Capital Campaign Will Fund SECA Pool Project The Southern End Community Association (SECA) announced its plans to significantly renovate and expand the SECA pool, modernize and improve the bathhouses, and establish a new Youth Scholarship Fund by kicking off a capital campaign, dubbed “Jump Into Local Recreation,” on Aug. 12. The special event was held at the pool, 299 Park Ave., Quarryville, for donors, volunteers, pool members, and local business and community leaders. During the event, capital campaign co-chair Rick Rankin shared some of the important moments in the history of the pool. The Quarryville Pool opened in 1949 and was owned and operated by American Legion Post 603 for 44 years. SECA bought the pool in 1993 and subsequently rebuilt and reopened it in 1994. On an annual basis, the pool has more than 10,000 visits from children, adults, and families. In addition to

general recreation, popular pool activities include swimming lessons, lifeguard training, and water aerobics, and the SECA Sharks swim team is based out of the pool as well. SECA remains committed to offering this important community amenity, particularly given the limited, convenient options for certain types of recreation in the Southern End. The SECA pool is also an important employment center as it offers employment to about 27 teenagers and young adults each summer. “The SECA pool is one of the few true community pools in our area,” said longtime SECA board member and capital campaign co-chair Kim Risk. “It is open to the public for either a reasonable membership fee or by paying a daily pass rate. There is no requirement to purchase a bond or pay an initiation fee, nor is membership a requirement for swim lessons. SECA has a long See Capital Campaign pg 16

Race Will Aid Bloodhound Team By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Strasburg residents Al and Patti Means have been working with bloodhounds since 1988, when they picked up their first mantrailing hound. “That 40-pound dog had two people to train,” Al recalled. “There was no one around here who was doing search and rescue. He taught us a lot.” Al and Patti launched Red Rose K-9 Search and Rescue in 1989 and have provided their services free of charge to the community for 30 years. Along the way, they have trained and worked with a total of 12 dogs; the current and final two are Chip, age 3, and See K-9s And Kayaks pg 7

The Muddy Run Canoe and Kayak Race will be held on Sept. 22 to support Red Rose K-9 Search and Rescue. Inviting the public to participate are (from left) Al Means with Chip, Phyllis and John Koenig with Heather, and Patti Means with Reuben.

Deep Relaxation & Improved Well-Being

Weavers, spinners, painters, glass blowers, woodworkers, photographers, clothing designers, sculptors, potters, quilters, and makers of jewelry, candles, brooms, baskets, cards, iron, and leather crafts are just some of the artisans and craftspersons who will share their talents at the 31st annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show. This year’s event is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 1 and 2, at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. For Marilyn Hobday, founder and chairperson of the Heart of Lancaster Art and Craft Show, ensuring that each of the artists makes his or her own work is crucial. Each applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. Many of the 200 exhibitors are from the local area, with others traveling from all along the East Coast. Forty-five of the juried artists are brand new to the 2018 show. Fifty artists will be demonstrating how their items are made, such as newcomer Topaz Martofel, who uses balloons to create entire unique structures and rooms. Basket weaver Joan Betzold and photographer Keith Grebinger have been selected as this year’s featured artists and will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the show’s information booth in aisle one. Betzold hails from Bel Air, Md., and has been a basket weaver and weaving teacher for more than 25 years. She creates designs, dyes the fibers, and weaves original baskets using ancient techniques without using nails, glue, or staples and is well known for incorporating unusual items into her baskets. Grebinger, who was born and raised in Lancaster, fell in love with the art of photography while attending Manheim Township High School and has more

than 35 years of experience in the field, including shooting in 47 states and eight countries. His love of nature is reflected in his landscape photography. Another important factor in planning the show for Hobday is having artwork at a variety of price points available for patrons many of whom have been attending since the show first began. In addition to perusing quality arts and crafts, attendees may purchase a variety of food and enjoy live music by Over Easy, a Lancaster-area trio specializing in light pop favorites. At the information booth, folks may enter to win drawings for gift cards. Winners will be announced every hour. “I love the show. It’s like a new show for me every year when I go,” remarked Hobday. “This is our 31st anniversary, and that’s just unbelievable to me.” Hobday and other organizers are also celebrating the fact that Heart of Lancaster has once again been named one of the Top 200 Best Shows in the Country by a magazine for crafters. “We’ve had really good attendance and quality vendors. They have a thousand other shows they could go to, but they choose us,” Hobday reflected. “It’s all about the community. It’s free, and we love that everybody can come and enjoy it.” Each year, a local charity is chosen to receive donations from the event. A donation box will be set up for those interested in donating toward this year’s nonprofit organization, the Columbia Animal Shelter. The shelter was the dream of the late Judy McKonly, who passed away in 2017. Her family has set out to fulfill that dream and McKonly’s wish to save the lives of atrisk animals. UPMC Pinnacle Receives Grant

