Encounter Church Plans Seventh Car Show BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

Encounter Church, 300 Hideaway Drive, Quarryville, has held an annual World of Wheels car show for six years. 2020 will be no exception. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 3 to 7 p.m. The rain date will be Sunday, Sept. 20, from 3 to 7 p.m. Organizers are expecting a higher turnout than usual and have been

planning accordingly. “I’m mildly terrified that, with so many car shows canceled, we’ll wind up with 500 cars,” pastor Stuart Osborne commented. “We’ll just have to pray for very good weather (so we can park on the lawn).” The show usually attracts classic vehicles, but everything interesting is welcome, as the motto is “if you want to drive it or push it, you can bring it.” Osborne noted that one See Car Show pg 6

The Solanco High School marching band rehearsed its new show, “2020 - The Best of Times.” Weyman noted that marching band shows have a standard fourstep interval, which is just over 6 feet, between individuals, so social distancing is inherent to that standard. This spring, anticipating that the school closure and the restrictions that followed would eliminate crucial rehearsal time, Weyman reprogrammed the show, swapping out the originally scheduled music for arrangements of “Don’t You Worry ’Bout a Thing” by Stevie Wonder, “The Best of Times” by Styx, and “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay. Typically, June and July are spent working on playing technique and ensemble music, while the twoweek camp in August focuses on learning the drill, staging, and visual portions of the program. This year, the band met only in August. “Because I always strive to maintain a high degree of challenge for the kids via programming - which we have certainly done with ‘The Best of Times’ program - I felt it prudent to rethink the show to maximize what would remain of our summer preparatory rehearsal time,” Weyman said.

The seventh annual World of Wheels car show hosted by Encounter Church will feature a wide assortment of vehicles.

A Letter From The Publisher It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing

This year has contained uncertainty and disappointment, but Solanco High School director of bands Scott Weyman has adopted an optimistic perspective. “2020 The Best of Times” is the marching band’s production number this fall. “The concept of the show is that we, as a band, get to experience ‘the best of times’ when we have the chance to gather and perform together,” Weyman explained. “Our goal is for our performance to provide ‘the best of times’ for our audience as well.” This year’s band includes 75 student musicians and color guard members, a little larger than last year’s band. “(It) continues our trend of growing by a few students per year,” Weyman said. “This is despite having several students who opted out for the 2020 marching season due to COVID-19-related concerns.” Sean Keller is the senior drum major, and Julianna Weiss is the junior drum major. The color guard student leaders are Jadan Forren

and Alex Coble. The instrumental section leaders are Greta Plechner and Lexi Heisler, woodwinds; Zach Herr and Martin Stoner, brass; Kendell Beiler, battery percussion; and Danielle Bishop, pit percussion. The staff members include Karen Huber, assistant marching band director; Shannon Garver, color guard designer/instructor; Stephenie Zdrojewski, color guard instructor; Jared Drennen, percussion instructor; Matt Green, brass instructor; Ken Zimmerman, drill designer; and David Bailey, public address announcer. To prepare for safely running the marching band program, Weyman developed “A Comprehensive Guide to Restarting Marching Band Under COVID-19 Protocols,” which was adopted by the school board this summer. Band camp began on Aug. 10, and each day opened with health screenings for students and staff members. All activities took place outside of the school building and with social distancing protocols in place. Everyone involved was required to wear face masks when passing each other or when interacting.

Creating a new show gave Weyman and his team an opportunity to try different styles and techniques. “(We explored) a few interesting staging considerations in terms of spacial management as well as in terms of the blending and mixing of voicing and timbral groups, Weyman remarked. “Frankly, these are concepts that we will more than likely continue to explore into the future as a result. The original show concept will be held over for consideration for the fall 2021 season, Weyman noted. Finding audiences will be vastly different this fall. Performances at football games will be dependent upon the football schedule and the interpretation of rules announced by Gov. Tom Wolf and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association. The Solanco High School marching band is a charter member of the Pennsylvania Marching Band Coalition and had originally planned to perform in three showcases. The first one, set for Saturday, Sept. 26, has been canceled. Weyman expressed a wish to perform at the remaining two showcases later in the season. He is also working on several alternative performance ideas and plans to announce details if they are finalized.

