Bethesda UMC To Celebrate 175 Years During Homecoming By Dayna M. Reidenouer

When the congregation of Bethesda United Methodist Church (UMC) celebrated its 150th anniversary in 1993, a booklet summarizing its history was created. In it, the authors wrote, “The glory of Bethesda is not as a shrine, but as a live, growing church where the Gospel of Jesus Christ is being preached, where the Word of God is being taught to the rising generation of the community. May we remain steadfast and immovable in the ages to come.” Now, 25 years later, the church is once again celebrating the past and anticipating the future. “When you look back, you realize how fruitful it was back then and how it can be again,” observed longtime church member Pete Metzler. Church member Sidney Graver noted that “perseverance” is the defining characteristic of the small congregation that worships at 1086 Hilldale Road, Holtwood. A new sign on the north side of Holtwood Road (Route 372) points up the hill to the church campus. See Bethesda Homecoming pg 2

Bethesda United Methodist Church members are eagerly anticipating homecoming on Oct. 21. The special event will run nearly all day in celebration of the congregation’s 175th anniversary.

“There was a time when there were no younger folks in the congregation, so they started softball teams,” Graver recalled. The venture was successful, and at one point, the church fielded three teams as part of the Southern End Church Softball League, which had rules promoting church growth. “You had to attend church and not miss two Sundays in a row unless you were visiting another church, and then you had to bring in a bulletin as proof,” Graver said. Sickness and work were also approved excuses for missing Sunday services. “There is a trophy in (the church),” added church member Bonnie Berrier. That trophy, along with other memorabilia, will be displayed as part of the homecoming event the church will hold on Sunday, Oct. 21. Members of the softball teams will also be recognized during the afternoon’s festivities. The celebration will kick off at 10:45 a.m. with a worship service at which Bishop Peggy Johnson will preach. A luncheon afterward will feature desserts made from recipes beloved by Sunday school and junior church teachers and from the Rawlinsville Camp Meeting cookbook. Bethesda is a founding member of the camp meeting. A music and memories service will be held at 2 p.m. Favorite hymns will be sung, and current and past members will share their memories. the goal of Siloam Ethiopia has been to open a clinic offering free health care to people who live in poverty in the rural area where Ketema grew up. The couple plans to participate in the dedication ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 13; inventory all of the supplies that have been donated to the clinic; and negotiate laboratory testing services with a local hospital. “That would be a savings of $300 a month,” Ketema said, noting that using the hospital’s lab would mean Siloam Ethiopia

would not have to purchase an expensive complete blood count (CBC) machine. A CBC machine is still on the clinic’s punch list, just to be safe. Siloam Ethiopia would also like to obtain a blood chemistry machine, an autoclave, and a water purification system that would serve the entire clinic. A larger reservoir for water is also desired, as one of the services clinic workers have found themselves providing is access to bathing. It costs Siloam Ethiopia about $4 for each client visit. In the months since the clinic opened, the client base has been predominately female. “We primarily have seen women because women are inordinately affected by poverty,” board member Lindsey Teske said. “Ethiopia is one of six countries in the world that count for half of maternal mortality, and one out of every 64 mothers dies in childbirth.” She shared an additional statistic from the World Health Organization, reporting that in 2016, one out of every 21 babies died before their first birthday. “The good news is that rate has been getting better every year; it has been cut in half since 2010. Simple measures like prenatal vitamins and checkups make a big difference,” she said. Eventually, Siloam Ethiopia would like to make a difference in the lives of children by opening an orphanage to offer safe housing, education, and nutrition. “There are so many children in the streets,” Ketema remarked, noting that many youths have been orphaned due to AIDS. Siloam Ethiopia’s partner in Harar Emmanuel United Church - has already taken in several young girls. To support Siloam Ethiopia, readers may attend the banquet, sponsor or volunteer for the event by emailing Teske at teskela@ mail.com, or shop for items at the organization’s booth at the craft fair hosted by the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Ryan (left) and Nicole Heinaman (right) spoke about their son Tyler Heinaman (center), who was born with a heart June 2012 and seemed to be defect and underwent surgery healthy and normal. The Heina- to correct the problem. mans followed up with the pediatric cardiologist two weeks later for testing. This time, doctors could see what was wrong with Tyler’s heart. Tyler was born with a condition called coarctation of the aorta, a narrowing of the blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. His heart defect was severe, and he needed surgery to correct it right away. He was flown to Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., where he received surgery five days later. Tyler will still need to be monitored by cardiologists to ensure that the surgical repairs adapt to his growing heart and body, but today he can live a normal life with no restrictions. At the Heart Walk, Tyler and his family led the walkers out of the stadium to kick off the walk. Walkers returned to the stadium to learn the winners of second annual bicycle giveaway drawing

