Fall fundraiser and festivities planned at library BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
he Friends of the Quarryville Library will host a chicken barbecue fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Quarryville Library Center, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. Tickets are available to purchase in advance at the front desk, and each ticket will include a barbecued half-chicken, a bag of potato chips and a bottle of water. A limited number of tickets will be sold on the day of the event while supplies last, and prepurchased meals must be picked up by noon. Every year, members of the Wakefield Lions Club volunteer to assist with the barbecue by setting up a tent outside the library to cook the meals. The rain-or-shine fundraiser will also include a book sale and yard sale inside the library. A variety of items and used books donated by members of the community will be available to purchase during the sale. The funds raised by the annual barbecue, book sale and yard sale

will help the library cover its operating costs and general expenses. Additionally, the proceeds will support programs that the library offers to the community. The Quarryville Library recently updated its calendar with multiple events and activities that it will offer this fall. The library’s Walking Book Club will meet Thursday, Oct. 19, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Enola Low Grade Trail entrance located at 301 E. State St., Quarryville. Participants will convene to discuss “The Marriage Portrait” by Maggie O’Farrell, a historical fiction novel based on the story of an Italian noble placed in an arranged marriage in the late 16th century. The club was created in March by the Quarryville Library’s program manager, Sharon Roche. “It was personal for me; I need to get more time outside and I like to read, walk and talk to people,” Roche said. “I figured there would be others who felt the same way, and sure enough there were.” Roche organizes the program on a monthly basis, and she selects See Library fundraiser pg 3

The National Museum of African American History and Culture recognizes Madeline Anderson as the first African American woman to direct a televised documentary film. Anderson and her work are credited with paving the way for black women in the television industry, but many Lancaster residents may be unaware that she also grew up in Lancaster city. The
renowned filmmaker is an alumna of McCaskey High School and Millersville University, and she went on to achieve national acclaim in her career. On Sept. 23, LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, held a film screening of two documentaries directed by Anderson. The first film, titled “Integration Report One,” was released in 1960, and it depicts the battle for racial equality in various cities across the See Filmmaker pg 2

Range will accept donations for Charlie’s Crusaders Pet Rescue. Eligible donations will include laundry detergent packs, disinfecting wipes, fabric softener, dish soap, garbage bags, blankets, dog food, towels and other items for canines. On Saturday, Dec. 2, Charlie’s Crusaders will have adoptable dogs at the range and offer information on its mission. Morr Range has held an annual drive for more than five years. Previously, the range hosted a one-day event to collect donations and to give out prizes to participants. After the COVID-19 pandemic, the range changed the format of the drive to a collection period that lasted three
months; it decided to return to the longer collection period as it resulted in a higher amount of donations. Tracy Fornwalt, part owner of Morr Range and SNM board member, created the drive to benefit the southern Lancaster County community, where she has lived her whole life. “My partner and I were born and raised in the area, and we’re committed to giving back and being a valuable member of the community,” Fornwalt said. “Starting the drive was an easy decision, and our community has been fantastic.” To view the full list of requested donations, visit search for “Morr Indoor Range and Training Center” on Facebook.

Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, kicked off its autumn schedule with the opening two exhibits on Sept. 17. Opening receptions were held for the fall membership show in the Kauffman Gallery and a showcase from Isabel W. Lark in the Steinmetz Gallery. Both exhibits will be displayed during LCAA’s regular hours of 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays through Saturdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays until Thursday, Oct. 19. The membership show highlights artwork by LCAA members, and it incorporates pieces that use a variety of mediums and themes. Each creation will be judged in the professional and nonprofessional categories, and awards will be given out for first, sec-
ond and third places as well as an honorable mention. One watercolor painting in the exhibit will be chosen to receive the Myrtle Tremblay Award. Lark’s display contains a collection of pastel paintings titled “Painting With Dust.” Although Lark’s previous work primarily focused on scenic imagery, she adopted a fascination with pastels after taking lessons from fellow LCAA member and expert pastel painter Dot Stepenaski. “Painting With Dust” will feature Lark’s recent work, which she created to explore her new favorite medium’s dynamic with viewers. On Sunday, Oct. 29, LCAA will have an opening reception for The Great Pumpkin Challenge, a new event that will serve as a fundraiser for

