s Thanksgiving approaches, many people are getting into the holiday spirit. For some, this includes helping others. Since 1993, Samaritan’s Purse has partnered with local church worldwide to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For the past 28 years, Samaritan Purse has aimed to accomplish this goal by giving more than 188 million children in over 170 countries and territories an Operation Christmas Child (OCC) shoebox. the shoeboxes are filled with gifts of toys and hygiene items. Located at 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC) has served as a drop-off center for OCC shoeboxes since 2008. MOPC mission team leader Dan Henry estimates that the church has collected about 20,000 shoebox donations over the years. “It’s a great way to spread joy and smiles and most importantly spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ all

Julie Baum, supporter relations director of Align Life Ministries, is clear on how the organization, which first opened in 1985 as Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services, has come to be called Align Life Ministries. “The short answer is, ‘It was God’s idea,’” she said. The long answer is a little more complicated. “First, God taught us the importance of having the word Align in our name,” explained Baum, who added, “When you align your heart and mind with Him, life springs forth.” She also noted that

15 weeks of classes may choose from large items such as a crib. She added that classes are tailored to clients’ needs and may include videos, information on infant care, and prayer. The Gospel is proclaimed in words throughout the program. Parenting classes offer material for parents of children from birth through age 12. Clients may be served in person or virtually. “Ephrata is unique in that there is not another center close by,” said Keretzman, who noted as many as 20 clients a week visit the center. “ We see people from the other side of New Holland,” she said. Baum noted that services are also available for those who have terminated a pregnancy. “We have Bible studies and one-on-one conversations,” she noted. During 2020, the ministry became acquainted with more than 500 new area families when the organization’s stockpile of diapers, baby wipes, and formula was needed by young families unable to obtain those items. “We offered a week’s worth of free baby supplies at a time,” explained Baum, who recalled porch pickups and deliveries to families. “What a blessing to reach people spiritually and to meet physical needs.” Information about Align Life Ministries’ services may be found at https://align lifeministries.org.

nearly a decade ago, the organization felt called to partner with other Christ-centered, life-affirming groups and began working with a ministry in Philadelphia, offering information on partnering with churches, engaging with donors, and even helping to obtain an ultrasound bus for one organization. But partnerships were only part of the story. The ministry also offers equipping resources to other organizations. “ We were meeting with high school students and teaching them ways to walk in sexual integrity,” said Baum, referring to a curriculum for teens and young adults called “Sexuality by Design.” The ministry also offers leadership help in the form of president Lisa Hosler’s book called “The Unexhausted Leader.” “(Our reach) extended beyond the Susquehanna Valley, so the name Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services wasn’t going to work much longer,” said Baum. The organization’s pregnancy services centers, located in Lebanon, Lancaster, Ephrata, and Columbia, became Align Pregnancy Services. Becca Keretzman, director of the Ephrata location, explained that each center offers a variety of services, such as pregnancy tests, prenatal and parenting classes, a baby boutique, and other services, including ultrasounds at some locations. Keretzman described the Earn While You Learn program that rewards parentsto-be with Care Cash that can be used in the baby boutique. Those who attend all

Booters Fall in District Quarters, Tie Most Wins

BY MONA STEINHAUER

The Blue Devils took the lead six minutes into the game on a Courtney Andruczk’s shot from 30 yard out. And that stood until halftime. “We just had trouble finishing in front of the net,” said Yoder. “If one of our shots goes in, I feel it would have changed things.” G-A was awarded a penalty kick seven minutes into the second half but the shot went wide and Solanco had new life. Unfortunately, Andruczk made it 2-0 at the 31:06 mark. Just over two minutes later, they made it 3-0. “Those early second half goals took the wind out of our sails a bit,” Yoder said. “Still, despite not being able to possess the ball for long periods of time, I felt we played OK. We played relentless defense. They were just the better team, but we never gave up.” Solanco’s best opportunity to

And while they did not round up the hardware, they did exceed expectations and ended the season on a positive note. Projected to finish in 24th place, the boy’s team, led by Avery Jacobson, settled for 22nd place. The senior saved his best for last, posting a personal best 17:18 for 46th place. man. “Thanks to the impressive amount of work they put in this summer and fall, they blew those expectations away. Christine ran a career best 20:56 for 54th place. She was 12 places and 17 seconds from a state qualification. Next year! “Emma also ran an amazing race,” the coach continued. “She finished just behind Christine in 58th place with a 21:02. “All in all, it was a great day and I couldn’t think of a better way to end the season. I’m extremely proud of these runners. The seniors finished their careers on a high note despite having a new coach and the underclassmen worked hard to get where they did,” Musselman said. “Next year, we set the sights a little bit higher and continue improving. We are heading in the right direction.” FOOTBALL On a wildly wet and windy Friday night, October 30th, Solanco’s football team dropped its final game of the season at Elizabethtown, 32-14, leaving the Mules with a 3-7 record. Solanco committed six turnovers. The Bears converted three. If it wasn’t for a 20-0 second quarter that favored the hosts, the score would have been closer. Solanco punted on the game’s first possession and E-town countered with a 12-play drive and a 31-yard scoring strike for the lead. The Mules quickly answered. Quarterback Bradley Weder (91 passing yards) hit Elijah Cunningham (3 catches) for a 45-yard TD pass and Trent McDowell’s PAT gave the visitors their only lead of the night, 7-6. Four minutes into the second quarter, Etown went in front for good on a 39-yard pass play and just over a minute later, they returned a fumble 43 yards to paydirt. The two-point conversion made it 20-7.