sponsored by UPMC Pinnacle, featuring 12 bikes donated by the hospital’s physicians, staff and teams. The walk was preceded by a high-energy warmup led by Wayne Mutata. Dollars raised will support heart disease and stroke research, health care quality improvement, advocacy, prevention and education. More than 1,500 walkers turned out for the 2018 Lancaster Heart Walk at the Barnstormers’ home stadium in downtown Lancaster on Sept. 15. Participants raised a total of $248,000 for the American Heart Association, a voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The fundraising total is expected to climb as additional donations are accepted until November. Before departing on the walk through the city and the Franklin & Marshall College campus, walkers had the opportunity to learn about heart health, receive free blood pressure screenings, try out the new American Heart Association blood pressure kiosk sponsored by the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation located at the stadium, learn hands-only CPR, try healthy snacks, and take photos at a photo booth. Local news anchor and master of ceremonies Susan Shapiro and Heart Walk chair Carrie Willets, president of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital, welcomed walkers during the opening ceremonies and introduced the Heinaman family of West Hempfield Township. Ryan and Nicole Heinaman shared the story of their 6-year-old son’s heart defect diagnosis. Ryan and Nicole expected to receive great news about their healthy baby boy during their 20week ultrasound. When doctors discovered that the baby had a twovessel cord, they suggested that the Heinamans get more frequent ultrasounds. During an ultrasound at seven months, doctors detected something wrong with their baby’s heart and referred them for additional testing by a pediatric cardiologist. The results were inconclusive, but doctors wanted to follow up after the baby was born. Tyler Heinaman was born in

“The public seems to enjoy it,” commented MOPW member Nancy Harnish. “It’s a good meal for a reasonable price, and if you’re still hungry, you can go up and get more.” Separate prices have been set for children ages 4 to 12 and adults, with admission payable at the door. Children under 4 may dine free of charge. A drivethrough line will be open for those who wish to purchase takeouts. The take-home containers will include turkey breast, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, corn, pepper cabbage, a roll and butter, and pie. Those dining in will be treated to all they care to eat of the takeout menu, with the addition of cranberry sauce and coffee. To prepare for the meal, the MOPW has ordered 400 pounds of turkey breast, 16 heads of cabbage, and 200 pounds of potatoes. MOPW members will peel all of those potatoes by hand. “It’s more fun to get together and peel them, even though it drives us crazy,” said MOPW member Shirley Miller. Church members will provide

homemade and store-bought pies. The corn was grown on the Frackman farm by Deb Hoover and her family, and it was cut and frozen by Miller. The one change this year will be the use of bread cubes for the stuffing. Miller explained that Shirley Girvin’s daughter used to have access to day-old bread that MOPW members would break down for the dish, but that is no longer available, so the group has ordered dozens of bags of pre-cubed bread from a local supermarket. On the day of the supper, men from the church will join MOPW members in the kitchen to lift and carry heavy pans of food. “Everybody pitches in,” remarked MOPW member Linda Farmer. The turkey supper is the MOPW’s biggest fundraiser. Its proceeds support the group’s efforts to bless local people in need. The meal also serves another significant purpose. “We get (the public) ready for Thanksgiving,” Miller said. For more information about the turkey supper, readers may call Miller at 717-786-3690.

