CROP Walk To Celebrate 50 Years Of Fighting Hunger
John and Joleen Gamber did not receive any premarital counseling before they tied the knot 27 years ago. John and Casie Garver went through six sessions of counseling with their pastor prior to embarking their journey of matrimony, now a decade strong. Both couples, however, have found value in attending FamilyLife’s “Weekend to Remember” marriage conferences and want to share something similar with Southern End residents in an accessible way. “ We know that marriage is not always easy,” Casie explained. “We wanted to bring encouragement and help to other marriages.” “We’re excited to bring a more reasonable (cost option), and they don’t have to travel,” Joleen added. The two couples, who are members

“Next year we will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Solanco CROP Hunger Walk, but this year, we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the national CROP Hunger Walk,” said local coordinator Mary Etta Reinhart. “We are setting big goals this year.” Reinhart noted that the goal of raising $12,000 through the event on Saturday, Oct. 19, is doable, as last year, 67 participants raised more than $11,500 - the fourthlargest amount raised since the Solanco CROP Walk began. “We had See CROP Hunger Walk pg 5

During the conference, attendees will watch DVDs on six topics and process what they have learned with the aid of a workbook, which will be provided. Married and engaged couples are invited to attend, as people in both stages of life may benefit from learning about God’s purpose and plan, as well as overcoming isolation, fulfilling responsibilities, improving communication and working through conflict, experiencing real intimacy, and leaving a lasting legacy. want to take yoga to underserved populations,” Weaver said. AIM to Empower has implemented yoga programs in places including Lancaster County Prison, Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center, Refugee Center and Community School at Reynolds, and Lourdeshouse Maternity Home. At GTGH, plenty of food will be available to purchase from local vendors such as Upohar, Reunion Food Truck, Grape Leaf Cafe, and The Lancaster Stroopies Company, so Knepper encourages attendees to come hungry. A new food tour will allow people to purchase tickets and receive a stamp card that will direct them to the eight booths at the fair participating in the tour. A volunteer or business owner at each stand will provide food education or information about the business, as well as samples of small dishes such as samosas and Liberian rice bread. Children can participate in a scavenger hunt centered on the Declaration of Human Rights in honor of Human Rights Day, celebrated on Dec. 10. Participants who complete the hunt will be eligible to receive a book about human rights. Since it began in 2008, the fair has become a staple for many Lancaster-area residents as they shop for the holidays. Knepper, who resides in Lancaster and works as a nurse in Hershey, read a newspaper article about an alternative gift fair happening in Harrisburg and thought it would be great to bring one to Lancaster. “I just loved what they were doing, because I’ve always been kind of a minimalist, and giving gifts that would also serve a deeper purpose really resonated with me,” Knepper said. To learn more, readers may visit www.giftsthatgivehope.org/ lancaster or search for “Gifts That Give Hope: Lancaster’s Alternative Gift Fair” on Facebook.
greeting card and an explanatory insert about how the donation will sustain and provide for others. Founder Jenn Knepper said that the fair also offers plenty of options for individuals who would rather purchase something tangible to gift those on their holiday shopping list with as well. In addition to the 30 nonprofits, approximately 12 marketplace vendors will sell fair trade items. “We try to emphasize that there’s something for everybody,” explained Knepper. “And if you are going to buy tangible things, make it something that is ethically sourced. People want to make those choices, and the fair brings a lot of options into one place.” The fair serves as a strong community-building event as the nonprofits that participate are able to share their stories and missions with shoppers, building both relationships and awareness. One of the new participants in this year’s fair will be Bridge, an award-winning cultural exchange startup established by Somalian refugee Mustafa Nuur. “We are a social enterprise company, and we use cultural events to connect people in the community with refugees,” explained Nuur. Bridge, which allows people to purchase inhome dining experiences with local refugee families, offers refugees an opportunity to use their existing skills to make a supplemental income and provides Americans with cross-cultural experiences in their own hometown. Exclusive gift certificates will be available for GTGH attendees to purchase. Another new GTGH participant for 2019 will be AIM to Empower, a nonprofit organization founded by Beth Weaver in 2017 with the intent of creating connection and opportunity through the practice of yoga. “I’ve seen the positive impact (yoga) can have on people, so we

