The Heart Walk is part of the American Heart Association’s Healthy For Good movement to encourage sustainable healthy lifestyle changes. Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health has served as a presenting sponsor of the movement since 2013. In addition to supporting the Heart Walk, LG Health has supported the planting of American Heart Association Teaching Gardens at five Lancaster elementary schools, the establishment of a labeled walking path around Buchanan Park, the installation of three bicycle repair stations in the city of Lancaster and one along WERT trail in Warwick Township and the installation of a bicycle rack at King Elementary. This year, LG Health and the American Heart Association
will collaborate on the installation of a drinking water filtration station at Lampeter-Strasburg High School to provide students with access to clean drinking water as an alternative to sugary beverages. The Lancaster Heart Walk is chaired by Bernadette Taylor, senior executive vice president and chief human resources officer for Fulton Financial Corporation. The Lancaster Heart Walk is presented by LG Health and Fulton Bank, with additional support from the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, UPMC Pinnacle and WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. Organizers have set a goal to raise $325,000 from the Heart Walk to support the American Heart Association. Walkers who raise a minimum of $100 will receive a Heart Walk T-shirt and the opportunity to earn
additional prizes. Dollars raised will support the American Heart Association’s lifesaving mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives through investments in heart disease and stroke research, health care quality improvement, advocacy, prevention and education. Foundation president Barry Girvin noted that he is especially looking forward to Zahm’s presentation about the Jacobite risings, during which Zahm will tell stories and sing songs. The festival is a celebration of the Scottish birthright of the Covenanters who settled in southern Lancaster and Chester counties. “We have a lot of good heritage events (during the festival),” said foundation treasurer Donna McCool. “We’ve got the haggis ceremony, fiddling demonstrations, and sheep herding. American food will be available for purchase as well. Fiber artists are slated to demonstrate spinning and weaving, and Irish dances will be demonstrated as well. The festival will be held rain or shine. McCool noted that weather has impacted attendance in previous years, but the event continues to grow. “(Last year) was the first year for the dancers, so a lot of parents came, and people came to see the dancers,” McCool said. “I think the Highland Games are really interesting and impressive. Of course, it’s not a festival without bagpipes. The bagpipe competition and the bands are amazing.” An admission cost has been set for adults and teenagers. Children age 12 and under will be

O-ho, the Wells Fargo wagon is a-comin’ down the street, and it is bringing Servant Stage Company’s biggest show of the year with it. The Broadway classic “The Music Man” features an ode to the much-anticipated delivery vehicle, along with noted songs such as “76 Trombones,” “Ya Got Trouble,” “’Til There Was You,” and “Goodnight, My Someone.” Servant Stage is a nonprofit theater that has served Lancaster County since 2011, striving to bring exceptional entertainment to more than 50,000 audience members each year. The organization’s production of “The Music Man” will be presented at Lancaster Mennonite High School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on select dates from Friday, Sept. 6, to Sunday, Sept. 22. The cast will feature more than 60 local performers and a full professional orchestra, as well as a familiar face in the role of Professor Harold Hill. The beloved musical has been a favorite of Servant Stage executive director Johnathan Bauer’s since he was a child, and he is thrilled to make a return to the stage with this iconic role. “It’s the first show I ever saw and really was the spark that ignited my love for musicals,” Bauer remarked. “It’s the perfect American musical, with such fun

Royer’s Holds Food Drive Royer’s Flowers & Gifts’ annual food drive collected 1,381 pounds of nonperishable items for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and Helping Harvest, formerly Greater Berks Food Bank. The Royer’s
Stems Hunger event, which took place from June 22 to July 6, has collected more than eight tons of food since it began in 2011. Donors received a free carnation for each food item they contributed, up to six per visit. Besides Royer’s 16 stores, eight Drayer Physical Therapy Institute locations in the area served as drop-off locations. Lebanon-based Royer’s operates 15 Royer’s stores in Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. Sister company Stephenson’s Flowers & Gifts has one Harrisburg store. For more information, readers may visit www.royers.com.

Four baking contests will return to the Solanco Fair in 2019: apple pie, angel food cake, chocolate cake and the youth-only cookies, brownies and bars competition. All are open to Pennsylvania residents. The Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest requires at least 60% of the pie filling to be apples. It is sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF). PA’s Incredible Angel Food Cake Contest is co-sponsored by Pennsylvania’s Egg Farmers and the PSACF. Pennsylvania-produced and packed eggs are requested to be used if possible. Participants are asked to look for PEQAP or PA Preferred logos or Pennsylvania packaging dates on the carton. The Homemade Chocolate Cake Contest is sponsored by the PSACF. The entry must be a layered chocolate cake and must be frosted. Both the cake and the icing are to be made from scratch, and the cake must feature chocolate or cocoa as the main ingredient. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s PA Preferred program sponsors the Cookies, Brownies and Bars Contest. The goal of this junior baking contest is to encourage young people across the state to participate in Pennsylvania’s agricultural fairs by showcasing locally grown and produced products in their contest entries. All participants must be between the ages of 8 and 18. Each entry must include two PA Preferred ingredients. A comprehensive list of PA Preferred brands and products is available at www.papreferred.com. The PA Preferred ingredients must be clearly labeled on the recipe, but the packaging labels do not need to be included. All baking contests require that recipes - listing all ingredients, quantities, and the preparation instructions - be submitted

Food Bank Receives Grant The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has received a $5,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to help fight hunger in the Food Bank’s 27-county service area through Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) application assistance. With this grant, the food bank will scale access to SNAP among eligible households, with particular emphasis on reaching seniors. SNAP is a federal nutrition program dedicated to helping millions of people who face hunger. According to the food bank, SNAP improves food security, offers benefits that enable families to purchase healthier foods, and frees up household resources that can be used for preventative services and needed medical care. The food bank says that more than 15 percent of Americans eligible for SNAP currently do not receive this benefit, and seniors are disproportionately affected by food insecurity and barriers to SNAP access. Among seniors, 58% of eligible individuals are not enrolled in SNAP. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s team of SNAP experts provides assistance and helps individuals determine their eligibility for SNAP benefits. Team members are available to assist in the application process through the bilingual Food Stamps Helpline at 877-999-5964. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s programs that reach more than 136,000 individuals each month include ElderShare, MilitaryShare, Fresh Express, BackPack, Kids Café, Summer Pantries and Summer Feeding. Last year, the food bank provided nearly 45 million meals and distributed more than 11 million pounds of produce from its locations in Harrisburg and Williamsport. Walmart and the Walmart Foundation provide donations of both food and funds to the Feeding America nationwide network of 200 food banks. For more information about the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, readers may visit www.cen tralpafoodbank.org or call 717-564-1700.
