Solanco Fair Is Canceled each member of this community above all else. “ The board members noted that they hope that the cancellation of the Solanco Fair will help to slow or stop the spread of COVID-19 in southern Lancaster County, and they are looking forward to getting through these challenging times and making the 2021 Solanco Fair the best ever. Plans are being made to hold the livestock shows and auction as scheduled, following all CDC guidelines and state mandates, the board said. Information regarding the show and sale will be available on the Solanco Fair Facebook page and in local newspapers. Questions can be directed to fair board president Rob Lowery or general manager Scott Peiffer at info@solancofair.net. Additionally, since the state level is proceeding with fair queen activities, the Solanco Fair will host a contest to choose royalty. Details regarding the fair queen

contest will be announced when they become available, the board said. Home bakers who were looking forward to entering any of the four special baking contests at the Solanco Fair may now turn their sights to the Pennsylvania Farm Show. At this point, should the Farm Show take place in January 2021 as scheduled, the 2020 special baking contests will be held as open contests. The prequalification requirement of winning first place at a fair that is a member of the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF) will be waived. According to the June edition of “Fair Talk,” the PSACF newsletter, sponsorships have been secured in order to offer the Incredible Angel Food Cake, Blue Ribbon Apple Pie, Homemade Chocolate Cake, and PA Preferred Junior Baking contests. Details on how to register and enter these contests will be posted at www.pafairs.org.

SECA Introduces New Dash & Splash 5K 30th Annual Golf Outing Also Planned The Southern End Community Association (SECA) is looking forward to

Road, Quarryville. Players should arrive at least 30 minutes before the starting time of 8 a.m. Registration will open at 7:30 a.m. Solanco High School’s golf team is slated to host a putting contest, and SECA board members will staff a mobile beverage cart. Past board member Kim Risk noted that the on-course beverage cart was a new addition to the outing last year and was highly successful. Providence Autos is the hole-in-one sponsor on a designated par-3 hole. “If somebody gets a hole-in-one, they’ll have a new car,” Risk said. There are opportunities for other sponsorships as well. The deadline for businesses and individuals to sign on as sponsors and be recognized on signage is Wednesday, Aug. 19. The deadline for golfers to register is Friday, Aug. 21. Read-A-Thon Will Support Quarryville Library The Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, will host its first virtual Read-a-Thon on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event will be streamed on the library’s Facebook page via Facebook Live, and it will be viewable at https://quarryville library.org/virtual-programming/ afterward. Community members are invited to enjoy the show and donate to the library as they are able. “The need is great. Due to health and safety restrictions, all planned fundraisers for the library were canceled this year,” said youth services coordinator Sharon Roche. “Nearly all initiatives of our Friends group have also been temporarily postponed to protect vulnerable members from risk. Our passport office, a critical source of funding, has been inactive for months

and is only now reopening for limited appointments.” The Read-a-Thon will be a virtual celebration of literacy within the Southern End. Roche has gathered authors and readers spanning a variety of ages and genres to engage and inspire viewers. Notable authors who are slated to perform during the event include A.S. King, winner of the Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature and the Andre Norton Nebula Award for Middle Grade and Young Adult Fiction; Sandy Asher, winner of the National Jewish Book Award for Children’s Literature; Susan Mull, local activist, poet, and teacher; Lindsay Bandy, youth librarian at Manheim Public Library and soon-to-be-published YA author; JP Robinson, local author, educator, and frequent Quarryville Library See Quarryville Library pg 2

It’s official. Like nearly every community fair in Pennsylvania this year, the Solanco Fair has been canceled. The Solanco Fair Board announced the fair’s cancellation on Aug. 11, stating that all fair-related activities including the parade - that had been scheduled for Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 16 to 18, would not take place due to COVID-19 social restrictions. This would have been the 71st instance of the annual fair. “It is with great sadness and disappointment that this decision was made,” the board members wrote in a press release. “It was not an easy conclusion to reach. However, because of our great respect and appreciation for the residents of this area and the unwavering support that we have always enjoyed not only during fair week but throughout the year, we feel it is not only our top priority, but our responsibility to place the health and safety of

