Promise Players slate fall play he Promise Players theater group will offer a performance of “The One You Need” for its fall production at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, on Friday to Sunday, Nov. 3 through 5, and Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 9 through 12. The Thursday and Friday shows will be held at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays will have a 2:30 p.m. matinee and a 7:30 p.m. show, and Sundays will have a 5 p.m. show to close the weekend. “The One You Need” is a play written by Janette FrankfordBook, who has been a member of the Promise Players for more than 13 years. The production tells the story of Jan, a young woman who is taking care of her father after he is diagnosed with a terminal illness. As the father approaches the end of his life, his primary concern is making sure his daughter has a relationship with God. Jan opposes the faith
T
and only wishes to have her father in her life. The play explores the subject of grief as it follows the intense dynamic between the two main characters, but it also finds room for comedic scenarios as Jan struggles to be a graceful caregiver. Frankford-Book began writing “The One You Need” more than 10 years ago, and the fall production will be the play’s first time being performed for audiences. The story is inspired by FrankfordBook’s real-life experiences; nearly two decades ago, she acted as her ill father’s caregiver until his passing. The play incorporates characters such as Jan’s brothers, a local doctor and a funeral director, who are inspired by Frankford-Book’s own brothers and the individuals who helped her navigate her father’s death. Frankford-Book will play the leading role of Jan, and she is co-directing the production with Wayne Rhinier.
“Everyone can relate to this play. Everyone has suffered grief in some way,” Frankford-Book said. “It’s the story of a father wanting only the best for his kids, even in his last moments, but it also has some hilarious characters. It’s my way of paying homage to people across Lancaster County.” Doors will open one hour before each show, and general admission seating will be available on a firstcome, first-served basis. Adults may purchase tickets for a suggested minimum donation, and children age 12 and under may purchase tickets at a discounted price. Children may also pay for admission with the donation of a canned good, which Promise Players will donate to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank in Quarryville. To purchase tickets in advance, visit https://tinyurl.com/the1youneed or call the church office at 717-464-2050 during its regular operating hours of Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

A new era of homecoming customs Every year, the arrival of autumn signifies the return of numerous community traditions and the start of another school year. Amid discussions about the semester’s first homework assignments and elaborate plans for Halloween parties, many teenagers begin their quest to find a date to the homecoming dance. Corsages and boutonnieres fill gymnasiums across the country, and crowds flock to the bleachers for the annual football game, but nearly all schools have
their own unique methods of celebrating homecoming. This year, Solanco High School commenced its annual homecoming festivities by introducing a few new traditions to the community. Normally, Solanco High School crowns its homecoming queen during the football game, which this year was Oct. 13, and the king is crowned the following day at the annual dance. Members of the school’s Student Senate planned to shake things up this year by crowning the king at the powderpuff game. The game, which pits junior girls See Homecoming pg 5

The bond between humans and dogs is different from those that exist between any of God’s other creatures. Puppies with a Purpose harnesses that relationship and even puts it to the test. That’s kind of how dogs are wired. With a personality of a dog, it’s a two-way street. That’s why people bond with See Puppies pg 4

their pets. That’s why visually impaired people bond with their guide dogs.” During monthly meetings at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, members of Puppies with a Purpose and their foster dogs receive formal training centered around 10 basic commands. There are also two outings each month where members and their dogs can put some of the things they learned into practice. “We’re trying to expose the dogs to the different sights and sounds and smells that they would encounter as guide dogs,” said Cook. “We’re trying to teach them how to be polite puppies and get them used to everyday things.” Members of Puppies with a Purpose typically welcome their foster dogs into their homes at the age of seven weeks. The future guide dogs are usually either Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, German shepherds or
Labrador and golden retriever mixes. “It’s not like having a pet,” said Cook. “It’s training and teaching. You’re making a commitment to do a lot with the dogs. By teaching commands, we’re trying to get back to basics with the dogs. It’s everyday stuff that should help later on as they grow and mature.” There are more than 40 clubs like Lancaster Puppies with a Purpose serving The Seeing Eye in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, New York and Maryland. Founded in 1929 in Nashville, Tenn., The Seeing Eye moved to its current headquarters in Morristown in 1965, and currently about 1,550 people in the United States and Canada use guide dogs from The Seeing Eye. “Believe it or not, not all dogs want to be pets,” said Cook. “They want to work. They want to please people. The Seeing Eye breeds dogs with personalities that are

(the dog) that you’re going to give it back,” said Cook. “And you know (the dog) is going to be helping someone. You know the dog is going to allow someone who’s visually impaired this freedom. It’s very gratifying.” For additional information about The Seeing Eye, go to www.seeingeye.org.

