Dairy judging team will take part in eastern states competition

Pequea Church, 40 Church
Road, Lancaster, will host the first session of a new GriefShare program on Tuesday, Aug. 22, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sessions will continue every Tuesday until the final meeting on Nov. 14, which will include a dinner and candlelighting ceremony.
GriefShare is a program designed to provide resources for those experiencing the loss of a loved one. The material is rooted in biblical teachings, and it seeks to offer an environment of support for people to build relationships with others who have encountered the same difficulties. Participants in the program include those in the Penn Manor, Quarryville and Willow Street communities, but anyone who is interested in participating may register.
This year, GriefShare will be using the fourth edition of the program. The latest edition has been overhauled to include topics that relate to suicide, loneliness, fear, sadness and anxiety, and it will detail methods that can be used to manage such issues. The new version of the program will also cover challenges that have been caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDIn June, Solanco FFA’s dairy judging team placed second in the state competition at Penn State University, qualifying it to compete in the eastern states competition in Massachusetts. The event, which is known as the Big E fair, will take place
on Friday, Sept. 15, and Saturday, Sept. 16.
In the year leading up to the state competition, the members of the dairy judging team convened weekly to prepare by studying together. Solanco High School students Kyrsten Byers, Brooke Jennings, Keeley Kreider and
Addison O’Donnell, reviewed dairy industry vocabulary and terminology, and they frequently visited local farms to practice judging dairy cows.
On the first day of the state competition, each team member individually took a test that evaluated her knowledge of topics such as
bovine anatomy, diet, and illnesses. After the individual assessment, the team participated in a group activity that entailed solving a specific issue on a dairy farm. This year, the group was tasked with finding a solution for a farm that was experiencing production issues; the students put their heads together to analyze each

“These topics are important. People have been more isolated over these last few years from the pandemic,” said Trina Barr, who first introduced the program to Pequea Church in 2003. “Mental health is not often talked about in the same way we talk about other health issues, and there’s a need for it.”
This will be the first time that GriefShare has released a new edition since 2014, and the changes to the

Three Legacies Wrestling will present the inaugural Red Rose Rumble on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. at the Barnstormers’ stadium in Lancaster. Several internationally known wrestling stars, many with past or current ties to major wrestling organizations such as WWE and Impact Wrestling, will participate. These wrestlers include Rhyno, Heath Miller, Dirty Dango, Ricardo Rodriguez, Shannon Moore, Snitsky and Delirious.
In addition, regional and homegrown talent will be involved in the eight-match card, which will also feature the finale of the tournament
to crown the first-ever 3LW heavyweight champion. The event will include Tarzan Duran taking on Breaux Keller, plus a 15-person Red Rose Rumble for a future shot at the championship, a Fatal Four-Way Match featuring four female competitors and more.
One match will determine who will be the owner of the wrestling organization on Sunday, Aug. 20. Current owner and former WWE wrestler Ricardo Rodriguez will seek to fend off a challenge to ownership from Kevin Murphy.
For fans who cannot attend the show in person, the show will be offered via a livestream on Premier Streaming Network and then available after the show as on-demand content on the platform.

The program will continue building on the information from previous years’ symposiums.
This year’s webinar topics will include a large-scale solar overview; solar development from the perspectives of the
landowner, developer, and municipality; public utility commission considerations; and Pennsylvania-New JerseyMaryland interconnection considerations.
Four hours of Pennsylvania continuing legal education credits are available to attendees. To complete the required registration by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22, visit www.bit.ly/solarlaw2023. piece of the farm’s operation to determine the root of the problem. After concluding that the issue stemmed from a lack of proper feed, the group presented its solution to two judges, and the team members answered questions on their approach.
On the second day of the competition, the team visited the campus’s barn to judge multiple classes of cows. The students judged six cows in total, and they explained their placement decisions by providing their reasoning to a panel of judges. To earn extra points, the members of the team memorized their explanations of the placements. When judging the cows, the students primarily looked at each animal’s mammary system and physical characteristics, such as adequate veining and teat placement. By analyzing the cows’ physical
attributes, the team members were able to determine which cows would produce the highest volume of milk on a dairy farm.
“I knew nothing about dairy judging until this year,” said Jennings, Solanco FFA president. “I was drawn to it because I loved learning about cows, and I had a lot of faith that we would do well at the competition.”
The dairy judging team is currently preparing for the Big E fair, where it will compete against FFA teams from across the eastern region. The event will involve similar activities to test the students’ knowledge and ability to accurately judge various bovine classes. “(To prepare,) I personally will spend more time looking through vocabulary and style guides,” said Byers. “I look forward to being able to see dairy judging taken to a whole new level.”