Keystone Wood Specialties recently announced that Nick Stoltzfus, vice president of operations, has been named as one of the Wood Industry 40 Under 40 award winners for 2020. The annual award, given by Woodworking Network, celebrates the next generation of industry professionals who are making an impact on wood products manufacturing in North America. Those selected are considered by their peers to be innovators, achievers and even disruptors who demonstrate excellence in the categories of productivity, profitability, social good, ingenuity, peer inspiration, product development, organizational leadership or another area. More than 140 submissions were received and evaluated by a team of six Woodworking Network editors. Harry Urban, Woodworking Network publisher, noted that this year’s honorees were able to keep their companies moving forward during the COVID-19 pandemic, while dedicating themselves to their communities and public causes. “As the vice president of operations for Keystone Wood Specialties, Nick Stoltzfus is helping to forge the future for his family’s nearly 50-year-old business, said Stoltzfus’ nominator in the nomination letter. visit https://secarec.org/28th -annual-golf-outing/ to download a registration form or contact Carol Gibson at 717-951-8545 or cgibson1112@comcast.net for more information. The golf outing typically concludes with a meal and awards presentation. However, due to COVID-19, this year’s meal will be a boxed lunch. Every registered golfer will receive a ticket that may be redeemed at Emory’s at Tanglewood, the golf course’s restaurant, any time after 10 a.m. Risk noted that one benefit of the new format is that golfers may eat whenever they get hungry instead of waiting until the completion of the round. The golf outing got its start when a group of businessmen put on a golf tournament on the Friday preceding Labor Day as a way to start the long weekend off early. A group of those golfers helped to form SECA’s board, and the tournament morphed into an event to introduce people to SECA, Risk said.

“It’s a fundraiser for us, but it’s also a way for us to let people know what SECA is doing,” she added. The fundraising aspect is especially important this year, related SECA administrative assistant Celeste Esposito. “Like so many (other organizations) have been, SECA has been hit hard (by the shutdown),” Esposito commented. SECA has not been able to offer as many activities this year, but one event that was scheduled in May has been rescheduled. The Dash & Splash 5K was originally slated as a grand opening for the renovated SECA pool, but even the renovation has been impacted by the shutdown. The manufacturer of the new slide has experienced delays, so that particular feature has not been shipped. The pool has been open this summer, though, and may stay open later than planned. “The hope is to keep the pool open on weekends in September because it stays hot,” Esposito said, adding that those plans are depen-

dent upon lifeguard availability. Keeping the pool open later will impact one other popular event. “Everybody’s been calling and asking about the Doggy Dip. We don’t have a date for it, but it won’t be on the typical Saturday after Labor Day,” she said. The Dash & Splash 5K will begin and finish at the SECA pool, 299 Park Ave., Quarryville, and the course will include the neighboring Solanco Fairgrounds. Registration will open at 8 a.m. The 1-mile fun run for children age 12 and under will start at 9:30 a.m. The 5K race will begin at 10 a.m., and awards will be presented at 11 a.m. Then, everyone with a race bib or fun run medal will be admitted to the pool free of charge. Regular admission rates will apply for the public. The pool will close at 7 p.m. that day. The deadline to be guaranteed an event T-shirt and receive a discount on the registration fees is Monday, Aug. 24. To register and for more information, readers may visit https://secarec.org/dash -splash-5k-and-fun-run/ or contact SECA at 717-806-0123 or seca@epix.net.

GOTR Season Announced Girls on the Run (GOTR) is accepting registrations for the upcoming GOTR and Heart and Sole season, which will begin on Monday, Sept. 21. At GOTR, social-emotional learning is the cornerstone of the award-winning, research-based lessons for girls in third through eighth grades. GOTR supports girls in identifying and processing their emotions. The GOTR programming seeks to empower girls to nurture their physical and emotional health, find strength in their connectedness, and build confidence and resiliency. Following current COVID-19 guidelines, GOTR-trained coaches and dedicated staff are ready to adapt program delivery as the school year approaches. GOTR has made several modifications to the program to ensure the health and safety of coaches and participants. In the event of unexpected or planned closures, GOTR will shift in-person programming to virtual practices. Coaches will be provided with specific resources, training, and support to prepare them to seamlessly deliver the program virtually. The virtual program will engage and connect socially and emotionally and will provide physical activity as well. As guidelines allow, GOTR will also plan to meet safely in small groups as it connects at alternate sites such as parks, community centers, churches, and schools. Additional modifications that have been made to the GOTR and Heart and Sole program delivery include reduced team size for safer gathering; reduced duration from 10 weeks to eight weeks to accommodate a later start date; flexibility in times and days of practices; a flexible season start date; and modifications to adhere to social distance guidelines and minimize exposure. Each girl will receive her own bag to hold her individual materials for the season. GOTR coaches will receive updated training and additional modules that include social inclusion, COVID-19 safety, and trauma informed coaching. The season culminating 5K will take place mid-November through smaller site-based events and virtually. For more information and to register, readers may visit www.gotrlancaster.org.
