Presenter Scott Shank is a former president of the Solanco Historical Society and a current director of the organization. His grandmothers were teachers in the school system in Bart Township. The information for his program was derived from the secretarial notes of one of two social organizations in Bart - a lyceum of young people and a Young People’s Society - from the year 1884. The program is free and open to the public. The venue is located 6 miles south of Quarryville across from the Robert Fulton Birthplace. SOCIAL GATHERING

Five To Vie For New Fair Queen Crown By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Five young women will compete in the inaugural Solanco Fair Queen Pageant on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 6 p.m. in the East Drumore Township municipal building, 925 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. The winner will represent the Solanco Fair at the 2019 Pennsylvania State Fair Queen Pageant, which will be held in Hershey in January. “The committee is so excited to have this group of contestants represent the Solanco Fair at the Solanco Fair Queen Pageant,” commented organizer Carly Foose. “They each are well-spoken and carry themselves with such poise. While every young lady has a unique background, their passion for the Solanco Fair and their community shines brightly.”
The contestants will be evaluated on their speeches, essays, personal interviews, quality of poise, answers to on-stage questions, and overall interaction with the judges. The winner will receive a $500 scholarship, and the runner-up will receive a $250 scholarship. The scholarships are funded by the Solanco Fair board and will be disbursed once the winners complete their obligations. “Although only two young ladies will be walking away with a title, it takes a lot of courage - especially in the first year of a program - to compete, and I admire each girl for taking the opportunity to participate,” Foose remarked. The candidates for 2018 Solanco Fair Queen are Lydia Fetterman, Alexis Findley, Kelsey Peifer, Amber Pownall, and Alicia Rohrer. See Fair Queen Pageant pg 3