The Awana program at Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) is not new. In fact, the Wednesday evening children’s activity will be entering its 40th year when it starts this fall. But organizers like Heather Ensslen help keep the program fresh for the more than 60 area children who attend on average. “Last year we did Critter Cards, and the children learned about animals and collected cards,” recalled Ensslen. “We had a lot of fun with that, so we wanted another yearlong theme.”
This year’s theme, “Around the World,” will be first explored when Awana holds a kickoff and registration event at the church, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 3 p.m. The experience will include an International Food Faire with up to 10 tables representing different countries, where volunteers will hand
out information and food samples. Among the areas that will be represented are Mexico, Thailand, the Middle East, and Ghana, Africa. Students from the Paloma School of Irish Dance will perform as well.
Ensslen explained that the international theme is based on a study that showed more than 5 million children engage weekly in Awana’s Bible-focused, child discipleship ministries in a variety of countries. Awana will be held at the church each Wednesday from Sept. 6 to May 8, beginning at 6:40 p.m. each week. “We will (visit) a different country each month,” explained Ensslen, who noted that children will watch a video, talk about a country, and then collect a card, like a passport, for that country. “If they earn so many by the end of the club year, they will receive an award,” said Ensslen. Awana clubs are divided into four age groups. The

Penn State Extension will offer a virtual workshop on how to correctly prune trees.
“Why We Should Be Making Small Pruning Cuts” will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 29, from noon to 1 p.m.
Branch failure can be caused by wind, ice, snow or a climber aloft. Such breakage can result in costly property damage, personal injury, power outages or blocked roads.
During the upcoming workshop, attendees will learn how tree branches deal with loading throughout the tree structure. There will also be a discussion on the biology around why small cuts are better than larger cuts and the impacts of
decay on wound closure after pruning.
The program is designed to benefit municipal managers, foresters and arborists, as well as others interested in urban and community forestry.
The webinar is free, but a fee may be associated with the following credits: Society of American Foresters (CFE), pending approval; International Society of Arboriculture; Certificate of Attendance for Professionals and Others to SelfReport; and Peer Volunteer/Master Gardener Update Training.
The program is being presented by the Penn State Extension in partnership
with the U.S. Forest Service, State and Private Forestry; Pennsylvania DCNR, Bureau of Forestry; and Pennsylvania TreeVitalize Program, Pennsylvania Community Trees. To register, visit https://extension.psu.edu/ education-format/webinars and search for “Why We Should Be Making Small Pruning Cuts.”

group for 2-year-olds is called Puggles. Children ages 3 to 5 attend Cubbies. Children in kindergarten to second grade go to Sparks, and third- through sixth-graders go to Truth and Training, called T&T. Awana opens with a whole group gathering for song, and then the clubs break into smaller groups to go over workbooks and memory verses. Each club has large group time and a game time that Ensslen called “unique to that group.” The Cubbies also have puppet and craft time.
Along with the international theme, Ensslen said some special theme nights are planned based on activities that have proven popular in the past. One of those is a neon night, which involves neon clothing and glow items, and another involves children creating cards for church attendees who are hospitalized or homebound. “The kids loved making the cards, and people loved receiving the cards as well. Ensslen noted that the annual Grand Prix pinewood derby will be scheduled for a Saturday in February, as well.
It takes more than 40 adult volunteers to help set up, tear down, and shepherd the children who attend Awana. Ensslen noted that some volunteers have been serving the program for more than 30 years.
Those who plan to attend the Awana kickoff should visit https://calvarymonu ment.org/ministries/ children. Individuals interested in helping with the International Food Faire may sign up at https://tinyurl. com/5ekan6c3. Readers who have questions may email awana@calvarymonument .org.
