New Classroom, New Pastor BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

With a portion of Solanco middle and high school students attending school online this year, local pastors and other individuals recognized a need to ensure that students have access to safe places with reliable internet connections. Memorial United Methodist Church (UMC), 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville, served as the pilot location for the Solanco Community Learning Center (CLC). “It’s a partnered effort. Multiple organizations are working on it, said Memorial lead pastor Chris Eden. “This was developed with the intention that other churches could do this in their own spaces. Along with Memorial, the CLC includes Solanco Family Life Network, Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, Encounter Church, Wesley Network, Faith Reformed Presbyterian Church, Solid Rock Youth Ministries, Providence Church, and more. Organization representatives meet weekly via Zoom and are advised by school district representatives. “This is probably the most cooperative ministry I’ve ever been a part of, Eden enthused. “Everyone just wants to help the schools out. Memorial’s virtual classroom began operating on Sept. 16. It is open Mondays through Fridays from

7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students must provide their own electronic devices and bring their own lunches. Thoroughly vetted adults will supervise the classroom. There is space for 37 students positioned at least 6 feet apart. Eden noted that if a school shuts down for quarantine, the church will double capacity by locating students in other rooms in the building. Because space is limited, students must register to attend by visiting www.quarryville.church/clc. While Eden is currently supervising Memorial’s CLC program, he will soon turn it over to Eddie Adams, who began working as Memorial’s new youth pastor on Oct. 19. Adams grew up in Lancaster city and earned a degree in youth and young adult ministry from Lancaster Bible College. He previously worked for LCBC’s Hanover campus, but he and his wife, Caleigh, wanted to move back to Lancaster to be closer to family. “Marrying (Caleigh) was the best decision I ever made outside of trusting Jesus, Adams commented. Adams credited his mother for introducing him to the Christian faith, but he did not fully embrace it until high school, when his best friend invited him to attend LCBC’s Lancaster campus. Adams could have studied social work at a university on a partial track scholarship, but he opted to enroll at Lancaster Bible College instead. “I want students to know Jesus as Lord and

According to many travel polls, travelers are choosing small-town destinations for getaways and vacations. Not just now, because of COVID, but into the spring and summer of 2021. Fewer crowds, less traffic, unique culture, and friendly locals make visiting obscure locations more desirable than ever. As the editor of Where & When Pennsylvania, a publication of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), I quickly learned that many of us have little idea of what’s going on in our surrounding area, let alone across the commonwealth. That’s why we’re launching a new series in our community papers called EXPLORE Across Town, Across PA. Each month we’ll feature a town in our coverage area, as well as a destination somewhere in

ing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and dayto-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their

parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin

This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness. We’re fighting two health threats this season, so every little bit helps. One little shot can make a big difference.

along the Susquehanna. Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

Savior and to live life for Jesus,” Adams explained. Speaking on his second day at Memorial, Adams said he hopes to build relationships among the youths and adults in the congregation and then within the community. He wants to encourage adults to engage with young people in the community and help them find churches where they fit, even if that is not Memorial. Adams expressed excitement to be part of a community of pastors who care about students and work together to support each other even as they support youths and young adults. “We have technology (for building relationships) at our fingertips,” Adams said. “This season exposes a lot of what students need. They can’t be in their rooms alone. They’re hungry for connection, and they’re hungry for Jesus. If we provide authentic community, people will show up.” For more information about Memorial and its programs for young people, readers may call 717-786-2941 or email office@quarryville.church.

The proceeds from the event will support New Hope Community Life Ministry, 248-A Maple Ave., Quarryville. Executive director Deb Riddell shared that for a long time, the nonprofit counseling center has had an annual fall banquet that has traditionally taken the form of a dinner and a program. An offering was accepted to benefit New Hope. This year, the format of the banquet was changed to accommodate COVID-19 safety guidelines. Instead of a program, diners will receive a booklet with information about New Hope and the event sponsors. And rather than a freewill offering, a price has been set for the tickets. “Over 90% of the clients who are seen at New Hope receive financial assistance for their counseling sessions,” Riddell related. “Hardly anybody pays the full price, but New Hope always wants to continue to offer counseling, even when people can’t afford it. That’s where fundraisers come in.” The Community Closet thrift store, 128 TownsEdge Drive, Quarryville, generates revenue to support New Hope. WSUCC Sets Food Drive, Giveaways Feeding the hungry is one way that Willow Street United Church of Christ (WSUCC) members endeavor to live out the love of Jesus Christ. For several years, the congregation hosted monthly community meals free of charge until interrupted by the coronavirus shutdown. The meals restarted several months ago in the form of Hands of Hope food box giveaways. The giveaways are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month from 4 to 6 p.m. or until the supply runs out. Each box weighs approximately 40 pounds and includes an assortment of fresh and nonperishable foods. Nine households requested and received boxes at the first giveaway, and that number had grown to 40 at the September giveaway. “There are so many things we can’t do now, but this is something we’ve found a way to make work, said WSUCC member Linda Overley. “We’re hoping we will meet the needs of people who are food insecure. In addition to the Hands of Hope giveaways, WSUCC has held food drives for local food banks. An unadvertised drive a few weeks ago resulted in a

pickup truck half full of nonperishable food, Overley shared. Another food drive is planned for Friday, Nov. 6, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine. “We’re trying to fill a truckload, Overley said. “Our joy would be to fill two trucks. Although the collection is being advertised as a Thanksgiving food drive, the list of desired items does not include traditional Thanksgiving meal ingredients. “This will be supporting (recipients) for more than just one day, Overley pointed out. She noted that the food drive will help to stock the shelves of the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNMinistries) food bank, which provides enough food for multiple meals to households in crisis situations or once every three months as needed. “There’s a tremendous amount of poverty (in the Southern End) and no way to get to (Lancaster-based) services, Overley commented. “(SNMinistries executive director) Teresa Dolan does a tremendous job with the ministry and making sure their needs are met. WSUCC has a long history of supporting SNMinistries, Overley said. Donors may drive through the traffic circle in front of the church, where masked and gloved volunteers will be on hand to remove dona-