www.goodsstores.com

R017785

UPMC Pinnacle was one of three state organizations named to receive a PAC-MAT grant to help battle the state’s opioid addiction crisis. With PAC-MAT funding, UPMC Pinnacle will strengthen its current medical-assisted treatment (MAT) and case management services to patients within the health system’s outpatient sites in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties. UPMC Pinnacle Center for Addiction Recovery, 2501 N. Third St., Harrisburg, will serve as the hub and bring together primary, secondary, and tertiary care providers, as well as community and hospital administration members, to build on an addiction treatment program that increases access to care, reduces health care costs, and improves quality. This will include increasing drug and alcohol screenings within the broader network of providers, creating a Care Map for patients to research care patterns, establishing a community network of case management support, and broadening the use of MAT throughout the region by breaking down stigmas and barriers to care. In the PAC-MAT model of treatment, an addiction specialist physician is at the center of the hub, providing expert guidance and support to primary care physicians in rural and underserved areas of the state. Serving as the spokes, primary care physicians provide direct patient care, including the medication-assisted treatment prescription. Patients also are connected to drug and alcohol counseling in their communities. These grants are funded through the second 21st Century CURES grant, a $26.5 million federal grant the state received to combat the heroin and opioid epidemic by increasing access to treatment, reducing unmet treatment need, and reducing opioid overdoserelated deaths through the provision of prevention, treatment, and recovery activities for substance-use disorder. The UPMC Pinnacle Center for Addiction Recovery is a comprehensive addiction clinic. The center connects individuals facing an opioid use disorder to treatment through the use of medication assisted treatment. For more information, readers may visit www.upmcpinnacle.com.

from 1.25 miles to 5.5 miles have been established. More than 60 classes are available to accommodate racers of all skill levels and types of watercraft. Phyllis noted that a few classes have been added to the recreation category to reflect changes in kayak and canoe components and design. Awards for the top three finishers in each class will be distributed after the race, and drawings for door prizes will be held as well. Additionally, a kayak tug-of-war will take place just for fun while the times are being tabulated. Between 80 and 100 children and adults participate each year, and even more folks attend as spectators. A number of people are regular attendees. “It’s such a cool group of people, Patti remarked. “It just always has a good feel about it, she said of the event. The lake tends to be calm, and there is minimal current. Participants may focus on their form or the scenery as they paddle, rather than worrying about obstacles or rapids. “We made it so the average person can go out and have a good time, John explained. “I try to make it enjoyable. There is a cost to enter the race, and registrations received by Friday, Sept. 14, will be guaranteed an event T-shirt. Registrations will be accepted by postal service through Wednesday, Sept. 19; after that date, folks must wait to register at the event. To register or for more information about the race, readers may contact John at 717-872-2805 or johnnymuzz @verizon.net, visit www.keschneider11 .wix.com/muddyrunrace, or find “Muddy Run Canoe and Kayak Race on Facebook. Reuben, age 4. Although Al and Patti are anticipating retiring, probably within a decade, they are still going strong, and Patti routinely walks at least 2 miles every morning in order to be physically prepared to track a person through any kind of terrain. “(On a case), it’s different, Patti remarked. “There’s a dog pulling you on. The adrenaline kicks in and carries you. The teams - Patti works with Reuben, and Al is paired with Chip - have looked for lost children and alleged criminals in all kinds of weather. Al noted that the dogs have trained in temperatures as low as 3 degrees. “At those temps, we have to be careful their ears don’t freeze because they drag on the ground, he said. As a nonprofit organization, Red Rose K-9 Search and Rescue accepts donations from individuals, businesses, and other organizations. For nearly a decade, the team has been the recipient of funds raised by Millersville residents John and Phyllis Koenig through the Muddy Run Canoe and Kayak Race. The Meanses typically use the race proceeds for training seminars hosted primarily by law enforcement groups that use bloodhounds every day. “Bloodhounds are highly active and intelligent dogs, John related. “(Their) scent tracking is so good that the testimony of a bloodhound’s man-trailing results is accepted in almost any court. This year’s Muddy Run Canoe and Kayak Race will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, on the lake at Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road W., Holtwood. Registration will open at 8:30 a.m., the race meeting that is mandatory for all entrants to attend will be held at 10:30 a.m., and the race will begin at 10:45 a.m. Three courses of distances ranging