Solanco School District has posted its breakfast and lunch prices for the 2020-21 school year, as well as information about the Child Health Insurance Plan (CHIP). estate liquidations. “You won’t believe what it looks like. We have 50 tables full of things. We have the most gorgeous glassware. People don’t like glassware much these days, but when the sun hits it, it’s gorgeous.” In an almost poetic rhythm, Vasco read through the list of types of items that will be offered at the sale. “There’s a bed for your dog and a carrier for your cat,” she said. “There’s everything to equip a kitchen. And, although not needed right now, electric heaters.” Toys, books, games, a laundry sorter, a propane grill, curio cabinets, bookcases, other furniture, and decorations for practically every holiday except St. Patrick’s Day are priced to sell. Some clothing will also be available, including 20 brand-new high-visibility mesh T-shirts, size 3X. An assortment of free items will be set outside the church for visitors to take with them. Additionally, spe-

cial deals will be announced on Sept. 5 around noon to send as much home with shoppers as possible. “We don’t save anything from one year to the next. We would love to have somebody come in and take all the leftovers,” Vasco said. Food and beverages will not be available this year, so customers who liked to buy a cup of coffee or a snack while they shopped at previous yard sales will have to get their caffeine fix elsewhere. The proceeds from the Eclectic Extravaganza will be used for missions within the church, Vasco said. In the past, the UPW has donated to North Star Initiative and other organizations. This year, Vasco hopes the money will stay “very local” to help people impacted by the coronavirus and the resulting shutdown. For more information about the Eclectic Extravaganza, readers may call Vasco at 717-529-2528.

Community Action Partnership (CAP) recently announced it received a $22,336 grant from the Truist Foundation in support of Learning In FullTime (LIFT) Jobs, a partnership between CAP and Ephrata-based Four Seasons Produce. LIFT Jobs is a yearlong pilot program for low-income single mothers. It combines on-the-job training at Four Seasons Produce with intentional life skills development. Stipends are available to the participants for transportation, child care, and housing, three of the biggest barriers to employment facing single mothers struggling with poverty. By eliminating barriers to employment and supporting employees with personal and professional development, CAP is working to help the program’s participants escape the cycle of intergenerational poverty. LIFT Jobs takes the things people living in poverty need to become economically empowered - a good job, an understanding employer, and safety net supports - and brings them all together. This pilot program is testing a new model of employment that can be mutually beneficial to individuals who need jobs and companies looking to fill open positions. Funding from Truist Foundation will allow CAP to support the program participants with stipends for housing, including application fees, security deposits, first and last month’s rent, and any other housing-related expenses that could derail a participant’s successful employment in the program. For more information about Community Action Partnership, readers may visit www.caplanc.org.

16 - ADVERTISER - Solanco Edition - September 9, 2020

Volunteers Lend A Hand Volunteers from Donegal Insurance Group spruced up the grounds of Lancaster EMS’ Lincoln Highway East station in Lancaster during a morning of service on July 31. While Lancaster EMS’ first responders continued their focus and attention on the community’s medical needs, nearly a dozen

Donegal volunteers spent a few hours pulling weeds, mulching, and planting flowers and shrubs along the exterior of the East Lampeter Township station. Shrubs, perennials, and mulch were donated for the project by Hegeman’s Landscape & Tree Service. With an

emphasis on safety, volunteers followed all CDC regulations and guidelines, such as social distancing, for this project. Following completion of the gardening, Donegal provided lunch for volunteers and Lancaster EMS administrative staff and first responders.

S TAY S A F E So our community can stay open. It’s good to be open. But to stay open, we need to stop the spread of COVID-19. We can do that with three simple steps: • Wear a mask in public

• Wash your hands often

• Maintain social distance — 6 feet

These methods have been shown to work. So let’s keep at it. Thank you for doing your part.
