Approximately 90 people from Lancaster and York counties have registered to sing in the production, which will take place on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 4 p.m. at the church, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville. Library To Open Art Exhibit The Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, will display art by Robert D. Libby of Philadelphia in the Carlson Room from Saturday, Nov. 23, through January 2020. An artist reception will take place on Nov. 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. Libby has stated that his most recent work explores duality. Multiple images can be seen at once in a delicate balance between realism and abstraction. The latest series focuses on the intimacy of the portrait and the moment where time seems to slow down. Libby said that photography is his sketchbook, but oil painting is his mode of storytelling. Libby received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and a Bachelor of Science in art education in 2006 from Millersville University. He received his Master of Fine Arts in painting from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 2011. All are welcome to attend. agreed John Rintz of Strasburg Township. A member of Mount Eden Lutheran Church, Rintz joined the group as a way of reconnecting with his musical side following a busy career and the recent death of his spouse. “The first two rehearsals were over my head, but now it’s good. Tom is such a great instructor,” Rintz remarked. Tom said he hopes to make “Messiah” performances an annual tradition like they had been at the churches he served in New Jersey. “We’d love for people to come and enjoy it and make it part of their Christmas,” he said. Rintz noted that he would like it to be part of his family’s Christmas tradition as well. “We have a lot of young children in my family. They’re excited to come see this,” he said, adding that it is gratifying to have their support after years spent supporting them. “I’ve been to all their shows.” Strasburg resident Jenny Purvis sings with the West Chester Community Choir and has sung with church choirs, but this is her first time to be part of Handel’s “Messiah.” She is enjoying the experience. “I like to sing, (and) it’s a very friendly group. Everybody sings well,” Purvis commented. “Tom is very organized, very detailed,” she added, holding up a rehearsal sheet with the plans for the evening clearly marked and color coded. “(Tom) is amazing,” agreed Troutman, who has sung with Memorial’s choir since she was 13. “He knows what to ask and how to get sounds from you. I’ve enjoyed (his directing) very much, and Deborah is magnificent on the organ.” Purvis noted that her favorite selections from the portion that will be performed on Dec. 15 are “For Unto Us a Child is Born” and the “Hallelujah” chorus. “It’s one of the most beautiful compositions I’ve heard,” remarked Joshua Benkendorf. At age 16, Joshua is one of the youngest members of the “Messiah” choir. He and a friend come from York. “I love to sing; I’m in five choirs currently,” Joshua explained. “I like the experience (of singing the ‘Messiah’) and how holy it is.” Tom said he expects the performance to run for about 80 minutes. Tickets will be required for admission. As only 300 tickets will be sold, he recommended that people purchase them in advance by calling the ticket line at 717-723-9001 or visiting http://quarryville.church. If not sold out, tickets will be available at the door.

“We call this the Water Street Marriott location and youth hostel, Mike Burkholder, chair of the board of directors of Water Street Mission, 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, joked to open his comments at the Nov. 13 ribbon-cutting ceremony for the mission’s new Providence emergency shelter. The facility was created by renovating 9,000 square feet of warehouse space into a comfortable, attractive place where individuals may receive immediate care, shelter, and the opportunity for a better life. “Several years ago, (we looked at how to) align our core values and what we believe God’s heart is for our guests and our facilities, Burkholder continued, noting that offering dignity, hope, and healing is part of the mission’s values. “(At Providence), guests will have (access to) calmness and peace and achieve restoration and equity in their lives. The importance of treating peo-
ple with dignity and respect was emphasized numerous times throughout the ceremony, as well as during tours of the facility afterward. For Water Street Mission leaders, that starts with clients’ first impressions as they enter the shelter and move throughout the venue. The front desk has the feel of a quality hotel, and the sleeping quarters will include numerous single cots. Gray manufactured plank floors run underfoot, and cream-colored walls surround the space. Vice president of programs Colleen Adams pointed out that the sconce lighting was designed to dim as the lights-out time of 10 p.m. approaches. Smaller lights ring the floor so guests and staff members can move safely throughout the building. Locking cellphone charging stations are located in the sleeping rooms. The new shelter was created with trauma-informed design, with safety for individuals being paramount, Adams said. Each of the shower stalls in the restrooms is private and has a heavy locking door, and clear sight lines within each of the men’s and women’s areas are maintained. After they enter the building, the only time men and women might encounter each other is in the shared laundry room. Adams noted that families stay together elsewhere on campus. The facility also includes respite rooms for those who need downtime before sleeping, indoor storage for personal belongings, fewer bunk beds and more single beds to improve personal space, and a hotbox room where guests can have their belongings heat-treated to reduce the possibility of insects

Although the six organizations are collaborating for the Southern End GIVE Event, Extra Give donations will be made and used individually. New Hope will use contributions for its Hope Chest, which makes it possible for people to receive counseling when it otherwise would be unaffordable. Donations to SECA will support its operations and fund new programs and events. Kerns said he hopes to launch a playground program for the summer. Black Rock will use donations for outdoor-related activities, such as summer camp. “Kids need to get outdoors,” development director Kendall Keeler said. “Come help us get kids into God’s beautiful creation.” Bender noted that the SEF introduced two new scholarships in the past two years, supporting first-generation college attendees as well as students who might not excel academically but show potential. The group has also created a larger teacher grant that would benefit the recipient’s entire building, not just their classroom. Bender directs readers to https://solancoeducationfoundation.org to learn more. The Quarryville Library has seen increased maintenance costs and sustained a funding cut this year, but it continues to be committed providing services and materials to the community, Drennen said. It offers free access to books, computers, and wireless internet. SNMinistries, which operates an emergency food bank, also has plans for its donations. “We’re seeing a lot more needs and changing needs,” Linde added. “We would love to add a full-time caseworker to help clients break the cycle of poverty.” For more information about the Southern End GIVE Event, readers may call Linde at 717-786-4308.

The 2019 Solanco CROP Walk took place at Muddy Run Park in Holtwood on the morning of Oct. 19. The focus of the day was a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first CROP Hunger Walk. Many of the walkers had their picture taken while holding signs reflecting how many years they had participated in the Solanco CROP Walk. The event had a total of 92 participants representing 12 community churches and organizations. Funds raised for this event were slightly over $11,000. This was the largest group of participants in many years, and the amount raised is one of the highest amounts raised in recent years. Church World Service will receive 75% of the funds, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries will receive 25% to support the work of the Solanco Food Bank. Before the walk began, Teresa Dolan from Solanco Neighborhood Ministries shared words of thanks and encouragement. Participants enjoyed a 5-mile walk through Muddy Run, with many participating in a trivia quiz while they walked. Those participating in the trivia quiz collected prizes at the end of the walk. Pictured on front: Bill Welch (back) and grandson Nash Welch (front, left) carry tired walkers Maverick Tshudy (front, center) and Dawson Holzhauer.
Rachel (left), Phil (center) and Sheri Johnson celebrate 15 years of participating in the Solanco CROP Walk.