Scottish Festival from pg 1 Festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, located 4 miles east of Quarryville on Route 372. The athletic events will begin at 8 a.m. The Washington Memorial Pipe Band, Charlie Zahm and Tad Marks, Fire in the Glen, and harpist Kendrah Tozzo will perform throughout the day, and bagpipers will skirl their best for a panel of judges. There will also be a Highland dance competition, and the Penn’s Wall Highland Games will test athletes’ abilities to move cumbersome objects great distances. Scottish clans and organizations will be represented, and vendors will sell Scottish goods, food, and locally made ice cream. A variety of demonstrations have been planned; these may include spinning and weaving, Irish dancing, a haggis ceremony, and more. One of the confirmed demonstrations will be that of sheep herding. Rebecca Bellaman of Bainbridge will bring her Border collies Czechers and Ena to show how they move sheep through and around obstacles in a calm and controlled fashion. Bellaman has been working with collies since 1999 and obtained her first working dog in 2013. She competes regularly with two of her three dogs. Czechers is 5 and has moved up to open-level trialing, while 1.5-year-old Ena is just making her debut into the sport. According to the United States Border Collie Handlers’ Association (USBCHA), sanctioned stockdog trials are modeled directly after trials in Great Britain, where both the event and the breed originated. The object of a trial is to test the ability of a dog to manage sheep or goats in circumstances they may encounter in everyday work. The dogs may be asked to gather, drive, shed, single, or pen an individual or group of sheep. Handlers are expected to give their dogs few commands and to work their dogs quietly. Bellaman and several of her friends will run a mock competition so that spectators may experience an arena sheepdog trial. They will also give a basic demonstration on the training of the collies. “Coming from an Irish family, I have always been into the Celtic and old-fashioned lifestyle, and working these dogs just gives me a bond with the animals you can only imagine,” Bellaman remarked. A schedule of the day’s events is posted at www.oldcovchurch.com/scottish -festival-2018. Folks may purchase discounted tickets through the site, or they may buy full-price tickets at the festival. Children age 12 and under will be admitted free of charge. Parking will be free of charge and located at the church. Handicappedaccessible parking will be available. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating, and wearing sunscreen is advised, as shade may be limited. There are still opportunities for vendors, competitors, and volunteers. Anyone wishing to participate may find the appropriate application on the event website. For more information about the Covenanter Scottish Festival, readers may email oldcovchurch@gmail.com or find the event on Facebook.

LABOR DAY

Capital Campaign from pg 1 tradition of welcoming all.” Because the current pool is at the end of its useful life, the capital campaign is targeted to generate the amount needed to renovate and expand the pool. When successful, the $650,000 campaign will add a 25-square-foot toddler area, new interactive water features, a second diving board, and significant improvements to the surface area and mechanical systems, all resulting in a pool that is safe, efficient, and easier to maintain. In addition, the campaign will provide funds to modernize and improve the two bathhouses, add a new toddler play area inside the pool fence, offer additional paved parking, and upgrade the sand volleyball courts. A new Youth Scholarship Fund will allow more families to participate in SECA programs and events when financial hardships would otherwise prevent participation. Rankin, who was part of SECA’s original board of directors and has remained involved over the years, expressed his excitement for the improvements. “We tend to do things a little differently in the Solanco area. We have great community pride and believe that the SECA pool is an important asset,” he said. “I am thrilled so many have already stepped up to make leadership gifts to ensure the next generation of kids and families has the opportunity to learn to swim, build confidence in the water, enjoy health benefits of swimming, and spend time with friends and neighbors.” According to Risk, SECA friends and supporters have already made gifts and pledges totaling $493,000. Fundraising will continue through at least the end of 2018. Construction is expected to begin shortly after the pool closes for the 2018 season. Readers may visit www.secarec.org to learn more about the campaign and to make an online donation. Folks with questions may contact SECA at 717-806-0123 or seca@epix.net.