As far as Torah Bontrager can tell, she is the first Amish person to graduate from an Ivy League school. Bontrager’s path to Columbia University was fraught with pain, however, and she shared her story in her memoir, “An Amish Girl in Manhattan: Escaping at Age 15, Breaking All the Rules, and Feeling Safe Again,” which was published in 2017. Bontrager’s experiences led to the formation of the Amish Heritage Foundation (AHF), which is dedicated to advocating for people inside and outside the Amish Church - what is known in nonAmish societies as “Old Order” and making the transition smoother for those who have left or wish to leave. “We’re the only nonsectarian institution that advocates for Amish people and engages their issues and educates the general public,” Bontrager commented. “The three overarching initiatives of the foundation are education, female-driven entrepreneurship/ leadership, and health and well-being.” Along with AHF board member Elam Zook, who describes himself as noncompliant Amish, Bontrager will host what they hope will become an annual conference, “Disrupting History: Reclaiming Our Amish Story,” on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 28 and 29, at Franklin & Marshall College, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster. The conference will be packed full of opportunities for attendees to explore issues related to Amish culture. Recordings of all 10 speakers and the panel discussion will be made accessible online for later reference. The keynote address by law professor Marci Hamilton on Sept. 28 will focus on children’s rights. In her book “God vs. the Gavel: The Perils of Extreme Religious Liberty,” which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, Hamilton wrote extensively about the Supreme Court case of Wisconsin vs. Yoder. Galen Guengerich, who grew up Mennonite, will give the keynote address on Sept. 29. In his book “God Revised: How Religion Must
Evolve in a Scientific Age,” Guengerich asserts that the first step toward being set free is discovering where one belongs. The conference will also include speakers who have left other religions, a sexual assault survivor and plaintiff in a landmark Amish case, and a panel of minority entrepreneurs including those with Amish, Mennonite, Navajo, Jewish, and Muslim backgrounds. The Sept. 28 session will close with an uplifting live music performance by rhythm-and-blues singer-songwriter Tanisha Avent in the second-floor lounge of Tellus360, 24 E. King St., Lancaster. The performance will be open to the public. The conference will conclude on Sept. 29 with a closing reception hosted by Amish-Mennonite artist Freiman Stoltzfus at the Freiman Stoltzfus Gallery in downtown Lancaster. Conference attendance is limited to 150 people. “We want this inaugural historic event to be truly memorable,” Bontrager said. “The smaller group gives everyone in attendance the chance to connect meaningfully and develop lasting relationships.” Tickets are required and may be purchased at https://Disrupting History.eventbrite.com. A limited number of complimentary tickets for sexual assault survivors and exAmish are available, thanks to donor sponsorships. The foundation is looking for sponsors and volunteers to help make the event a success. To learn more, folks may visit w w w. SUMMER DRIVING IS HERE!
By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Nearly 350 vehicles were entered in last year’s Conestoga Classic car show, and organizers hope to attract at least that many at this year’s event, the fifth annual, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Main Street, Conestoga. “It’s the talk of cruisers everywhere,” said Rae Ann Henry, secretary of Friends of the Southern Regional Police Force, which hosts the car show. “People are telling me they’re already registered. They want to be part of the first 200. We have the best goodie bags.” As Henry indicated, the first 200 entries will receive a goodie bag and a souvenir dash plaque. All registered participants will receive lunch, which will be provided by the Conestoga Fire Company, and they will be entered to win door prizes. To encourage early registration, a discount on the entry fee will be offered until Saturday, Sept. 15. Folks who wait to register at the event will be charged full price. Participants may arrive when they are able and leave at their leisure. In order to be parked together, car clubs must arrive as a group. Hot rods, antiques, new muscle cars, motorcycles, pickup
trucks, and more will be parked on Main Street from Rineer Road to the Conestoga Wagon Restaurant. Parking for spectators will be located at the fire company, 3290 Main St., and Conestoga Elementary School, 100 Hill St. The car show will be held rain or shine. “We’re praying for no rain. So far, we’ve been blessed (with dry days) for four years,” commented Friends member Melanie Scheid. “It’s the busiest day in town. It’s fun to see the streets full of people.” “We bring all the happy we can to Conestoga,” Henry added. The hub of the event will be located at the fire company and the neighboring Conestoga Ambulance Association, which share a driveway. The door prize drawings and award ceremony will take place at the ambulance building. Prizes will be awarded in 10 categories, with most winners selected by trophy sponsors. Disc jockey Bryan Scott will serve as master of ceremonies, and DJ Edge will play music. Lancaster Barnstormers mascot Cylo is slated to visit at some point. The fire company will sell cold beverages and hot food, including chicken corn soup, burgers, hot dogs, and french fries. Ice cream will also be available for purchase.
A number of vendors will sell their wares at the fire company. Friends president Bob Heckrote noted that due to limited space, vendors have been restricted to sellers of non-food, automotiverelated items. Anyone interested in vending may call Heckrote at 717472-0087 to learn more. Additionally, for a small fee, folks may whack a car. Last year, eventgoers were offered the opportunity to write on a vehicle, but this year, they may apply sledgehammers instead of pens. Proceeds from the car show registrations and the whack-a-car activity will be divided between the Friends and the fire company. “From day one, (the fire company) got behind us and supported this event,” said Friends vice president Joel Herzog. The Friends of the Force has used past proceeds to support a National Night Out event and to host officer appreciation banquets for the Southern Regional Police Department. “(We thank) the community for their support these past four years,” Heckrote remarked. “Local businesses have been generous with door prizes. It is a community event. … We wouldn’t be able to do it with them.”
For more information about the Conestoga Classic or to register, readers may find “Friends of the Southern Regional Police Force” on Facebook, email friendsof srpd@yahoo.com, or call Friends member Rich Graham at 717917-6500. Pictured on front: The Friends
of the Southern Regional Police Force will host the fifth annual Conestoga Classic car show on Sept. 22. Organizers hope to attract at least 350 cars, trucks, and motorcycles.

David Meisky will give a history on Confederate currency, which was used by the Southern states around the time of the Civil War. A history graduate of George Mason University, Meisky retired from the Fairfax County Public Library. He has been a Civil War re-enactor for a number of years and started a living historian portrayal as “Extra Billy” Smith in the spring of 2008 and as a Confederate army paymaster, which allows him to display and discuss his collection of period currencies. As an infantry private, he has served for a number of years with a group called the Fairfax Rifles, Company D of the 17th Virginia Infantry Regiment. The roundtable programs are free and open to the public. For more information, readers may call Micky at 717940-7411.

