Drawing On Success For Fair Book Cover By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Winston Churchill, twice prime minister of the United Kingdom the first time during World War II - had a deep affection for horses. He played polo, owned racehorses, and established a breeding program. “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man,” Churchill is credited as saying. That belief is a significant part of the philosophy behind equine-assisted therapy. Working with horses, whether grooming or riding, can have a positive impact on individuals’ mental and physical health, which is why disabled military veteran Sara
John Beachel offers natural horsemanship training for rescued horses, military veterans, and disabled individuals at Woerth It Hollow in Kirkwood. Hodgkiss, established a horse rescue on her family’s farm, Woerth It Hollow, See Woerth It Hollow pg 5
The Solanco Fair premium book was created before the beloved fair was canceled. Gracing the cover is artwork created by Ella Trimble, daughter of Peter and Laura Trimble. Now an eighth-grade student at Smith Middle School, Ella was a member of the afterschool art club this spring, when the annual cover art contest took place. When schools closed due to the coronavirus, students received an email from their art teacher asking them to submit drawings for the cover contest. Ella began work on the project the same day. Her drawing shows a tractor on a path with a pig and a cow on either side, along with the words “71st Annual Solanco Fair 2020.” Ella was surprised when she was told she was the winner. “I never entered anything like this before,” she said. “She has been very creative and See Fair Book Cover pg 5

A Way To Honor Your Grandparents
In a year when organizations are scaling back events, the mission committee of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road (Route 372), Quarryville, has expanded its annual yard sale. The event was postponed from its original date in April. “We’re having it on two days instead of one to spread it out a little bit,” explained mission committee member and yard sale coordinator Dan Henry, expressing the hope that the extended time will allow shoppers to maintain social distancing within the building. The yard sale will be held on Friday, Aug. 28, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. An array of household items, toys, tools, clothes, furniture, and more is slated to be available for purchase from the mission committee inside the church, and additional vendors will sell items outside the building. “Come and join the fun at our yard sale. Who knows? You just might find that treasure you have been looking for,” said mission committee chair Boni Henry, who is married to Dan. “We may have more stuff than ever,” Dan added. of items from an estate downsizing has been donated to the yard sale, with its contents including furniture, household goods, and tools and other flotsam traditionally found in a garage. Additionally, the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Women typically have a clothing giveaway in August, but the event was canceled this year. The women had amassed a collection of clothing, however, so they gave it to the mission committee to sell. “We’ll sell it for a dollar a bag to help people who are going back to school, Dan said. “It’s not quite a giveaway, but almost. The wearing of masks is recommended, and social distancing will be observed. As a precaution, refreshments will not be sold. The fellowship hall is air-conditioned. The proceeds from the yard sale will complement MOPC’s support of a church and school in Tamshiyacu, Peru. MOPC members have traveled to Tamshiyacu with Dan’s brother, the Rev. Dave Henry, and others from Dave’s church in Missouri at least once a year for almost a decade. This summer’s trip was canceled, but Dave hopes to visit in January 2021. He tries to visit Tamshiyacu twice a year, taking anti-parasite medication with him for the children in the village at local doctors’ request. “We are so disappointed we could not visit our friends in the Amazon this summer, and we
especially miss the children and hosting Bible school in our sister church village of Tamshiyacu, Boni commented. “We plan to continue to support the folks there and share the love of Jesus and His life-saving message with them. Although the mission committee could not travel to Peru this year, it has continued to strive to meet needs there. Boni explained that because of COVID-19, the need for assistance is greater than ever, and the committee has expanded its support beyond Tamshiyacu. “We have supplied a lot of medicine and personal protective equipment to help fight the coronavirus in the city of Iquitos, she said. Iquitos is the city the mission team flies into before taking a boat several hours up the Amazon to Tamshiyacu, Dan explained. The head nurse at an Iquitos hospital is also employed by Medical Missions, which MOPC has partnered with in Tamshiyacu. The mission committee has sent funds to the nurse to buy supplies for the hospital and hopes to send more. A small fee will be charged for outdoor space rental at the yard sale, with proceeds also going to the mission committee. Vendors must supply their own tables. To reserve spaces or learn more about the yard sale, readers may call MOPC at 717-786-3402.