$5/DAY

Mom’s House of Lancaster has received a $40,000 grant from the Arconic Foundation. Mom’s House enters its 28th year serving Lancaster County, specifically through offering child care services, educational support, and life skills support to single parents who desire to continue and complete their education. The recent contribution will allow Mom’s House to provide quality care to help single-parent families move out of poverty and onto a path toward long-term

economic stability. The funds will go toward furthering both Mom’s House’s child care and parent programs. Mom’s House offers accredited child care programs that allow children from 6 weeks old to 6 years old the opportunity to have an individualized curriculum. The organization also provides single parents with workshops, resources, and support to become better parents, professionals and community members.

Foundation Awards Academic Grants The Solanco Education Foundation (SEF) has awarded 11 academic venture grants totaling more than $5,000 that will enable teachers and educators to provide new educational programs and tools for students in Solanco schools. The SEF announced the availability of the grants in January, and applications were reviewed by the foundation’s Academic Venture Grant Committee. Solanco High School science teachers Leslie McRobbie and Caley Roark received funding for tech bundles to support AP Capstone students. Advanced Placement (AP) Seminar and AP Research students are required to present and orally defend their work as part of their AP score, and this must be recorded for the AP College Board. The technology bundles include multiple pieces of equipment that will enable AP Capstone students to create professional presentations. High school technology education teachers Todd Brown and Mike Minchhoff received a grant for the Penn State University and U.S. Navy Seal STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Competition. The grant will purchase computers, programming units, power supplies, and other materials students need to participate in the annual Sea, Air, and Land High School STEM Challenge coordinated by Penn State University and the U.S. Navy. High school family consumer science teacher Christine Sawicki received funding to provide students in the family consumer science class with food chemistry and nutrition lab investigation kits and workbooks. Students will use them to analyze food content and explore how food affects the human body and provides nourishment. The purpose of this STEM activity is to help students develop stronger math and science skills. George A. Smith Middle School learning support teacher Allyson Pruskowski received a grant that will purchase two

“Up” stools that will enable students to work while twisting and turning in their seats. The stools will especially benefit students who need support pertaining to attention and focus. Clermont Elementary School kindergarten teacher Ashlee Kreider received funding for a classroom carpet that will provide kindergarten students with their own comfortable space each morning to learn new sight words, work in small groups during tier time, and learn addition and subtraction. Quarryville Elementary School learning support teacher Marisa Sponhouse received a grant to purchase stools for students with attention and focus needs. The stools will provide sensory stimulation and movement, which may increase the students’ focus, time on task, and completion of independent work. Quarryville Elementary reading teacher Jessica Misel received funding to provide balance balls and scoop rockers that enable students to safely move in their seats while learning, increasing their comfort and their ability to better focus. Quarryville Elementary speech therapist Kayla Resh received a grant to provide access to the SLPnow website that features literacy-themed lessons and an organizational tool to track student progress. Quarryville Elementary kindergarten teacher Emily Miller received funding to purchase kits that provide students with STEM activities in order to improve their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Providence Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Lindsey Orr received a grant that will provide an educational robotic kit that enables students to create and build robots through fifth-grade curriculum aligned to science, technology, and math standards. Providence Elementary kindergarten teacher Elise Graybill received funding to purchase blocks, magna tiles, Legos, an easel, a puppet theater, and puppets that will engage students in hands-on engagement opportunities when they arrive to class and during indoor recess.

