Equine therapy center to open in the Southern End
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDLastfall, lifelong friends Kris Kauffman and Danielle Denlinger got together to have lunch and catch up. Both women brought each other up to speed on what was new in their lives, and they discussed their goals for the future. Kauffman shared her dream of starting a nonprofit to provide services for individuals with special needs. Denlinger told her she had a similar vision, but specifically for equine therapy. Shortly after this conversation, Kauffman discovered a farm for sale in Quarryville and asked Denlinger to partner with her to realize their shared dream.
In December 2022, Kauffman and her husband, Lee, acquired Trailside Farm, 787 Valley Road, Quarryville, and they joined forces with Denlinger to create Bridlepath Equine Center. The new facility will offer a variety of therapeutic horseback-riding
programs for individuals with disabilities. Denlinger serves as the organization’s executive director, and Bridlepath will officially open its doors for participants on Monday, Sept. 11.
Denlinger studied behavioral science at York College of Pennsylvania and has earned multiple instructor certifications through the Council for Education and Certification in Therapeutic Horsemanship. Denlinger has spent the last 10 years working for a therapy riding program in York as a way to combine her passions for both horseback-riding and working with children and adults with special needs.
Previously, the property that Bridlepath is located on was used for crop farming. Since December, Denlinger and the Kauffmans have been remodeling buildings and installing features such as a lounge for parents, a tack room and storage spaces. They also See Equine therapy pg 2

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDJunior Achievement of South Central PA (JASCPA) will host its 32nd annual Putt for Education fundraising event on Friday, Oct. 6, at the Village Greens, 1444 Village Road, Strasburg. The day will include multiple tee times, and noon and 2:30 p.m. spots are currently available to purchase for a set price. Friday, Oct. 13, has been selected as the rain date. The proceeds of the event will support various programs that JA holds throughout Lancaster County and

One of the prize holes will challenge golfers to hit a ball into the sunroof of a car for a chance to win prizes such as gift certificates for the Village Greens and local businesses. JASCPA will accept registration for sponsors until the day of the event, and teams may sign up to play until the last week of September. Registration will See JASCPA pg 4
As the end of August approaches each year, students often experience many varying emotions. While some kids become excited for autumn and the change of pace, others may be sad summer vacation is already over and feel nervous about starting school. At the start of the academic year, teachers and administrators throughout Solanco School District seek to abate the concerns of students and their parents in a few different ways. Every school in the district provides an opportunity for students

In preparation for Bridlepath’s official opening, Denlinger has been training volunteers and offering tours of the facility to incoming participants. The volunteers’ training consists of two parts: the group meets the horses and discusses the expectations of the program, and the volunteers receive hands-on training in leading, side walking, mounting and dismounting and saddling up their horses.
“There are so many benefits to equine therapy. Physically, horses move in a way that mimics how humans walk,” said Denlinger. “Riders use the same muscles as they would walking on their own feet, which helps with balance, coordination and fine motor skills.” In addition to the physical benefits of horseback-riding, horses can help individuals build confidence as a non-judgmental partner.
2023 Fall
Bridlepath Equine Center will hold an open house on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about the organization’s programs and to meet staff members and volunteers. “We’re excited to be a part of the Southern End and its surrounding communities,” Denlinger said. “I’m looking forward to serving a population who deserves nothing less.”

to visit their classrooms prior to the first day of school. At the middle school and high school levels, kids are offered a chance to tour the building with their parents to become familiar with the many classrooms and teachers. At the elementary school level, students are able to attend an open house on the Thursday before school starts. During the open house, students and their families get to see where their desks and cubbies will be, meet teachers and make connections with soon-to-be classmates.
Although each elementary school has an open house, the activities vary from school to school. At Quarryville Elementary School, incoming kindergartners are given an opportunity to ride a school bus with their families during the open house, allowing them to become comfortable with the ride before school officially starts. The Quarryville PTO also hosts a family event in the cafeteria to engage with families and serve refreshments. “The most important thing is having the whole school open and available to see,” said Rebecca Gajecki, principal of Quarryville Elementary School. “Being able to meet the teacher and see familiar faces is helpful to ease students’ minds.”
At Providence Elementary School, staff members have spent the summer trying to make the building as welcoming as possible. The front doors of the building have recently been painted to display a message: “We’re glad you’re here.”
Zac Bauermaster, principal at Providence Elementary School, said everyone from custodians to teachers has been hard at work to give new students a warm welcome.
“It’s quite a process. It’s neat to see it all come together at the open house,” Bauermaster added.
In addition to easing the minds of students and parents, the open house provides several benefits for teachers. Many teachers have already taught siblings of their new students, allowing them to build on an existing connection with the family. Older students will often visit their old classrooms to see their former teachers, which helps to establish a friendly environment for children who are stepping through the door for the first time.
For the first six weeks of school, school staff members’ main priority is creating a sense of community and mutual respect throughout the entire building. Providence Elementary School recently started “fistbump Fridays,” where students are encouraged to celebrate the end of the week by giving their classmates a fist-bump during morning announcements. “A lot of our work is establishing that sense of community,” Bauermaster said. “It’s not just students, teachers or families; it’s everyone working together with the child as a focal point.”