The loss of a baby affects a family for a lifetime, and care and support are needed well beyond the immediate time of loss. People who provide that care, whether in a professional or personal capacity, can benefit from attending “A Journey of a Lifetime,” an inperson perinatal conference sponsored by Share of Lancaster. 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster. It will present information for people in the medical field as well as therapists and others who have touched the lives of families that have lost a baby. “It’s been a while since Share had an in-person conference like this one,” said Dr. Serena Wu, who is a maternal fetal medicine physician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the executive director of Share. “To have a conference that is pulling in nationally recognized speakers on this subject matter is unique.” Highlights of the “Journey of a Lifetime” conference will include morning keynote
speaker Dr. Robert Silver of University of Utah, who has spent more than 20 years researching stillbirth and pregnancy loss. Afternoon sessions and speakers will feature a keynote address by Joanna Cole of CHOP, who has developed perinatal palliative and bereavement care programs. “The first half of the day will focus on the medical realm, and the second half will concentrate of the psychosocial realm,” Wu explained. A variety of panels will be featured, led by experts in the field. The conference is open to anyone who provides care or is affected by pregnancy loss, she noted, adding that it also
provides continuing education credit for healthcare workers. “Part of Share of Lancaster’s mission is education and to bring awareness,” Wu said. “October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, so it’s timed with that. The theme is ‘Past, Present and Future’: Where have we been? Where are we now, and where are we going?” Founded more than 40 years ago by a bereaved mother in Lancaster and two nurses, Share of Lancaster helps parents and families deal with the death of an infant from miscarriage, pregnancy complications, stillbirth, SIDS or other causes. “We want people to know See Pregnancy loss pg 12

Retired pilot establishes scholarship for aviation students In 1975, he began his 44-year corporate flying career, which included piloting turboprops, helicopters, and large corporate jets. For the last 23 years of his career, Rummel flew a Bombardier Global Express for Paramount Pictures and the CBS Corporation, traveling to locations worldwide. Rummel retired in 2019, but he still had a passion for aviation and flying. One day he attempted to rent a plane from Aero-Tech Services Inc., but he discovered that all of the company’s aircraft were booked weeks in advance. It was then that he learned that Aero-Tech was partnered with EMU for its flight program. When Rummel learned that EMU did not have a scholarship program for its young aviators, he started one. The scholarship is available to students entering their junior year and working toward a commercial pilot certificate. Recently, the scholarship committee named Griffin Sny-
der as the first recipient of the Robert J. Rummel scholarship. Snyder, from New Holland, will receive $5,000. He has already obtained his private, instrument, and commercial ratings and will use the scholarship to pursue his multi-engine rating and flight instructor certificates. The scholarship award ceremony will take place during EMU’s Aviation Open House on Thursday, Nov. 2, which is open to the public. The event will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Aero-Tech Services’ facility at Lancaster Airport on Airport Road in Lititz. To learn more and register, visit www.emu.edu/aviation.
EMU’s collegiate aviation program operates under Part 141 regulations and offers reduced airline transport pilot (ATP) certification requirements. Graduates of the program are eligible for 1,000 hours toward their ATP license instead of the standard 1,500 hours. Through EMU’s program, students earn their private, instrument, commercial with multi-engine rating, and flight instructor certificates. Additionally, they can participate in regional airline cadet and pilot preparation programs. Recruitment for the fall International Ministries 2024 cohort is underway, with information available at the BANQUET& & SINGSPIRATION SINGSPIRATION BANQUET aforementioned website. Tuesday, October 31 - at 5:30 PM R100786
Robert J. Rummel, a recently retired professional pilot, has collaborated with the Lancaster campus of Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) to establish an aviation scholarship for students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in leadership and organizational management (LOM) with an aviation concentration. The scholarship’s purpose is to help aviation students achieve their goals. Rummel’s extensive experience in the aviation industry will provide an opportunity for EMU’s aviation students to receive mentorship and support from someone dedicated to giving back to his profession. Rummel was a corporate pilot before his retirement. He began his flight training at Lancaster Aviation Flight Academy when he was 20 years old in 1970, and by 1972, he had obtained his private, commercial, and flight instructor licenses. Rummel served as a full-time instructor at the academy for three years.