Prima plans to offer multiple series of events, including MainStage and Altro (concert) Series, as well as musically focused film. In addition to Prima programming, the venue will also be a unique venue for business and personal special events. With a grand opening concert production of Piano Men, which will run from Friday, Dec. 7, to Saturday, Dec. 15, Prima will begin offering more performance dates and variety in programming in a wellequipped venue. In order to utilize this new community resource to its fullest potential, a three-year, $3.2 million effort has begun called FWD, launching forward Prima’s new home. Nearly half of the funds to be raised ($1.57 million) have been committed thus far for renovations, lease, and operational growth. Contributions are now being sought for investments in furthering the Prima experience for the Lancaster community. Gifts to FWD will expand artistic programming and support artists, including student internships and local performers. Prima launched the announcement of the new venue with a music video. When organizers of the Friendship Community 2018 fall banquet were searching for a keynote speaker, one staff member remembered that a friend of hers had heard “Chewbacca Mom” speak. “(The friend had) said, ‘This person is great, and she has a great message,’” recalled Kyle Gamble, marketing assistant at Friendship Community. “We were looking for someone to bring laughter and joy with a faith background,” added Gamble, noting, “This is a speaker (who) will be different from those we have had in the past.” Candace Payne, also known as “Chewbacca Mom,” filled the bill for Friendship organizers, who have engaged her to speak at the annual Friendship Community banquet on Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Payne, of Grand Prairie, Texas, a wife and a mother of two, was shopping one day when she came across a mask depicting the hairy character from the “Star Wars” movies. “She bought it and put it on, and she (made a video and posted it to social media),” relayed Gamble. “She lost control and started laughing, and it took off from there.” According to some estimates, Payne’s video has been viewed more than 200 million times. Payne, who is a Christian and an Ouachita Baptist University alumna, began making the rounds on television shows, and she began speaking about the subject of simple joys. “(Payne) focuses on the simple joys in life, how to achieve them and what she does to bring about simple joys,” said Gamble. “(Her speech is) about appreciating all the moments in life.” Payne also began writing about her experience, and she is now the author of two books: “Laugh It Up” and the recently released “Simple Joys.” She is also the creator of the small group curriculum “Defiant Joy” study guide. In addition to the keynote speaker, Friendship will present two annual awards at the banquet. The Haverstick Award will be given to a Friendship client who has shown growth in giving back to the community, overcoming significant obstacles, and surpassed previous capabilities. The Gochnauer Award will be

Since its genesis in 2010, Prima, a contemporary theater organization in Lancaster, has performed at more than a dozen venues across Lancaster County. Being nomadic has limited performance dates, consumed nearly one-third of the organization’s annual budget, and depleted nearly 40 percent of staff time, while also inconveniencing audiences. To address this challenge, Carol Culliton of the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, as well as Sequinox, has made visionary investments toward Prima acquiring a home in the western part of Lancaster city. Formerly known as the Hamilton Ballroom, the new Prima venue, located at 941 Wheatland Ave. in Lancaster, offers 125 free parking spaces with a 200-person capacity. The space will offer flexible seating and staging arrangements, including in-the-round, thrust, and proscenium setups. With the design and construction leadership of TONO Group, Prima’s new home is undergoing a transformation to become a contemporary destination for theater, music, film, and special events. Prima will be situated for complete hospitality services with a full kitchen. Illuminated Integration is installing state-of-the-art audio, video,

build a new pediatric inpatient center at Lancaster General Hospital. The new center will open in August 2019 to all children in the community who need medical care, regardless of their family’s ability to pay. The event was highlighted by special guest and motivational speaker Dr. Dennis Denenberg. He began his remarks by naming Barshinger the First Lady of Philanthropy of Lancaster. Through personal stories and comparisons with historical heroes, he highlighted Barshinger’s heroic virtues, including doing good deeds for others, making a difference in the world, and teaching others values. Stoeckle presented a check to Barshinger, who in turn presented it to the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic. Dr. Rusty Long, executive director emeritus of the clinic, thanked Barshinger and the Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area for their long-term financial support. Rodger Weaver gave a testimonial on how his daughter Keturah received high-quality care at Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic.

The Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area honored Ann B. Barshinger with its first Kiwanis Heroes Award on Aug. 28 at the Willow Valley Lakes auditorium. The event was attended by Kiwanis members, family members, friends, and representatives of organizations and agencies that Barshinger has supported. Kiwanis is an international organization with the mission of supporting children everywhere. Through the Kiwanis Heroes program, the Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area recognizes persons in the region who have been exemplary in their assistance of children. Alan Stoeckle, president of Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area and master of ceremonies, described Barshinger, a Lancaster philanthropist, as a generous supporter of many organizations and agencies, including numerous groups that serve children. Among these are the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club, Aaron’s Acres, and VisionCorps. Stoeckle also mentioned that Barshinger recently contributed to the campaign to

Golden Mule Gridders Thump McCaskey by Mona Steinhauer

After heartbreaking losses to both CV and Elizabethtown, the Mules righted the ship this past Friday night, getting everyone involved in a 64-10 thumping over a 1-6 McCaskey squad. This was only the second time the two teams met. McCaskey won the first meeting 33-12 in a District 3 AAAA semifinal in 1991. “The defense executed the things they didn’t the last two weeks,” said head coach Tony Cox. “They did what they were coached and not their own thing. They knocked receivers off the pass and picked up three interceptions (Cole Lewis, Zed Baker, and Sam Buckwalter). “Football is like life,” he added. “You’re going to face adversity, and we did these two previous weeks, but the kids stayed positive and worked hard. They were focused this week.”

Nafis Moore piled up 210 all-purpose yards. He rushed for 140 yards on 8 carries and a touchdown and returned a kickoff 70 yards to set up another score. Joel McGuire rushed 87 yards on 8 carries, scored two touchdowns and connected on 2-of-4 passes for another 51 yards. Shaneef Carter also scored a pair of TD’s, rushing 94 yards on 13 carries. A Lewis 7-yard scamper pushed the first quarter lead to 21-0, while an 11-yard strike from McGuire to Michael Grech kick started a 24-7 second quarter run and extended the lead to 42-7 at the half. Moore scored in the third quarter and freshman Zach Turpen and sophomore Ronnie Fulton chipped in with fourth quarter TD’s to pad the lead. “We only had one turnover,” noted Cox. “But it led to their only TD of the night.” The Mules rushed for 360 yards

with 186 of them coming in the first quarter. FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team keeps working hard to pad their win column but the going hasn’t been easy. Last Monday they hosted the third place team in Section Two and were dealt a 6-0 setback by Garden Spot. The Spartans improved to 9-4-1 overall and are working on their first winning record in three years. Wednesday they faced the undefeated Indians of Donegal and settled for a 14-1 defeat. The Indians have only given up 15 goals to date and two of them have been to Solanco. They capped the week with a disappointing 12-0 loss on the turf at Lampeter-Strasburg on Friday. The Mares dropped a 7-0 result to the Pioneers on their grass field on Sept. 17. Despite falling behind 5-0 to Garden Spot in the first half, the Mares regrouped after the break, giving up just one goal while pressing to their

offensive end with two corners and three shots on goal. Wednesday’s outing was no easier as Solanco faced a Donegal team that has rolled over its opponents, scoring 134 total goals through 14 games. The Indians’ lopsided win over Solanco featured a pair of milestones as Lily Saunders scored her 100th career goal while Mackenzie Allessie hit the 300 mark. Keirra Laird, assisted by Mariah Stoltzfus, broke up Donegal’s shutout bid with a first half goal. Alta Brandenberger was busy in goal, collecting 15 saves while Kaley Wilson added two. In Lampeter, the Mares struggled to slow the speedy Pioneers and were dealt their second shutout of the week. Against an offense that put out 24 shots on goal, Kimmy Beacham recorded 10 saves with Brandenberger grabbing two. The two combined for nine saves against Garden Spot.