The scholarships are awarded annually to students who will pursue a career in business through postsecondary education or by starting their own business. The Solanco scholarship recipients are Caroline Arrowsmith and Nathanael Nuehauser of Solanco, Ethan Cramer of Lampeter-Strasburg, and Jordan Stum of Penn Manor. Caroline will attend Penn State University at University Park to major in animal science. Nathanael will attend the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics. Ethan will major in mechanical engineering technology at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. Jordan has been accepted at several colleges and universities and will pursue a bachelor’s and master’s degree in clinical mental

The SLCCC obtains funding for its scholarships through its annual shredding event held the first Friday in June. The 2020 shredding event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the event will be held again in 2021. Local businesses, organizations and residents are invited to bring their sensitive and confidential paper-based materials for shredding. All shredded material is recycled. Donations are encouraged and are used by the SLCCC to fund the annual college scholarships. For more information, readers may call Keith Kaufman at 717786-5617.

Bird-in-Hand Bank Announces Special Cash Dividend
Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, will offer two exhibits featuring outdoor-themed artwork. The “Outbound” exhibit in the Kauffman Gallery will consist of artwork created outdoors, or en plein air, or having outdoor subjects. The show features artwork by the LCAA’s Fair Weather Plein Air group, which consists of more than 16 artists who have been creating artwork outdoors throughout the spring and summer, according to LCAA president Carol Dale. Landscapes and outdoor themed paintings by Carol S. Herr will be displayed in the Steinmetz Gallery. Carol is known for her impressionistic style and will highlight her smaller works in her
Minis Plus show. Sunlight and shadow play a large part in her work, along with strong brushstrokes and vivid colors. Herr’s work has won numerous awards in local and national art shows. She is a longtime member of LCAA and has held the position of gallery director since 2005. Both shows will open on Sunday, Aug. 30, from 1 to 4 p.m. and continue through Sunday, Sept. 20. gaining an understanding of how horses think. “I’ve taken the word ‘make’ out of my vocabulary. I create a situation in which the horses want to do what I need them to do,” Beachel said. The goal is to give the horses enough skills to be utilized so they can be adopted into good homes, while at the same time helping veterans join society and have a chance at a better life, Beachel said, adding, “It’s kind of a one-hand-washes-the-other deal.” Individuals may bring their own horses or work with rescued equines, and they may join the program at any time. Hodgkiss noted that she hopes that the current group of participants will be able to mentor newcomers as time goes on. “The goal is to help them and allow them to help others,” she said. “It gives them personal confidence that they can do this,” Beachel said. “It’s an experience that we hope will set them on a path to bettering their horsemanship and themselves.” There is no cost for military veterans or disabled individuals to participate in the program. The farm is continually undergoing work to make it wheelchair accessible, and Hodgkiss said she is looking for community support in installing access ramps. Individuals who use mobility aids and assistive devices are encouraged to participate. “We will make it work,” Hodgkiss promised. “We have enough volunteers that nobody needs to be turned away ever.” Anyone who would like to contribute to Woerth It Hollow or learn more about the nonprofit organization may visit w w w. w o e r t h i t h o l l o w. n e t . Updates about the Wednesday evening program, such as schedule changes or cancellations, are posted on the Woerth It Hollow Facebook page. 269 Cooper Drive, Kirkwood. Her mission is to help other veterans and disabled people develop confidence and learn coping skills while rehabilitating and rehoming rescued horses. In June, Hodgkiss began offering a program on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. that uses natural horsemanship training sessions from John Beachel to help individuals relieve stress and experience personal growth. Beachel, who lives in Conowingo, Md., was an Army paratrooper who served in the first Gulf War (1990-91). Beachel grew up with horses and discovered that he had a knack for working with them. After leaving the Army, Beachel worked as a trainer for 20 years. He now does clinics and teaches, starts colts, and retrains problem horses. He became involved with Woerth It Hollow because he wants others to experience the benefits of interacting with horses. “They’re coming to help me with the horses, but they’re getting peace of mind. It fixes the human’s problem while fixing the horse’s,” Beachel commented. “The trouble that horses have with humans turns out to be some of the same things people have. From the combat veteran side, I can see that. I can address their problem without them ever knowing I’m helping that (issue).” Beachel noted that when he first left the Army, he never wanted to talk with anybody. For about 10 years, he slept only two hours at a time. “The only people who were able to get through to me were those who did it indirectly,” he said. The Wednesday evening program currently includes three clients and three horses, but there is room for up to 25 people and equines. They have been focusing on groundwork, which includes grooming and guiding horses through their paces while the human is beside them, not mounted on top of them, and