include a grab-and-go lunch for all golfers and a gift bag of items that have been donated by local businesses.
The funds raised by Putt for Education will benefit multiple programs JA offers to students from kindergarten to 12th grade. Each program is held at schools free of charge and falls into one of the organization’s three target areas: financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship. JASCPA’s volunteers facilitate the programs and use their own
life experiences to teach practical skills in classrooms throughout the area.
One of JASCPA’s financial literacy initiatives is REAL Life, which is a program offered to juniors and seniors in high school. Through REAL Life, students learn about budgeting by participating in various activities such as guessing the cost of items commonly purchased by adults. Students are also given scenarios that include a specific career and salary, and they

are tasked with covering expenses like rent and utilities without exceeding their budgets. “It’s really valuable for students to learn the cost of things as they prepare for adulthood,” said Kim Zech, JASCPA’s vice president of communications and events. “Our programs give kids an opportunity to ask questions and get real-world answers.”
To promote entrepreneurship and employment readiness in students, JASCPA hosts BizTown. The event involves a daylong interactive learning experience in a simulated
town, where fifth- and sixthgrade students can operate a business such as a restaurant or bank. The goal of BizTown is to bridge the gap between what students learn in the classroom and what they will be tasked with in adult life.
During the 2022-23 school year, JASCPA offered programs to over 100,000 students in southcentral Pennsylvania, including over 24,000 kids in Lancaster County.

Titan Gilroy named keynote speaker
Titan Gilroy will be this year’s featured keynote speaker at the MX2023 Manufacturers’ Expo to be held on Thursday, Nov. 9, at the York Expo Center. Gilroy is CEO and founder of TITANS of CNC. Founded in 2005, the company specializes in manufacturing parts for the medical, subsea and aerospace industries.
Gilroy began his career in manufacturing when he walked away from his professional boxing career and his rough past, including prison time, and found himself in a CNC machine shop where everything in his life changed. He shared his story on the reality series “Titan: American Built,” which was dedicated to
American manufacturing. In the third season he went to San Quentin Prison and built an Elite CNC Academy. It was because of this experience that Gilroy developed the free TITANS of CNC
Strength training for seniors
A balanced diet and exercise, which includes a combination of aerobic activities and strength training, is necessary to maintain long-term health.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity is one of the most important things older adults can do to protect their overall health. Exercise helps to delay or prevent many of the conditions that come with age. Adults age 65 and older should aim for the
recommended 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, such as brisk walking, and at least two days of activities that strengthen muscles. When it comes to muscle strengthening, seniors can follow a few safety guidelines.
- Speak with a health care provider first. Before beginning an exercise regimen, people should have a discussion with their general practitioner about their fitness goals. The doctor can recommend strategies that are safe
and point out any exercises that may compromise the patient’s overall health.
- Master basic exercises first. Anyone new to strength training, which is sometimes known as resistance training, can start out slowly, even just using body weight to provide resistance. Resistance exercises can include squats, crunches, modified pushups, planks, and lunges.
- Advance to resistance bands. When a person is ready to move on to something else, he or she may
consider resistance bands as an alternative to free weights. The bands can help a person develop good form before introducing weight. Good form is key to avoiding injury.
- Work with a trainer. Working with a certified personal trainer can help a person learn how to use free weights and strength-training machines correctly. A trainer also can create a routine that includes the right number of sets and repetitions to gradually build and
How to protect long-term cognitive health
Cognitive health is not something to take for granted. Although a certain level of memory loss can be expected as people age, when the ability to clearly think, learn, and remember is compromised, those changes can affect an individual’s ability to perform daily activities and are a cause for concern.
Brain health should be a priority for everyone. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) says brain health is an umbrella term that encompasses a host of factors, including cognitive health, which is how well a person
thinks, learns, and remembers; motor function, or how movements are made and controlled; tactile function, which is how a person feels sensations; and emotional function, or how emotions are interpreted and responded to. Individuals can safeguard brain health - particularly cognitive health - by taking the following steps.
Be more health-conscious. People should get routine screenings, manage chronic health problems, limit or avoid alcohol and nicotine products, and get the recommended amount of sleep each night.
Manage high blood pressure. All chronic conditions cause long-term repercussions, but the NIA indicates that observational studies show that having high blood pressure in mid-life increases the risk of cognitive decline later in life. Lowering blood pressure lowers the risk for mild cognitive impairment and possibly dementia.
Challenge your brain. Harvard Medical School says nurturing social connections, engaging in stimulating mental activities like reading and doing puzzles, seeing new places, and learning new
things can help keep the brain in top form.
Manage stress. Stress can take its toll on the body, and there is reason to believe that it may adversely affect cognitive health as well. Make every effort to reduce stress,

