also feature barbecued chicken and ribs, as well as doughnuts made on-site. The food offerings on both days will include fried shrimp, a salad bar, fresh fruit, smoothies, chocolate milk, and more. Minardi and the auction committee are still accepting donations for the auction. They are especially looking for used cars and quilts. A number of unique items have already been donated. Of special note are Ty Cobb baseball cards from 1909 and 1911. The collectors’ items will be sold on Sept. 2 at noon in the sports building. An Amish buggy will be up for bids, as well as sheds, a gazebo, and vacation stays for large groups of people. Recommendations of delivery services for the structures will be provided. the plant building. “We’re hoping we strike a chord with people who are do-ityourselfers or Amish,” Minardi remarked. The Labor Day Auction started in Lampeter, but four years ago, the event moved to the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, where it has flourished. The site offers ample free parking, and there is team parking at the venue as well. Golf carts will be available to shuttle people to and from their cars as needed. Minardi reported that the first auction more than three decades ago raised $1,300, and the advertising material was not even the size of a half-sheet of letter paper. Last year’s event brought in $760,000. “We can’t fit all (of the details) on anything smaller than eight pages,” she marveled. The fairgrounds will open at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 so visitors may register for bidder numbers, purchase their all-you-can-eat food passes, and preview the items. The food tents will open on Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. and will feature omelets and sticky buns for breakfast and pork barbecue for lunch. The newest Station Cases exhibit at the Lancaster Amtrak Station, 53 McGovern Ave., has been installed. It was created by Russianborn metal sculptor and jeweler Dmitrii Volkov. His exhibit features a metal sculpture of a bird, made of iron and fabricated using old blacksmithing techniques. Managed by Lancaster Public Art, the Station Cases program gives artists the opportunity to show site-specific artwork in the Lancaster train station. The exhibit has been rotated following artist Paolo Del Toro’s display in the cases. Volkov’s sculpture will be featured through Friday, Dec. 27.