Youth Night will include group games and free time, as well as a Bible lesson followed by a time of small group interaction with samegender peers and Christian adults. Organizers explained that Youth Night exists to share the truths of the Gospel of grace with young men and women and navigate the joys

Individuals are invited to attend an information session for the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period to receive valuable information to assist persons in making a wellinformed decision about their health and drug coverage. Medicare Advantage Plans and Part D Prescription Drug Plans are allowed to change the amounts of their plan deductibles, co-pays, and total out-of-pocket expenses, as well as their drug formularies each year, which is why Medicare strongly recommends that beneficiaries compare their current plan against other plans available for 2019. The information sessions are for people already on Medicare and enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan or Prescription Drug plan. Space is limited and registration is required. To register, readers may call Lancaster County Office of Aging at 717299-7979, 800-801-3070, or by email aging@co.lancaster.pa.us. Sessions will take place at the following locations: Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 10:30 a.m. at Millersville Senior Center, St. Paul Lutheran Church,

for 18 years and welcomes women of all ages and church affiliations. Each Wednesday gathering runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and includes breakfast refreshments, praise and worship, a video teaching session, and small group discussion. There is also a prayer group that meets during the morning activities. In contrast to previous years, just one course of study will be offered this fall. “Sermon on the Mount” by Jen Wilkin is an in-depth exploration of the words of Jesus in Matthew 5-7 with the aim of understanding the message as it was originally given and heard. These three chapters include some of the most familiar passages in all of Scripture: the Beatitudes, the Lord’s Prayer, the Golden Rule, and many other teachings that are even recognized by popular
culture, but in fragmented form. With an overarching theme of kingdom citizenship, in this section, Jesus delivers a well-ordered, cohesive message that challenges listeners to think differently about what it means to be His follower. This study is an invitation to take a figurative seat on the mountainside and learn from Jesus, just as His disciples did. Studies at COPS are selected so that all women can learn together whether they are completely new to Bible study or highly advanced. Wilkin teaches practical methods for studying the Bible, which are incorporated in the daily workbook lessons. She encourages women to learn everything they possibly can from the text before consulting other sources. “We have not offered a Jen

Wilkin study before,” said Jennifer Hatch, an administrative leader for the group. “We were initially drawn by the title and a desire to understand what Jesus taught in His sermon, and then it impressed us to see the author’s commitment to Bible literacy and promoting good study habits that can be applied to any reading of the Bible.” For anyone interested in learning more about the fall study and ministry at Change of Pace South, the women will have an informational booth at the Solanco Fair, set for Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 19 to 21. “This is something new for us,” Hatch remarked. “Our studies are usually in full swing during the fair, but the timing worked out for us to participate this year. We have a really neat group of ladies who are sincere in extending their friendship and hospitality. This is an exciting
opportunity to visit with the community and share who we are.” Women are encouraged to preregister at www.changeofpacesouthpa.org. Registrations will also be accepted at the door on Sept. 26. As a convenience, “Sermon on the Mount” workbooks will be available at the first meeting. The study will continue on Wednesday mornings for nine additional weeks and conclude on Nov. 28. Nursery care will be provided for infants and toddlers. A children’s program will offer Bible stories, crafts, music, games, and snacks for children ages 2 through 6. Supervision will be provided for homeschooling children as well. A freewill offering will be received each week to cover child care expenses. For more information, women may view the website or contact Hatch at 717-548-2962.

Tennis Team Currently Undefeated at 5-0 by Mona Steinhauer
What a difference a year makes. The tennis team concluded the 2017 season with just four wins. They did not have a single senior on the team. Fast-forward to 2018. With last Wednesday’s 5-2 win over Section One’s Penn Manor, tby he Mares stand undefeated at 5-0. In a match that started on Aug. 31, Solanco capped the away victory, winning two of three doubles and three of four singles matches. Kerith Paine and Faith Redcay opened with an 8-5 win at No. 1 and Gabby Griffonetti and Elsie Zaborskiy followed with an 8-6 win. Solanco almost came away with a clean sweep as Sophia Baker and Kelsey Sheets battled before bowing out 8-8 (7-5). The Comets knotted the scoring at 2-2 with a win at No. 1 doubles but Solanco responded with strong singles play to remain undefeated. Redcay posted a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 and Griffonetti won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3. Zaborskiy capped the scoring with a 7-5, 2-1 (retired) No. 3 result. “Gabby and Elsie are having a phenomenal year,” said head coach Todd