Part sport, part entertainment, roller derby is a pursuit like few others. With all due respect to its popular past, a group of local women have resurrected roller derby in Manheim Township and have firmly placed their own updated stamp on it. They call themselves the Dutchland Derby Rollers. And they play their home bouts at the Overlook Activities Center’s roller skating rink, 301 Golf Drive, Lancaster. For spectators and participants alike, it’s about as much fun as anyone can have on roller skates. “It is a sport, but just like any other sport, there’s a level of entertainment to it,” said Miranda Boyd, a Roller who also serves as the marketing director for the team. “It’s physically demanding and wildly entertaining.” “People will say, ‘I saw this in the ’60s and ’70s when it was on TV,’” Boyd continued. “They have a concept of what it is, but they don’t know it exists, that it’s still happening, that it’s still a lively sport.” An organization of about 30 mainly Lancaster County residents, the Dutchland Derby Rollers compete in
One of the keys to the Dutchland Derby Rollers’ success is working as a team.
eight bouts a year against similar teams from the Northeast region of the country. Games are played by five players from each team on the rink or track at one time - a jammer and four blockers. Points are scored for each time a jammer laps an opposing blocker. Roller derby allows for a certain degree of physical contact, but rulebreakers are relegated to a penalty box, providing opponents with a strategic advantage on the track. “It’s huge, and the sport is
definitely in a revival period in Lancaster,” said Boyd. “We’re seeing a lot of new players joining roller derby. A lot of us are newer to the sport. I think in general this sport continues to evolve.” The members of the Dutchland Derby Rollers weren’t around during the sport’s heyday in the 1970s, when it was aired on television. Back then, part of roller derby’s entertainment value was linked to the drama and story lines surrounding the actual playing of bouts, as well as some of the
players’ colorful pseudonyms. Through their contrived names like Reaper Cussions, Bangarang Banshee, Terror Swift and Dash Katchum, the Dutchland Derby Rollers are paying tribute to the sport’s past. “(Pseudonyms are) something that’s always kind of been part of the sport,” said Boyd. “It’s kind of like a normal person by day and a roller derby personality at night. I think people would be shocked to learn who plays roller derby. See Derby Rollers pg 8

Homecoming from pg 1 against senior girls, was slated for Oct. 7 to kick off the start of spirit week. However, due to inclement weather, the powderpuff game was rescheduled for Oct. 17, and Austin Galbreath and Caroline Lantz were crowned homecoming king and queen, respectively, at the Oct. 13 football game. The Student Senate decided to change the day of the crowning to allow the homecoming king’s family members and friends outside the school to attend the ceremony; as the dance is a closed school event, only students are able to attend. As is tradition, the members of the homecoming court began to arrive at the stadium prior to the game’s crowning ceremony, but the candidates made an unusual entrance this year. Each couple was challenged to enter the stadium by any means other than walking, and the students devised creative alternatives that included a bicycle, a stroller and a wheelchair. The football game itself entailed a fierce match-up between the two teams, but the Golden Mules gained the upper hand in the
third quarter to seize a 48-27 win over the Daniel Boone Area High School Blazers. During the game, members of the Student Senate collected donations for Unite for HER, a nonprofit organization that provides gift boxes for those who are currently undergoing cancer treatment. The boxes include items such as special lotion to treat radiation burns and coupons for massage parlors. Prior to the football game, students showed their school pride by dressing up for spirit week, and each day of the week was assigned its own theme. The themes, which were selected by members of the Student Senate, included Country Club Tuesday, Barbie and Ken Wednesday and Soccer Mom and Barbecue Dad Thursday. On Friday, the student body was encouraged to wear black and gold to conclude spirit week. “The ultimate goal is to get more school spirit and community support around the high school,” said Carol Graybeal, adviser for the Student Senate. “We’re hoping we can continue the new traditions next year.”