artistic most of her life,” Laura commented. In addition to enjoying art, Ella likes math, and she plays flute in the marching band. She is a member of Smith’s softball team and is part of the youth group at Providence Church. Ella thinks she might like to pursue a career as an interior designer or set designer. “I really like creating art and relaxing by drawing,” Ella said, adding that she particularly likes painting with acrylics and focusing on nature themes. The Trimble family, which includes Ella’s older brother, Jacob, has a long connection with the Solanco Fair. Paul Trimble, Ella’s grandfather, joined the dairy committee in 1965 and became a board member in 1971. He has served on the fair board
ever since, including a stint as president in the 1980s. In honor of Paul’s decades of service to the fair, he was selected as the grand marshal of the 2018 Solanco Fair parade. Ella’s favorite part of the fair is the parade. She participated in the parade as a member of the school marching band in fifth and seventh grades. Winning the cover design contest is not the first time Ella’s art has received accolades at the Solanco Fair. Last year, Ella entered several photographs in the fair. “I got two firsts and a second. An art piece I entered got a second,” Ella said. She is raising a pig to enter in the livestock show this year. “When my dad was younger, he used to raise pigs for the fair,” she explained.

Fire Company Receives Donation Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community (QPRC) recently made a $10,000 donation to the Quarryville Fire Company for the purchase of new rescue tools to be used for vehicle, industrial, and farm rescues. The tools can also be used in other situations. The tools will replace an old set that was purchased in the mid-1980s. The old tools were operated by a gaspowered unit which limited their use to certain circumstances, according to Quarryville Fire Company chief Jeremy Welk. The new tools are battery-operated and can be used in a wider range of situations. To learn more about QPRC, readers may visit www.quarryville.com.

Mental Health Help Available Several organizations have partnered with Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to offer four solutions for unmet mental health needs. Some programs are only available for a limited time, so residents are encouraged to contact agencies right away. Community Mental Health Assistance Program (CMAP) is a service for essential workers in Lancaster County. If someone is struggling emotionally during this pandemic, having challenges at work, or facing difficulties with their family life, then the MHALC program can provide individuals with three no-cost telemedicine visits with a mental health professional. An essential worker is defined by CMAP as any working resident or resident whose work status was affected by COVID-19 in Lancaster County. This program is made possible through grant funding from The Steinman Foundation through the end of 2020. For more information, readers may visit https:// mhalancaster.org/our -programs/cmap-essential -workers/. The Medication Assistance Program offers financial assistance for those Lancaster County residents who are unable to afford medication during the COVID-19 pandemic. Assistance is available for both adults and children. Individuals are encouraged to communicate the type of medication, even if they are uncertain about their eligibility. Requests for assistance can be made by contacting 717-397-7461 or mha@mhalancaster.org. Limited restrictions apply. Readers may learn more at www.mhalancaster .org/medication-assistance -program/. This program is made possible through grant funding from Lancaster Cares. As part of this bundle from MHALC, individuals can be referred to the Mental Health CoPay Assistance Program at LOHF. This program offers help meeting copay costs for appointments with therapists and other mental health care professionals. Thanks to a Lancaster Cares grant, LOHF has expanded eligibility to include any Lancaster County resident who is financially impacted by COVID-19, regardless of age or dependents. The program is only for appointments with licensed mental health care providers and reduces the cost to just $10 per visit. It does not cover medications or medical appointments. For more information, readers may visit www.lohf.org. MHALC has many peer-led groups that are meeting weekly to provide support, education, and mentoring. The groups include depression (men/women), bipolar disorder, anxiety, OCD, panic, women’s depression and postpartum support. The groups are free, confidential, and ongoing. Attendees may join the meetings by phone or by Zoom for video and audio connection. Readers may contact MHALC at the aforementioned phone number or email address, or they may visit https://mhalancaster.org/need -help/support-groups/ to learn more about the support groups offered.