Brown. “Both are undefeated in singles matches and are a fierce doubles team. They both play a very strategic match.” The Mares opened the 2018 season with a pair of 6-1 wins over Octorara and Oxford. They added a 7-0 nonleague win over Columbia before holding off McCaskey 4-3 on Aug. 29.
“McCaskey was undefeated in Section One coming into the match,” noted Brown. “In 95 degree heat, Gabby, Kerith and Elsie all won tiebreaker matches to secure the 3 hour and 17 minute match.” CROSS COUNTRY The harrier teams opened the 2018 league season with a tri-meet at Manheim Township last Tuesday. The Mules battled the heat in addition to Cedar Crest (17-48) and the hosting Streaks (15-54) but when all was said and done, fell short of a team win. “We got beat by two very good teams,” said head coach Craig Ausel. “Township should win the league this season and Crest should be in the top three. Our No. 1, Ben Stickler (16th, 19:28), struggled a bit but will bounce back,” he continued. “Freshman Avery Jacobsen picked up the slack, finishing as our No. 1. He amazes us with his determination to race. “The heat was a factor but everyone faced the same conditions,” noted Ausel of the start time being moved back to 6:15. “Some responded to the challenge. Some did not.” Jacobson, with an 18:49, was the only Solanco runner to place in the top 15. He was 11th. Tate Fisher (26th), Colin Althoff (27th), and Dan Keller rounded out Photo by Mona Steinhauer Solanco’s Andy Teaman turned in a round of 46 to finish 13th the top five. Solanco’s Sam Buckwalter turns the corner on a run in the Mules’ 43-28 nonleague win over New Oxford last Friday in Quarryville.
“We have just eight runners but our ladies gave everything they had,” said Ausel. “They responded well to the tough conditions.” Junior Chesley Ledesma was the top finisher for the Mares, placing 15th with a 24:17. “Chesley and senior captain Aubree Roop (18th, 24:22) continue to improve,” noted Ausel. “IF freshman Halle Brown (26th, 26:05) can start to run with them, we will be much improved. We’re also glad to have Hannah Wheeler back this season and we hope to get Anna Stickler and Sarah Snyder healthy soon.” Also placing: Wheeler (30th), Evelyn Billings (36) and Kirsten O’Connell (37th). FOOTBALL The Mules were looking to cap the non-league season at 3-0 with a victory this past Friday night. Visiting New Oxford, fresh off a 25-24 thriller over CV, was looking for their second

straight win and seemed to be on track after chewing up five minutes of the clock on their first possession and taking the lead with a passing TD. The Mules were held scoreless in that first quarter but finally got into gear, scoring 36 points over the middle two frames, and finishing with a solid 43-28 win. “Anytime you get scored on, it’s a concern,” stated head coach Tony Cox. “They caught us a couple of times on third and long but then we made some defensive adjustments and we stopped the run better. Offensively we just kept doing what we do. We kept moving the ball and chunking time off the clock.” After turning the ball over inside the ten late in the first quarter, the defense held and Solanco knotted the score early in the second frame on a five yard run by Nafis Moore (61 yards). The Colonials responded with a 35 yard passing TD with 4:10 left in the half. It was their last lead of the night as Solanco buckled down with four straight scores to take control. Joel McGuire led the charge, rushing for 191 yards and scoring five touchdowns. “He also had to come in on defense to fill some spots a couple
of times,” noted Cox. “He’s been doing a great job and is a leader by example.” With Nick Yannutz adding 171 yards on 24 rushes, the Mules finished with 434 rushing yards on the night and lead Section Two opponents with most points scored (127). “I think the whole defense did a nice job and made the adjustments they needed to make,” stated Cox. “Seth Harnish and Hunter Shaw, in particular, combined for 25 tackles. They stepped up. “We’re happy to be 3-0 but this week we start Section Two play with Garden Spot,” he continued. “Everyone in the section is good so we need to stay focused.” GOLF At Foxchase Golf Course last Wednesday the linksmen competed in their fourth Section Two match this season and due to the heat, played just nine holes instead of 18. “Our goal was 195 and we finished with a 204,” said head coach Greg Minnich. “Freshman Andy Teaman led the way with a 46 but he had a tough day putting. Jessie Spangler was able to shoot 50 even with hitting two balls out of bounds. Greta Plechner