maintain muscle mass. If someone decides against hiring a trainer, gym staff members may guide them on using equipment and demonstrate proper form.
- Exercise with a friend. Strength training with a friend or family member can provide motivation and keep people on target to meet their goals.
- Build up gradually. A person’s first strength training session should only last 10 to 15 minutes, according to
Tiffany Chag, a strength coach at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. This time limit enables the person to gauge soreness. Anyone new to strength training should wait until soreness abates before beginning the next session.
Exercises that build strength are a vital part of maintaining health as a senior. These exercises help maintain muscle mass and also improve balance and bone health.

whether that involves exercising, meditating, laughing with friends and family members, taking vacations, or engaging in other relaxing activities.
Get enough vitamin D. Vitamin D is linked to a host of health benefits, including its potential to promote a healthy brain. Individuals can spend more time outdoors to get vitamin D naturally from the sun and eat foods rich in vitamin D. If doctors find that vitamin D levels are exceptionally low, supplements can help. Pay attention to hearing loss. At least one type of hearing
loss has been linked to cognitive decline, says Healthline. Researchers in Italy concluded that people with central hearing loss had a higher risk of mild cognitive impairment than those with no hearing loss or peripheral hearing loss. Individuals with central hearing loss are urged to speak to their physicians to determine if they can take preventive action to stave off further decline.
Cognitive health should be a priority, and adults can employ various strategies to reduce their risk of cognitive decline as they age.

Mentors frompg 12
at giving veterans who have committed a crime the opportunity to get their lives back on track. Those who complete the program successfully can have their record expunged, have more serious charges dropped and get a reduced sentence - possibly avoiding incarceration altogether. Program participants may have served in any branch of the U.S. military.
The rigorous program includes four phases, with requirements that participants abstain from alcohol and other drugs, find and maintain a job, participate in community service projects, attend court dates and show up for appointments with their probation officer and other court staff members.
The volunteer mentors must be veterans who are willing to take on a program participant as the participant moves through four phases. Mentoring typically involves attending weekly court sessions; keeping in touch with the mentee by text, phone or personal contact; and serving as a supportive presence.
The Veterans Court is one of three treatment courts that have been established in the Lancaster County court system to give a second chance to offenders who have struggled with the use of alcohol and other drugs or who are struggling with an untreated mental illness. The Veterans Court is administrated by Judge Jeffery D. Wright, and the mentors’ involvement gives another layer of support to the participants who commit to the program.
Many of the veteran mentors who are involved are retired or have flexible schedules that permit them to attend weekly court dates and other activities. Volunteers who are people of color or women are especially wanted.
To learn more about volunteer opportunities, contact Rich Wilson at 717-466-0978 or look for the table sponsored by the Lancaster County Veterans Treatment Court at the upcoming Recovery Day Lancaster on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Buchanan Park, Buchanan and Race avenues, Lancaster.