CommunityAid Offers Bargains And Treasures By Francine Fulton
Back-to-school shoppers, treasure seekers, and bargain hunters are invited to visit CommunityAid, one of Lancaster County’s largest thrift stores, located at 31 Rohrerstown Road, Lancaster. The 34,000-square-foot store, formerly a Weis Markets, features new and gently used clothing for men, women, and children; toys and games; housewares and knick-knacks; seasonal items; books, DVDs, and CDs;

lamps, lighting fixtures, and small appliances; shoes and accessories for the whole family; jewelry; and collectibles. The store is open on Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and closed on Sundays. All proceeds benefit local charities. “Our mission is to fund local churches, charities, and first responders; to provide affordable or free clothing to families in need; and to provide quality, good-paying jobs in the community,” said Bob Hauer, marketing
director. Those who visit the Lancaster store will find neat rows of clothing sorted by size and gender as well as color. All clothing has been donated by the community. “When our processing team goes through and selects the clothing that goes out (on the sales floor), we try to keep a high standard,” said Hauer. “These are items that people want to buy. We hang them in a way that presents them attractively, but we are really quality-driven overall. It is

good-quality stuff.” Repeat visits are encouraged, since new items are put on display daily. “We put out on average 3,500 new-view items on our sales floor every single day. People come in looking for a great deal and they find it,” said Hauer. “Our tasks are to replace that item on the rack. It’s a wonderful challenge. It does no good for our charities or our shoppers if it stays back in the processing room. It has to get out there.” Every effort is made to keep the store clean and well-organized. “‘Thrift’ has different connotations. Some people hear the word ‘thrift’ and think of a small, musty, dingy presentation,” Hauer pointed out. “Our hallmark is that we want to be clean and bright and we want to smell good. When you come into our store, you shop and don’t realize it’s a thrift store until you look at the receipt when you check out.” CommunityAid - Lancaster is only one of the organization’s thrift store locations. Other
stores are in Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg, Hanover, York, and Selinsgrove. “We have given away $15.3 million to 700-plus churches, charities, and first responders since 2009,” Hauer reported. “We have the largest thrift store on the East Coast in Selinsgrove, a former department store, which is about 56,000 square feet of retail. You can spend about three hours shopping. That store is massive.” The organization offers both full- and part-time employment for local workers at a competitive wage. “We want to make sure that this should be an employment experience that they always deserved,” Hauer said. “Many of our team members have come from a minimum wage environment. We value them, despite whatever experience they have had in the past.” For more information about CommunityAid - Lancaster, readers may call 717-412-7706 or search for “CommunityAid - Lancaster” on Facebook. Lancaster Awarded NEA Grant The City of Lancaster was awarded a $50,000 grant in July by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for the Office of Public Art’s Public Art Community Engagement (PACE) program. The grant was awarded to fund the new PACE manager position in the Office of Public Art, which will run the PACE Neighbors program. The PACE manager will also support the Office of Neighborhood Engagement through resident-driven public art projects. The position was posted on Feb. 14 and applications closed on March 13, but the selection process was delayed due to COVID-19. The Office of Public Art was one of 855 organizations nationwide to receive a grant from the NEA. The grants were made possible through CARES Act funding to support previous NEA award recipients with staff salaries, fees for artists or contractual personnel, and facilities costs. This award marks the third grant that the City of Lancaster has received from the NEA in the last year. To learn more, readers may visit www.cityoflancasterpa.com.

TechCelerator Sessions Slated Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Central and Northern PA will offer “TechCelerator Fall 2020 = Explore Your Start-Up Tech Business Idea!” The virtual twohour group and one-hour individual sessions will run from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays from Sept. 15 through Nov. 17. Participants will expand their network; engage with serial entrepreneurs; participate in discussions with experts in marketing, sales and finance to help shape their business; and develop a pitch presentation. The program will consist of a weekly two-hour group session with content experts and a weekly one-hour session with one’s start-up business mentor to discuss individual needs and development opportunities. The goal of the 10-week program is to provide a framework that will enable particpants to have the information needed to determine the right time to start a tech business. Participants’ work will culminate in a 6-minute presentation that will position their business to take the first step toward funding. They will test their presentation skills at the final session, pitching before a group of judges who will offer a $10,000 award to one or more participants. Ben Franklin Technology Partners invites students, professors, and the general public to apply. Space is limited. The registration deadline is Sunday, Sept. 6. To apply, readers may visit https://bit.ly /techcelerator2020fall.