the thinking is that the girls should be in the hunt in every game this year. “In terms of opponents, Section Three doesn’t get any easier, but we are excited to make our mark and feel we are ready to compete with them,” said head coach Ken Yoder. The Mares return three all-stars in Grace Kreider, Reece Curry-Saner and Alana Yoder and add cross country standout Hannah Sweda to anchor the defense. Solanco opened its season with a 6-3 non-league loss to Kennard-Dale on Sept 1 and last week battled L-S and Garden Spot. the post-season last year. Unfortunately, L-S broke things open with four goals in a ten minute span and held that lead to halftime. “At that point, our goal was to win the second half and we did,” said Yoder. “Yoder scored on a beautiful free kick from about 30 yards out and freshman Maya Dolan made a great finish on a nice cross from Nikki Trout. If we can avoid mistakes in the back and start doing a little better in finishing in front of the net, we will at least give some teams more than they are bargaining for,” he added. The going was similar against K-D as Solanco gave up four early goals and never recovered. Yoder recorded two goals and one assist and “freshman Grace Unger chipped in the third goal to score her first of hopefully many high school goals,” said Yoder. After a scoreless first half against Garden Spot on Saturday, Solanco gave up two goals within a minute and another with five left on the clock and suffered a 3-1 defeat. Yoder’s goal in the 76th minute prevented the shutout. VOLLEYBALL With just one starter back, head coach Meghan Cross will look to rebuild this season. “We have seven sophomores and 12 freshman,” noted Cross, “but we have a lot of potential.” The Mares opened the season last Tuesday against Manheim Central and took one set from a traditionally strong Barons’ squad. After pulling out a 25-22 first set thriller, Manheim regrouped and regained control, winning 25-17, 25-10, 25-11. “We got into a rhythm that first set, were moving and communicating,” said Cross. “But our passing dipped after that, Manheim made a couple of runs and we lost our confidence. “Kara McClune (6 kills, 1 ace) was a leader on the court with a brand new lineup,” she added. “Not one of these girls have played in a rotation all together before so we are working hard to make it work. Brianna Langley, our libero, also played a great defensive game with 32 digs (1ace).” Cheyanne Cutler chipped in with 3 blocks, and Emma Canale added 6 assists. On the road Thursday, Solanco Photo by Mona Steinhauer fought off a 25-13 first set loss and Solanco’s Faith Redcay handled Penn Manor’s Hannah Smith in almost pulled out a second set win, straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to help the Mares to a 5-2 nonleague win falling short 25-22. E-town prevailed over the host Comets last Wednesday. in the third set as well, 25-11.
“The scores don’t indicate the many long rallies that could have gone either way,” said Cross. “This was a great game and showed the potential of this young team.” Langley scrambled for 20 digs and Canale (5 assists) and McClune (4 aces, 16 digs) each put up three blocks to spark the defense. Nathaly Molinarez added two kills. BOYS’ SOCCER With the hopes of building success, the Mules find themselves in Section Three this season but opened the year with a handful of non-league losses, 4-1 against Kennard-Dale and 8-0 against Lampeter-Strasburg last Tuesday. The Mules return eight starters from a 1-14 record last year and look to move up in the standings. “We are attempting to build the program from the junior high up,” said first year head coach Jamie Snyder. “We have no freshman at the high school level this season.” Snyder coached the junior high boys at L-S for 12 years and was the JV coach at Solanco the past eight seasons. “We started out playing our game against L-S but a few goals went in and took the steam out of us,” he added. “The heat was also a factor and they had a little more depth. “We have struggled with scoring for years,” Snyder continued, “so I’m trying to incorporate more shooting drills to improve our accuracy. Jesse (98), Greta (109) and freshman Olivia Lasko (111) all carded personal bests in competition.” Sophomore Tyler Sellers also competed. “We’re a young squad with just one senior so this has been a season of setting individual goals and looking to improve each week as we build for the future,” he added. More Than A Sightseeing Tour In June 1976, Theresa Newell made her first trip to Israel. “The first day I was there, we were taken to the Western Wall,” recalled Newell. “When I walked up to the wall to pray, God just met me there,
Sunday, Sept. 8, to Friday, Sept. 20, 2019. Using the Shoresh Study Tours program, the group will travel to the coast, desert, and mountains, stopping at places where biblical events are believed to have occurred to help the travelers dig deeper into the Scriptures. The tour will include both Old and New Testament sites and information about the history of modern Israel. The focus of the study during the trip is on Christ and a better understanding of His ministry. Newell’s second trip to Israel occurred in 1979, when she was asked to take a group of students from a Christian school back to Israel. She stayed for a month teaching students, and when she