CROSS COUNTRY The harrier teams competed on the tough Lancaster County course last Tuesday, McCaskey’s home course, and failed to pick up a win. Despite a team best fifth place effort from Ben Stickler (18:03), the Mules fell to two of the top three teams in the section, 18-47 against both McCaskey and Hempfield. Aubree Roop was the top

finisher for the girls, grabbing 12th place in 24:13. But the Mares also fell short, 18-40 to McCaskey and 15-55 against Hempfield. “It’s not always about the scoreboard,” said head coach Craig Ausel. “It’s a tough course but all the teams responded well. The team works hard and we get the most from our talent and the work we put in.

“The boys played a solid game, holding them to just three goals for the second time this season,” said head coach James Snyder. “Better passing and tighter defense helped in the effort.” Wednesday afternoon the boys dropped a 5-0 result against Lancaster Mennonite (7-1), the second place

“Unforced errors prevented us from taking the lead in the fourth set,” recalled head coach Meghan Cross, “and it’s always a challenge to come back from two games down.” The Bears, with their sights on playoffs, served up six aces on the night and used a 10 kill attack from Sydney Stewart to spark a 25-14, 25-13, 25-8 win on the road. Solanco got a strong game from both McClune and Molinarez who both recorded three kills and one ace in the loss. Emma Canale dished out 7 aces, Ewing put up a pair of blocks and Langley hustled for 10 digs. On the road Thursday, the Mares avenged a 3-2 loss to Lebanon, back on Sept. 11, with a 3-2 thriller and their first section win! Solanco pulled out a 26-24 first set win, but dropped the next two, 19-25, 23-25 before regrouping with a 25-20 fourth set and securing the win with a 15-9 final set. “This was our best match of the season yet!” exclaimed Cross. “Despite the unforced errors, we regained focus and pulled out the win. “Emma had a phenomenal game at the net, finishing with 7 kills and giving her hitters some beautiful sets (9 assists) to send back over the net,” continued Cross. “Kara was on fire with her serve and recorded 9 aces and Emma Urbine was a machine on the court, moving and covering and making saves everywhere.” Langley led the way with 20 digs with McClune adding a dozen, Davis chipped in with 7 assists and Ewing put up a pair of blocks to add to the total team victory. GIRLS’ SOCCER Facing the top three teams in Section

Three last week no easy task but the Mares buckled down and got to work. Monday’s 3-0 loss to Cocalico (6-6-2 overall) was closer than the score might appear. The Eagles held a slim 10-9 edge in shots on goal and led 4-1 in corners. “We played hard but struggled to finish despite some really good chances,” said head coach Ken Yoder. “The difference was that Cocalico finished just about all of their chances. “We lost to them 1-0 in overtime the first time around but I felt we played a much more even game this time,” he added. Wednesday the Mares hosted second place Lancaster Mennonite (6-2) for Senior Night and were dealt a gutwrenching 2-1 loss in overtime. After pretty much controlling the first half and settling for a 0-0 tie at the break, Solanco jumped in front when Grace Kreider delivered a perfect corner kick to Alana Yoder whose header found the back of the net. Unfortunately, the Blazers matched that effort five minutes later. Both teams challenged through regulation and one overtime period before the visitors finished a shot in the box with just two minutes gone in the second OT period to pull out the win. “I really thought we won in the first overtime,” said Yoder. “Alana headed another shot that looked like it was going in but was just wide. Our girls outplayed them and played great,” he added. “We lost to them by one earlier in the season as well. “Again, not capitalizing on our chances proves to be a deciding factor in these close games against the better opponents,” Yoder explained. “We have been connecting passes and building on our attack in the