Laundry detergent and monetary donations that could be used to purchase milk and other fresh items will also be accepted. Additionally, a Christmas food drive is slated for Friday, Dec. 4. Mid Penn Bank announced on Oct. 15 that it has contributed $75,000 to the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC). PBCC is a statewide nonprofit organization designed to extend public awareness of breast cancer and to encourage increased public and private funding for research, legislative advocacy, and high-quality screening, diagnosis and treatment. In previous years, Mid Penn Bank has held its Celebrity Golf Tournament for Charity as the means for raising funds to support breast cancer research and patient support. This year, the event did not take place in its normal form, due to guidelines and recommendations for social gatherings in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the money was raised through celebrity friends and sponsors. Since 2016, Mid Penn Bank has raised a total of $450,000 for breast cancer, contributing to PBCC, the American Cancer Society and the Breast

The Costume Shop at Millersville University (MU) is known for renting outfits and accessories for dramatic productions and private parties. Lately, however, it also has been selling items, with its most recent sale slated for Oct. 24. “ We’re just clearing out some space, said assistant manager Nick Blair, noting that the sales give the shop opportunities to cull items that have not been rented in a long time or may be nearing the ends of their lives. Lest anyone be afraid they missed out on the perfect costume, the items that have been sold are just a drop in the bucket of the shop’s inventory, leaving plenty of options for last-minute Halloween rentals. “ We have upwards of 30,000 costumes, just by counting the hangers in the shop, Blair said. MU entered the world of costume rental in 1982, and The Costume Shop has been managed by Priscilla Kaufhold since 1984. MU students assist in running the venue. The collection of garments and accessories has grown to fill five rooms on the lower level of MU’s Jefferson Hall, 164 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The collection is

organized by theme, with the main room packed full of clothing representing many time periods and a second room dedicated to fantasy and occupations. A broad range of sizes are available, Blair said, claiming that the shop has something to fit everybody. Blair has not noted any particular trend in styles rented for Halloween, but part of that is due to decreased Modeling attire available for rent from The Costume Shop rentals. CBF Awards Contracts For Trees The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has stepped up its efforts to ensure that it will be able to plant millions of trees in the coming years. The efforts also benefit local businesses and streamside buffers in Pennsylvania. CBF, which coordinates the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, is spending approximately $2.6 million for 710,000 trees, shelters, and stakes to supply plantings through 2022. Growers and related businesses in Pennsylvania and Maryland that provide trees, shrubs, and materials are guaranteed revenue through this forward contracting, and the partnership will receive the variety, quantity and quality of trees, shrubs, and materials it needs to continue its drive to plant 10 million trees in Pennsylvania by the end of 2025. Since 2018, cumulative efforts by CBF, the partner-

ship and others across Pennsylvania have planted roughly more than 1.74 million trees. The partnership is made up of 147 national, regional, state, and local partners. CBF issued requests for proposals (RFP) and awarded bids to seven companies for a total of 210,000 trees, stakes, and shelters for 2021. RFPs for trees have been issued for single years since 2018, but contracting two years ahead to 2022 is unique for CBF. Four companies were awarded future contracts for a total of 500,000 trees for 2022. Those companies are Aquatic Resource Restoration Company in York County, Musser Forests in Indiana County, Octoraro Native Plant Nursery in Lancaster County, and American Native Plants in Baltimore County, Md. All four companies were also among the seven that received con-

tracts for 2021. Funds provided through the contracts will help some of the companies expand their operations. CBF noted that the security of its forward contracting made the latest RFPs attractive to a conservative industry still affected by the housing crisis of 2008 when there was little need for nursery stock and services. The economic benefits of forward contracting also extend to contractors that will do the planting work and maintain the planting sites, said CBF’s Brenda Sieglitz, who manages the partnership. Sieglitz added that the new contracts will also increase the diversity of native trees for planting, as CBF has ordered a mix of species. As part of its efforts to plant a variety of trees, CBF responded to input from statewide organizations and is asking for trees that are hard to find. See CBF pg 12

CBF launched the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership in 2018, focused on Pennsylvania’s Clean Water Blueprint goal of planting 95,000 acres of forested buffers by the end of 2025. Amid COVID-19 restrictions, 84,000 of 95,000 trees distributed for spring planting in 2020 went into the ground. The remaining 11,000 trees are being kept in partner greenhouses and will grow into larger stock for future plantings. For fall plantings, about 47,000 trees were scheduled to be delivered in September to pickup points. Due to spring cancellations, the fall Octoraro Native Plant Nursery in Lancaster County 2020 number of trees is more received contracts to provide trees to the Chesapeake than double what was planted Bay Foundation in 2021 and 2022.

in the fall of 2019. Adding 10 million new trees alongside streams, streets, and other priority landscapes in Pennsylvania’s portion of the bay watershed would accelerate the Keystone State as much as two-thirds toward the 95,000-acre target, according to CBF. Trees are among the most cost-effective tools for cleaning and protecting waterways by filtering and absorbing polluted runoff, stabilizing streambanks, and improving soil quality. Placed in parks, municipal properties, and other urban and suburban settings, trees absorb and clean stormwater, reduce flooding, and help restore abandoned mine land.
