we are so thankful for our readers and the local businesses and organizations that help to make our communities thrive Volunteers Needed For Bible Adventure Program BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

Do you enjoy spending time with elementary school students? Do you have a relationship with Jesus Christ? Do you have two daytime hours a week available to help youngsters learn about Jesus? If you answered “yes” to these three questions, then Tammy Brown wants to talk with you. Brown is the equipping coordinator for southern Lancaster and York counties for Joy El Ministries’ Bible Adventure program, and she is recruiting volunteers to help with existing offerings and to open new ones. hristmas might look different this year, with fewer inperson group festivities, but the Conklin family is committed to making the holiday special for youngsters, just as they have done for 17 years. Twins Haley Conklin Hirthler and

Emily Conklin Lasko inspired what became the Solanco Toy Drive when they were in elementary school. The girls traditionally held a party at a local skating rink to celebrate their Nov. 9 birthday with all of their classmates. One year, rather than welcoming presents, the girls asked their peers to bring new, unwrapped toys to give as Christmas gifts to

other children. The donations were distributed with the help of the Community Action Program in Quarryville, and the Solanco Toy Drive grew from there. Years ago, friends of the Conklin family joined in with their holiday spirit and began hosting an annual dance to raise money to purchase gifts for the drive. Due to COVID-19,

this year’s dance has been canceled. The Solanco Toy Drive, however, will take place on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon at Nickel Mine Floor Covering, 359 Buck Road, Quarryville. Vouchers for the event may be requested by applying at www.solanco toydrive.com. Jodi Conklin, the

Families can preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-5675341 from Friday, Nov. 27, through Friday, Dec. 11. Registration is required no later than Dec. 11. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 19. The project anticipates distributing over 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County. In addition to this year’s partnership with the

United Way of Lancaster, the LCPN will also continue the partnership with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas. The LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. For information about how to contribute, readers may visit www.lcpn.org.

Before the walk, participants took photos with posters bearing vegetable-themed sayings such as “I am helping to ‘beet’ hunger and ‘squash’ poverty around the block and around the world! Participants walked 5 miles through Muddy Run. Prewrapped snack items were available before and after the walk.

There were 79 participants representing 17 community churches and organizations. This was one of the largest groups of participants in many years. Funds raised for this event were slightly over $13,600, one of the highest amounts raised in recent years. school. For one hour a week during the school year, participants are excused from their classes to attend Bible Adventure. Typically, the programs are held at a nearby church, but some schools allow students to meet in a room on campus. Volunteers gather at the venues a half-hour before students arrive, then take another half-hour afterward to debrief. During the Bible Adventure hour, volunteers lead group singing, teach a Bible lesson, and meet with students in small groups to work on memorizing Bible verses. Scripture memorization is a significant part of Bible Adventure, with a special points-and-rewards program to incentivize participation. Brown noted that the curriculum is created by Joy El staff members and covers the contents of the Bible from beginning to end.

The Department of Labor and Industry launched a redesigned PA CareerLink website with the goal of making it easier for Pennsylvania workers, employers, and workforce development groups to connect to vital job search and career development tools. The redesigned PA CareerLink website focuses on accessibility and features an enhanced candidate sourcing and application process, which will simplify the hiring process for job seekers and employers alike. The website also makes other key resources more easily accessible, including links to the search pages for trainings, apprenticeships, and internships, as well as adult

education resources; the Employment, Advancement and Retention Network (EARN); and benefits through the online tool Compass. Readers are also reminded about the free services that PA CareerLink provides to help workers access job search and training assistance and to help employers find the skilled workers they need to succeed. Virtual PA CareerLink services have been provided continuously for job seekers and employers, including adult education classes, career counseling, and on-the-job training programs. Most PA CareerLink offices have begun taking limited in-person appointments as well.

To schedule an appointment for limited on-site services, readers should contact their local PA CareerLink office. To find a county’s contact information, readers may visit www.pacareerlink.pa.gov. To protect the health and safety of customers and staff and to continue following COVID-19 social distancing and mitigation recommendations, unemployment compensation courtesy telephones will not be available in PA CareerLink offices until further notice. For more information, including COVID-19 employment opportunities in the commonwealth, readers may visit the aforementioned website.

It is open Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students must provide their own electronic devices and bring their own lunches. Thoroughly vetted adults will supervise the classroom. Multiple organizations are working on it,” said Memorial lead pastor Chris Eden. “This was developed with the intention that other churches could do this in their own spaces.” Along with Memorial, the CLC includes Solanco Family Life Network, Solanco Neigh-

LanCarolers Bring Music To Others This year, a new offering for the holidays will be Prima Theatre’s LanCarolers. The group will ring in the season by performing holiday music in an a cappella style at workplaces, neighborhoods, and home front doors. Prima’s LanCarolers will travel in a decorated trolley courtesy of Expressions Limousine of Lancaster. In a partnership with American Music Theatre, Prima’s LanCarolers will be decked out in modern attire, with proceeds benefiting local theater artists affected by the pandemic and the artistic initiatives of Prima Theatre, a nonprofit

organization. Visits from Prima’s LanCarolers can be booked at www.primatheatre.org/carol for Fridays and Saturdays in December. For performances on other dates and times, readers may contact admin@primatheatre.org or 717-327-5124. Prima’s LanCarolers replaces the theater’s previously scheduled production of “Oz.” Ticket holders can exchange their tickets for a LanCarolers visit at no extra cost on Sundays, Dec. 6 to 20, or request a credit for future productions at the aforementioned website.

Past Servant Stage First Look Extravaganzas have attracted up to 1,000 people. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s event will be held virtually, but Servant Stage executive director Jonathan Bauer is thinking positively about the impact of the reveal that will introduce the organization’s 2021 season. “The good thing about holding it online is that we are expecting more than 10,000 people (to view it), said Bauer. “We have been doing virtual concerts all summer, and we have gotten really good response to that, he added, noting that the shows have averaged 10,000 views per concert. The First Look Extravaganza will air live via Facebook and

YouTube by searching for “Servant Stage at those sites and via https://servantstage.org on Friday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. The free show will be presented in coordination with the Extraordinary Give, an online giving event hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF). During the giving event, individuals can visit www.ExtraGive.org, choose from more than 500 local nonprofit organizations, and make a secure online donation. According to Bauer, the reveal will include highlights of performances from the dozens of shows Servant Stage has planned for the next year. “(The presentation) usually ties in with a celebration of the past season as well, so there will be both a look back and a look ahead, shared Bauer. The look ahead will include a variety of genres to appeal to a wide audience. “We have some big epic- type Broadway musicals, and we have some revue-type shows where all the focus is on the entertainment aspect, said Bauer, who noted that a few smaller Broadway productions he called “dramadies will be featured. “They are family friendly and range between dramatic and comedic, he explained, adding that about half the season’s shows will be youth theater productions. The staff of Servant Stage, including artistic director Wally Calderon and Bauer, will take turns hosting the show live from Alliance Church. The presentation will feature both live aspects and prerecorded segments. “During the few weeks leading up (to the show), we will prerecord a few (performances) with smaller groups, explained Bauer. “We will have more than 100 performers on that evening, but for safety reasons not all 100 performers will be there in person. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Bauer sees a mix of virtual performances and live shows. “We are hoping to ease back into live shows, he said, noting that during the first three months of 2021, shows will be virtual. “As we get into the spring, we have planned smaller productions to ease back in and to socially distance the cast, he said. Bauer added that the organization has scheduled shows in a number of large parks next summer in hopes that live outdoor performances may be held at that time.