“The cool thing (about ‘Weekend to Remember’) was there were people there who were married 50 years. They said they wanted to learn more about marriage,” Joleen related. John Garver noted that events like “Weekend to Remember” and “The Art of Marriage” are not punitive. “It’s a good time for us to take a pause and assess where we’re at,” he said. “It’s not a critique; it’s more of a refresher. It’s not lovey-dovey, and nobody is here to grade you.” Part of the curriculum will include interviews with couples that will relate authentic stories from their marriages. “They’re not cheesy,” Joleen said, noting that some of the stories are humorous while others have more gravitas. “(The conference) touches on a lot of things you go through as married couples: finances, raising children, crisis. Steve Thurston was riding the subway in Philadelphia when he saw something suspicious. At first, he thought that he was observing a father with his troublesome teenage daughter, but the more he paid attention, the more he could tell his initial assumption was incorrect. The pair left the train heading in one direction, and Steve headed in another. The incident stuck with him, however, and he told his wife, Amy, about it when he arrived home later that day. They agreed that Steve had probably witnessed an incident of human trafficking. “He realized he missed an opportunity (to intervene),” Amy said. At the time, the Thurstons were living in King of Prussia. Steve had a marketing and advertising background. Amy had worked in higher education for 15 years, and she had supported girls who had been raped or abused. The couple decided that together, they could make an impact on preventing human trafficking, par-
ticularly by identifying potential victims’ vulnerabilities and bolstering their confidence. The Thurstons moved to Lancaster because of the area’s high rate of human trafficking. They established Hope. Inspire. Love. in January 2017 in order to eradicate human trafficking and sexual exploitation. “Freedom is our legacy” is the organization’s motto. Amy has been busy speaking to teenagers aging out of foster care, high school students, parenting groups, and others in order to raise awareness about human trafficking and how young people can be tricked into it. “Teaching children they have a voice is huge,” Amy said. “The more you educate and make (transparency) a part of everyday life, the less they feel they have to keep things secret.” Recently, Amy expanded her scope to include law enforcement at the request of a police chief who said that he did not want his staff to become numb to prostitution. Amy explained that often sex workers wind up in that career because they were trafficked. Hope. Inspire. Love. also
works alongside North Star Initiative and other interventioneffort operations to help rescue survivors and connect them with community groups and faithbased organizations that will help them recover. The Thurstons have participated in the A21 Walk for Freedom in Harrisburg for the past three years. They are launching Lancaster’s first Walk for Freedom on Saturday, Oct. 19, starting from Binns Park, 120 N. Queen St., Lancaster, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and they hope to start another iteration of the event in Reading next year. Walk for Freedom is a global fundraising and awareness event started by A21, an international nonprofit organization that fights modern-day slavery. The walks look similar, no matter where they are held: Participants dressed in black and holding signs walk single file through the host city, distributing flyers containing information about human trafficking and ways to make change possible. Registration on Oct. 19 will open at 9 a.m., and the walk will step off at 9:30 a.m. The route of a little under 2 miles will take participants around downtown Lancaster. Individuals who are

Pennsylvania’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is offering its families a new way to shop for WIC food benefits using an Electronic Benefits Transfer (eWIC) card. WIC families in Lancaster County may begin using this new tool. The eWIC card is designed to make shopping quick, easy and convenient for WIC families and their grocery stores. WIC participants will save time at the checkout and can buy WIC foods in as many shopping trips as they need throughout the month. Participants may also have access to a new WICShopper smartphone app, allowing them to scan a food’s bar code to determine if it is a WIC-allowed food.

The walk will be held at Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road West, Holtwood, at 9 a.m. Registration will open at 8:30 a.m. Solanco Neighborhood Ministries executive director Teresa Dolan will speak before the walk begins. The course will be approximately 5 miles in length and will wind through the park on a variety of surfaces. A route with paved surfaces will be available for participants pushing strollers and pulling wagons. Leashed pets will be welcome. Preregistration is not required to participate in the Solanco CROP Hunger Walk, although Reinhart invites readers to contact her at 717-808-4306 or ereinhart403@comcast.net for fundraising envelopes. To encourage fundraising, Christy Lapp has donated gift cards to C.R. Lapp’s Restaurant for those who raise above a set amount. “He does it every year, and I could just hug him for that because it encourages people to raise at least $100,” Reinhart said.

a big turnout and some ambitious fundraisers,” Reinhart commented. The proceeds from the Solanco walk will be divided between the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank and Church World Service (CWS). The national CROP Hunger Walk originated five decades ago through a group of young people in Bismarck, N.D., who wanted to mobilize their community to fight global hunger, and has grown to include more than 800 communities, which together have raised more than $8.3 million for CWS and their own local hunger-fighting agencies. To commemorate the anniversary, a trivia quiz will be held during the Oct. 19 walk. When they register at the event, participants will receive a quiz about CROP Hunger Walk history, and the answers will be revealed in informative signs posted along the route of the walk. Additionally, there will be a photo station for social media-oriented selfie opportunities. At another location, participants will be asked to pose for a photo with a sign showing how many years they have been involved with the