second half of the season but the final piece of finishing in front of the net, against good teams, has proven tricky.” Seniors honored before the game included Reece Curry-Saner, Grace Kreider, Rachel McLaren and Diana Quintino. The undefeated Elco Raiders swept the series against the Mares, posting a 3-0 final in Quarryville on Friday. After a scoreless first half, the visitors, with a 20 shot advantage, needed 15 minutes in the second half to go in front. They scored all of their goals in a span of 14 minutes. Gabi Dolan recorded 21 saves on the day, five more than in the Cocalico and LMH games combined. TENNIS The tennis team competed in the L-L League Flight Tournament last week but failed to move into second round action. Kerith Paine faced 5th seed Scotland Reynolds, of Manheim Township, and lost 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1. Playing No. 2, Faith Redcay bowed out with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Cocalico’s Kassie Nichols while Elsie Zaborskiy put up the best numbers of the day in a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Warwick’s Selena Orta at No. 4 In doubles action, Paine and Redcay took on 4th seed Reynolds and Nichole Honrade, of Township, and were shut out. At No. 2, Gabby Griffonetti and Zaborskiy put up a good fight before falling short 8-5 to McCaskey’s Rachel Graham and Sarah Barnes. Griffonetti had defeated Barnes in Solanco’s 4-3 thriller over the Red Tornados back on August 29. Last but not least, Sophia Baker and Erin Dobinson teamed for an 8-2 loss at No. 3 doubles against Erin Fleurant and Chloe Long.

“Ben ran well with the leaders,” he continued. “And Avery is not afraid to compete and did a fantastic job. We did have four runners sitting out today.” Avery Jacobsen scored a 14th place finish in 19:15, right on the tails of Hempfield’s fifth and sixth runners. Colin Althoff (25th, 20:54), Tate Fisher (27th, 20:57) and Nathan Eller (28th, 21:04) rounded out the top five with Jose Serrano (29th), Aidan McBride (30th), Ryan Vanover (32nd) and Angel Daniel (34th) following in a pack. Chesley Ledesma (16th, 24:52) and Halle Brown (19th, 25:14) cracked the top 20 with Sarah Snyder (25th, 26:12), Hannah Wheeler (29th, 26:31) and Evelyn Billings (32nd, 27:47) rounding out the Solanco lineup. “Aubree, Chesley and Hallle fought hard early in the race but were separated in the last mile,” Ausel said. BOYS’ SOCCER While the boys’ soccer team is not preparing for the playoffs, they are in fact working hard to move Solanco’s program in the right direction. The Mules opened the week with a 3-0 loss to Cocalico, the fourth ranked team in 3A who secured its fifth straight shutout, on Monday.

team in Section Three. “We lost our game at times and LMH capitalized,” said Snyder. “The team is working the ball better than they have in years past and have put a great deal of effort into helping rebuild the program from the junior high up. “The boys are playing better soccer than they have in the past two or three seasons,” he added. “The final scores are not indicative of how they perform on the field. We are working toward strengthening the program, getting better skilled and becoming more competitive.” Friday the Mules gave up a second half, own goal to Elco and dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker. VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team went 1-2 last week, suffering a hard-fought 3-2 loss to Oxford on Monday before coming back with a 3-0 loss to second place Elizabethtown (7-1) on Tuesday. The Mares capped the week with their first league win of the season, 3-2 over Lebanon on Friday. Despite a strong presence at the net that featured 19 kills, Oxford rallied to beat the Mares. Solanco, behind Kara McClune’s 7 aces, took the first two sets 25-18, 25-23 before the Hornets stung back, taking the next three 25-20, 25-14, 15-12. McClune also led the way with 9 kills with Georgia Ewing and Nathaly Molinarz putting down 5 each thanks to the setting of Madi Davis (18 assists). McClune was busy in the back row as well, recording 11 digs along with Alondra Quinonez but it was Bri Langley that topped that stat with 16. Ewing and Urbine added 3 blocks each.