After leading so many tours of Israel, Newell noted that she has been struck by both the differences and similarities between bands of participants. “Each group is unique, and each bonds in a wonderful way,” she said. “They all come back saying they are surprised by how much (more) information (they now have about) the Bible they have been studying all these years, and that tells me we are achieving what we set out to do … to help people see Jesus more clearly and understand the Bible more clearly.”
Before moving to New Holland, Newell was on staff at the Trinity School for Ministry in Pittsburgh, where she earned master’s and doctoral ministry degrees. While on staff at the school, she created the Israel travel study program. To learn more about the September 2019 trip to Israel may email theresa@cmj-usa.org or call 412680-6843. returned, others began asking her to take them to Israel. “Every year I began taking people back,” said Newell, who added that in the 1980s, she realized that study programs for Israel visitors were sparse. “There was some formal (education), but for people going for just a few weeks, the content was lacking,” she noted. Around that same time, Newell was introduced to the international director of CMJ, which stands for Church’s Ministry Among Jewish People. The ministry was founded in 1809 in London. Newell was asked to open an American office in Fairfax, Va. She and other members of the ministry began asking the question “How do we get more biblical content into a travel program for laypeople?” “(We wanted) a program for people who wanted to deepen their relationship with Jesus and understand the relationship between Old and New Testament and understand Jesus in the Second Temple period,” explained Newell. “That’s how we came to develop the Shoresh program.” Newell explained that “Shoresh” is Hebrew for “root.” “(It’s a study program about) the Jewish roots of the Christian faith and seeing Jesus in His timeframe and understanding that as we walk the land,” said Newell. She uses her knowledge of Hebrew to bring out the nuances in the Bible and bring deeper meaning to the text. “I use Hebrew to help people understand, (because) when we hear what the people in (Jesus’) day heard, it helps us to be better disciples. A clearer understanding of the Bible is what Shoresh is all about.”

and I said, ‘Father, I am here,’ and I heard, ‘… and you’ll be back.’” Newell, who is director of communications for CMJ USA, has now led more than 50 trips to Israel. When she returned to the United States after her first trip, she began learning Hebrew. “That was a big adventure,” she noted. Her ability to use the language will be employed again, when Newell leads a group to Israel from

Races To Fund Children’s Programming Julia Connolly, executive director of Hands-on House, has great appreciation for the beauty of the challenging course that Hands-on House Half Marathon runners enjoy. While the half marathon is
known for its challenging hills, Connolly delights in the bucolic scenery the run offers. “It’s a beautiful course with farms, trees, and a covered bridge, she said. “It truly captures Lancaster’s character. The 15th annual Hands-on
Runners who take part in the Hands-on House Half Marathon will traverse a scenic portion of the Lancaster County countryside on Sept. 29. The event will also offer 10K and 5K routes and will raise funds for educational programming at the children’s museum.
House Half Marathon, which also offers 10K and 5K courses, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, beginning at 8 a.m. All three runs will begin and end at Hands-on House, 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The 10K utilizes part of the half-marathon course, and the 5K winds through a local neighborhood. Strollers are permitted in the 5 and 10K runs, but pets are not allowed for safety reasons. Connolly noted that water stops and comfort stations will be available along the routes and that bagels and apples will be offered to runners at the end of the race. Each run will have its own start, and all runners will be chiptimed. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female half-marathon runners, and all half-marathoners will receive medals. Prizes will also be given to the top three males and females in a number of age groups for the half marathon and to the top five males and females for the 5K and 10K courses. According to Connolly, race
organizers have set a goal of attracting 800 to 1,000 participants this year. At its peak, more than 1,000 runners took part in the event. Registration opened earlier this year to give more runners a chance to sign up. Runners may register at www.handson house.org/run/ or by searching for “Hands-on House Half Marathon, 10K & 5K 2018 at www.active.com. Half-marathon runners must register prior to race day, and online registration will end on Thursday, Sept. 27. Those wishing to participate in the 5K or 10K races may register ahead of time or on the day of the event beginning at 6:30 a.m. Packet pickup will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, at Hands-on House and from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. on the morning of the race. Free long-sleeved tech shirts are guaranteed for runners who preregister for the events. While the Hands-on House race courses spotlight the hallmarks of Lancaster County scenery, the event also offers a unique opportunity for children
and non-runners to enjoy the museum during the race. “The museum will open at 8 a.m., and runners receive coupons for children, said Connolly, who explained that children may enjoy the museum for free with a paying adult. The coupons give a spouse, grandparent, or family friend a chance to enjoy the museum with a child or children while one or both parents run the course. Funds raised by the races will benefit educational programming and exhibits of Hands-on House, a museum for children that first opened in 1987 in a Victorian house located across the street from its present location. In February of 2000, the museum moved to 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, and just about doubled its floor space. Hands-on House is a nonprofit organization that exists to use play to create landmark experiences for children ages 2 to 10. Readers who would like to learn more about Hands-on House may visit www.handsonhouse.org.