Lady Booters Shut Out Donegal, McCaskey our focus going in was to play our best game and to perform the skills we worked on,” she added. “We did just that and I couldn’t be happier with how close we got to OT play with such a talented team.” The Barons, with a 16-2 advantage in shots on goal, jumped in front with a goal late in the first half and Solanco tied the game with 11:36 left in the second half on a goal by Mariah Stoltzfus. Mylee Smith initiated the goal with a corner hit out to Brook Smith and then collected the rebound and dumped it to Stoltzfus who found the back of the cage. “We’ve been working hard at scoring on corners,” noted Hawkins, “and this season 90% of our goals have been scored on corners so that hard work is paying off.” Kimmy Beacham recorded 14 saves in the loss. With a chance to move up in the standings, Solanco traveled to Cocalico last Tuesday but came home with a 3-1 loss, leaving the Mares at 2-5 in section play. Down just 1-0 at the break, Cocalico’s relentless attack (28 shots, 12 corners) eventually wore the Mares down. The hosts scored twice in the second half to put the game out of reach. Beacham finished with 25 saves. Thursday afternoon at home, the Mares swept the series against McCaskey and used that 1-0 victory to move into a three-way tie with E-town and Cocalico (3-5 in Section One). Maggie Hirst’s goal 5:50 into overtime ended Solanco’s seven game losing streak. Smith was credited with the assist and Beacham earned the shutout with four saves. FOOTBALL After putting up three straight wins, the Mules were looking to go 2-0 in Section Two with Saturday’s Section Three win at Donegal last Tuesday. (Sept. 21) home game against a winless Conestoga Valley squad. The Bucks, however, forced two turnovers, came up with a pair of big play TD’s and held Solanco on downs four times in fourth-down situations en route to a 42-28 L-L League victory. The Mules, the top rushing team in the league, racked up 407 yards and held the Bucks, who passed for 192 yards and three TD’s, to 182 yards. Both teams traded first quarter TD’s with CV taking advantage of a fumble recovery and Grady Unger, who rushed for 181 yards, sprinting four yards to knot the score. Down 20-7 at the half, Solanco opened the third quarter with a three yard TD run by Nick Yannutz (85 rushing yards). CV countered, once again, this time with a six yard scoring strike. Take the field hockey team’s 2-1 loss to Manheim Central Friday, Sept. 20. The Barons were sitting at the top of Section Two with an undefeated mark. The Mares have two wins to their credit but were 50 seconds from taking the Barons into overtime. “I was almost in tears when it hit a minute, thinking we were going to possibly go into OT with the top team in our section,” an elated Whitney Hawkins said. “But, we were a little off our marks on that last goal and Photo by Vaughn Brown they scored on a rebound. game was close the entire time. Our defense did an amazing job turning away their dangerous players with speed,” he continued. “Donegal had some good chances but, like games earlier in the year for us, they just couldn’t find the back of the net. Hannah Wood, Maya Dolan, Arianna Sieberlich and Rilyn Sander all played great in the back and when Rilyn got hurt, Paige Balliet stepped in!” Less than 24 hours later, the Mares hosted McCaskey, the last place team in Section Two, and improved to 8-4 overall with their fifth shutout of the year, a 3-0 result.
ADVERTISER - Solanco Edition McCaskey, the Mares picked up another non-league win Saturday, Sept. 21, in quad meet action at home. Solanco blanked Columbia 25-13, 25-19, 25-10 before dropping a marathon match to Reading 3-2, after jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Madi Davis had a big day serving, recording a combined 11 aces. She also dished out 18 assists. Emma Canale was solid at the net, putting down 11 total kills and blocking eight times. A Quinonez anchored the defense with 17 digs with Kate Unger, who distributed eight aces, following with 11. Other contributors included Nathaly Molinarez with six aces and Anya Fisher with three blocks. More recently, the Mares faced Conestoga Valley and LampeterStrasburg in back-to-back action last Monday and Tuesday but came home with a pair of 3-0 losses. Solanco put up competitive numbers against the Bucks, sitting in third place in Section One, but fell short 25-18, 25-18, 25-21. “We certainly hung with them but unforced errors on important points cost us,” stated head coach Meghan Cross. “Our younger players stepped up and filled some important roles. They are doing well with the changes we continue to make and are learning to play better as a team.” Sparking the action at the net was Cheyanne Cutler with four kills while Molinarez added five aces to the attack. They are learning to play with intensity and push through the times that we struggle.” With five players recording three or more digs, team defense was on display. Quinonez was the standout with seven digs while Perry (6), Davis (4), Molinarez (3) and Cutler (3) also contributed. Davis also dished out four assists and served up four aces. five Solanco golfers competed in the L-L League Championships in hopes of extending their seasons. Logan Wagner and Olivia Lasko both qualified for the District Tournament slated for October 4-5 at Briarwood in York County. Wagner fired a team-low 79 on the par 71 course and tied for 10th place overall. “Logan’s 79 was slightly over his season average,” noted head coach Greg Minnich. “He was at one under par through the first eight holes but struggled a bit on the back nine. His 33 on the front nine was bested only by the tournament winner, Connor Strine, who finished with a 32. This was an awesome showing for Logan, a freshman,” Minnich added. Lasko carded 100 and was ninth in the girls’ field. Anna Sexton was close behind with 116 for 12th place. The qualifying mark was 104 or better. “Olivia saved her best round of the year for this tournament. Her score was almost nine strokes better than her average,” said Minnich. “Her round included three pars. As a sophomore, she will be making her first trip to districts. “Anna was playing in her first league tournament and gained valuable experience. She played alongside two seniors who shot 110 and 121 so