Another passing TD pushed the lead to 26-7 at the break. McDowell recovered his own onside kick to start the second half, but a fumbled pitch ended the opportunity. The hosts countered with their fourth straight TD, a 27-yard run. Solanco capped the scoring with Robert Castagna’s (32 rushing yards) five-yard run with 1:55 left. Brian Coleman finished with 41 rushing yards and Elijah Reimold added 33. Josiah Forren and Colton Stoltzfus recorded eight solo tackles with Aden Herr adding seven. for more photos, visit www.townlively.com

FIELD HOCKEY Solanco’s Kate Underwood and Rebecca Bruno received Section Three all-star recognition with Underwood being named to the second team while Bruno was an honorable mention. “Kate netted her first varsity goal this season on a stroke,” recalled head coach Whitney Hawkins. “She is my center mid. She is strong, aggressive and has great vision of the field. Bruno, a senior, finished with six goals and five assists. “She is a team player,” said Hawkins. “I will miss her passion for the game and her team.”

In collaboration with Lancaster County Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (BHDS), The Arc Lancaster Lebanon connects community givers with children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities or autism who need holiday gifts. The Arc receives wishes for gift cards from individu-

als who will not receive gifts during the holidays due to limited resources or limited family and friend supports. These specific gift card wishes are passed along to each volunteer Angel for purchasing and then returned to The Arc for distribution to the individuals in need. To volunteer as an Angel and learn more about how the Holiday Project works, contact Amy Austin at 717-394-5251 or amy@thearclancleb.org.

Sandra Jones and Paul Zenone’s first date in May of 2019 was a little unusual. “Our first date was a community meal,” recalled Zenone. The second date was even more unusual. “Our second date was a hike where we saw people living in homeless camps and under bridges,” he noted. From that beginning, Jones and Zenone have created Providing Hope, an organization that provides clothing and food to the homeless in the Reading area on a weekly basis, with the help of about 20 volunteers. Zenone and Jones first connected when Jones, who grew up in the Donegal area, saw an ad on Craigslist seeking donations for homeless people in Reading. She reached out to

Zenone, who had placed the ad, and the pair began serving the homeless community together. On Sept. 17, 2020, Providing Hope celebrated its second anniversary as an organization. The pair now works with several Lancaster County food stores, including the Grocery Outlet Bargain Markets. Their first partnership was with Justin and Ellie Maenner, who own the Spring Valley Road store, purchasing items at a deep discount. They have also partnered with Heather and Mike Cherasaro, who own the Lincoln Highway East store, and the couple works with the Manheim Grocery Outlet store. “They reached out to us when we opened the store in April 2020,” recalled Heather, who noted that an

oatmeal manufacturer had printed the wrong expiration date on its product. “It wasn’t expired, but we weren’t going to sell it, so we said, ‘Here you go,’” said Heather. Providing Hope holds a food distribution on Court Street in Reading each Sunday starting at 3:30 p.m. The giveaway includes 15 food items. On Mondays, Providing Hope makes a snack bag run through the city with regular stops. To help homeless Reading residents to know where they can shower or do laundry, Providing Hope has created a flyer in English and Spanish that lists days of the week and locations of services. Now, the couple hopes to provide similar help in Lancaster County, where Jones,

who works with autistic children, is already storing some of the clothing bank items she has collected. “At our house we have bins for male and female winter and summer shirts from small to extralarge,” said Jones. “I store plus sizes and kids’ clothes at my parents’ house in Lancaster.” Zenone, who owns a flooring business, added that Readingarea nonprofits now reach out to Providing Hope when they need clothing for a client. Both Jones and Zenone welcome donations of food and clothing and volunteers. Readers who would like to know more about the organization or would like to indicate interest in helping it expand into Lancaster may search for “Providing Hope” on Facebook.

Orchestra Will Perform “reVision”

The

Wedding P lanner

Dutch Apple To Stage Holiday Musical

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO), together with music director finalist Delta David Gier, will present “reVision.” Performances will take place on Friday, Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 13, at 3 and 8 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster. A free lecture will begin one hour before each performance. The program expresses what can happen when the familiar is reimagined and when one’s focus is resharpened. The audience will be treated to “Sinfonietta for Strings” and “Sinfonía No. 4” by Puerto Rican-born composer Roberto Sierra. Sierra infuses traditional symphonic forms with Latin color, rhythm, and imagination. These works will be paired with Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony. Tickets range in price and can be purchased in advance by calling the LSO box office at 717-291-6440 or by visiting www.lancastersymphony.org.

“Miracle on 34th Street” will be performed at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre from Thursday, Nov. 11, through Thursday, Dec. 23. Based on the film of the same name, the classic holiday story follows 6-year-old Susan Walker, who finds the idea of believing in Santa a childish notion. However, upon meeting a department store Santa whom she believes may be the real Kris Kringle, Susan takes New

York City on a heartwarming journey that shows the difference one girl’s beliefs can make. Cella Berardi, debuting as Susan Walker, will employ her singing, acting and dancing skills for her first role on stage. Berardi’s association with the theater began last summer in Dutch Apple’s Theatre Camp, “Broadway Bound.” Dale Given, playing Kris Kringle, is back at Dutch Apple after his most recent

performance playing various characters in “Grumpy Old Men.” Given also played Santa in last year’s production of “Elf.” There are separate prices for dinner and show tickets for adults, children under age 12 and students ages 13 to 18. Group pricing is available for groups of 16 or more. Prices will increase in the new year. Tickets are now on sale and can be reserved by calling 717-898-1900.