Tracey Strohecker, Annie Friedrichs, and other members of the Lancaster Christian Women’s Club first heard of a Stonecroft Ministries event called Story Marks two years ago, and the women were intrigued. “Story Marks (is about) women and the stories behind their tattoos,” explained Strohecker. “It will be a one-night gallery experience featuring photographs of local women and the stories of their hearts.” On Thursday, Oct. 18, area women are invited to the Barn at Overlook Commons, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to view the photos of up to 30 local women and to hear the testimonies of up to 10 women and how their tattoos are an expression of their Christian journeys. Light fare will be served. The photographs that will be displayed were taken by photographer Sally Krueger, who donated the photo sessions to the event and who will gift them to those who volunteered to be photographed. Friedrichs said that at the heart of the event is a passion to reach young women who do not know Jesus. “This is about meeting a girl where she is and as she is with support and encouragement,” said Friedrichs. For Strohecker, the 24 months since she first heard of Story Marks has represented a personal journey that highlights a significant change in her outlook. When she first heard of Story Marks, she was skeptical of the idea.

Renee Heller is one of up to 30 women whose photographs will be on display at Story Marks, an exhibit that will explore the stories of women whose tattoos have played an important part in their spiritual lives. The event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Barn at Overlook Commons, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, beginning at 6:30 p.m. “The Lord began to work in my heart about being judgmental,” said Strohecker, who said that a sermon her pastor preached in the fall of 2017 on the subject of prejudices also affected her. “The Lord really spoke to me,” said Strohecker, who remembered Story Marks at that time. “I felt so convicted and passionate about this,” she added, noting that during a February vacation to Florida she decided to get a tattoo of two intertwining hearts and the words “Endless Love” to honor her marriage of more than 50 years. The transformation of Strohecker’s viewpoint has given her greater understanding for the reasons many women have tattoos. “I always thought it was about rebellion,” said Strohecker. “That was my perception. Once I understood there is a story behind them, I could see there’s a significant meaning.” One goal of the event is to convey the message that tattoos are more than skin deep. “When you put something permanently on your body, it’s not on your body, it’s on your heart,” said Friedrichs. “It’s tattooed on to who you are.” Another aim is to break down stereotypes and focus on the universal. “We want to literally share our stories to support and encourage one another,” explained Friedrichs. “We are coming together as sisters to share the love of Christ with a sense of community.” She hopes to change perceptions in the process. “This is about women loving and needing each other (because) we were put in this world to help each other and reach out to each other,” she said. “There’s no judgment or criticism (because) we all need Jesus.” Other members of the Stonecroft Ministries Lancaster Christian Women’s Club hub who are organizing the event include Linda Johnston, Rebekah Christens-Persaud, Marlene Hall, and Joleen Yunginger. There is a nominal cost to attend the event. Readers who would like to attend may register at https://story-marks-lancaster .eventbrite.com. Individuals who have questions about the event may call 717-701-9767.

Since that time, the group, one of the nation’s oldest continuous musical ensembles, has traveled the world playing brass pieces. The band has worked with and produced numerous musical acts. Both Philip Smith, former principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic, and Stephen Bulla, chief arranger for the U.S. Marine Band, are counted as NYSB alumni. The band has premiered pieces from composers including Eric Ball, Erik Leidzen, and James Curnow, and it has worked with composers such as Emil Soderstrom, Wilfred Heaton, and Emmy Award-winning Bruce Broughton. Race day check-in and registration will open at 6:30 a.m. Interested individuals may register at www.pretzelcitysports.com/onlin e-registration through Wednesday, Nov. 7. Post-race festivities, as well as the Kids’ Chesty’s Challenge Fun Race, will take place at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, located near the 5K finish line. A disc jockey will play music, and

free snacks and beverages will be available to participants. A shuttle bus service will be available at Columbia Crossing to transport runners back to CHS for their vehicles after the race. Organizers will also offer a free baggage claim service so participants may check a bag or clothing item before the race that they would like to have waiting for them at the finish line. Children ages 3 to 12 may take part in the quarter-mile Chesty’s Challenge Fun Race, named after the Marine Corps’ bulldog mascot. Race-day registration will open at 7:30 a.m. at Columbia Crossing, and the run will take off at 9 a.m. Those who register online by Oct. 15 will receive a Tshirt, medal, and goodie bag.