Valentine’s Day is often an occasion for happy changes in life: first confessions of love, confirmations of continued affection, and even proposals of marriage. For Willow Street residents Baron and Rene Geib, who have been married for 27 years, Valentine’s Day 2017 brought them into the section of their vows that no one wants to experience: the commitment to love in sickness as well as in health. The ordeal began with what looked like a blood blister on Baron’s arm. Heeding Rene’s urging, Baron had the spot biopsied, and on Valentine’s Day 2017, he received the diagnosis of cancer. A week later, he received confirmation that he had melanoma. While melanoma is often called skin cancer, the disease often reaches below the skin. After surgery to remove the tumor and some of his lymph nodes, Baron was told he had stage 3 cancer. Unfortunately, the surgery did not stop the progression of the disease. All of Baron’s lymph nodes had to be removed, and, in four days, a tumor grew from a pea size to a 4-inch diameter around his brachial artery and brachial nerve, causing complications in his arm. By the time Valentine’s Day rolled around again in 2018, the cancer had entered stage 4. Baron has undergone radiation and immunotherapy treatment, but the onset of pneumonitis caused the treatment to halt. He is now receiving only pain management as the primary course of care, Rene reported. If the pneumonitis decreases, immunotherapy may be restarted. “We are in limbo but have accepted whatever God has in store for our lives,” Rene said. “We take one day at a time, trusting God for each moment. We have decided to take what we have, enjoy it, learn from it, share it with others, and just live the best we can. We can’t complain: God has been with us each step of the way.” The Geibs are hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Baron has been a nurse for many years but has been unable to work since his disease progressed. Rene became a registered nurse this year, and she
will begin working in October. That will enable her to support herself and the three grandchildren for whom they are the primary caregivers. To relieve some of the stress caused by medical bills and living expenses, as well as to help the Geibs to move into a house with a first-floor master suite, friends have organized a Family Fun Fest that will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hempfield Fire Department Pavilion in Salunga Park, located next to the fire station, 19 W. Main St., Landisville. Admission to the Family Fun Fest will be free of charge, but there will food to buy and activity tickets to purchase. Along with activities geared toward children’s interests, the fest will feature carnival games, face painting, pumpkin painting, scarecrow making, balloon sculpting from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and a silent auction. Disc jockey Larry Schweers will broadcast recorded music, and entertainment will be provided by comedic magician Dan Armstrong and the band Night Loop. Other live music and entertainment is being confirmed. Food available for purchase that day will include Peters’ chicken barbecue, Achenbachs’ long johns, and Scoops ice cream. Barbecued chicken halves may be purchased a la carte, or they may be purchased in meals, which will also include baked potatoes, applesauce, and rolls with butter. Tickets for the barbecue will have a discounted price through Wednesday, Oct. 2, and may be purchased by contacting Danielle Brenneman at 717-283-7851 or davendanibren@yahoo.com or visiting www.eventbrite.com and searching for “Family Fun Fest in Support of the Geib Family.” Sponsorship opportunities are available, and readers may contact Brenneman for information. Donations will also be accepted on the “Support for Baron Geib’s Cancer Expenses” page on www.gofundme.com.

Brookfield Renewable recently announced a donation of $48,500 to Milagro House in Lancaster. The donation will be used to advance Milagro House’s mission of providing education, housing, and support services to women and their children who would otherwise be experiencing homelessness and poverty. The vision of the organization is to prepare the women and children with the skills they need to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty and move from dependency to selfsufficiency. Milagro House aims to provide a supportive atmosphere where women can receive an education while living with their children in a safe, nurturing environment. The program positions education as a catalyst for women moving themselves and their children from poverty into the economic mainstream. By giving women an opportunity to obtain a GED and/or post-secondary credential supported by programming that develops valuable life skills - Milagro House strives to open doors to meaningful employment, independence, and empowerment.
Representatives of Brookfield Renewable recently presented a donation of $48,500 to Milagro House in Lancaster. When they leave Milagro House, women are able to afford safe, stable housing where their children can grow and thrive. Through the Beyond Milagro House program, women are supported with the same services during their first year after leaving the program to help ensure a success-
ful transition. Brookfield Renewable owns and operates four hydropower facilities in Pennsylvania, including two in the Lancaster region: Holtwood and Safe Harbor. Brookfield Renewable also operates several parks in the region, along with fishing access and boat launches.

Chamber Launches New Partnership
This autumn, Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, will showcase the work of the late Lewis Lanza Rudolph. Opening receptions will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. during October and November First Fridays, Oct. 4 and Nov. 1. Mulberry Art Studios has held two exhibitions of Rudolph’s work over the past few years, but Rudolph was known as such a prolific artist in his day that every piece in this show has not been exhibited since his death. Rudolph began painting in 1966 and continued into the late 1990s, mostly painting in obscurity. Rudolph lived his entire life in his childhood home in Red Bank, N.J., and spent his free time alone, walking the boardwalks of Asbury Park to Belmar, N.J., and painting in his basement. He died in 2012 during valve replacement surgery. Rudolph’s work is predominately abstract, created in oils on Masonite with occasional added paper and wax layering. He was favorably critiqued by the New York Times during the time he spent showing his work in New York City and northern New Jersey galleries. For more information, readers may call Mulberry Art Studios at 717-295-1949.

“We want to always provide that small glimmer of hope,” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America Lancaster County (MHALC). McDevitt noted that one of the organization’s main goals is to help prevent isolation among those in the county struggling with mental health issues and, by doing so, to prevent suicide. “(Gifts of Joy) is one of the things we do at Christmastime for those who have severe mental health issues,” McDevitt explained. Working with nearly 50 case managers with the Lancaster County Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, MHALC provided 800 gifts for 463 children and adults during the 2018 holiday season. “One of the things that is important is that people have that hope during the holidays from knowing that someone cares,” said McDevitt. MHALC is looking toward Christmas 2019 with hopes that more churches, youth groups, businesses, families, and other organizations and individuals will get involved in the Gifts of Joy program. MHA representatives will give individual or group donors a list of items a patient has requested. Many requests are for items that meet basic needs such as batteries, socks, or a phone charger. Charlotte Leckow, marketing coordinator with MHALC, noted that for those fighting mental health issues, loneliness is often a
problem. “Mental health (issues) can be very isolating,” remarked Leckow, adding that patients may have lost supporting relationships during the struggle. “(Patients) might not have that social connection to celebrate the holidays the way we might,” said Leckow. McDevitt agreed. “Many may feel forgotten,” she said. “It’s a time when you see so much depicting togetherness, family, friends, and holiday parties.” McDevitt said that the holidays are a time when many residents are
looking for ways to give. “At Christmas, the community is especially generous,” she said. “So many of us are full of gratitude, and we want to give back. This is an opportunity for people to support (other members of the community).” MHALC provides services to area residents struggling with mental illness issues and their families in three main areas - advocacy, support, and education. Advocacy services include suicide prevention programs, including a gunlock program and suicide
prevention training, peer mentorship, and child and family advocacy. Gretchen Gaudioso, client and family advocate with MHALC, provides Individual Education Program (IEP) advocacy and educates students on depression during mental health talks. Support programs include Compeer Lancaster, Community Support Programs, and other support groups, which Leckow noted provide socialization as well as help with specific problems. “Support groups are an alternative or supplement to counseling, where (patients) can talk to peers who are in the same situation,” said Leckow. Education services provided by MHALC include a wellness academy that features a variety of speakers, school-based training, and a partnership with Lancaster County Prison that helps connect inmates to support in prison and after they are released. MHALC strives to stop the progression of mental illness in individuals within the county. “We try to prevent people from coming to a desperate hopeless place,” said Leckow. “We are working for every counselor and service provider out there (to help connect patients with long-term support).” Readers who would like to learn more about MHALC may visit www.mhalancaster.org. Individuals and groups who wish to contribute to the Gifts of Joy program may call 717-397-7461 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.
